Context YMMV / Becket

Go To

1* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Does Becket defy Henry out of sincere newfound piety, or does he simply want to preserve the autonomy of the Church from the Crown for the sake of his own power and influence? The play and film suggest the former (unless it's all an act), but for the historical figure of Thomas Becket, the second was probably more likely.
2* EnsembleDarkHorse: Creator/RichardBurton as Becket, a rare occasion for the title character to be this. As OneSceneWonder shows, Creator/JohnGielgud as Louis also reached this status. Donald Wolfit as Bishop Folliot, David Weston as Brother John, Pamela Brown as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Geoffrey Bayldon as Brother Philip, Riggs O'Hara as Prince Henry, Robert Rietty as Alexander III and Edward Woodward as Clement are all other examples.
3* OneSceneWonder: Creator/JohnGielgud as King Louis of France, Creator/SianPhillips as Gwendolyn.
4* RetroactiveRecognition: Creator/EdwardWoodward has a minor role as a French courtier.
