* AngelDevilShipping: Since the comic's release, there's been an increase of [[https://www.wattpad.com/511045060-the-captain%27s-logbook-volume-four-12-22-17 various]] [[https://www.tumblr.com/search/maul%20x%20eldra fanart]] and [[https://archiveofourown.org/works/24594604/chapters/59407894 fanfiction]] of Maul and Eldra together as a romantic couple.
* MagnificentBitch: [[WomanOfWealthAndTaste Xev Xrexus]] is the [[TheQueenpin head of the Xrexus Cartel]]. Having her men abduct a Jedi Padawan named Eldra Kaitis and hoping to turn a profit, Xrexus arranges an auction with multiple decoy events to sell the Padawan to the highest bidder. Deducing Maul will kidnap the Padawan from a simple conversation, Xrexus sets a bomb to send the ship he takes her in crashing to the planet below and arranges a pay-to-enter hunt to make further profit from the ordeal. Though the hunters fail, Xrexus remains composed when Maul kills her, talking solemnly to him and deconstructing his desire for vengeance before ultimately revealing to him that she deduced his true nature as a Sith as her last words.
* {{Squick}}: While on Malachor, Palpatine makes Maul breathe in the ash of the some hundred/thousand-year old [[TakenForGranite corpses]].
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: When the series was first announced, some were disappointed that it would take place before ''Film/ThePhantomMenace'' rather than in the TimeSkip between ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]''[=/=]''Film/RevengeOfTheSith'' and ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsRebels Rebels]]'', as at the time of the announcement, what Maul had been up to during the TimeSkip and how exactly he got stranded on Malachor was unknown. However, current reception to the plot of the series is relatively positive, as it does give insight to Maul's past as a Sith apprentice, helped in that his endgame story in ''Rebels'' was being released side-by-side with the first two issues then.
* UnexpectedCharacter:
** Khaat Qiyn and her apprentice Bairdon Jace. Considering they were peripheral characters in ''Attack of the Clones'', their appearance in ''Darth Maul'' and the fact that they actually first appeared in the theatrical films was surprising to the fans. The two also have very little information in the ''Legends'' continuity as well, so hardly anyone expected them to have a role beyond being part of what is basically a filler crowd.
** No one expected bounty hunters to help Maul in his hunt, nevermind Cad Bane and Aurra Sing, who will also continue to be adversaries of the Jedi Order in ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars The Clone Wars]]''.
