!! This episode contains the following tropes:
----
* AcquiredSituationalNarcissism: Between having won her past two contests in a row and having the MFP praise and fawn over her in the previous episode, May starts to become arrogant, as shown in her somewhat boastful "advice" to Savannah. Her friends and Drew notice this, with the latter advising her to focus on the future instead of what she's won, and the former trying to calm her down when she brags a bit too much in front of Savannah.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Ash once again shows this in this episode. Ash is known for blowing up immediately when people yell at him, and May does this to him twice in a row, yet he stays calm and doesn't get into an argument with her. When May loses to Savannah in the Rubello Contest semi-finals, even though she was acting like a total brat before, Ash still goes outside to talk to and comfort her.
* BothSidesHaveAPoint: May gets upset with Ash for offering advice to Savannah as she pointed out to him that what they do is different because of his role in collecting gym badges and her's for getting ribbons. After witnessing her lose her battle and [[WhatTheHellHero getting scolded for her behavior]] then ran away in shame, Ash, who understands as he was once like her, goes to comfort May as he told her that she was right about their roles as Trainer's are different. However, Ash pointed out to May that they may have different roles as Trainer's but what they do with Pokémon and bonding with them will always be the same.
* BreakTheHaughty: After a few episodes of letting her inflated ego get the best of her, May finally receives one after she loses to Savannah and her Lairon. This is cemented when Nurse Joy, acting as one of the Contest Judges, gives her a WhatTheHellHero speech that causes her to see the error of her ways.
* CharacterDevelopment: For both May and Ash.
** After losing the Rubello Contest and hearing Savannah say that she doesn't feel bad about losing because the ribbon she already has always reminded her how hard her Pokémon came through for her, May realized the reason why she won her two ribbons were because her Pokémon came through for her and vowed to not take them for granted ever again.
** In this particular episode, Ash is shown taking steps toward learning how to remain calm and level-headed, both in and out of Pokémon battles. Despite May's hot-headed and arrogant behavior, Ash manages to refrain from getting into a nasty argument with her. Moreover, he even comforts her after she loses and gets harshly scolded for her behavior. Ash is calm enough to point out to May that while they may have different roles as trainers, what they do with their Pokémon and the bond they share will always be the same.
* DisappointedInYou: Everyone expresses disappointment in May for taking her wins for granted instead of tending to her Pokémon's health, which should ''always'' be her top priority, including May herself.
* DoubleMeaningTitle: As the name of the episode suggests, May loses the contest after Savannah defeats her in the second round. However, it applies to Savannah as well, since she loses to Drew in the final battle.
* {{Fangirl}}: Continuing from the previous episode, the MFP acts as cheerleaders in the stands; they naturally root for Savannah, who's a member of their group, but they also cheer on Drew and May.
* GracefulLoser: [[NiceGirl Unsurprisingly]], Savannah is this when she and Lairon lose to Drew and Masquerain in the final battle of the contest, thanking Lairon for its hard work. Drew, for his part, is shown to be a graceful ''winner'', as, to her appreciation, he comes over and politely thanks her for the great battle.
** Subverted at first for May, as she quickly protests against the judges’ ruling, claiming that she’s not done fighting, earning her a MASSIVE WhatTheHellHero from the judges for caring more about winning then about her Pokémon’s health. After having her JerkassRealization and talking to the others, she plays this straight.
* JerkassRealization: May has this moment after the judges calls her out for not showing any concern for Bulbasaur and for letting the contest go to her head.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After losing the contest and getting scolded for her behavior, May realized that she pushed her Bulbasaur too much and sincerely apologizes to her.
* PetTheDog: At the end of their battle, Drew does thank Savannah for giving him a good match.
* WhatTheHellHero: Nurse Joy and the other judges hits May with this hard as she told her that she is showing no care for her Bulbasaur, which got her to realize her actions.
--> '''Nurse Joy:''' Where's your concern for your Pokémon's health, May?
--> '''Judge #1:''' THAT is a Coordinator's number one priority, ''not'' winning.
--> '''Judge #2:''' By now, you should know that.
