* ContestWinnerCameo: A major character in the endgame, [[spoiler:[=re3koning_inc=]]], was in part designed by one of the game's Kickstarter backers.
* TheDanza:
** Music/HotDad's character, the Chowder Man, has the real name Erick Helman, which is extremely close to Hot Dad's own real name, Erik Helwig.
** Basidia's headband identifies him as Ray Dolan, and his tracks are composed and sung IRL by Jay Tholen.
** Casper Sundberg, the frontman of in-universe band Klyfta, has the same initials as Chris Schlarb, who composed his music in the real world. This is subtly lampshaded by Klyfta's album credits; Sundberg is listed as the "performer" while Schlarb is listed as the "producer", but the credit given for both is "CS".
* {{Defictionalization}}:
** The Merchantsoft and Coolfest '99 shirts seen in the game were once sold as real merchandise.
** Klyfta, the cosmic jazz-rock band featured in-game, received a real album release, ''[[https://schlarb.bandcamp.com/album/cosmic-pilgrimage-the-klyfta-tapes-1972-1975 Cosmic Pilgrimage: The Klyfta Tapes (1972-1975)]]''. The album's liner notes--written by Bill Aldrin, who hosts a music review site on Hypnospace--elaborate on the band's situation since the events of the game, and why the album didn't come out in "our" world until now.
* DummiedOut:
** ''Hypnospace Outlaw''[='s=] directory contains a surprising amount of pages that are accessible neither through tags nor through links anywhere on Hypnospace, so they can only be accessed through the game's files [[spoiler:or the unlockable "Super Search". This was crucial in the earliest release versions of the game, as not being able to access the dummied-out pages without cheating meant proper HundredPercentCompletion was impossible. Later updates made it so these pages aren't counted for the 100% tally.]]
** The Festering Orifice page was an early version of Tim's True Tranquility puzzle, but kept in for the launch of the game. This confused players that found it through searching common tags, as none of the clues on the page were solvable. The developers removed it completely after an update.
** The game files contain alternate readings for the news report describing [[spoiler:the Mindcrash, for each number of possible victims: six, five, four, or three. However, since it's only possible to save two victims, the "three" file goes unused.]]
* {{Feelies}}: The physical UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch edition of the game comes with a 19-minute mini CD called ''The Sounds of Hypnospace Audio Tour'', a soundtrack sampler which is presented as an in-universe promo disc (akin to AOL's free trial discs) and contains exclusive content not found on the game's soundtrack.
* NoDubForYou: The game is currently only available in English, due to the dense amount of text and audio, and its puzzles relying on English wordplay. Because of its modular nature, one could hypothetically {{fan translat|ion}}e everything, but nothing has come to light yet.
* ReferencedBy: ''VideoGame/PlayerunknownsBattlegrounds'' had a cosmetic skin called "Hypnospace Diva" in July of 2021, which strongly resembles the aesthetic of ''Hypnospace Outlaw''. It was intended as a ShoutOut and {{Woolseyism}} from the localization team, as the original name in Mandarin was "Golden Diva". However, Jay Tholen expressed that he didn't want his game's image attached to a {{loot box|es}} system, causing the company to change the name.
* SerendipityWritesThePlot: The in-game tutorial has certain points re-recorded with a poorly-done voiceover, which came about due to real changes in the game's UI made after the professional voiceover had already been recorded. Rather than try to patch the outdated dialogue, they decided to make the replacement [[StylisticSuck even more jarring]] because it was funnier.
* SimilarlyNamedWorks: Jay Tholen was unaware until after the game's release that there's a real-life website called "FLIST". The "F" in the ''game's'' FLIST stands for "file". The "F" in the ''real'' FLIST stands for... "[[TheInternetIsForPorn fetish]]". Numerous fans pointed this out to him, to his embarrassment. The in-game version usually goes by the shortened name FLST, however.
* ThrowItIn: In one of the pages that you can find in Coolpunk Paradise during Chapter 2, someone insults Chowder Man by calling him 'Choder Man'. According to Jay Tholen, this was a legitimate typo he made but it worked way too well in context to take out.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** The Kickstarter trailer's "Warp to the Hypnospace Highway" feature refers to a car minigame as a prominent part of the game. Originally, the car minigame was the main focus, with the web pages being a secondary feature (they'd show up as you passed by other citizens). As development went on, the developers came to prefer designing the web pages, which led to the fake internet becoming the game's primary focus. The car minigame is still in there, though, and plays a small plot role as Dylan Merchant's personal passion project.
** There were other features planned for the game that had to be cut for scheduling time, such as an anti-drug section, more with Counselor Ronnie, and more involving the Fungus scene. The ''Hypnospace Plus'' update is mostly focused around adding these cut features back in.
** In the early betas, a Gamerz Only zone was included. In the release version of the game, it's one of five former zones that were abruptly merged into one "geeky" zone called Starport Castle Dreamstation.
** The Kickstarter page heavily implies that the game's plot was originally planned to involve a [[AIIsACrapshoot rogue AI]].
** Originally, "detained" users would have been temporarily sent to a zone called "HSPD Outlaw Detainment". In the final game, detained users remain in the same zone, only restricted to read-only status.
** A [[https://imgur.com/gallery/uLuq9F0 concept art gallery]] by artist Bynine shows several cut concepts for ''[=SquisherZ=]'', including some unused designs and names. Bleel was originally named Slipeely, Ickygoo was originally Ikkagoo, Leaka was Slurby, Pitrool was Gaudrey, Sliraffe was Mergeraf, and Yuckey was Tamagooey. Some of these were renamed to avoid [[WritingAroundTrademarks directly referencing real-world properties]].
** The Gumshoe Gooper case initially would've involved taking down Abby's Gumshoe Gooper {{fanfiction}} she wrote for her child. This was eventually changed to her students' Gumshoe Gooper fanart, likely to make identifying the copyright violation more obvious. The change was made fairly late in development: her page still has the title "Gumshoe Gooper Short Story" and description "This is one of my Gumshoe Gooper short stories I used to tell to my daughter."
** Many scrapped pages from earlier in development can be accessed [[spoiler:in the special zone unlocked after achieving HundredPercentCompletion]], including Abby's Gumshoe Gooper story.
** HYPII was originally going to pester the player to ContinueYourMissionDammit if you got too distracted using other programs. A remnant of this can be seen in the "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usB0TZZX438 Hypnospace is Cool]]" trailer. In the final game, he only comments if you don't do anything for a while.
* WorkingTitle: The game was called ''Hypnospace Enforcer'' when the car minigame was its central focus.
