* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: The people who kidnap Forrest Blackwell at one point. [[spoiler:Were they aware of his plan and intending to stop him? Alternatively, was the kidnapping staged by Blackwell to keep his publicity up, or possibly to throw Chase and the police off his trail?]] Blackwell himself suggests that they were [[spoiler:environmentalists out to get revenge on him for his attempt to disrupt the Bluebell National Park ecosystem, but he could very well be lying]].
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjqnvTNNOmM The loading screen music, of all things]]''
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMb2vFEKu2E The music that plays during the very final level.]] An orchestra and epic chorus are hardly what would be expected from a Lego game, but are perfectly fitting and awesome all the same. And what is the [[OminousChanting chorus chanting?]] [[TitleDrop "LEGO, LEGO, LEGO // CI- TY, CI- TY"]]
** For a completely different variety of awesome, the music that plays on Hayes' Farm or whenever you're riding a pig is just about perfect, folksy, sweet, and oddly nostalgic all at once. And it's one heck of an earworm to boot.
** The beautiful Italian-sounding strings and piano piece playing in Vinnie Pappalardo's ice cream parlour is pretty great, too, and is a perfect fit for an Italian gangster-movie pastiche.
** Then of course there’s "[[Music/KatrinaAndTheWaves Walking on Sunshine]]" which plays in the opening, setting the mood for the fun you're about to get into. It even plays in the credits, though only in the Wii U version.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: Frank Honey. Whether or not his stupidity and manchild antics are annoying or funny is up to the players.
* BestLevelEver: The final level. [[spoiler:You get to infiltrate Forrest Blackwell's moonbase and then get not one but ''two'' boss fights against Rex Fury (the first time [[CoolVsAwesome in a suit of powered armor while Rex is riding a giant robotic T-rex]], the second while throwing mooks at him in the vacuum of space), and capping it off by skydiving to Earth ''through'' Blackwell's crashing rocket [[SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome as it falls to pieces around you]]]], with the [[SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic best track in the whole game]] playing through this final segment as the cherry on top.
* CompleteMonster: [[spoiler:[[VileVillainSaccharineShow Forrest Blackwell]] is a [[CorruptCorporateExecutive corrupt multi-billionaire]] and [[TheManBehindTheMan the true mastermind behind the events of the game]]. After his plans to build an apartment complex in Bluebell National Park were rejected by City Hall for endangering wildlife, Blackwell plotted to build his "utopia" on the moon instead, all the while spitefully swearing revenge on Lego City. Two years later, Blackwell hires Rex Fury to pull off several robberies to acquire everything he needs for his plans, and kidnap Professor Henrik Kowalski to force him to build a device he needs for his moon base under the threat of murdering his daughter, Natalia. Afterwards, Blackwell plans to take off to the moon via the rocket secretly constructed out of Blackwell Tower, while intending to have Lego City and its inhabitants reduced to ash by the rocket's take-off exhaust out of petty spite. After Rex is defeated by [[PlayerCharacter Chase McCain]], Blackwell betrays Rex and attempts to kill both him and Chase, all the while planning to resume his plans of destroying Lego City while [[ForcedToWatch making Natalia watch]].]]
* DifficultySpike: Certain story missions taking place in the main overworld can be this, since if your vehicle gets destroyed, or your target evades you, you can actually ''fail'' instead of simply respawning on the spot. Some of these missions are also on a time limit, too.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: A lot of people love Vinnie Pappalardo thanks to his being one of the funniest characters in the game and a [[AffablyEvil genuinely nice guy]] with [[EvenEvilHasStandards no tolerance for Rex Fury.]]
* GameBreaker:
** The stud multiplier Red Bricks are easy to find and make the Lego City Hero ratings a matter of getting one purple stud. Thankfully, a lot of red bricks cannot be found until the endgame, or after the story is over.
** One of the last upgrades, [[spoiler:the jetpack]], makes it possible to skip large sections of the main world's free runs.
** The Super Color Gun Red Brick, as it completely frees the player from having to seek out Color Swappers, especially since there are objects that need to be painted without any hint as to what color they're supposed to be.
* GoodBadBugs: A coding oversight for the remastered version resulted in the Red Brick Extras being automatically unlocked after collecting them, rather than needing to buy them like you're intended to. Not only does this render the Police Station's Red Brick store pointless, it eliminates the need to save up studs for the previously-exorbitantly-priced stud multipliers, heavily amplifying their GameBreaker nature.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** "Blue" the fill-in for Red from Shawshank Redemption was asked if he was [[Creator/MorganFreeman "Free, man"]] to which "Blue" denies... [[WesternAnimation/TheLEGOMovie Morgan Freeman as a LEGO Minifigure, eh?]] For some bonus points: Blue's actor would later go on to [[TheOtherDarrin Darrin said character]] in ''VideoGame/TheLEGOMovieVideogame''.
** While undercover at the Fire Station, Chase uses the alias Pete Peterson when asked about his name. 7 years later, LEGO would introduce a character in ''WesternAnimation/HiddenSide'' with the same name.
** The ''Franchise/SuperMarioBros'' references in the UsefulNotes/WiiU and UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch versions of the game have become this thanks to LEGO announcing [[Toys/LEGOSuperMario official]] ''[[Toys/LEGOSuperMario Super Mario Bros.]]'' [[Toys/LEGOSuperMario products]] in 2020.
** Considering that Chase and Chief Dunby's voice actors, Joseph May and Kerry Shale respectively, also played [[WesternAnimation/ThomasAndFriends Thomas and Sir Topham Hatt]], this game can give a rather amusing insight into what it'd be like if the Fat Controller didn't have faith in his engine.
* MoralEventHorizon: [[spoiler:Forest Blackwell deciding to launch his rocket, which would have certainly killed many people had Chase not put up a forcefield around the exhaust fumes.]]
* HoYay: When Chase tells Frank that he’s “getting closer to Rex”, Frank interprets it ''literally'' and responds that that’s “so sweet” before asking Chase if he ''likes'' Rex.
* SugarWiki/MostWonderfulSound:
** In addition to the beautiful sound of collecting studs this game adds the little clicking sound that bricks make when you collect them, not to mention the sound of collecting a super brick.
** There's something enjoyable about the default ringtone of your Police Communicator.
** The jazzy guitar riff that plays when you find a collectible.
* PortingDisaster: The [=PC=] version has been noted to have optimization issues, as well as some {{Game Breaking Bug}}s. Luckily, for the former, it's somewhat mitigated by [[https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=949406574 this fix]].
* SpiritualAdaptation: While the stories are only similar on a superficial level at best (and even saying ''that'' much is more than a bit of a stretch), gameplay-wise this is essentially a LEGO-fied child-friendly version of Creator/RockstarGames' ''VideoGame/LANoire''. Comparisons to another one of Creator/RockstarGames' popular series, ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAuto'' are also common.
* ThatOneSidequest:
** Some of the Time Trials and Vehicle Robber Arrests can get quite frustrating if one is not accustomed to how different vehicles handle. The Muncher Time Trial and Transter Robber Arrest in Fresco especially come to mind for the unlucky.
** The Ice Cream Truck Time Trial is among the more infuriating ones for one specific reason: the ramp jump in Paradise Sands onto the roof jutting out of the tunnel mountain, because jumping both onto and off of that roof has a frequent tendency to either launch you into the water or flip the truck upside down, helpless against the impending self-destruction and forcing a race restart.
** Finding both wheels for Chuck's motorbike. The first one isn't too hard, but the second one involves retrieving it from the nearby port by going fishing for it. There aren't many hints as to where it was either.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: This game is often treated as a SpiritualSuccessor to the ''VideoGame/LEGOIsland'' series. On top of that, it's a "cops & robbers" game. This was a perfect opportunity to include some classic ''LEGO Island'' characters, especially [[BlatantBurglar the Brickster]]... and they somehow missed it!
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: During the final level [[spoiler:the scenery that Chase passes while skydiving to earth]] is nothing short of mindblowing.
