Final Fantasy XVI is the upcoming sixteenth NumberedSequel in the brain-burstingly popular Franchise/FinalFantasy series developed by Creator/SquareEnix. It is set to be released for the Platform/PlayStation5. A Microsoft Windows release was also announced in the initial trailer, but this has since been retracted. It is produced by Creator/NaokiYoshida and Square-Enix's Creative Business Division 3, of VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIV fame.

On the continent of Valisthea, giant crystal mountains that tower over the land, Mothercrystals, affords the continent's people the blessing of aether, allowing them to live lives of comfort and plenty. With these Mothercrystals came the rise of six realms on Valisthea: the Grand Duchy of Rosaria, the Dhalmekian Republic, the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, the Kingdom of Waloed, the Iron Kingdom, and the Crystalline Dominion. Thanks to the blessing of the crystals, an uneasy peace has long settled on the land.

With the Mothercrystals come Dominants, Elemental Shapeshifters who can transform into powerful beings of destruction, known as Eikons. Treatments of dominants vary across the continent; some treat them as royalty in admiration of their power, others bound them in fear and forced to serve as Human Weapons, and others deem them monstrosities who are to be killed. Anyone born a Dominant, for better or worse, are unable to escape their status.

However, the uneasy peace that has settled on Valisthea is to come to an end, as a mysterious malady known as the Blight threatens to destroy the realms. The stirrings of conflict slowly begin to brew across the continent, each nation with its own agenda to ensure the survival against the Blight.

Meanwhile in the Grand Duchy of Rosaria, Clive Rosfield, the first-born son of Rosaria's ruling archduke, has earned the title of the First Shield of Rosaria, tasked with protecting his younger brother, Joshua Rosfield, the Dominant of the Fire Eikon Phoenix and the heir to the archduke's rule. When the arrival of a second, mysterious Fire Eikon, Ifrit, one bloody night results in a major tragedy and the end to his career as the First Shield, Clive sets out on a dark and dangerous road to revenge, as Valisthea continues to change for the worse.

----
!!"The tropes have shaped our history for long enough."
* Bishonen: As is Final Fantasy tradition, scenes in the Awakening Trailer set during peaceful times show that Clive starts off with bright eyes and a slender, effeminate facial structure. He loses this in his timeskip appearance.
* BloodierAndGorier: The Awakening Trailer shows that the game is much more violent than previous entries, with enemies emitting blood spatter whenever struck.
* BloodSplatteredInnocents: The Awakening Trailer shows a man attacking another man right in front of Joshua, drenching him in his blood.
* DeathGlare: At the end of the Awakening Trailer, the protagonist gives a mean glare to the camera as he declares his intention to kill an unknown "you" if it's the last thing he does.
* DeclarationOfProtection: In the Awakening Trailer, the protagonist declares himself to be Joshua's shield and is sworn to protect him.
* ElementalShapeshifter: The Awakening trailer reveals that eidolons common to the series (Ifrit, Shiva, Titan, etc.) are possessed by people called Dominants who can change into them. The trailer also shows a boy named Joshua involuntarily changing into Phoenix, with Clive yelling "Please, Joshua! Wake up!" while he's transformed.
* FacialMarkings: The Awakening Trailer shows that members of the faction that the protagonist belongs to have identical cross-shaped tattoos on their left cheeks.
* HeroesPreferSwords: The Awakening Trailer shows the protagonist using a sword as his primary melee weapon.
* IllKillYou: The final shot of the Awakening Trailer has the protagonist declare, "I'll kill you... if it's the last thing I do."
* InvoluntaryShapeshifting: The Awakening Trailer at the September 2020 [=PlayStation=] 5 showcase shows Joshua involuntarily transforming into Phoenix.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: The trailer's tagline is "The legacy of the crystals has shaped our history for long enough," referring to the farcical long development cycle of the "New Legend of the Crystals" brand that the series has been following since 2006, when Final Fantasy XIII was announced, and has had an extremely mixed reception.
* MagicKnight: In the Awakening Trailer, the protagonist is shown smoothly transitioning between fire spells and swordplay as he fights a Malboro.
* Protectorate: Joshua, as the protagonist states in the Awakening Trailer that he is his shield.
* RevisitingTheRoots: After XVs modern setting, this game returns back to the medieval fantasy roots. The "Awakening" trailer showcases this with knights on the backs of chocobos, along with large castles and medieval towns as settings. According to Producer Creator/NaokiYoshida, he wanted to create a "straightforward fantasy" with Final Fantasy XVI.
* ShapeshifterShowdown: In the Awakening Trailer, Phoenix and Ifrit challenge each other with a staredown. The game's logo also features Phoenix and Ifrit going at it.
* TeleportSpam: The Awakening Trailer shows the protagonist using short range teleportation as a weapon in combat.
