* DVDCommentary: Kayin's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l-kBGr-tB8&feature=PlayList&p=5E7F3C14667470CF&index=0&playnext=1 own Let's Play]] functions sort of as this.
* FollowTheLeader:
** The game is actually based off a Japanese flash game called ''Jinsei Owata no Daibouken'', also known as ''The Life-Ending Adventure''. [[WordOfGod As Kayin himself says]] [[http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtg/faq.php on the faq]], "I played a 2chan flash game that was stupid hard and thought, '[[LetsSeeYouDoBetter Hm, I can do better.]]'" Amazingly, ''Owata'' was unfinished when Kayin played it. When the game was actually completed (long after the release of IWBTG), its final section [[spoiler: [[RecursiveAdaptation is literally taken from I Wanna Be The Guy itself]], ''[[{{Crossover}} with the Kid as the]] FinalBoss!'']]
** And of course, there are many fangames, all of course following the leader.
** When I Wanna be the Love Trap was made, it has a certain boss. The game showed a picture of Hatsune Miku, and played The Disappearence of Hatsune Miku while forcing you to dodge Delicious Fruit of all colors, as well as negi. Many people then started putting similar segments in their fangames, using other Japanese Vocaloid songs and forcing you to dodge for the entire song. Many fangames were made with nothing but these "avoidance bosses".
* RevivalByCommercialization: ''VideoGame/GuiltyGear Isuka''[='=]s "Might Is Right But Tight", made popular through its use as the GameOver theme.
* TechnologyMarchesOn: The [[spoiler:fake error message]] in the Castle of the Guy is in the style of [[spoiler:the Windows XP version of the "program error" dialogue box]]. Since the game's release, [[spoiler:several new upgrades to Windows have been released, Windows XP stopped coming with OEM computers in 2010, and XP support was dropped in 2014, so anyone using a computer made since the 2010s will most likely be using a later Windows version and thus won't be fooled.]]
* ThrowItIn: WordOfGod says the Kraidgief bug was kept in "since it works just like kraid from ''VideoGame/SuperMetroid''".
