1	* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt: The animation drawings are a gorgeous blend of monochromatic pencil sketches digitally colored to resemble watercolor. Certain shots also feature [[AnimationBump some of his most fluid animation]]. The result is one of Bill Plympton's absolute best-looking films.
2	* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Ella and Jake randomly breaking out into "[[Theatre/LaTraviata Libiamo Ne' Lieti Calici]]" in their kitchen, and the DerangedAnimation that follows.
3	* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: Ella and Jake's embrace during their first breakfast as husband and wife, as seen on the poster. And following the "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" sequence, which is implied to take place during, she coos to herself as he foot pops up.
4	* NauseaFuel: The cop who comes to arrest El Merro throws his head back and laughs... only for Merro's chicken to shit directly into his mouth.
5	* TearJerker: This is easily Plympton's saddest film.
6	** Jake breaking down into sobs when he believes Ella is cheating on him, then speeding off in his car through town in a depressed rage, pounding his head against the steering wheel and eventually attempting to [[DrivenToSuicide drive himself off a cliff]].
7	** The scene after, where Jake sadly blows a kiss to Ella from behind the kitchen door, drops the (supposedly) incriminating photo on the table and just leaves.
8	** Jake resisting Ella's advances after coming home from his first time cheating on her, her sadness illustrated by their bed literally cracking in half and him floating away from her.
9	** Ella, having spend who knows how many nights alone, taking one of Jake's shirts and cuddling it in bed... [[WhamShot only to find another woman's phone number in the shirt pocket]].
10	** Ella trying to shoot herself in the head, then running off through town in tears after Jake's failed assassination.
