Context Trivia / InvertedFate

Go To

* AccidentallyCorrectWriting: Spamton was a sentient email client created by Gaster. The Spamton Sweepstakes event reveals that he's actually an email A.I. in Deltarune canon as well, having previously interacted with Noelle before being given form by the Dark Fountain.
* {{Blooper}}:
** In null_1 [[spoiler:after Flowey betrayed everyone and permanently separated Chara from Frisk, Frisk attempts to call their friends on their phone, only to receive no response. There is text that says "No response" despite Chara canonically being the one narrating everything, something which [[WordOfGod Dorked admitted was a slight oversight, as well as being unsure what to do for the context]]]].
** In Rift 3, [[spoiler:Chara has an extra 10HP after waking up in the room Asriel made for them, which was said by the creators to be intentional. However, when the battle with the Pawn of Possessiveness starts, they no longer have that extra HP. The creators hand-waved this as it being lost when the Pawn grabbed them]].
** Rift 6 has [[spoiler:Frisk following up Chara's knife attack on the miniboss with a knife attack of their own, despite not having a knife weapon equipped]].
* CrossDressingVoices: Flowey is voiced by a woman in the official dub.
* DescendedCreator: Dohj is voiced by Dorked; the creator of the AU.
* DoingItForTheArt: Dorked spends much of her free time working on ''Inverted Fate'' in some capacity. She plans the story, writes the scripts and produces the majority of the artwork, assets and music for the project.
* IJustWriteTheThing: Dorked has stated that she didn't ship [[spoiler:Frisk and Chara]] or [[spoiler:Papyrus and Mettaton]] when she first started writing ''Inverted Fate'', but ended up doing so (at least in the context of the AU, not in canon) as she developed the relationships and dynamics of each pairing. It is currently unknown if these ships will eventually happen in the comic, but there has been a lot of ShipTease for them. WordOfGod states that [[spoiler:by the time of the events a potential sequel series based on Deltarune (titled "A Rifted Event") they will have already started dating]].
* TheOtherDarrin: The first few parts of the comic dub have a different voice actor for Chara who quit not long after. The prologue, which was made after the first few parts, features Chara's current voice actor who was cast after the first one left.
%%** Frisk's original voice actor also stepped down due to health issues.
%% ** Asriel's voice actor (who also voices Chara) decided they no longer wanted to voice male characters after transitioning.
* RealitySubtext: Rift Part 2 has [[spoiler:the church's Floweys quote one of Chara's lines from ''Undertale'''s genocide ending about erasing the world. IF's Chara, specifically written to defy fandom perceptions largely influenced by said ending, actively refuses such a notion.]]
* ReleaseDateChange: Despite the series technically still being on a hiatus, on September 11, 2023, Dorked announced that Rift 6 will be released early in celebration of Undertale's 8th anniversary.
* SeriesHiatus:
** The comic went on hiatus from March until September 2018 to work on the Trial video for Part 36, which at one point was going to become a playable game.
** An even longer one happened from December 2018 to October 2020 because Part 47 (a video of the fight against [[spoiler:the Determinator]]) was being worked on, not helped by behind-the-scenes technical issues on the animator's end. To compensate for this, more secret pages on the website were made in the meantime, as were some playable versions of fights that had already happened in the comic.
** Another one started near the end of December 2020 and lasted until April 2021 for the Mettaton Date.
** Another had started for the True Lab arc from May to October 2021.
** After the True Lab, there was a hiatus from November 2021 until May 2022.
** For the Null arc there was another one from June 2022 to September 2022.
** Another hiatus happened from December 2022 until March 2023 to work on the first part of the Rift arc.
** After Rift_5, another hiatus began on April 31st 2023 in order to give the animators time to create animations for the next few episodes due to running out of completed animation. While Rift_6 wasn't intended to be released early, an exception was made due to Dorked wanting to celebrate Undertale's 8th anniversary and so it was released on September 16th 2023. As such the hiatus started again on 17th September 2023 so that the rest of the episodes could be completed. A trailer for the final arc was released on March 8th 2024, which recaps most of RIFT up until Rift_6 while hinting at a few things that might appear in future chapters.
* [[HeAlsoDid She Also Did]]: Dorked, the creator of ''Inverted Fate'' also writes ''[[Fanfic/KingdomHeartsTheAntipode Antipode]]''; a ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' fanfiction.
* ShrugOfGod: Dorked refuses to say [[spoiler:if Asriel absorbed anymore human [=SOULs=] when he reached the surface]] in response to a Tumblr ask. [[spoiler: "null_7" reveals that he did, in fact, absorb the human [=SOULS=] from everyone in the city near Mt. Ebott]].
* SimilarlyNamedWorks: Both ''Inverted Fate'' and ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverseFuture'' have episodes with the title "Everything Is (Not) Fine." Although the ''Inverted Fate'' episode had been released after the ''Steven Universe Future'' episode, the script and title were written a couple years before the ''SUF'' episode was aired.
* ThrowItIn: In the True Lab, [[spoiler:there are four Memoryheads instead of three. This is because the creator forgot that there were only three in ''Undertale'' when designing them, but came up with the explanation of the fourth one having been created from Asriel making such a big change to the timeline]].
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Part 36 (The Trial) was intended as a video, but then came the idea to make it a playable game that would be recorded and released as a video for anyone who couldn't or didn't want to play. However, a TroubledProduction lead to the original decision to make it a video to shorten the hiatus, and a playable version will eventually be made and released later.
** The Mad Dummy fight in the Core was originally going to have Frisk and Chara make them so mad that they would become corporeal with their body as a reference to the genocide run, with Chara (who Mad Dummy can hear) saying more and more funny things every time the "Check" option was used. However, during the hiatus that happened while Part 36 was being made, the UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch release of ''Undertale'' and the bonus fight with Mad Mew Mew resulted in [[spoiler:her being made into a second phase of the fight, and ended with her not becoming corporeal and instead finding a better way to do so other than being angry]]. This turned out to be a good change, because not only did it give the character more depth, but also [[spoiler:provided a way for Frisk, Flowey, and Undyne to see what Chara looks like]].
*** Additionally, Mad Dummy/Mew Mew wasn't going to get as much focus after the CORE as she ended up with. For example she wasn't going to [[spoiler:go into the True Lab to look for Undyne]].
** There was an Undyne date/hangout planned at one point, but it was scrapped because it just wouldn't work with how things before it played out, since [[spoiler:Undyne is still unhappy after being pressured into giving up on her promise, and Frisk isn't likely to forgive her for the trauma she caused them]]. Instead, the date/hangout with Mettaton in Part 53 effectively serves as ''Inverted Fate's'' counterpart of the Alphys date/hangout from ''Undertale''.
** Earlier in the AU's existence, there were plans to explore the Genocide Route as a noncanon story. The idea was eventually scrapped because the setup for such an event would be [[https://invertedfate.tumblr.com/post/645936316979265536/since-papyrus-seems-to-restrict-your-ability-to too contrived to make sense]]; Flowey needs all the characters alive for his plan, Frisk is unlikely to seek out violence as a solution [[spoiler:due to past trauma]], and Chara remembers Frisk's positive runs from the original timeline and would be less willing to accept killing monsters. An overview of what was planned can be found [[https://invertedfate.tumblr.com/post/645940931642736640/if-youre-not-planning-on-making-a-genocide here]].
** Originally, Lilac wasn't going to be featured as much as she is now. An early idea had [[spoiler:Frisk and Chara encountering her already-soulless body while climbing down the mountain]], not even getting to talk to her until the epilogue. This was soon changed to them getting to meet and talk to her in the Underground, but Spamton wasn't involved as Chapter 2 of ''Deltarune'' hadn't come out yet, and she would have either stayed behind or accompanied Frisk and Chara to the surface only to [[spoiler:get her soul taken and not restored until the epilogue]]. This was changed because the author thought it wouldn't be received well after all the build-up to her arrival, and instead opted for [[spoiler:Asriel taking but ''not'' absorbing her soul, as well as being able to put it back at any time]], giving her more of a chance to have a role in the final arc.
** [[https://invertedfate.tumblr.com/post/739728299221254144/aside-from-the-geno-route-which-simply-wouldnt There were several things]] that were left on the cutting room floor with the most notable being:
** Mettatown which was intended to be an explorable area between Hotland and the CORE but was cut due to being deemed as filler.
** The RIFT was originally going to have [[AllTheWorldsAreAStage various aspects from the previous dungeons]] with Lost Soul versions of various enemies. It was changed because the CORE and Null arcs had already made that idea redundant, hence why The RIFT was retooled into being an exploration of Asriel's psyche in the form of various sub-areas and their respective [[EmbodimentOfVice Figments]].
** A sidequest involving Temmie Village and a ChainOfDeals that would've ended in Frisk obtaining the "Ultemate Armour". It was cut due to pacing issues and because Dorked felt that there wasn't much they could do with Temmie Village hence why it never shows up during the main story.
* WordOfGod: The official Tumblr blog reveals several in-universe details not touched upon in the story.
** [[https://invertedfate.tumblr.com/post/665174240405962752/i-think-that-after-all-of-this-is-over-undyne The Barrier was specifically designed by the humans to require seven human SOULs to break.]]
** [[spoiler:Flowey was actually the one who made the memoryhead-possessed TV in the True Lab blow up, and not the memoryheads themselves; he realised they could show Frisk his betrayal and their fight with him from the previous timeline and didn't want them to find out about it]].
** [[spoiler:Chara's SOUL being separated from Frisk's and used to bring them back to life was planned even before the Nintendo Switch port of ''Undertale'' with the Mad Mew Mew fight came out. Had that specific SOUL mode not been introduced and subsequently worked into Inverted Fate's story, there still would have been attempts to separate the amalgamates which would still give Flowey the idea to use the power of the [=SOULs=], it just wouldn't have involved Mad Mew Mew.]]
** Everything from "Null: Part 1" onward is intended to be fully animated if possible.
** [[spoiler:The reason Chara has a knife in "Null: Part 1" is because Flowey stole it from the New Home before altering the timeline and gave it to them before reviving them. He gave them the Heart Locket too]].
** Despite the timeline being altered, Frisk and Chara's backstories are exactly the same as in the old timeline. In fact, the timeline played out exactly the same as the old one until Toriel decided to stay with Asgore longer in an attempt to reason with him.
** Chara fell into the Underground in 2010 and Frisk fell in 2113 (exactly 100 years after Chara died, which was in 2013).
** Frisk picked their own name because they hated the idea that their name was something put on a birth certificate by people who didn't want them.
** If not already the case, Dorked confirms that [[spoiler:Frisk at least will have a mutual crush on Chara]].
