'''''The Audit''''' is the thirteenth episode of ''Series/BrooklynNineNine'''s fourth season.

Crime is at an all time low in Brooklyn and the NYPD is looking to save on money by closing down one of the borough's precincts. Unfortunately for the Nine-Nine, the auditor responsible for reviewing each precinct's performance is none other than Teddy Wells, Amy's ex with whom she acrimoniously broke up.

Intent on keeping the Nine-Nine open and operational, the detectives do everything they can to look good. Jake and Amy are tasked with smoothing things over with Teddy while Holt and Terry go off to try and fix the precinct's incredibly expensive copy machine and Charles and Rosa deal with the precinct's rat infestation.

Also, Gina returns to work after having been struck by a bus the [[Recap/BrooklynNineNineS4E11E12TheFugitive previous episode]].

!!This episode provides examples of:

* AmbiguouslyBrown: Gina claims to have died briefly after the bus crash and met God. When pressed, Gina calls Her "ethnically ambiguous."
* AmusingInjuries: Gina comes back to work wearing a halo. While this is indicative of a severe spinal cord injury, her pain and discomfort are played for laughs.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: Little hints are dropped that Jake and Amy might be too different to work as a couple in the long term but the episode swerves everything back on track by showing that they love that about their relationship.
* BiggerIsBetterInBed: Discussed, when Jake questions why Amy ever dated Teddy, he comes to the conclusion that he has a "big wiener"…and then he spirals.
* BigNo: After Teddy's proposal to Amy in front of his new girlfriend gets shot down:
-->'''Teddy:''' ''[Calmly, to Rebecca]'' Okay, should we hit up the Tenement Museum?\
'''Rachel, Amy and Jake:''' ''[In unison]'' '''''No!'''''
* BilingualBonus: The expensive "Japanese" copier that C.J. bought had "Sushi Roll" in Japanese as its main menu option, which then further breaks down into three options: [[NoodleImplements "Sushi Roll", "Turtle" and "Dance"]].
* BlatantLies: Gina claims she is totally ready to come back to work, and to prove it, she does a dance. Her movements are stiff and jerky, and every one has her howling in pain. Hitchcock is fooled, but... y'know, he's ''[[TooDumbToLive Hitchcock]]''.
* CallBack:
** Terry's exchange year in Tokyo, previously mentioned in "[[Recap/BrooklynNineNineS1E22ChargesAndSpecs Charges and Specs]]", comes into play as he's the only one who can remotely understand the precinct copy machine's instructions.
** Amy and Teddy's bad breakup and Teddy's pedantic appreciation of pilsners, from "[[Recap/BrooklynNineNineS2E09TheRoadTrip The Road Trip]]", play a large part in this episode's events.
* CaughtOnTape: Jake and Amy discover that Teddy kept the voice recorder on his phone on after he left, recording them calling Teddy "the most boring man in America". The two then try to get Teddy's phone and erase the recording before he finds out.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint:
** When Rosa notes that another precinct was shut down for having cockroaches, Jake replies that the Nine-Nine doesn't have roaches because the rats ate them all.
--->'''Rosa:''' That's the problem: we have ''rats''!
** When re-declaring his love for Amy, Teddy responds to the point that he is currently in a relationship with someone else with "[[DamningWithFaintPraise She's fine.]]" His current girlfriend Rachel -- who happens to be standing right there -- is naturally less-than-thrilled with this, prompting Teddy to try and mollify her by pointing out that he'd expected her to wait in the cab while he was making his declaration to Amy.
--->'''Rachel:''' That doesn't make it better!
* DeskSweepOfRage: When [[FlippingTheTable "Flip-a da table"]] doesn't work, Jake simply sweeps everything on the table onto the floor and uses that distraction as an opportunity to dunk Teddy's phone into a glass of orange juice.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Charles tried to preemptively scare off bullies at Nikolaj's preschool by soaking Nikolaj's shoes in wolf urine. Unsurprisingly, he was picked on for ''that'' more than anything else.
* DrinkBasedCharacterization: Teddy loves Pilsners. This episode also reveals that his preferred non-alcoholic beverage is diet ginger-ale. A fitting choice for "The most boring man in America." He actually refuses to drink it during the stakeout because he's worried about a sugar-free, caffeine-free drink getting him "too hyper."
* EdgyBackwardsChairSitting: Detective Jake Peralta sits on a chair backwards close to Teddy, the auditor of their precinct, when he and Amy are on a stakeout. It's done in an attempt to appear friendly and approachable.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Even to Amy Santiago, herself a woman of some rather nerdily esoteric interests and rather pedantic bureaucratic tendencies, Teddy Wells is a boring, overly pedantic, overly bureaucratic nerd with some tediously esoteric interests.
* FlippingTheTable: Jake plans to do this as a distraction so he and Amy could get Teddy's phone. Unfortunately, Jake didn't expect that the table would be bolted to the floor.
* HammyHerald: Holt reads a grandiose introduction for Gina's return from the hospital, clearly written by her. [[SubvertedTrope He realizes that it's ten pages long and decides to skip it.]]
* HereWeGoAgain: Teddy removes himself from the audit, but his replacement, Veronica Hopkins, turns out to be one of Terry's exes, who plans to have the Nine-Nine closed down just to spite him.
* HollywoodLaw: Both Teddy (Amy's ex) and Veronica (Terry's ex) should have immediately recused themselves from evaluating the Nine-Nine; their personal connections to people who work there would make an impartial assessment impossible, and in Veronica's case, she straight-up admits that she'll shut the Nine-Nine down to spite him for their break up.
* HopeSpot: Teddy recuses himself after his girlfriend leaves him for proposing to Amy right in front of her, giving the Nine-Nine hope that the new auditor might give them a better chance at staying open. Said new auditor turns out to be Terry's bitter ex, who immediately tells him that she's shutting the Nine-Nine down.
* HypocriticalHumor: After being rejected (again) by Amy and informed that they were trying to get his phone so they could delete the message calling him boring, Teddy tells her that she and Jake are "the worst people in the world". Jake points out that he just tried to propose marriage to Amy moments before, ''in front her boyfriend and his new girlfriend''. "So potato, potahto."
* IHaveToGoIronMyDog: Teddy, Jake and Amy's reunion for the first time after Jake and Amy "ruined his life and stomped all over his heart" is not the most comfortable of experiences:
-->'''Teddy:''' Jake. Amy. Nice to see you.\
'''Jake:''' Teddy! Nice to see you too. Excited to have you in the field with us.\
'''Teddy:''' Good. [[PassiveAggressiveKombat I just hope I don't]] ''[[PassiveAggressiveKombat bore you]]'' [[PassiveAggressiveKombat to death]].\
'''Jake:''' ''[Forced good cheer]'' Aww, what? Ha-ha. Yeah. What's that? The crime phone is ringing? We have to answer it. Come on, Amy, BRB.\
''[Jake and Amy scurry out of the room as quick as humanly possible]''
* {{Irony}}: The characters spend the episode freaking out about Teddy being the auditor, assuming he would take his resentment over the breakup with Amy out on the precinct, only to learn that Teddy was going to give them an "immaculate" review after all, and even when Jake and Amy's ZanyScheme screws up his life he's still mature enough to merely recuse himself. Unfortunately, ''because'' Teddy recused himself, he's then replaced by ''Terry's'' ex, who is exactly as vindictive as they were worrying Teddy would be.
* KickTheDog: Charles keeps insulting Amy and Terry and accuses them of not being able to keep it in their pants, because their ex-partners ends up auditing the precinct.
* OhCrap:
** On seeing the arrival of the precinct auditor:
--->'''Rosa:''' Isn't that Teddy? Amy's ex-boyfriend?\
'''Amy:''' ''[Wide-eyed and strangled]'' Yep.\
'''Rosa:''' Jake, didn't you break them up?\
'''Jake:''' Yep.\
'''Rosa:''' Amy, didn't you tell him to his face he was the most boring man alive?\
'''Amy:''' Yep.\
'''Rosa:''' This is gonna be awkward.\
'''Amy and Jake:''' ''[In unison]'' [[OverlyLongGag Yep]].\
'''Rosa:''' ''[Resigned]'' We had a good run.
** Terry is rightfully worried when he learns that his ex, Veronica Hopkins, will be replacing Teddy as the auditor, and even more so when she admits to him that she's already decided to shut the Nine-Nine down.
* OppositesAttract: When Teddy challenges Amy over the fact that Jake and her are very different people, Amy counters that not only do she and Jake actually share a lot in common, but that she loves the fact that they are also very different in a lot of ways.
* RefugeInAudacity: In-universe; after his impromptu marriage proposal to Amy is well and truly shot down, Teddy brazenly tries to continue his date to the Tenement Museum with his current girlfriend (who witnessed the whole thing) as if nothing happened. This goes down about as well as you'd expect.
* {{Revenge}}: Played for laughs; Gina's meditation video (recorded by her, naturally) assures her that she will have revenge on "all New York City buses".
* ShipperOnDeck: Charles' shipping of Jake and Amy, yet again, comes across too strongly for his co-workers' comfort.
-->'''Holt:''' The auditor will start by joining Peralta and Santiago on their gang stakeout because-\
'''Charles:''' They're America's dream couple!\
'''Holt:''' You need to calm down. We're in a work place.
* SkewedPriorities: Lampshaded by Rosa when Charles falls through the ceiling onto the copier:
-->'''Terry:''' My copier!\
'''Holt:''' My precinct!\
'''Rosa:''' Charles!
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike: Both Jake and Amy consider William Atherton the second best villain in the ''Franchise/DieHard'' movies[[note]]FWIW Atherton played the snotty SmugSnake investigative reporter Richard Thornberg in the first two films in the franchise[[/note]].
* TakeThat: When Teddy praises San Diego, Jake "feel[s] compelled" to tell him that the city is terrible.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Because Gina took over the break room for her meditation, the rat traps had to be set up at the evidence room, where the rats get into some confiscated cocaine and run rampant.
