1	* BreakawayPopHit: Music/HenryMancini's catchy "Baby Elephant Walk" made it onto the pop charts as an instrumental number as recorded by various bands and has remained iconic enough on its own.
2	* CreatorBacklash: Red Buttons, a liberal Democrat, later said that he greatly regretted his "gross misapprehension" line because he felt it was homophobic.
3	* FakeIrish: Creator/JohnWayne as Sean Mercer.
4	* FakeNationality: Luis (actor born in New-Mexico) as a Mexican. Also, the Indian is not played by a Native American. However, Kurt is played by a German actor, Chips and Brandy are both played by French actors, Dallas is played by an Italian actress, and Red Buttons was indeed a New-Yorker.
5	* LoopingLines: Much of the action sequence audio had to be re-dubbed due to Creator/JohnWayne's cursing while wrestling with the animals.
6	* NoAnimalsWereHarmed: Very luckily played straight, as all the animals in the chase scenes are actually wild and untrained and the actors themselves do the catching. As far as we know, no animals or people were injured.
7	* TechnologyMarchesOn: The method of capturing animals shown in the film is legally prohibited nowadays, due to possibility of injuring and even killing animals. Tranquilizers and dart guns are used instead.
8	* ThrowItIn: The rhino in the second chase really did escape, and they just kept the cameras rolling and caught it again.

10	** Creator/ClarkGable had agreed to star in the movie with Creator/JohnWayne, provided he received first billing on the opening credits, and one million dollars, plus ten percent of the gross. Paramount, however, would not raise the budget to finance Gable, so the script was radically changed. Gable died twelve days before filming began.
11	** Creator/HowardHawks was keen to pair up Creator/WilliamHolden, a keen conservationist, with either John Wayne or Gable.
12	** Creator/PatrickMcGoohan was considered for the role of Kurt Muller.

15	* WritingByTheSeatOfYourPants: Shooting started without a complete script. Writer Leigh Brackett was hired at a later date to retrofit the animal footage into a cohesive storyline.
