But no seriously, ''[[https://gamejolt.com/games/fridaynightfunkin/705302 FNF: Free Download]]'', also known as ''Friday Night Funkin Free Download'', is a FanGame based on the RhythmGame ''VideoGame/FridayNightFunkin'', initially presented akin to other ''FNF'' overhaul mods with its setup and music, plus a StylisticSuck visual akin to old and crude [[MediaNotes/AdobeFlash Flash animations]].

The plot follows Dude, a young boy who is dating his lady-friend... Lady, with him being spurred on to challenge her father to a karaoke match in the hopes of getting to prove himself worthy of dating Lady. While Dude has no prior experience with singing, he does receive help from the Karaoke machine itself, [=TeachVee=]. And thus his quest of Karaoke begins.

On New Years Eve of 2023, Tyler announced the game was cancelled, simply saying he was disgusted by [=Ninjamuffin99=], the coder for ''Friday Night Funkin[='=]''.

!!FREE TROPES:
* AdaptationalHeroism: Unlike Daddy Dearest, Strad makes no attempt to kill Dude here.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: In the original ''Friday Night Funkin''', Daddy Dearest doesn't approve of Boyfriend and Girlfriend dating and tries repeatedly to kill the former. Here, not only does Strad approve of Dude and Lady's relationship, but he thought they were ''already'' dating.
* AdaptationalSpeciesChange: Girlfriend's family in the original game are demons, while Lady's family here appear to be humans.
* ADogNamedDog: Like with Boyfriend and Girlfriend in ''FNF'', we have Dude and Lady as the protagonists, who are a dude and a lady respectively. Weeknd 3 also introduces Dude's buddy, Buddy.
* AlliterativeName: Each Weeknd in the story mode has two songs whose names start with the same letter:
** Weeknd 1: "Summer", "Stars"
** Weeknd 2: "Girl Next Door", "Gamejack"
** Weeknd 3: "Twinkle", "Tsunami"
* AllLowercaseLetters:
** All character dialogue is done in lowercase, with the exception of [=TeachVee=], who instead speaks in AllCaps.
** The song titles are formatted with no capitalization, which even extends to their official OST uploads on sites like [=YouTube=] or Soundcloud.
* {{Antepiece}}: When hurt notes start appearing in "Gamejack", they first show up on CD Boy's side, who visually and audibly screws up when he hits them, informing the player they should be avoided.
* AntiFrustrationFeature: The arrows can be toggled to appear more neat instead of leaning into the crude visuals, allowing for better visual comprehension.
* CastOfExpies: As with most "overhaul" mods, every character in this game is based on their corresponding FNF character. However, this one is unusual because it's not an EnforcedTrope - usually, overhaul mods are forced to follow the characters' patterns because of certain traits in the original game being hardcoded, but ''Free Download'' was made from the ground up, leaving only the creator's desires to make everyone an Expy.
* ColorCodedSpeech: Every character has their own text box color: Dude is yellow, Lady is green, Strad is purple, etc. This comes in handy [[spoiler:when multiple people begin speaking through CD Boy in Weeknd 3]].
* ContagiousAI: CD Boy connecting to the karaoke machine ends up somehow [[spoiler:migrating [=TeachVee=] into CD Boy's body until Buddy gives CD Boy an antivirus, which sends [=TeachVee=]'s files back into the karaoke machine]].
* CouchGag: Much like the original ''Friday Night Funkin[='=]'', there are over 200 phrases that appear in-between the "in association with GUNK" and "FNF FREE DOWNLOAD" screens once the game is started.
* CoversAlwaysLie: Downplayed: Buddy is used as the character in the cover art for "Tsunami"'s freeplay menu and soundtrack uploads, implying he's the opponent -- while he's ''part'' of the song, he's on Dude's side, and the actual opponent is CD Boy.
* DamnYouMuscleMemory: Ghost Tapping[[note]]The ability to press the keys without "missing" notes that aren't there.[[/note]] is considered a standard feature in the modding community, and most {{Game Mod}}s for ''FNF'' have it on by default. So naturally, playing this game with it's lack of Ghost Tapping[[note]]It can't be enabled. See EasterEgg below for the result if you try to do so.[[/note]] is gonna be tricky to get used to, as any excess button inputs is gonna reduce your health fast.
* DifficultyLevels: Similar to classic rhythm games (but dissimilar to the original ''FNF''), songs are ranked by their normal difficulty and do not have adjustable difficulty settings.
* DuelsDecideEverything: Facing against a threat? Like in ''FNF'', beat them in a singing competition! In this case, though, it's neither the protagonist or the antagonist carrying out the trope, but it's instead enforced by a third party in [=TeachVee=], as shown in by them [[DeusExMachina inexplicably showing up]] to convince Cyan to fight Dude in singing battle instead of resorting to violence.
* DecompositeCharacter: Girlfriend's roles are split between two characters - [=TeachVee=], the tutorial character, and Lady, the player character's girlfriend who sits on the speakers.
* EasterEgg:
** Attempting to enable ghost tapping in the options menu instead leads to the "chimp game", a minigame where the player must click the screen every time a picture of a chimp shows up.
** Pressing pause at any point during a song changes the character sprites to show them being confused/annoyed until the game is unpaused.
** There is a low chance for an extremely loud "oh shit" sound effect to play after you lose a song.
** Pressing the 1 and 2 keys at any time will play a goofy sound effect.
* {{Emoticon}}: Lady mostly communicates her emotions by emoticons such as ":]" and ":0". Sometimes her face with even turn sideways to express it directly.
* {{Expy}}: CD Boy is one to Cassette Girl, being a RidiculouslyHumanRobot with the same theme of recorded music, in his case [=CDs=] instead of Cassettes.
* GlitchEpisode: Weeknd 3 sees Dude and Buddy repairing a malfunctioning CD Boy after he contracts a virus from the karaoke machine [=TeachVee=] inhabits.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Lady is blonde (with a purple streak), and is a kind and caring girl. When Dude is recounting how he met Lady to Buddy, he says she was the only one to not laugh at him for trying to roller skate with his socks, and even asked to skate with him.
* HypocriticalHumor: After Dude says that Cyan joking about ripping off his legs is awful, Lady points out the "joke" he made yesterday about running over a dog. Dude lamely attempts to defend himself while Lady mischievously smiles.
* JokeLevel: "Rainbow" is a bonus song in the freeplay menu. Its opponent is a recolored [[VideoGame/VsDaveAndBambi Bambi]] named "Boubee" who only sings a few notes before the player is abruptly jumpscared by [[VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddys2 Golden Freddy]], after which the game restarts itself. Tellingly, the song was removed in the Weeknd 3 update, and Boubee is absent from the 1st anniversary image.
* JustJokingJustification: After losing to Dude, Cyan attempts to brush off her threats to him by claiming she was just joking. Dude points out that not only is that a stupid thing to joke about, but he couldn't tell if she even ''was'' joking.
* KaraokeBox: Compared to the original ''FNF'' and most mods, which have characters make songs up on the fly, All of the music in Story Mode instead comes from a karaoke machine playing InUniverse songs that the characters sing over.
* MeaningfulBackgroundEvent: During "Stars", a figure can be seen watching Dude and Strad sing through a window. WEEKND 2 would reveal this to be Cyan, who was kept up all night by their singing.
* MythologyGag:
** Dude is on Lady's shoulders during WEEKND 2's "Gamejack", in reference to the opponents of the original game's Week 2, Skid and Pump, being on each others shoulders the entire time.
** The bonus song "Channelsurfing & Nermal" begins and ends its first half with "Fresh"'s beatboxing segments.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Compared to simplistic but still handrawn look of the rest of the cast, Cromp is an 8-bit sprite.
* {{Sampling}}: The game and its music feature several outside samples, from ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'' to ''VideoGame/SpaceKids''. The game's soundtrack is also made up primarily of publicly available video game soundfonts, which can add to its classic aesthetic.
* ShaggyDogStory:
** [[spoiler:Dude's initial goal of having a karaoke session to be in Strad's good graces were revealed to be moot with Strad's comment of "I thought you already were" when he finally asks him about dating his daughter. Needless to say, Dude ain't happy that he wasted his time over nothing.]]
** In Weeknd 2, Dude fights Cyan and CD Boy for their seats on the bus. By the time "Gamejack" finishes, they're at school, meaning Dude and Lady can't even sit in the seats.
* ShoutOut:
** The FictionalVideoGame setting in the Tutorial has the PlayerCharacter styled after [[Platform/GameAndWatch Mr. Game & Watch]]. This continues in "Gamejack", where CD Boy and Lady are briefly depicted as Game & Watch with a hat and Game & Watch with hair, respectively.
** The "Childish Prankster" PaletteSwap gives Dude the colors of [[WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons Bart Simpson]].
** The man on the TV in "Infographic" spouts a line taken from [[WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy Peter Griffin]], before also using his laugh.
** Buddy's cyclops styled monobrow and lack of a mouth is heavily reminiscent of how Tom was drawn in the early days of ''WebAnimation/{{Eddsworld}}''.
* SleepDeprivation: The driving motivation for Cyan for threatening Dude. Because of Dude's late night karaoke session with Strad in the events of the WEEKND 1, she was left unable to sleep because of the music, leaving her exhausted by morning and falling asleep on the bus.
* TheSpeechless: Lady doesn't speak like the rest of the characters, instead communicating through symbols and emoticons.
* StylisticSuck: The overall presentation is reminiscent of old style flash animations: the visual are all simplistic and at low resolution, the non-singing voice-clips are of low-quality, and the judgment arrows by default, with the exception of the Tutorial, are jagged and misaligned.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Dude believes Strad is going to be against him dating his daughter, as that's always what happens in cartoons (and in the original ''Friday Night Funkin'''). [[spoiler:In actuality, Strad is not only cool with it, but was already aware they were dating.]]
