* HilariousInHindsight: The Doctor criticizes the Monk for interfering, which is what the Time Lords put him on trial for. The Doctor seems to have affected history in a way similar to the Monk. [[HarsherInHindsight Then there is the Time Lord Victorious]].
* MoralEventHorizon: WordOfGod confirms that the Vikings did, in fact, rape Edith.
* OnceOriginalNowCommon: This was a WhamEpisode at the time because it was the first story pitting the Doctor against another alien force in a historical period -- up until then, historical stories and science fiction stories had been entirely discrete, so TheReveal that the Monk is another time traveller was a huge twist that broke the established rules of the show. Of course, the 'pure historical' (a story taking place on Earth in a historical period with no sci-fi beyond that of the time travel itself and the presence of the Doctor, companions and TARDIS) is a format all but abandoned after the Creator/WilliamHartnell era, so modern viewers checking out his stories often find it more surprising when the Doctor goes into the past and aliens ''don't'' show up.
* SignatureScene: Steven and Vicki discovering the Monk's TARDIS at the end of Episode Three.
* StockFootageFailure: There was originally a very poor quality looking shot of the viking ship approaching. The restoration team used a new scan of the stock footage for the DVD, but found that (by going from a multi-generational 16mm recording of a videotape recording to a 35mm newsreel extract) [[GoneHorriblyRight the restored stock footage looked too high quality]]. In the end, artificial grain and softness was added to make the stock footage look like the rest of the episode.
* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: It is evident that this story was produced in TheSixties: all the Monk's possessions are contemporary with that era, and he refers to the TARDIS as a "modern" police box. Only his gramophone is old-fashioned, and it was intended to be a tape recorder in the script.
