* In episode 7, the brainwashed ace of Voldor's garrison and his children's vain attempt at reaching him with a Walkure song.
* Messer's death in episode 10. Yes, the death flags were being waved hard during this episode, especially since before that Messer made his biggest steps forward in sharing his feelings for Kaname to her, without actually confessing. The fact that he dies after his BigDamnHeroes moment saving Walkure, while giving Kaname a RousingSpeech to encourage her makes it all the more sadder.
** What really sells it is how Kaname just freezes up and collapses on her knees when this happens. It seems Messer's feelings did reach her after all, making her take his loss the hardest. What's even worse is that the episode actually aired a few days before her birthday.
** Just to drive it in, the closing song is even replaced with Kaname's ''AXIA'' a SolemnEndingTheme that plays over Messer's final fight and over the end credits, which comes with melancholy lyrics befitting of the scene.
--> ''[[LoveHurts Seeing you so far off, I love and hate you]].''
** The movie version in ''Passionate Walkure'' makes this even worse; rather than dying instantly from Keith shooting him through the cockpit, he actually ''evades'' the shot that kills him in the TV version, in a HopeSpot that Messer might be SparedByTheAdaptation ala [[Anime/MacrossFrontier Michael]]. Nope; Messer succumbs to overexertion and [[DiedInYourArmsTonight passes away in Kaname's arms instead.]]
* In relation to the above, ALL of Chaos gathered and saluting Messer's coffin at his funeral. Kaname shedding a tear doesn't help, either.
** And at the end of this episode, the gang performing a traditional Ragnan funeral for Messer. Walkure one by one send him off with the song ''GIRAFFE BLUES'', ending with Kaname who declares to Mikumo that she has another rival for the sake of her fan.
* Chuck telling the rest of Delta Platoon that Messer deliberately acted like a Jerkass so that if he were ever to succumb to Var Syndrome, it would be easier for [[ShootTheDog his wingmates to shoot him down.]]
* Episode 13. Oh boy. During the battle on Ragna, a fold bomb is used on the underwater Protoculture ruins, with the explosion killing many (with Hayate himself almost among the casualties). The resultant tsunami also strikes the Ragnyannyan; Chuck's sister manages to close the door in time to save the children, but is herself washed away. Making this worse, the NUNS forces who activated the bomb apparently had no illusions that it would actually halt Windermere's plans; they seem to have done it solely to get data on Protoculture technology, regardless of the casualties involved.
* Episode 15 suggests that there are some tension among the Windermerians too. Many of them asked 'War is not ending?' when their kingdom declares the creation of the Starwind Sector. And strains are starting to appear between the younger Aerial Knight pilots and the elders, each having a different idea of how far Windermere should go to assure its independence. The NUNS' actions throughout the 5+ years period does not help matters at all. All of this combined and you get a feeling that nothing's ever turned out well for the planet's people.
** [=NUNS's=] bombing of Windermere and the aftermath draw an allusion to both [[{{UsefulNotes/Japan}} the end]] and [[UsefulNotes/NaziGermany the beginning]] of a [[UsefulNotes/WorldWarII certain horrifying real-life event]].
* Episode 16: While the episode is generally heartwarming (as Freyja's birthday is being celebrated) as Mirage sees Hayate and Freyja play in the snow that Hayate got for Freyja's birthday. As she sees how close they are, she cries a single tear, implying she's had a BelatedLoveEpiphany about Hayate....right when he and Freyja have all but cemented their own relationship.
** During this scene, Kaname and Arad gaze for a few seconds at each other, before looking away quickly. It's clear that the events from episode 10 heavily influence their relationship. It's not clear whether they avoid each other because they'd feel guilty if they're happy together, or because they don't want to talk about Messer's death. But it's clear he's on their mind during that scene.
* Episode 17:
** Every scene that Mirage has, she looks miserable as she continues to see how close Hayate and Freyja are.
** When Arad tells of their plan to infiltrate Voldor again, Kaname looks in pain as she remembers Messer.
** When Freyja and Hayate are talking, Hayate mentions that he hasn't seen his mom in a while. When Freyja jokingly tells him that he should make more effort as she's family, Hayate blows it off saying a few years isn't that big of a deal. Freyja looks hurt when she realizes just how different their sense of time is and Hayate realizes what he's said, only looks in guilt. To emphasise the point, Freyja's Rune (which has been glowing ever since her birthday, to the point Mikumo teases her about her feelings for Hayate) ''stops glowing''.
** Hayate [[WhatTheHellHero exploding at Arad for hiding that his father dropped the bomb on Windermere.]]
*** Arad mentions that Wright Immelman liked playing with Windemerian kids and that "He was too kind for his own good." One have to wonder what he was thinking when he dropped the dimensional bomb on NUNS own base...
** The effect of this revelation on Hayate and Freyja's relationship.
* Episode 20:
** Freyja being ''unable to bring herself to sing''. Becoming a singer like her predecessors has been Freyja's dream as long as she can remember, but seeing Hayate suffer from what is effectively Var Syndrome [[PowerIncontinence because of her singing]] shakes her so badly she even considers giving up singing if it means Hayate can continue to fly.
** Although her [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan rant]] to Hayate and Freyja was immensely satisfying, Mirage has to say "I love you" in the plural sense to conceal her feelings for Hayate, both for Freyja's sake and because she hasn't figured out her own feelings for Hayate.
* Episode 22: Cassim crash-landing on rock, receiving deadly injuries, rather than save himself by crashing the plane on an orchard, the symbol of everything he's fighting for, and dies seeing a vision of his son. Thankfully, Cassim is SparedByTheAdaptation in ''Passionate Walkure'', and is later seen in ''Zettai Live'' flying alongside the other Aerial Knights.
* Episode 23: Everything about the dimension bomb. But most of all, the confirmation that [[HarmfulToMinors Freyja was there to see it happen]], with this being the source of all of Freyja's memories of something burning on Windermere.
** Made even worse by the fact that Wright was [[SmallRoleBigImpact responsible for kicking Freyja's interest in music off by giving her a music player, putting her on the path to flee Windermere, meet Wright's son (and her love interest) and live out her dreams]]. The person responsible for putting Freyja on the path to everything great in her life also caused ''the worst moment of her entire childhood'' to happen.
* Episode 24: Makina noticed a sniper aiming at Freyja and pushed her out of the way, TakingTheBullet. Reina looked horrified while Kaname tries to close the wound ignoring her knees are bloodied with Makina's blood, Then, Makina tearfully tells the girls to keep on singing.
** Even by the finale, Makina has not fully recovered, albeit due to [[{{Determinator}} sheer willpower]] manages to power through her bullet wound and sing with Walkure.
* The ending to the TV series has a minor moment; while Roid was slain in a HeroicSacrifice by Keith, Hayate and Freyja finally get together, and Mikumo was freed from being used as a PersonOfMassDestruction, [[YourDaysAreNumbered the story ends with the implication that Freyja doesn't have long to live as a result of her crystallisation]], which she and Hayate briefly reflect on.
* The ending to ''Absolute Live'' has a major one: '''[[TheHeroDies Freyja's death]]'''. The first time in the franchise where the LoveInterest actually ''dies'' as well as the culmination of her entire arc throughout ''Delta'', and the movie does not hesitate to lay on the tragedy;
** The series (and ''Passionate Walkure'', which the film follows up on) ends with the implication that Freyja won't have long to live due to her singing career causing her Rune to drain what remains of her lifespan. ''Absolute Live'' follows up on this plot thread, with [[HeroicRROD her crystallisation worsening when she sings]] to counter [[EvilCounterpart Yami_Q_Ray]], forcing Kaname to bench her out of concern for her health.
** Mikumo's reaction to realising Freyja will die if she uses her Rune to sing again. For most of ''Delta'', Mikumo has been a SternTeacher to Freyja trying to bring out her potential, even being incredibly harsh to her at times, but the realisation that she is likely going to die soon causes [[NotSoStoic Mikumo]] to start crying, revealing her true feelings towards her fellow singer and friend, despite Freyja's best attempts to comfort her.
** Freyja spends most of the series as ThePollyanna, recovering very quickly from events such as Windermere's declaration of war and the revelation that Wright Immelmann dropped a fold bomb on her planet. [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness However, realising exactly how close she is to death drives her to tears and causes her to declare she doesn't want to die while embracing Hayate.]]
** From the same scene, Hayate and Freyja PlanningForTheFutureBeforeTheEnd, with the former talking about wanting to start an apple farm with the latter and promising to spend the rest of his life with her. It's clear neither one ''wants'' the inevitable to happen, and [[ForegoneConclusion yet...]]
** However, during the final battle, Freyja [[HeroicSacrifice pulls herself from her bed and sings with the rest of Walkure]], managing to synchronise with Hayate once more and ensure Heimdall's defeat.....at the cost of her own life. To make matters worse, the other members of Walkure are visibly pained to see her join in knowing full well what will happen if she does, but are eventually moved by her determination to sing.
** The lyrics of ''ALIVE ~Inori no Uta~'', the legendary Windermerean song Freyja sings as well as the end credits song, make the entirety of it worse if you understand them. Essentially, they come off as Freyja's final goodbye, knowing she won't survive singing again, and entrusting the future to her friends.
--> ''Let this simple dream resonate''
--> ''Though my body full of love burns away, I'll entrust this warmth to a new future.''
--> ''[[DyingDeclarationOfLove From all my heart, I love you]]''
** The actual death scene itself. Freyja spends her final moments [[DiedInYourArmsTonight in Hayate's arms]] overlooking Windermere, [[DyingDeclarationOfLove declaring their love for each other]] while playing the [[CallBack simple word game Wright played with Hayate]] and her final act is to give him a LastKiss, dying [[GoOutWithASmile with a small smile on her face.]]
** Walkure singing ''Uchuu no Kakera'' after Freyja dies and declaring [[TrueCompanions there will always be five of them]]. Furthermore, the fact that Freyja's hand is still in the Walkure hand gesture even after her death.
