* AscendedFanon:
** Toggleable ON/OFF switches to make blocks solid or not have been a mainstay in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld'' [[GameMod ROM hacks]] for years. With this game, they officially become part of the series. (ON/OFF switches existed in ''SMW'' but had a different function, while a switch that functions the same way existed in ''Super Mario Bros. Deluxe'' for the Game Boy Color but did not use the ON/OFF sprite.)
** The Heavy Fire Bros, which previously appeared in fan-made games such as ''New Super Mario Bros. Omega'' and ''Super Mario Evolution'', make their official ''Mario'' debut in this game and are created when giving Fire Bros. a Super Mushroom in the ''3D World'' game style.
* BannedInChina: In June of 2020, this game was suddenly taken down from Chinese e-commerce websites for unknown reasons. However, as was [[https://www.hk01.com/%E6%95%B8%E7%A2%BC%E7%94%9F%E6%B4%BB/486088/super-mario-maker-2-%E6%B6%89%E8%BE%B1%E8%8F%AF%E5%85%A8%E4%B8%AD%E5%9C%8B%E4%B8%8B%E6%9E%B6-%E5%8F%88%E5%9B%A0%E8%87%AA%E7%94%B1%E7%8E%A9%E6%B3%95%E6%83%B9%E5%87%BA%E7%A6%8D reported]] across Chinese language media, it was alleged that the ban was due to user-made levels full of mockery and satires of the Chinese government, especially the Chinese leader UsefulNotes/XiJinping. However, this means that Chinese gamers can still own or play the game, but other Chinese gamers who don't have the game are out of luck now. Also, this incident was unknown to non-Chinese people until the [=YouTube=] channel "Censored Gaming" [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2ItyPVtLjI covered it.]]
* DummiedOut: The "Dizzy" sound/visual effect was removed from this game... but for some reason, [[https://twitter.com/Icay__2/status/1272264423629942785 you can activate its music distortion effect]] in the story level "Just a Normal, Everyday Castle".
* MemeAcknowledgment:
** The [[UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch Switch's]] News bulletin for the announcement of ''Super Mario Maker 2'' references the game's addition of [[MundaneObjectAmazement slopes]] after the first game's infamous lack of them:
-->''Create the Super Mario™ courses of your dreams in the brand-new sequel to original Wii U™ game. In this game, players will have access to even more tools, items and features. Just watch your step: those slopes can be steep.''
** This game's internal codename is "Slope".
* MilestoneCelebration: Like how the original celebrated the 30th anniversary of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1'', this game celebrates the same anniversary for ''VideoGame/SuperMarioLand'' [[spoiler:by bringing back the Superball Flower, complete with ''Super Mario Land'' music and turning your player greenish-monochrome]].
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** In the ''Super Mario Maker 2'' Direct, a new, orange palette of the ''Super Mario Bros. 3'' underground was shown, but was changed back to blue before release.
** The [[https://www.mariowiki.com/images/9/94/SMM2-NSMBU-Twister.png Twister]] (the "enemies" that blow you upwards) was originally [[https://www.mariowiki.com/images/e/ee/SMM2-SMW-WindEnemy.png designed]] [[https://www.mariowiki.com/images/f/f7/SMM2_NSMBU_Twister_alternate.png differently]], looking more like Foos. This design was seen in the reveal trailer in the February 2019 Nintendo Direct, but was changed afterwards for unknown reasons. The original design isn't present in the final game's data, so what it looked like in the ''Super Mario Bros.'', ''Super Mario Bros. 3'', and ''Super Mario 3D World'' styles remains a mystery.
