!!For the book series
* DubNameChange: A printed variation. In the original UK edition of the first book, and in the audiobook version read by the author, the titular Indian was named Little Bull. For the American edition, the sequels, and the film version, his name was changed to Little Bear, likely because bears are revered in Iroquois culture whereas bulls were only brought to America by the Spanish. The name of his bride was also changed from Twin Stars to Bright Stars.
* RealitySubtext: Happens a number of times, most memorably and effectively when in book two Omri tries to bring Tommy back to heal Little Bear, only to find he'd been killed in UsefulNotes/WorldWarI, and again in book four when awakening the figures belonging to Jessica Charlotte reveals Sergeant Ellis died at Trafalgar. The last book, dealing with the RealLife fate of the Iroquois versus the American colonists, is even more about this.

!!For the film
* BoxOfficeBomb: [[AcclaimedFlop Despite good reviews]], the film, budgeted at $45 million, only made $35.7 million in box office totals. It didn't help that it was going up against ''Film/Apollo13'', ''Film/NineMonths'', ''WesternAnimation/{{Pocahontas}}'' and ''Film/BatmanForever'' at the time.
* NoExportForYou: The 20th Anniversary Edition was only released in the US as a region-locked Blu-ray. This is likely due to Sony only holding domestic home video distribution rights, whereas international distribution rights (and streaming rights in certain territories) are held by Paramount.
* ShownTheirWork: Omri starts out with a child's typical amount of knowledge of Native Americans. When he offers Little Bear a tipi to sleep in, Little Bear is understandably confused, as Iroquois lived in long houses.
