* Randall threatens to put his assistant through the shredder. [[Film/{{Fargo}} Steve Buscemi once played a character who was killed by a shredder]].
* The restaurant Harryhausen's is named after Creator/RayHarryhausen, a stop-motion animator and innovator who specialized in monsters. The restaurant's chef, a six-armed octopus monster, is also a reference to Harryhausen's film ''Film/ItCameFromBeneathTheSea'' which features an octopus with only six limbs due to budget reasons.
* Sulley (supposedly) watching Boo get crushed in the garbage compactor is a shot-for-shot {{homage}} to Creator/ChuckJones' "WesternAnimation/FeedTheKitty". Most audience members had the same [[TearJerker unintended reaction]] to its BlackComedy.
* At the end after the Monsters have transitioned from scaring kids to making them laugh, George is seen going into a door with [[Creator/{{Gallagher}} a mallet and a watermelon]].
* When asked if there are any kids in the village, the Snowman quotes the Armour Hot Dogs jingle by responding "Oh, sure. Tough kids, sissy kids, kids who climb on rocks..."
* Doesn't Randall remind you of ''another'' [[WesternAnimation/{{Recess}} Randall]] from Disney? And it's not just because they have the same name; they have a similar posture, personality and squinting eyes. Roz even looks and acts like Miss Finster.
* The opening credits look a ''lot'' like the hand-drawn Disney movies from the '50s and '60s.
* Blink and you'll miss it -- when Monsters Inc. starts [[spoiler:using laughter as a power source]], take a look at the giant display in the doors' room. Did you see the two silhouettes on it? You know, [[JustForFun/TheItchyAndScratchyShow the taller one hitting the other with a hammer]]?
* With the company now collecting laughter instead of screams, Fungus (Randall's former, abused assistant) happily remarks, [[Film/AnimalHouse "Oh boy, this is great!"]], sounding exactly like the formerly abused "Flounder", while putting on a set of Creator/GrouchoMarx nose-glasses.
** Meanwhile, George is seen carrying [[Creator/{{Gallagher}} a watermelon and a sledgehammer]].
* Near the end of the movie, Boo shows Sulley her [[WesternAnimation/ToyStory2 Jessie the Yodelin' Cowgirl doll]]. In the same scene, Nemo has his EarlyBirdCameo.
* Randal is exiled to the same trailer with the ''[[Franchise/ToyStory Pizza Planet]]'' truck parked out front from ''WesternAnimation/ABugsLife''. So ''double'' reference!
* The kid that Mike makes laugh at the end has a [[Ride/{{Disneyland}} Tomorrowland]] poster in his bedroom.
* On the DVD, "Put That Thing Back Where It Came From Or So Help Me" [[WesternAnimation/BambiMeetsGodzilla credits everything to Mike, followed by "Mike Wazowski by Mr. and Mrs. Wazowski."]]
* In the child's room Mike does his comedy routine in near the end, Ride/{{Disneyland}} attraction posters can be seen on the walls.
* In the Boom Comics sequel, there is a very unexpected third member of the trifecta out to destroy Sulley and Mike. Well, How many people expected to see the return of [[WesternAnimation/ToyStory1 SID?!?]]
* In the charades trailer, this is filled with it.
** Mike's first guess from Sulley's charade was ''[[Film/WhenHarryMetSally When Harry Met Sulley]]''. Doubles as an ActorAllusion, given Creator/BillyCrystal's roles in both this film and that one.
** Mike's second guess from Sulley's charade was ''Film/DirtyHarry''.
** Mike's final guess from Sulley's charade was ''Film/TheSoundOfMusic''.
** Mike figured out that Sulley's charade was ''Franchise/HarryPotter'' (the first film was released in the same year and month).
** Sulley figured out that Mike's charade was ''Franchise/StarWars''.
