Murder at Midnight is an online [[PlayByPostGames Play by Post RP]] murder mystery game made by Chernobyl426 on the [[http://www.facepunch.com/ Facepunch Forums]]. The game is based on suspicion and guessing who can be the killer in town.

The players, called the Citizens, must guess and deal with the effects of their choices by their accusations. Each Citizen could be the killer and the crowd must work together to find out who is the Murderer. Every 24 hours in [[RealLife Real Life]], a player gets killed by the killer, then the players must decide who can be the Murderer by a voting process. If the most voted citizen gets executed and he or she wasn't the killer then the game continues, rinse and repeat. If the players all get killed by the Murderer then the Murderer automatically [[TheBadGuyWins wins the game.]] There have been 6 seasons so far. It is currently on hiatus.

!!Murder at Midnight contains examples of:

* AncientConspiracy: A fairly modern one in the 50s. The cult, later forming an organization named Applewhite, has ties with the U.S. Government, overlapping with [[GovernmentConspiracy Government Conspiracy.]]
* AnyoneCanDie: Seeing how this is a Murder game and the killer can kill anyone he/she wants via PM to GM, this is a given.
* AlwaysMurder: Each citizen gets killed by the Murderer at midnight, no one is safe.
* TheAlcoholic: Vanolo starts to drink after events go bad, made even worse after [[spoiler: Abraham dies.]] It's described in detail that he looks like a mess.
* BigBad: The Murderers in general. Particularly [[spoiler: Adrian [=McCaffery=]]] in Season 1, [[spoiler: John Doe, and Jeff Hill]] in Season 2, [[spoiler: Hitler]] in Season 3, [[spoiler: Cameron Knoll]] in Season 4, [[spoiler: Christopher Jenkins]] in Season 5 and [[spoiler: Fredric [=McNarin=]]] in Season 4
* BigBadDuumvirate: Season 2 had two Murderers on the loose instead of one.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: The killers can play out like this pretending to be a nice person so they can get suspicion off their backs.
* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler: Season 2. John Doe is dead, Jeff Hill was apprehended and executed thanks to the Citizens.]] However, a handful of people that investigated the events were victims such as [[spoiler: Abraham Ali and Kurt Green along with a few innocent citizens.]] Season 4 ends on the same note with some survivors, but it's revealed [[spoiler: the killings could have been prevented had Roman voted for Knoll instead of Poinxsquad.]]
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Most of the deaths play out like this.
* CrusadingLawyer: Abraham Ali is this in Season 2. He does his best to help solve the murders and even knew one of the citizens by work experience before the events of Season 2 happened.
* CoolOldGuy: While David Rockefeller hardly has some cool characteristics, he does have the sense to suspect [[spoiler: Adrian for having a deranged comic book outlook on life.]]
* ContinuityNod: Minor in Season 2 where the Citizens mentioned the [[spoiler: [=McCaffery=]]] murder case. Turns to a greater degree when Season 4 comes around where rumors around the U.S. spread about the latest events.
* DeathOfAChild: [[spoiler: Alfie and Rusty Onehundred.]]
* DemBones: Vanolo is known for being a guy with no skin or muscles seen. He states that his skin and muscles simply merged with his skeleton.
* DeepSouth: Kenny Wallace in Season 4, and he's damn proud of it.
* DwindlingParty: The main concept of the game is that if there is only one innocent left then the killer wins. Saying the last victim's death with every detail.
* DownerEnding: [[spoiler: Season 1, Despite the Citizens' efforts, Adrian [=McCaffery=] kills everyone and gets away scot-free.]]
* EveryoneIsASuspect: Potentially anyone could be the killer, even the local good guys trying to solve the murder are this.
* FrameUp: A killer strategy used frequently then later playing a major part of the plot when [[spoiler: Knoll is getting set up by the killer]] in Season 4. [[spoiler: Turns out that was what he was going for the whole time.]]
* GameShow: The premise of Season 4 plays out like the typical show, only it's still a murder spree.
* {{Gorn}}: Lots, lots of [[CruelAndUnusualDeath it in text form]].
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Players aren't obligated to talk to one another and can be playing at their own story.
* HistoricalDomainCharacter: Bill Clinton and Kim Jong-Un in Season 1 and the theme of Season 3.
* IAteWhat: August Green has the fortunate chance to take a bite out of an unknown fried food creation made by someone unknown. [[spoiler: That creation happened to be Alfie.]] Green wasn't expecting that sort of surprise after the reveal, responding with a simple "oh."
* InternalConsistency: The events of Season 1 are mentioned in Season 2 by the Citizens.
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler: Adrian [=McCaffery=] was the killer all along and has killed everyone that partook the scenes, getting away without any arrest or trial.]]
* LighterAndSofter: Season 3 appeared to be this in the beginning.
* TheManBehindTheMan: Applewhite is this to every killer throughout the series.
* NumberTwo: Vanolo is this to Abraham when the first murder occurred, forming a partnership. Both investigate the murders as Abraham talks with the other citizens while Vanolo goes behind the scenes.
* {{Prequel}}: Season 3 takes place before the events of 1 and 2, chronologically making [[spoiler: Hitler]] the first killer in the series.
* PrivateDetective: Vanolo develops into one by the time Season 4 has rolled around due to the reason he was partially responsible for exposing [[spoiler: Jeff Hill's true nature.]]
* RealityTVShowMansion: The main setting of Season 4, it's not really a mansion just a big tall apartment building. It does fit the bill though.
* RedHerring: People who have could have a DarkAndTroubledPast or just a grim background can be this to the players until the killer gets to them first.
* {{Revision}}: Because Bill Clinton didn't die in Season 3, changes were made to make Season 3 a prequel to the previous 2 seasons.
* TheSpeechless: Gordon Freeman (Yes, [[VideoGame/HalfLife that one]]) never speaks whenever he has the chance and is seen to only write notes to people instead of simply talking.
* SignatureStyle: Every murderer so far has one: [[spoiler: Adrian [=McCaffery=]]] uses a diaper to incapacitate victims, either deep frying them or butchering them then hiding the parts. [[spoiler: John Doe]] would kill a victim based on their lifestyle or background. [[spoiler: Jeff Hill]] would leave a note each time he kills while blending with the Citizens. [[spoiler: Cameron Knoll]] would frame himself so he can be declared innocent by most Citizens, killing victims while also framing others to confuse them all.
* SplitPersonality: It's revealed [[spoiler:Adrian [=McCaffery=]]] suffers this before the events have started in Season 1.
* TwoDunIt: [[spoiler: John Doe and Jeff Hill]] in Season 2.
* TheUnderworld: People who are victims usually get sent there after death, it's actually not a bad place according to the victims' reactions.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: The first ones that kick the bucket early in the game, obviously.
* WouldHurtAChild: More like [[spoiler:kill a child, just ask Alfie or Rusty Onehundred.]]
