1	* The look of despair on Pi's face when the boat sinks is truly heartbreaking, especially knowing that his family and everything else he loved was on the boat.
2	* Let's not forget Pi losing his entire family when the severe storm sinks their ship, leaving him as the only survivor (and whether you believe the story that you see or the alternative one that he makes up, this is still the result either way). Sure, it's kind of a ForegoneConclusion, but it doesn't make it any less heartbreaking. They had a much less significant part in the book, but in the movie, you very well ''do'' get the chance to become emotionally attached to them, making Pi's loss much more heavily felt.
3	** To make matters ''worse'', in the film Pi invites Ravi to come watch the storm with him when it's lights out and his parents are snoring. The last thing Ravi whispers to Pi is "Don't tempt a storm." Cue Pi going to the deck and screaming for more rain. [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor He gets rain]], enough to sink the boat. All Pi can do while being tossed into the lifeboat is to scream that he's sorry.
4	** Really, the fate of everybody save Pi and Richard Parker from the boat. Or the [[{{Jerkass}} racist Cook]] [[AssholeVictim who nobody liked]].
5	* Pi, who's been raised a vegetarian his entire life, is forced to capture and slaughter a fish for survival. The second the animal passes away, Pi breaks down in remorse.
6	--> '''Pi:''' (sobbing) "I am sorry. I AM SORRY! Thank you Lord Vishnu for coming in the form of a fish!"
7	* The look of sheer despair on Pi's face when Orange Juice is killed by the hyena, followed by him glaring furiously at the monster. Orange Juice tried defending the injured zebra, only to pay for it with her life.
8	* When the ever-optimistic and resourceful Pi finally loses hope.

10	** How about the storm scene before that, where’s he’s begging for God to spare Richard Parker?
11	-->”WHY ARE YOU SCARING HIM?! I lost my family, I lost everything! I SURRENDER! WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?!”
12	* During Pi's hallucination, we get [[http://www.artofvfx.com/LOP/LOP_BUF_VFX_01.jpg this haunting image of various animals swimming helplessly in the deep ocean]], [[https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lNPdC4lnqW8/UmaK4MN-ckI/AAAAAAAAU6s/nTHdzL2rt-c/s640/pi_280.jpg as well as an image of a lotus flower turning into Pi's mother]].
13	* Pi crying as he's being taken to civilization after washing up on shore, because Richard Parker left before he could say thank you and goodbye.
14	* The book describes in detail that after Pi was rescued, he developed the habit of stocking up on food. The two insurance agents have to bribe him with their snacks to get a coherent story out of him, and they note that his hospital bed is loaded with food as if he's scared of going hungry again. When they all determine that no one knows what really happened, the insurance agents admit the story with the animals is better; to thank them, Pi loads them with the cookies they had given to him as a bribe and told them to eat well for the trip home. The author eats several meals at Pi's house and notes how he is a good cook.
15	* There's also the part in the movie where Pi tells the second version of the story for the insurance people. He just looks so tired and broken from his journey. The entire time he tells the story, he stares straight ahead into space, talking with no emotion, as tears run down his face.
16	** For context, this version had no animals in it, since that's what the insurance people wanted. Instead, Pi describes how his mother floated on bananas, the Buddhist sailor (who gets a cameo in the film) fell and broke his leg, and the French chef had claimed his spot. The chef makes Pi an accomplice by eating their scarce rations while offering him the biscuits and lies to him and his mother that they'll only cut off the sailor's broken leg to save him. When the chef reveals his true intentions, to use the leg as bait, Pi's mother says God is not here for them and it scares Pi. On a day where Pi couldn't hold onto a turtle, his mother made him go on the tiny raft, and the chef beheaded her. He tossed her head to Pi, who let it sink into the current. When Pi returned to the boat, the French Chef didn't put up a fight when Pi picked up a knife, stabbed him in the heart, and fed on his body.
17	** Note how horrifying it is in the books: the agents say, "[[BigOMG My God]]" and not much else.
