42016 was a turbulent year for Swiss FolkMetal titans Music/{{Eluveitie}} as the act lost three key members: drummer Merlin Sutter, guitarist Ivo Henzi, and hurdy-gurdist and co-vocalist Anna Murphy, all in one summer. These three musicians then decided to [[StartMyOwn start their own]] [[RockTrio band]], christening it after Anna's solo album, '''Cellar Darling'''.
5
6Dubbing their sound "new wave of folk rock", Cellar Darling pulls back on their old band's heavier sound and channels their energy on storytelling, incorporating ProgressiveRock elements into their music. Their debut ''This Is the Sound'' was released in 2017 to widespread acclaim. ''The Spell'', a DoomMetal-infused concept album, followed two years later.

22
23* AerithAndBob: Ivo, Myth/{{Merlin}}, and Anna.
24* AlbumTitleDrop: ''This is the sound'' repeats before the hooks in "Challenge".
25-->This is the sound, this is the sound,\
26this is the sound of you hitting the ground
27* AndShowItToYou: Wonder whom that heart in the [[http://toptun.net/uploads/posts/2019-01/medium/1548783301_cellar-darling-the-spell-2019.jpg cover]] for ''The Spell'' belongs to...
28* BadassBoast: "Challenge."
29-->Challenge me 'til the early dawn\
30With my hands tied at the back\
31I know I'll bring you down\
32To your knees at last\
33Crying mercy, mercy, have mercy on me
34* BittersweetEnding: ''The Spell'' ends with Death finally listening to the [[DeathSeeker maiden]] after so many attempts of taking her own life just to be with him.
35* BungledSuicide: {{Exaggerated|Trope}} in ''The Spell'' where the maiden tries ''everything'' just to come face to face with Death. Since he has cast the immortality curse on her, nothing can kill her.
36** "Burn": first, she [[SelfImmolation tries to burn the curse out of herself]].
37** "Hang": when fire doesn't work, she tries on the noose and chooses the highest tree to hang it from. [[TheManTheyCouldntHang She remains alive enough to help a bird fly again]].
38** "Sleep" implies poison, ''sweet and substance,'' or an overdose, taking into account the pills in the album artwork for this song.
39** "Insomnia": unable to sleep herself to death, she attempts dying by [[TheInsomniac staying up]] instead.
40** "Freeze": she goes up a mountain and tries to [[SnowMeansDeath die from hypothermia]].
41** "Fall". Surviving the cold, she flings herself off the height hoping the impact would kill her.
42** "Drown". The maiden ends up [[SuicideBySea at sea and tries to drown herself then]].
43** "Love, Part II". After all of the aforementioned methods don't work out, she gets out of the water and just lets herself bleed out all over the place. Only then, finally, does Death listen to her plea and take her with him.
44* ConceptAlbum: ''The Spell'' is a take on the DeathAndTheMaiden trope where the maiden falls in love with Death, and so Death casts {{Immortality}} on her, and she attempts suicide after suicide just to be with him.
45* CosmicPlaything: The man in "Six Days" seems to be this. The maiden in ''The Spell'' as well, in the opener "Pain":
46-->''Born to absorb all the pain in the world\
47like a voodoo doll of mankind,\
48how did I become the eye for an eye,\
49fearful of your unruly wrath?''
50* CoverVersion: Did one of Music/{{Queen}}'s "The Prophet Song", Music/TearsForFears' "Mad World", and "The Cold Song" from Henry Purcell's semi-opera ''Myth/KingArthur, or, The British Worthy''.
51* DeathAndTheMaiden: ''The Spell'' is entirely a twist on this trope.
52* DeathSeeker: The entire concept of ''The Spell'' centers around a maiden who has fallen in love with Death himself [[SpurnedIntoSuicide and thus seeks him every which way]] after Death casts an {{Immortality}} spell on her.
53* DoomMetal: The band has been compared often to Music/TheGathering since their release of songs from ''The Spell''.
54* ElementsalMotifs: Well, they do have one song called "Water" and another called "Fire, Wind, and Earth"...
55* EpicRocking: Quite a few.
56* EyesDoNotBelongThere: The videos for "Insomnia" and "The Spell".
57** FishEyes: Taken ''very'' literally early on in "The Spell".
58* FunWithAcronyms: Even the band lampshaded how ''This Is the Sound'' is abbreviated to TITS.
59* FunWithHomophones: ''One, two, three, for ever...'' ''Five, six, seven, [[SubvertedTrope hate,]] lover...''
60* GratuitousGreek: The words ''hoi polloi'' are half the hook of "The Hermit".
61* HappilyFailedSuicide: "Love, Part II" starts with [[SlashedThroat the maiden letting herself bleed to death]] [[BungledSuicide after all the other attempts to kill herself didn't work out]], then over the course of the song, she finds that maybe hey, life isn't so bad after all. Subverted in that she does go come "Death, Part II".
62* TheHermit: They have a song concerning and titled after this exact trope.
63* LastNoteNightmare: In the form of a ScareChord in "Sleep". "Death, Part II" has a subtler one.
64* LighterAndSofter: Zigzags this when compared to Eluveitie, who has its own lighter and softer work.
65* LyricalColdOpen: "The Spell" and "Freeze".
66* MelismaticVocals: ''The Spell'' displays Anna's capacity for this.
67* MindScrew: The video singles from ''The Spell''.
68* MinisculeRocking: "Water" lasts below two minutes. "Fall" clocks in at one.
69* OneWomanWail: Some of Anna's high-note passages in ''The Spell'' tend to verge into this territory.
70* OneWordTitle: Most songs in ''The Spell'' and several in ''This Is the Sound''.
71* {{Psychopomp}}: Death [[JadedProfessional laments]] about being this for everyone.
72* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Eluveitie's red. Inverted in their social media activity.
73* RepriseMedley: "Death, Part II" in shades. Bonus point for doubling as a LonelyPianoPiece.
74* RockTrio: One guy takes care of all guitar work including bass, leaving the latter to a live member during tour. The other guy plays drums. And then the woman plays hurdy-gurdy (among other instruments) and sings.
75* SiameseTwinSongs: "Freeze" >> "Fall", with little time to fade for the former.
76* SnowMeansDeath:
77** "Avalanche" is about freezing to death in the Alps.
78** "Fire, Wind & Earth": "Now it's winter, I'm dying / Now it's colder, I'm freezing."
79** "Freeze" is about an attempted suicide by hypothermia.
80* SequelSong:
81** "Under the Oak Tree" continues in "High Above These Crowns".
82** "Love" and "Death" both have a part two.
83* SpurnedIntoSuicide: ''The Spell''. [[TheGrimReaper Death]] responds to a maiden's profession of love by casting a spell to make her immortal, hoping she would learn from feeling the eternal pain of what it's like to be him. For most of the album, she keeps on trying to kill herself.
84* TitleOnlyChorus: ''Avalanche, aval-avalanche, aval-aval-avalanche...''
85* TitledAfterTheSong: The band was named after a song Anna's 2013 solo album of the same name.
86* UncommonTime: All over the place in ''The Spell''. "Love, Part II" takes the cake for having its chorus sung in three different ways, too.
87* WhoWantsToLiveForever: Touched upon in "Drown":
88-->Baptized so forcibly to never wither\
89I'm alive\
90Why am I alive?\
91How would it feel to fade away?
92%%* WordSaladLyrics: Several from their first album.
