! Tropes
* CharacterDeath:
** Jack brutally kills Nick during an overdone attempt to stop him from summoning Lucifer.
** Also [[spoiler: Mary]]. Although it's not fully revealed until the next episode.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Jack kills Nick by first breaking his hand in five different places, then by boiling him alive inside his own body.
* CursedItem: Castiel says that the earrings he bribes Anael with carry a curse, although nothing she has to worry about as an angel.
* DistractedByTheLuxury: Anael is willing to help Castiel out, so long as he gives her the cursed Burmese earrings to add to her collection. Even when she tries to leave, the sight of Castiel taking back the earrings prompts her to continue talking.
* EpicHail: Castiel's attempt to contact God. Near the episode's end he finds the amulet Joshua made for that purpose, although there's no apparent effect.
* HiddenDepths: Before she was demoted to become Heaven's button pushier, Anael worked under Joshua and was considered to succeed him as God's intermediary.
* HumanoidAbomination: When Lucifer is summoned from the Empty, he manifests as a pitch black humanoid blob that is constantly reforming itself.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: Nick tries this line on Dean while he's captured in the bunker, since they've both been the vessel for an archangel. Dean isn't having that.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: Jack justifies boiling Nick in his skin because he was a bad person.
* Really700YearsOld: The pawnshop Castiel and Anael search in is run by a seemingly quite young man named Methuselah, who hints that he might actually be the Methuselah who reached 900 odd years in Biblical times.
* SealedEvilInACan: Lucifer is awake but trapped inside the Empty. Nick was able to talk to him by injecting a prophet (Donatello) with angel grace, then tries to perform a blood ritual to bring him back from the void before being stopped by Jack.
* SoProudOfYou: Mary expresses pride for Sam in sparing Nick, something Sam is feeling guilt and shame over.
* SummoningRitual: Nick conducts a blood ritual to raise Lucifer from the Empty and be possessed by him again. It only fails because Mary and Jack appear at the last moment.
* TapOnTheHead: Averted. Nick's hitting Sam in the head results in a serious injury.
* TwoLinesNoWaiting: The A-plot is about Dean, Sam, Jack, and Mary attempting to uncover Nick's plans and save Donatello. The B-plot is about Castiel and Anael searching for a way to contact God.
* UncertainDoom: The episode ends with Jack entering his violent episode in front of Mary, with the screen cutting to black as he says Mary's name. It's uncertain if he does her harm.
