Thing is, he didn't tell his family this and by the time his plan is revealed, everyone is too full to completely eat the ice cream and they can't pay for the meal anyway since Cricket replaced all of Bill's money with fake cash, knowing they wouldn't go along with his plan.

The family themselves also go through this shortly afterward; as mad as they are at his plan, they did not expect Cricket to try the challenge by himself and beg him to stop before he hurts himself.
