[[WMG: Calvin would soon be killed by the common flu]]
* You see, these germs of disease have taken toll of humanity since the beginning of things--taken toll of our prehuman ancestors since life began here. But by virtue of this natural selection of our kind we have developed resisting power; to no germs do we succumb without a struggle, and to many--those that cause putrefaction in dead matter, for instance--our living frames are altogether immune. By the toll of a billion deaths man has bought his birthright of the earth, and it is his against all comers.

[[WMG: Calvin would face no problems from the common flu]]
* Most forms of life--an overwhelming majority, in fact--do not even notice when they are carrying the common flu, because bacteria and viruses that can infect one species are rarely ever able to infect other species that are not closely related to the first. Diseases like rabies, which can infect not only mammals but also some birds, reptiles, and possibly insects (under lab conditions), are unusual and not the norm.

[[WMG: Life is a stealth prequel to "The Blob"]]
Calvin actually shares some striking similarities with the 1988 version of "the Blob." The creature has combat tentacles, and nigh invulnerability to physical damage, paired with a slight weakness to extreme cold. It also has the ability to directly and rapidly absorb biological matter from living hosts in order to increase its own mass, the extreme ability to change its form and shape, and even exhibits some degree of sadism (as evidenced by its choice to needlessly grow a face to menace its prey).

It could easily be argued that Calvin is the classic "Blob." It simply adopts a somewhat more sleek and aerodynamic form, rather than the more gelatinous form for which "the Blob" is best known, in order to more efficiently capitalize on a micro-gravity environment. It could also be argued that it avoids feeding on most of its victims so that it does not over-grow the limited confines of the space station's interior.

Once on Earth, however, and exposed to planetary gravity, Calvin will feed far more freely, and assume its more familiar "blob" aspect. This is evidenced by how Calvin appears to basically splatter itself all over the inside of Jake Gyllenhall's capsule upon re-entry at the end of the film.
