* CaptainObviousReveal: Really, though, who was actually surprised when [[spoiler:it turned out Francisco was actually Mylene's father instead of Ramon]]? It's even [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] by Lydia, who tells Ramon that he would have figured out the truth a long time ago if he wasn't so self-obsessed.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Thor only appears in a few scenes, but he's become quite popular thanks to his adorable relationship with Dizzee and his role in making Mylene's record a hit.
* FandomRivalry: Some fans have ''tried'' to create this with ''Series/StrangerThings'', which they view as competition due to that being another {{Creator/Netflix}} series which debuted only a month earlier, but achieved massively more mainstream success. However, there's still a fair amount of crossover between the two fandoms.
** It's not any better, especially when ''Stranger Things'' received nominations for the Golden Globe Awards, while ''The Get Down'' received zero nominations.
** Fans were even more pissed off when ''Stranger Things'' was listed on Rolling Stones' 50 Best Albums of 2016, despite not having any original songs.
* FriendlyFandoms: The ''Get Down'' fandom and the ''Series/LukeCage2016'' fandom. It's mostly because both shows have a mostly black and hispanic cast and are set in the same city; in addition, for a short time both shows were overshadowed by ''Series/StrangerThings''. Also, they're both Netflix shows that premiered around the same time.
** Fans of the Marvel, DC, and Star Wars franchises also enjoy ''The Get Down'' due to its casual shoutouts.
** ''Theatre/{{Hamilton}}'' fans enjoy ''The Get Down'' due to a number of Hamilton cast mates (Daveed Diggs, Renee Elise Goldsberry) making cameos on the show.
* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct:
** Fans were floored by Jaden Smith's stellar performance of Dizzee Kipling.
** Justice Smith's acting in episode 1 deserves some recognition. Zeke's poem about his dead parents is the hugest tear jerker in the series.
* HateSink: Giancarlo Esposito made Pastor Cruz every bit as unlikable as a Bible thumper like him would be.
* HilariousInHindsight: In the penultimate episode, [[spoiler: Ramón]] records his last thoughts before committing suicide on a cassette tape, which [[spoiler: his daughter Mylene]] ends up hearing on her walkman, like the PosthumousCharacter of the show Netflix released exactly the week before The Get Down Season 1b, ''Series/ThirteenReasonsWhy'' and its male lead.
** Shao jumping from roof to roof in the first episode turned into this after he voiced Miles Morales in ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManIntoTheSpiderVerse'', where his character does the exact same thing. His mockery of Ra-Ra's suggestion of superpowers also falls into this.
* LGBTFanbase: With the [[HoYay romantic subtext]] that Shao and Zeke display in almost every episode, Shao [[AmbiguouslyGay possibly being in love with Zeke]], and Dizzee being [[WordOfGay confirmed bi]] (with a preference for men, [[SingleTargetSexuality namely Thor]]), it's not a surprise.
** Also, the [[GayBarReveal Gay Bar Reveal]] in Episode 6 is worth mentioning. Not only is it a pivotal moment for Dizzee, but it provides a vivid, beautiful depiction of gender-nonconforming and trans people and the ballroom scene, both things which are often depicted as somehow seedy or worthless.
** Fans speculate Yolanda Kipling to be a lesbian, which may be true.
* SugarWiki/MostWonderfulSound:
** Mylene's voice. In the first episode after Adult!Books' introduction to the show, you're listening to a soulful voice inside a church. Yeah, that's her.
** [[https://youtu.be/3jbi0uKRzIE Boo-Boo’s voice isn’t anything to scoff at either.]]
* {{Narm}}:
** Zeke's legendary "My Heart Got Shot Out!" line.
** When Mylene went up to Zeke to tell him about her day at the studio, we're welcomed with this line:
-->'''Mylene:''' You don't look okay.\
'''Zeke:''' Yeah, well, it's dark.
** "You smoked weed with someone else?" It's so funny that no one in the fandom takes it seriously. People are definitely used to Zeke being extra emotional and hammy almost all the time.
* NauseaFuel:
** [[spoiler:When you realize that Shaolin is being sexually abused by Fat Annie for money.]]
** [[spoiler:Cadillac touching his groin upon seeing Mylene at Les Inferno isn't pleasant to watch either.]]
* OneSceneWonder: Renee Elise Goldsberry as Misty Holloway. She appears briefly in "Gamble Everything", performs an amazing cover of "Back Stabbers" aimed at Asheton, tears Mylene apart verbally to the crowd and vanishes. She's frequently heralded as one of the best parts of the episode.
* RetroactiveRecognition: Anybody else notice that was Creator/BillyPorter behind the mustache and fro of the dearly departed DJ Malibu?
* ShipToShipCombat: Averted with Shao/Zeke and Mylene/Zeke. Fans of the show mostly like both pairings, even pairing all three of them in an OT3.
