Context Trivia / FateGrandOrder

Go To

* ActingForTwo: Many voice actors in the game voice more than one character, even discounting versions of the same character (such as Altria). The [[https://fategrandorder.fandom.com/wiki/Voice_Actor_List FGO wikia]] compiled a list of voice actors and their corresponding roles.
** Creator/MamikoNoto voices both versions of Altera, including Altera's Santa version. She also voices something else when Santa Altera fights... she voices the ''flying sheep''.
** Another one for Creator/InoriMinase as Sima Yi where she voiced Reines, the real Sima Yi and Trimmau.
** Creator/AyakoKawasumi has to voice several versions of Altria talking to each other in a drama CD. It's lampshaded when one of them mentions their throat's a little sore from all this talking.
** Creator/YumiriHanamori voices Nemo and his various derivative crew members who all interact with each other in battle dialogue.
* ActingInTheDark: Because the game is primarily told through text with no voices and voice acting is mostly just for gameplay or My Room fluff, actors often have very little inkling of what their character's actually going to be like in the story or when they'll even be revealed. Case in point, Creator/AoiYuuki revealed on the official radio program that she did recording for most of Ganesha's lines along with Okita's lines in ''2015'', long before the Lostbelts were implemented into the game. In addition, she knew Okita had gotten a swimsuit version but had no idea ''when'' or ''how'' the role would actually be used by the writers. That complaining she did on stage after the reveal of swimsuit Musashi? Completely genuine confusion that her character seemingly had failed to materialize for the new summer event.
* AllStarCast: This game unites several high-profile talents. Just from the voice cast alone, there are several prolific actors, both veterans and newcomers to a Type-Moon work, then there's the legion of artists who have been making artwork for the game led by Takashi Takeuchi, Type-Moon's main artist, and all of the Type-Moon writers, all accomplished in their own right, are working on this game.
* AscendedFanon:
** The design for Gugalanna, the Sumerian Bull of Heaven, that PFALZ made for an unofficial doujin over a decade ago made its way into official canon for this game as its head is printed on Rider Ishtar's jacket sleeve and the treasures she hands out in an event correspond to various parts of its body. [[spoiler:And then at the end of the event, the design is made full-bore canon as it begins to appear in all its awesome glory, and is only stopped by a combination of your Servants and a piledriver-of-the-millenium from Quetzalcoatl.]]
** Murabito Moto, Christopher Columbus' artist, had drawn different variants of him, one of them being "Christopher Columbus Lily", a DeliberatelyCuteChild version of him. "Chaldea Summer Adventure!" finally canonizes the young Columbus as he appears as one of the event's antagonists.
** Okada Izo's second Spiritron dress is directly lifted from fanart Izou's official artist, lack, drew for him from 2018.
* BannedInChina: Some Malaysians suspect the last minute cancellation of the game’s launch in Malaysia is reportedly due to some “provocative” imagery (though they could just go the China route and censor it) and the use of the word “servants” brings back some unpleasant imagery of the way Malays were treated during Japanese rule of the country during World War II.
* BadExportForYou: The Chinese version has the artwork of Chinese-based servants removed as of 2021. It's suspected by critics that it's due to the Chinese government crackdown on gamers playing video games.
* {{Blooper}}: The Craft Essence reward for beating Traum, 'Keep a Prayer Burning in Your Heart' displays a completly different design for Johanna than what was shown in the chapter. It was later confirmed this used a different ascension of her then the one that showed up in story.
* CashCowFranchise: ''Grand Order'' catapulted the wider ''Fate'' franchise into the stratosphere in this regard; during the first 133 days of competition between it and ''Pokemon GO'', [[https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-12-04/psst-sony-has-a-hit-that-s-as-big-as-pokemon-go-in-japan it out-grossed PGO in Japan for 104 of those days]], and was one of the very best sellers in Japan's app market throughout 2016, 2017 & 2018. Investor reports for Sony released throughout 2017 and 2018 consistently cite the game as one of the primary drivers of profit for Sony Music; most independent estimates have the game making in the neighborhood of tens of millions of USD every ''month'' in those years. Meanwhile the US server manages to earn US$1 million or more per month by the same estimates, and the Thanksgiving 2017 promotional gacha saw the game get a whisper away from the (hyper-competitive) top ten grossing list for the US app stores, and the release of [[BreakoutCharacter Jeanne Alter]] and the first Summer event saw the game ''reach'' those lofty heights! It finally took the 2020/2021 COVID outbreak to slow the game's massive profits down, after half a decade of relentless dominance.
** To give a better idea as to the power of the franchise, in January 2023, when Nitocris Alter released, the app went from rank 146 to 1 on the App Store rankings.
* TheCastShowoff: Kawasumi sings in-character as Mysterious Idol X Alter for the song "My Galaxy" as part of the "Grail Live" event.
* ChristmasRushed:
** The final stretch of the first storyline was on an ''insanely'' tight deadline as [=DelightWorks=] and Type-Moon had to rush to fulfill the in-story deadline of the end of 2016 with the Christmas events pushed ahead to early ''November'' without even time to breathe after the end of Halloween 2016, and Babylonia and Solomon were released within a week of each other with multiple gachas rotating in and out as they quickly released several new Servants for new story content. It didn't help that they were throwing in stuff at the last minute like when Nasu requested new music remixes for each Demon Pillar fight in Solomon, '''''days''''' before its release. It mostly worked out (as players merely took ''two days'' to defeat all the Demon Pillars in Solomon and get to the ending when they were expecting it to take a week or so to do so) but it taught the developers to not do that again as ''Epic of Remnant'' wrapped up a few weeks before 2018, giving them ample time to prepare for transitioning into ''Cosmos in the Lostbelt''.
** Tunguska Sanctuary shows signs of being rushed out to be released before the end of the year, being a noticeably smaller and less ambitious event than the similar Ooku and Hell Realm Mandala with the writing suffering from some rough patches more in line with the game's earlier stories. The reason for this is probably a combination of the event setting up the climax of the ''Cosmos in the Lostbelt'' with [[spoiler:the Foreign God destroying the Wandering Sea]] which specially took place on New Year's Eve, and that the planned New Year servant was a full on WalkingSpoiler for the event. It's likely none of this was assisted by being developed during the COVID epidemic (with all its related production issues) and with Aniplex's acquisition of the [=DelightWorks=] game unit that would become Lasengle occurring in the middle of development.
* ColbertBump:
** FGO helps Japanese players learn about the previously unknown histories of their beloved heroes, boosting sales of some historical books. Case in point: after Okada Izou appeared in the game, [[http://news.livedoor.com/article/detail/14981370/ his biography completely sold out and the publisher reprinted it twice in a month]]. Some publishers (like [[http://www.tsogen.co.jp/news/2018/07/18072015.html this]]) also caught up on the trend and specify they appeared in FGO while selling their books.
** Japanese bookstores are now [[https://i.redd.it/98tmcwdnw7821.jpg using]] their Fate counterparts as tie-in merchandise to help sell their old literature books.
** The game itself is this to the entire ''Fate'' franchise. While it was by no means ''unpopular'' in the first place, the debut of '' Fate/Grand Order'' launched the franchise to new heights, making it one of the most popular and expansive anime-based franchises out there. Even WordOfGod admits that most players likely didn’t know of or play ''Fate/stay night'' before this game.
** ''VisualNovel/RagingLoop'' saw a surge in popularity when it was announced that its writer would be a guest writer for "Imaginary Scramble", causing ''FGO'' players to go look up the game to see his writing and what was so special about it that it got him hired for ''FGO''.
** Constantine XI's inclusion in the game brought interest into the person who was responsible for him dying, [[UsefulNotes/TheFallOfConstantinople Mehmed II]], who was one of the fan-submitted designs for ''Fate/school life'' as well as one of the only one from those designs to appear in the animated special ''Fate/Grand Order x Himuro's World: Seven Most Powerful Great Figures Chapter''. His popularity has increased so much, that the amount of illustrations under his tag on Website/{{Pixiv}} surpass those of Lê Lợi, who is a [[OverusedCopycatCharacter Saberface]]. The fact that his design is the more mature of the bunch, as well as his more romantic appearance of wearing glasses, holding a rose and having a cat, and being easier on the eyes compared to his more generic design from ''Fate/Apocrypha'', has made him THE most popular character from ''Fate/school life'', all because of Constantine XI's implementation.
* ContentLeak:
** Datamining the game when it launched dug up a list of every single Servant planned for implementation at that time, which resulted in the fanbase being able to predict several Servants ahead of their debut thanks to this list.
** Creator/SakuraTange had briefly posted in 2015 a list of her roles she voiced for ''Grand Order'', which included a character named Mother Harlot before she deleted it and reposted the list without that character. Six years later, Nero's [[spoiler:iteration as Beast VI]] was revealed in ''Arcade'', confirming that the Mother Harlot was indeed a role Tange plays.
** Shortly before Olympus got leaked, data for the newly summonable servants and portraits for noticeable [=NPCs=] got leaked out. This most noticeably included artwork for [[spoiler:U-Olga Marie]] which wouldn't be used until Lostbelt 7.
** Shortly before the release of the third part of Lostbelt #6, [[spoiler:Oberon]]'s third ascension as well as his true class got entirely leaked onto the internet.
** In general, every time a major story update happens something gets datamined and leaked before it was supposed to be revealed. [[WhyFandomCantHaveNiceThings This eventually led to the developers to crack down on anyone who would post those things.]]
* {{Corpsing}}: Eric's "mad" ramblings for blood and mayhem are underscored by Kunihiko trying very hard not to laugh at what he's trying to say.
* CreatorBacklash:
** After finishing it, Hikaru Sakurai admitted that she wasn't proud of Septem, citing the weak pacing and poor characterization as factors. Most fans agree.
** Reportedly, this is the motive for why Jekyll received so much prominence in promotional material and had a short story written about him and Sherlock Holmes. Sakurai deeply regretted killing him so soon in the ''Fate/Prototype'' light novels, feeling that she had wasted the character.
** Takashi Takeuchi has stated that staff members feel frustrated by how Romulus was treated in the game's second chapter and if they could redo it, he would be a 4* story-locked Servant with a much bigger role. This came to fruition for the fifth Lostbelt with Romulus-Quirinus as an 5* Lancer with a much more impressive showing [[spoiler: as the ''Grand'' Lancer.]]
* CreatorsFavorite:
** In 2016, Nasu's favorite Servant for this game was Medb, having her (at NP Lv. 5) in his primary party. It's likely Saber Medb was created at his request.
** Takeuchi's favorites are Saber Shiki and Sakata Kintoki. This is because early on [[{{Irony}} he never managed to summon a Saber-face]]...
** In the 5th Anniversary Famitsu Q&A when asked what servant released in Grand Order that wasn’t designed by him was his favorite, Takashi Takeuchi stated that it was Merlin.
** keikenchi's favorite Servant is Medusa (Rider), which explains her having an event damage bonus, a cameo, and/or featured in Craft Essence art in every GUDAGUDA event.
* CrossDressingVoices:
** [[Creator/RumiOokubo Astolfo]], [[Creator/MaayaSakamoto Young Alexander]], [[Creator/AyaEndo Ko-Gil]], [[Creator/UraraTakano Billy the Kid]], [[Creator/MiyukiSawashiro Rama]], [[Creator/NanakoMori Lanling Wang]], [[Creator/YukaTerasaki Paris]], and [[Creator/YukaIguchi Voyager]] are all voiced by women.
** [[Creator/InoriMinase Sima Yi]] may also count due to being an active male Heroic Spirit inhabiting a female human vessel, which is indicated when her voice becomes lower.
** [[Creator/RieKugimiya Oda Kippoushi]] is a strange case, as [[AmbiguousGenderIdentity they]] serve as Avenger Nobu's second Ascension yet keep her voice actress.
** Trans man Creator/ShikiAoki provides the voice of the female Jacques de Molay.
* {{Defictionalization}}: Certain in-game and in-universe objects have been made into real-life items like Blackbeard's shirt from his final Ascension art and the Musashi cushion from Osakabe-hime's room. Merlin’s flower-shaped earrings were also made real.
* DemandOverload: Has happened a few times due to the timed nature of events and the rerollers and account sellers trying to get the new Servants as quickly as possible. To prevent this, [=DelightWorks=] has been cracking down on them.
** The most infamous occurrence of this was the Halloween 2015 event as the timed battles for event currency, everyone trying to log on to play the event as fast as possible combined with the heavily hyped Tamamo gacha crashed the game within an hour. DW upgraded their servers to handle this, and it seems to have worked so far, although the 2016 Valentine's Event showed that it still wasn't completely worked out.
** The Fate/Zero Accel Order with its five new Servants, one of which was limited, players trying to go through the missions as fast as possible, the unstable servers, the hundreds of rerollers and account sellers from China and Taiwan trying to get the new Servants who were later IP banned which led to further instability, and the reveal of Angra Mainyu in the Friend Point gacha causing thousands of players using lots of time and FP to get him, led to five maintenances on the first day of the event. It didn't help that the developers were transferring data to new servers which taxed the already unpredictable servers.
** In general, post-Accel Order, the game's managed to avoid these problems, though during particularly popular or intense events the game can sometimes have intermittent connection issues as the now-gargantuan playerbase [=DDoSes=] the servers and their ISP by ''fiat''; Summer 2017 was a good example of this.
** After more than a year and a half of great effort and reliable scheduling, the combined hype of the ''Cosmos in the Lostbelt'' prologue, the biggest New Year's reward campaign in the game's history, one of the biggest guaranteed gachas in the game's history and the release of Foreigner Hokusai at last brought the game completely to its knees on New Year's Day 2018 in Japan, resulting in nearly twelve hours of downtime, interrupted only by a brief half-hour whimper of activity in hour 8 before the servers promptly burst into flame again.
* DevelopmentGag:
** Kirschtaria's [[spoiler:final confrontation in Olympus]] has him use buffs named after the seven Singularities [[spoiler:to indicate how he triumphed over them in the Foreign God's simulations.]] However, his sixth buff is named Jerusalem, not Camelot, as a reference to how the Sixth Singularity was originally set up as Jerusalem before development changed and [[spoiler:implying that Kirschtaria never met the Lion King, even in his simulations.]]
** Altria Avalon appears in [[spoiler:U-Olga Marie's recreation of fighting seven Grand Servants as the Grand Saber, which is referencing how the original plan for the sixth Lostbelt involved her debuting as the Grand Saber.]]
** Hassan of the Shining Star is stated to be Hassan of Serenity's predecessor in the lineage of Hassan-i-Sabbah, drawing upon how he was literally the Assassin Servant conceived and discarded in favor of Serenity in the plot of ''Fate/Prototype: Fragments of Sky Silver''.
* DistancedFromCurrentEvents: The eighth summer event features the cast returning to Hawaii, only to find that it's a complete mess from Servants who arrived earlier running amok, which includes Cernunnos as a major obstacle setting the city on fire. At the time of said event's release, the Hawaiian island of Maui suffered major wildfires so [[https://twitter.com/fgoproject/status/1690000599746519040 the official FGO twitter]] had to release a content warning noting that the event featured unintentional major similarities to this real life event with last minute updates made to tone down the severity of the fire depicted in-game.
* DummiedOut: The game has data for a type of enemy called "Pict Warriors", which are a variation of the standard human soldier enemy. They did appear in Caesar's Rank Up quest when it first came out but were replaced with Roman Soldiers later on. The second part of Avalon la Fae ''finally'' added the Lancer variant back as "Royal Clan Veteran" enemies.
* ExecutiveMeddling:
** Several artists (Mineji Sakamoto, Akira Ishida, Toh Azuma, Simaudon among others) have mentioned having different designs in mind for their drafted Servants before being told to adjust them to make them HotterAndSexier.
** Nasu has mentioned that it was only at Takeuchi's request to have Servants like Minamoto no Raikou and Ushiwakamaru go through a HistoricalGenderFlip, otherwise they'd have been the same gender as their IRL counterparts.
** Similarly, another thing attributed to being created at Takeuchi's insistence is EMIYA (Alter), which the writers initially met with resistance since they didn't see an evil version of the character possible but had to go through with his request.
* FanCommunityNicknames: Players of ''F/GO'' are called "Masters", based on the PrestigiousPlayerTitle for the player character.
* FollowTheLeader: While games such as ''VideoGame/PuzzleAndDragons'' and ''VideoGame/MonsterStrike'' helped popularize the gacha genre in Japan since 2012-2013 and ''VideoGame/GranblueFantasy'' helped in boosting the anime artstyle and medieval fantasy settings even further as the go-to standard for most gacha games since 2014, it is only after ''VideoGame/FateGrandOrder'''s success since 2015 that the Japanese gacha market took notice of the high profitability of gacha games [[LicensedGame being based on]] [[CashCowFranchise existing anime and video game franchises]]. Following this trend, a lot of fantasy franchise-based gacha games have then spawned, such as ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyBraveExvius'' (2015), ''VideoGame/FireEmblemHeroes'' (2017), ''VideoGame/MagiaRecordPuellaMagiMadokaMagicaSideStory'' (2017, also having similar gameplay mechanics and distributed by Aniplex like this game) and ''VideoGame/TheSevenDeadlySinsGrandCross'' (2019) among others.
* InspirationForTheWork:
** ''VideoGame/ChainChronicle'' among other mobile games was what got Nasu to start seriously thinking about the smartphone as a new medium for stories and the feasibility of making ''Grand Order''.
** Nasu has also cited Creator/MaayaSakamoto as a personal muse whose songs inspired certain character story arcs with "[[https://youtu.be/v03hvHJMfW0 Scrap ~ Breakup Ballad]]" being the inspiration for Dr. Roman's arc[[note]]Nasu even wanted it to serve as the theme song for ''Grand Order'' before Takeuchi persuaded him to get Sakamoto to write a new song, which eventually became "Shikisai"[[/note]] and "[[https://youtu.be/JHFPznfPp8E Replica]]" being the inspiration for Bedivere's arc and the [[spoiler:twist that Bedivere's Airgetlam arm is actually Excalibur]] to tie the whole story together.
* LyingCreator: Nasu had stated on his blog after Camelot's release that Babylon would be about 300 kb as a PDF. Come October 2016, it's revealed that he lied about that and it's now about 1000 pages long.
* MarthDebutedInSmashBros: Due to the franchise's many cases of NoExportForYou, several Servants and concepts from the Nasuverse as a whole made their official Western debut before their source material. Of special note is ''Koha-Ace'' since none of the material to provide any context for Okita and Nobunaga got translated so the localization team resorted to quickly translating ''Fate/Gudaguda Order'' a few weeks before the pair's in-game debut to tell players ahead of time who they were.
** Several Servants from ''Apocrypha'' like Siegfried, its version of Vlad III, Shakespeare, Spartacus, and Atalante made their debut in the West four months before the anime came to Netflix.
** As ''Fragments'' has not been officially translated, the game's western release marks the official debut of all of its Servants. There's also Proto Cú Chulainn since ''Anime/FatePrototype'' was never officially translated into English.
** From ''Extra CCC'' there's Hans Christian Andersen, Elisabeth Bathory, B.B., Passionlip, Meltryllis, and Kiara Sesshouin, since the second ''Extra'' game was never translated. Elisabeth is also a double example since she actually appeared months ago in 2017 in ''VideoGame/FateExtellaTheUmbralStar''. The same goes for Suzuka Gozen since the ''Extra CCC Fox Tail'' manga was never officially translated.
** From ''Requiem'', there's Voyager, Utsumi Erice, and Kijyo Koyo as the novels have not been released officially outside of Japan.
* MeaningfulReleaseDate: Napoleon Bonaparte was officially released in the game on the eve of Bastille Day.
* MemeAcknowledgement:
** The promotion for Sasaki Kojirou's animation update shows him facing off wyverns, a nod to his MemeticBadass status as "Savior of France".
** It seems that the Japanese team keeps up with the overseas fandom and made it possible to call Ibaraki a Banana Oni during the 2018 summer event. Which is a nickname that originated in the western fan base. The English localization team managed to get a head start and allowed players to call her a fearsome banana oni in the NA Illya event.
** Nasu noted in an April 2020 blog post that Kirschtaria is "the big brother who gives everyone apples" as a nod to how everyone started joking about him giving away apples for the Olympus pre-release campaign.
* TheMerch: A truly obscene amount of merchandise has existed since the game's launch courtesy of Aniplex and Lasengle with plushies, [=CDs=], t-shirts, keychains, figures, pencils, and many other forms of sellable goods related to the game's large cast and concepts. As of this writing, [[https://www.aniplexplus.com/CasXoPOs over 600 items]] related to ''Grand Order'' can be bought on Aniplex's online store in Japan.
* NewbieBoom:
** It almost goes without saying that the tens-of-millions-of-downloads-and-counting game that makes [[CashCowFranchise millions of dollars]] every ''month'' and is one of the most successful "mobile [=RPGs=]" ever has brought quite a number of new fans into ''Fate'' and the wider Nasuverse, even within the English fandom. ''Grand Order'''s newbie inertia helped spawn the ''Apocrypha'' anime adaptation, among other things.
** Nasu himself acknowledged in [[http://www.4gamer.net/games/266/G026651/20170302098/ this interview]] that it's all but certain that the ''vast'' majority of the game's players, at this point, hadn't played a ''Fate'' game prior to ''Grand Order'', with the second player survey held in 2016 pointing to ''Grand Order'' as a major entry point for the franchise. Shiokawa, the game's director at [=DelightWorks=] at the time, also acknowledged that keeping the game friendly to both total newbies and series vets has been a long-standing goal.
* NoDubForYou: Continuing the practice of not dubbing Type-Moon games, the official localization has no English voice over due to costs of dubbing hundreds of characters, paying actors the same amount of money to do Berserker lines that they'd pay someone to dub over long-winded characters like Nero or Ozymandias, and [[UsefulNotes/UnionsInHollywood union issues]] that would arise should this game gets an English dub[[note]]Actor's unions like SAG/AFTRA aren't keen on video game voice work that constantly adds new content that would require voice acting for new characters, while the OVA's English dub was union-contracted[[/note]]. It is subverted though with the OVA and the Babylonia anime adaptations and VR game receiving one.
* NoExportForYou:
** The game was unlicensed outside Japan and China until June 25, 2017 when the game was released... for the United States and Canada only. On April 19, 2018, the English server became officially available in Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, and Australia. In August 2022, it became available in a number of European and Latin American countries and New Zealand. So, if you're in any other region, you'll still have to wait (or just download it from a third-party app). The biggest kick in the groin out of all this was to Malaysians, when they announced that the game will be launched in Malaysia alongside Singapore and Thailand, but pulled out due to “unforeseen circumstances” in the last minute. In February 2022, [[https://fate-go.us/news/?category=NEWS&article=%2Fiframe%2F2022%2F0224_news%2F&fbclid=IwAR2CsBzJq363Yv_rMRMbXwoJ7KRd22tjxJefp8t02LAF3DxB2SIHCQsXTtA Vietnamese regulations have forced the game to be discontinued]] in that country.
** To no one's surprise, ''F/GO Arcade'' is Japan-only. There is also VersionExclusiveContent that may not be implemented in the main game, meaning that for the servants, skins and CE’s that don’t make it, non-Japanese players will never gain access to them.
** Several pieces of non-game media have not been given the export treatment, like the manga anthologies, most of the official manga adaptations and spinoffs, ''Teach Us! FGO'', the ''Moonlight/Lostroom'' OVA, the stage play adaptations, and the material books. ''Moonlight/Lostroom'' would eventually be officially available to stream on December 31, 2019. This was due to it tying it into the Part 2 prologue that was currently going on in the English server just like how its original release was scheduled around the Japanese server in 2017.
** Due to a ruling from the Belgian Gaming Commission that bans loot boxes and gacha games under the basis of gambling, and Creator/SquareEnix and Creator/{{Nintendo}} being forced to pull their mobile games out of the Belgium market, it's very likely that ''Fate/Grand Order'' will never be released in Belgium.
** As Anime Japan is a Japan-only event, the story linked to the 2016 Heaven's Feel and Fate/Extra Last Encore event is not available in NA. However, the CE rewards eventually did appear in the NA server.
** As of July 29 2021, the official soundtracks are available internationally on streaming services... except for ''Fate/Grand Order Original Soundtrack IV'' which is region-locked to Japan because it contains content unreleased in the NA server[[note]]What makes this particularly egregious is that ''Fate/Grand Order: Waltz in the Moonlight/Lostroom Original Soundtrack'' is internationally available, and its game hasn't left Japan either[[/note]].
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Due to health reasons, Creator/RisaTaneda had to drop out in late September 2016 with Creator/RieTakahashi as her replacement for Shielder who would be providing voice work from October onwards due to the need for lines for weekly master missions. Taneda's voice work for Kiyohime, Marie, and Mata Hari remains unchanged.
** Creator/MegumiToyoguchi was replaced by Creator/MadokaYonezawa as the voice of Olga Marie for the anime special and onwards since the former was on maternity leave when recording started.
** Mordred was originally voiced by Creator/HoukoKuwashima in the 2006 Studio DEEN adaptation of ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' and in the ''Realta Nua'' voiced VN remake; as of ''Grand Order'' Creator/MiyukiSawashiro has become the character's official voice actress.
** Similar to Mordred, Bedivere was voiced by Creator/MamikoNoto in the 2006 ''Fate/stay Night'' anime, Creator/ShinichiroMiki in the [=PS2=] version of ''Realta Nua'', Creator/MitsuakiMadono for the PS Vita version of ''Realta Nua'', and is currently voiced by Creator/MamoruMiyano.
** An English dub example: because the ''Babylonia'' anime adaptation is a union-contracted dub, Merlin is voiced by Creator/RobbieDaymond, whereas his cameo appearance in ''Literature/FateApocrypha'' (a non-union dub) is voiced by Creator/KhoiDao.
** In the anime of ''Literature/FateApocrypha'', Creator/AyaEndo was the voice actress of Morgan Le Fey. Come to this game, Creator/YuiIshikawa would go on to replace Endo as the VA for Morgan Le Fey.
** In the English dub of the ''Camelot'' movie, J.P. Karilak is now voicing Gawain instead of Creator/ChrisPatton.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Creator/SatoshiTsuruoka's first ''Fate'' series voice job is [[Literature/FateZero Gilles de Rais]]. Nowadays, he's more known for voicing Arash. Must be the '''[[CallingYourAttacks "STELLA!!!!"]]''' thing at work.
** Creator/JojiNakata usually voices sinister antagonists like Araya Souren of ''Kara no Kyoukai'' fame or Kotomine Kirei from ''Fate/stay night''. In this game, he voices the unambiguously heroic (but still utterly terrifying) King Hassan.
** Creator/TadahisaSaizen is mostly known for the roaring voice of Heracles. Players of VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsOriginalGeneration might recognize the voice style of [[Characters/SuperRobotWarsOriginalGenerationSteelDragonBattleGroup Kai Kitamura]] coming out from Georgios. But... Edward Teach/Blackbeard?? Bet you wouldn't expect the same dignified voice of Saizen was able to produce a hilarious [[MetaGuy meta]] [[DirtyOldMan pervy uncle]].
** Creator/MikakoKomatsu, who usually cast as {{Genki Girl}}s, including those in the game like Xuanzang and Hildr, has also surprisingly voiced the aggressive, low pitched Caenis.
* ProductionForeshadowing: To commemorate the game's first anniversary in Japan, a book with contributions from all the artists and writers who worked on the game was released. Meteo Hoshizora, one of the writers for this game, remarked that he wished Sanson would get more than his brief screen time in Orleans. A year and a half later, Sanson was one of the leading characters in Salem.
* PromotedFanboy:
** Creator/NobunagaShimazaki (VA for the male protagonist, Arjuna, and Edmond Dantes) is this, having a large Type-Moon collection as shown off in a magazine interview, Kohaku is his favorite ''VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}}'' character, which he's declared several times on livestreams, and he's spent a lot of money trying to roll his favorite Servants or those he did the voice for. Nobunaga also frequently cosplays as characters he voiced based on their Craft Essence artwork. He promotes ''Grand Order'' whenever he can, and during a livestream, the other actors there joked that he should be Type-Moon's fan ambassador since he's such a big fan.
** Like Creator/NobunagaShimazaki, Creator/MinamiTanaka (Nitocris's VA) is one huge ''Fate'' fan and has loved the franchise ever since ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' was first released when she was a young girl. Now, she gets to voice a Servant of her own, host the ''Chaldea Radio'' sessions alongside Creator/RieTakahashi (Mash's VA), where Minami gets to show off her extensive knowledge of ''Fate'' lore and teach her how to play ''FGO'', ''and'' personally get to meet and hang out with some of the [=VAs=] of ''Fate Stay Night'' herself in person (watch her {{Squee}} in delight when Creator/KanaUeda, Creator/NorikoShitaya, Creator/MaiKadowaki, and Creator/AyakoKawasumi guest star in ''Chaldea Radio''). Oh, and she's also a big Cu Chulainn fangirl.
** Rei Hiroe (best known as the creator of ''Manga/BlackLagoon'') is a longtime fan of the Fate franchise and has drawn {{doujinshi}} of ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' in the past. He would later design Quetzalcoatl for this game.
** The developers have become well known for bringing on fan-artists of the game to create Servant designs and [=CEs=].
** Once upon a time, there was a little girl who loved Type-Moon's works such as ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'', and even started livestreaming her plays of ''Grand Order'' in 2022. Fast forward about a year and [[https://twitter.com/fgoproject/status/1680900320120152064?t=TZHAgw5GnurSCaWt6j2zBg&s=19 she's become the ambassador for the JP server's 8th Anniversary.]] Her name? [[WebAnimation/{{hololive}} Usada Pekora]].
** {{Inverted|Trope}} for Nasu where he's thrilled that this game has given him the opportunity to collaborate with various artists he admires, especially CHOCO of ''VideoGame/{{Xenosaga}} III'' fame and Chica Umino of ''Manga/MarchComesInLikeALion'' fame for designing Tam Lin Lancelot and Oberon respectively.
* RealLifeRelative:
** The Dioscuri twins, Castor and Pollux, are voiced by real-life siblings Creator/YuumaUchida and Creator/MaayaUchida, respectively. Amusingly, Castor is the older sibling of Pollux, which is the inverse of their voice actors.
** [[LikeAnOldMarriedCouple All the bickering]] that Romani and [=DaVinci=] get into becomes much funnier when you remember that Creator/KenichiSuzumura and Creator/MaayaSakamoto, their respective Japanese voice actors, have been married since 2011.
* RecastAsARegular: Creator/NobunagaShimazaki first appeared in the Franchise/FateSeries as one of Hassan of the Hundred Personas' many bodies in only one episode of ''Literature/FateZero''. In ''Grand Order'', he voices the male protagonist in all related adaptations or appearances in other media, as well as the Servants Arjuna, his Alter counterpart, and Edmond Dantes, all of whom make notable appearances in the main story and have been given costumes with extensive voicework to supplement their already existing set of lines.
* TheRedStapler: A lot of things in-game have been made into real items, such as the Quick, Arts and Buster shirts, as well as a giant Musashi cushion in Osakabe-hime's room.
* RefittedForSequel:
** Mash's design had been cut off twice before becoming official in ''Fate/Grand Order''. She was supposed to be the "stray Servant" who survived the Fourth Holy Grail War in ''Fate/stay night'' and a secret heroine before she was scrapped. Then, she was planned to be introduced as an anime-only Servant in the 2006 anime who would [[spoiler:be a HistoricalGenderFlip version of Galahad who would have hindered Saber in place of Assassin]] but was once again scrapped. The design has been finally officially used in ''GO'' as Mash Kyrielight now.
** "Chibi-Hassan", a child personality of Hundred-Faced Hassan who was [[WhatCouldHaveBeen the focus of a cut subplot]] from ''Literature/FateZero'', made her official debut in this game in their Interlude, which goes into detail on her relationship with the other personalities.
** Red Hare being a centaur was originally a concept that was proposed for portraying Lu Bu as a fusion with his horse in ''VideoGame/FateExtra'' but scrapped due to modelling and budget constraints. This concept was revived for its debut in the third Lostbelt.
** [[AllThereInTheManual Reference materials]] relating to ''Literature/FateApocrypha'' reveal that before ultimately being implemented for ''Grand Order'', David, Benkei, Georgios, and Kintoki were considered during early concepts back when it was considered to be a online game before being scrapped for one reason or another.
** Prior to his inclusion in Ordeal Call II, Hassan of the Shining Star was considered to be the Assassin for ''Anime/FatePrototype Fragments of Silver Sky'' before Hassan of Serenity was chosen over him for the series' Assassin.
* ReleaseDateChange: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, [[https://news.fate-go.jp/2020/0422wpxg/ the JP version of the game delayed the]] ''Literature/FateRequiem'' collaboration event from late April 2020 to May 25, 2020.
* RoleReprise: Almost every actor who appeared in prior ''Fate'' works continues to voice them. One notable case is Creator/TakumiYamazaki, who returned to voice Kayneth for the "Fate/Accel Zero Order" rerun as the event's shopkeeper with what amounts to about just five lines. Creator/ShowHayami returned to voice Tokiomi for "Saber Wars II" in the same manner.
* SerendipityWritesThePlot: The writing team's attempt to travel to Mauna Kea Observatory for research was blocked because of bad weather, but they decided that the trees on the volcano's slope they passed along the way back was more suitably eldritch [[spoiler:for the final showdown with BB, so they switched it to that as the final location for the third summer event.]]
* SpoiledByTheMerchandise: Because of the shared universe, several details from future Nasuverse stories are spoiled by this game.
** Arash and Brynhild's physical appearances made their debut here before ''Fate/Prototype Fragments'' did, and they were essentially the same regarding them as Servants. They actually made narrative appearances within the novel, but they had no illustration and their descriptions were not enough to make out how they looked. Brynhild's profile also revealed how her Noble Phantasm worked before it was revealed in ''Fragments'', though some of its details were spoiled even further back then by Passionlip (who has Brynhild as one of her components) in ''CCC''.
** In "Saber Wars", Blackbeard while teasing Saber Gilles mentions that one of the characters from ''Fate/strange Fake'', the girl who calls herself Francesca, is actually a vampire known as François Prelati, the one who gave him the R'lyeh text, before ''strange Fake'' implicitly revealed it. On the other hand, Ryohgo Narita (the author) has stated [[https://twitter.com/ryohgo_narita/status/689783200860626944 on]] [[https://twitter.com/ryohgo_narita/status/689784101377695744 Twitter]] that there was more to it than what was revealed in the event.
** Suzuka Gozen's inclusion in the game has spoiled how her Noble Phantasms work, and also revealed her true NP which hasn't even been hinted at in the manga.
** Voyager's true identity and class is revealed in this game when it is still a mystery in his home novel. Likewise, Kijyo Koyo's humanoid form makes its first appearance here, which the existence of such is only alluded in the novel.
** It was revealed in a 5th anniversary interview that the usage of [[spoiler:Olga Marie]] in ''Webcomic/LearningWithMangaFGO'' during the first year of its run had inadvertently spoiled vital plot points for ''Cosmos in the Lostbelt''.
* ThrowItIn:
** Takeuchi came up with Santa Alter on a whim and started pushing her to be the main character of the Christmas event, forcing Nasu to write the event script for him.
** Raita designed a goofy ''Franchise/KamenRider''-themed variant of Kintoki for laughs, and showed it to the rest of the staff. They loved it, and his addition to the actual game ensued.
** pako, the artist for Edison, decided to give him a lion head for fun. The writers were taken aback by this but decided to incorporate it into his character and the America chapter.
** Shizuki Morii's original design for Ishtar was turned into Ereshkigal since Nasu didn't want to abandon it and just decided to have Rin host another goddess, rewriting parts of Babylon for this new version of Ereshkigal. This may be the most notable throw-in, as this casual last-minute decision and rewrite ended up creating one of ''F/GO'''s biggest {{Breakout Character}}s.
** Nobukatsu was created after pako sent them a drawing of a hypothetical male version of Nobunaga which they decided to spin off into his own separate character.
** Benienma's speaking pattern was created after the writers saw her artist's idly speculating on her chirping like a sparrow and lisping in her character sheet.
** The illustrator for Mysterious Heroine X, Bunbun, felt bereft of any ideas to take the original MHX design and decided to just give her a sci-fi outfit with her Excalibur upgraded to a [[Franchise/StarWars lightsaber]]. To their surprise, Nasu not only approved it, but made MHX's third Ascension the pivotal keystone in terms of aesthetics for which the Servant Universe would take its shape.
* TrollingCreator:
** With the hint at Edmond Dantes, many expected Creator/JojiNakata as an ActorAllusion to ''Anime/{{Gankutsuou}}'' with a CaptainErsatz of its Count. Instead, we got a young Count voiced by Creator/NobunagaShimazaki with the design done by the ''Franchise/DanganRonpa'' artist.
--->'''Nasu''': Were you expecting a mere Cavern King[[note]]Gankutsuou translated into English[[/note]]? Too bad! He was a Super High School Level Heroic Spirit instead!
** The keywords for Shimosa in the ''Epic of Remnant'' trailer included 'Inferno', 'Empireo', and 'Purgatorio', leading to speculation that Dante of ''Literature/TheDivineComedy'' fame would appear. [[spoiler:It's all a RedHerring from Ashiya Doman who intentionally picked a bunch of Italian terms to mess with the protagonist's and by extension the player's expectations.]]
** Miyamoto Musashi's profile in ''Fate/Grand Order Material V'' has a throwaway mention of "denial of nothingness", the first time in ''years'' the mysterious First True Magic has been brought up. Said line states that denial is only one part of interacting with Void and immediately declares they're going to omit that stuff to focus on other concepts.
* TroubledProduction: The game had a very notorious start with many QOL features missing, overworked servers, and a poor presentation overall. This effectively forced Type-Moon to scramble to help [=DelightWorks=] get things in working order as soon as possible, with things that were clearly not thought ahead of time having to be hastily crunched in days. One example is the very first story event had to be ''written and launched in a day'' because no one had informed the writers they needed a script to structure their event around until Nasu asked the day before deadline. It was so bad, it also bled into other projects as all ''VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}}'' work was effectively put on hold just to get ''Grand Order'' into an okay condition. It also was noticeably in bad enough condition for even TM staff to complain in frustration about the state of things ''an hour after the game released''. Luckily, with director Yosuke Shiokawa brought on-board to immediately help adjust the game back on track, the game managed to launch itself into being the runaway success it is today.
-->'''Nasu''': During launch date, within an hour after installing the game, TYPE-MOON’s headquarters was basically up in flames. We halted all the projects we were working on just so we could prioritize FGO, so some of the staff yelled at me before the players could. “We stopped all those projects for ''this''?!”
* UncreditedRole: Nasu has been noted to have a hand in giving certain stories he was not involved in scripting a rewrite to fit his lore or characterizations, as he admitted for the 7th anniversary interview in Famitsu that he gave "Sea Monster Crisis" scenes featuring Morgan, Ereshkigal, and Meltryllis a rewrite for the final version.
* UrbanLegendOfZelda: There are numerous rumors on how to roll a gold Servant from the gacha, from certain times of day to get a Great/Super Success before rolling. There is no actual proof to validate or disprove these as all rolls are determined on company servers and any actual look into the inner workings of the gacha would require access to them. Even Nasu believes some of these urban legends! Jokingly, fans also believe that using a "catalyst" (paraphernalia related to the servant in question) can raise the probabilities of summoning a certain servant.
* VacationDearBoy: Nasu mentioned in interviews that writing stories featuring locations like Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Rome has given him and the writing team opportunities to go on Aniplex-funded vacations in those places, ''ostensibly'' for research. Ironically in the case of Hawaii, though Nasu explicitly chose it because he had never been there before, he got a fever on the first day and was stuck resting in the hotel for the entire trip.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: [[WhatCouldHaveBeen/FateGrandOrder Has its own page here.]]
* WhyFandomCantHaveNiceThings: The sheer backlash towards Hikaru Sakurai writing Septem led to all writer credits being removed from all main story chapters and most events after Solomon to avoid more backlash with writers attached to certain stories.
* WordOfDante: The popular fanfic Fanfic/FragmentsOfChaldea plays with various aspects of canon work for the sake of its narrative, to the point that because of how lore-rich the Nasuverse is, things created for the fic are mistaken as actual canon lore.[[labelnote:*]]To give an example, the fic treats different versions of the same Servant by turning them into a CompositeCharacter. If a different version of an already summoned servant is summoned, it becomes a "Memorial Essence" and is absorbed into the already summoned servant, giving them access to that variant's memories and abilities, such as when EMIYA [Alter] was summoned, EMIYA gained his memories and access to his guns.[[/labelnote]]
* WordOfSaintPaul:
** [[https://twitter.com/motomurabito/ Murabito]], the main artist of Christopher Columbus, certainly enjoys making his own expansions of Columbus without any of them getting into the ''Fate'' canon. Chief amongst them are [[https://twitter.com/motomurabito/status/980467145409638403 Columbus Lily]], depicting Columbus in his childhood [[UsedToBeASweetKid where he was a normal, sweet, upstanding boy before greed eventually took over him]], and [[https://twitter.com/motomurabito/status/1122030438988468224 Columbus Alter]], his very own [[EvilCounterpart Good Counterpart]], owing to how Alter Servants are the same Servant with their morality inversed, meaning that he got his exaggerated HistoricalVillainUpgrade ''removed''[[note]]Though it was still ambiguous about whether this is Columbus when he was celebrated as one of America's Founding Fathers (before his controversies were revealed) or not[[/note]] and he got an AgeLift to portray himself younger and [[BeautyEqualsGoodness he's much more pleasant looking too.]] [[spoiler:The former ends up becoming official as Columbus Lily goes on to make an appearance in Chaldea Summer Adventure.]]
** Kuroboshi Kouhaku has stated that should Katsushika Hokusai get alternate classes, [[https://twitter.com/LolitaMajin/status/1294271680060067841/photo/1 they would also resemble Hokusai paintings]] (except for Berserker, who looks like Cthulhu, and Alter Ego, which is a swap that reveals Katsushika's human form.)
** Some of the officially published manga like ''From Lostbelt'' have a disclaimer that these are merely interpretations of the characters based on the manga author's own viewpoints and do not necessarily represent the authorial intent of Type-Moon or what would happen in the game.
* WorkingTitle:
** ''Epic of Remnant'''s working title was ''Remnant of Blues''.
** In the English version, Lostbelt 3 was advertised as being called "The Nation of Unified Knowledge, QIN". However, sometime before the chapter's release, the title was changed to "The Synchronized Intellect Nation, SIN".
* WriteWhoYouKnow: The general personalities of Mozart, Sanson, and Marie and their interactions were based on the three main writers of the game, Nasu, Higashide, and Sakurai.
