* {{Anvilicious}}: Being fat is not always bad, a message that's constantly told in every book.
* FridgeHorror: In ''Earthly Delights'', Jason tells Corinna that he and some of his junkie friends traded blood for heroin at a vampire club. At least one is a known prostitute- and the people in that club were consuming their blood, including Corinna herself. How many people got AIDS or Hepatitis or something from that blood?
* HarsherInHindsight: In ''Forbidden Fruit'' we learn that Goss had a controlling, emotionally abusive mother who derided her over her weight and forced her on diets. She realizes her mother was wrong and sympathizes with a girl in a similar situation, but she still worries about staying thin.
* NightmareFuel: In ''Trick or Treat'', a lot of people start suffering the effects of what the police believe to be poison or some kind of drug- but they can't find out what. It turns out to be ergot- a lot of people who ate bread from another bakery were suffering the effects of LSD. One man eats produce from the bakery, goes to the top of a building and throws himself off, believing he can fly. One of the residents of Insula witnesses it.
** Lestat from ''Earthly Delights''. He believes he's a vampire and likes drinking blood.
** Goss and Kylie going apeshit in ''Devil's Food''.
* StrawmanHasAPoint: Corinna occasionally monologues in some of the books about how the Mouse Police's presence in the bakery is justified because she refuses to use poisons or traps to catch mice and rats, as there's the possibility of the bread becoming contaminated. However, while the bakery is generally kept very clean, Horatio sits on the front counter and Corinna pats him whenever she makes a sale, so while the presence of the cats may mean that there's no chance of contamination by poisons, it also means that anyone who's allergic to cats (which is, after all, quite a common allergy) may not be able to eat the bread without having an allergic reaction.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: There's at least one awesome group, person or place that appears in one book and hasn't been seen (as in, more than mentioned in a line or two) since. In order:
** ''Earthly Delights'': Blood Lines, the vampire club
** ''Heavenly Pleasures'': The titular shop and the sisters who run it
** ''Devil's Food'': Cafe Vlad Tepesh, the goth club
** ''Trick or Treat'': The only aversion- Uncle Solly's deli turned up again in ''Cooking the Books''
** ''Forbidden Fruit'': The freegans and Rowan
* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The early books just ''scream'' the early 2000's: characters have mobile phones that still have buttons, characters own CD's, cassette tapes and video tapes, Kylie and Goss watch ''Series/TheOC'', Corinna's a big ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'' fan...
* TheWoobie: Emily and Lena in ''Cooking the Books''- the former is abused horribly by the actress she is working for, the latter almost commits suicide because of the workplace bullying she is subjected to.
%%** Pockets, too.
%%** Brigid and Dolores.
%%** Jason.
