The two main Japanese religions are UsefulNotes/{{Shinto}} (an animistic religion similar to (neo-)Paganism in the West) and UsefulNotes/{{Buddhism}}. A lot of anime action takes place in Shinto shrines (''jinja'') and Buddhist temples (''tera''). Series with a supernatural bent may be set there for part or all of their action. More light-hearted SliceOfLife series may feature the characters attending a festival such as Hatsumode (New Year's), possibly as part of a FestivalEpisode. Famous shrines and temples are also good destinations for a ClassTrip.

You may or may not meet a ''{{miko}}'' at shrines. Shrines usually will also have ''[[ZigzagPaperTassel shimenawa]]'' present.

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* ''Manga/AhMyGoddess'': After he was expelled from the dorm for bringing a female there, Keiichi and the girls live in an old abandoned temple, which has fallen into disrepair, but was restored by Bell's magic.
* In ''Manga/AsteroidInLove'', Mira, Ao and Ino make a New Year's visit to a shrine together. After they make their prayers, Ao confesses that [[spoiler:her parents are moving away in the spring]].
* ''Manga/AzumangaDaioh'':
* ''Manga/BlueSeed'': The show's main heroine is a {{miko}}.
* ''Anime/DenNohCoil'' features a lot of them; the town the story is set in has a lot of old shrines, and the protagonists are often forced to seek refuge from [[ImplacableMan trigger-happy antivirus program Satchii]] (who is forbidden from entering shrines and private homes) in them.
%%* ''Manga/DestinyOfTheShrineMaiden''
* ''Manga/FushigiYuugi'' (but the temples are Chinese Taoist)
* A very significant alien hunt takes place at a Buddhist temple in ''Manga/{{Gantz}}''.
* In ''Anime/GhostInTheShellStandAloneComplex'' the prime minister visists a buddhist temple to meditate before a highly critical meeting, where she is attacked by a terrorist with a katana.
* ''Manga/{{Gingitsune}}'' centres around a local ''Inari'' shrine. It also visits several other local shrines and their guardians, including a ''jingū-ji'', a small shrine that is part of larger Buddhist temple.
* ''Manga/HauntedJunction'' (Mutsuki is the daughter of a Shinto priestess, Kazumi is the grandson of a Buddhist priest. Haruto, the only one left out, is the son of a ''kirishitan'' (Christian) minister)
* The shrine of Oyashiro-sama in ''VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry'' is the venue for Watanagashi Festival, the major turning point in each story arc. It's also where two of the main characters live, and the social center of Hinamizawa ever since the dam protests brought the residents together for village meetings there.
* ''Manga/{{Inuyasha}}'' often deals with temples, monks and priestesses, as Miroku is a Buddhist priest and Kikyo and Kaede are both mikos. Kagome actually lives in a shrine, and has miko powers, but isn't a miko yet.
%%* ''Manga/KannagiCrazyShrineMaidens'', Nagi is a deity after all.
%%* ''Anime/{{Kamichu}}'': (Where else would a god hang out?)
* In ''Literature/{{Kurenai}}'', the two main protagonists visit a festival at a shrine.
* ''Manga/LuckyStar'' (Sometimes a setting in the story as Kagami and Tsukasa's father is a Shinto priest.)
* The second MonsterOfTheWeek battle in ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha'' takes place at the entrance of one.
* The ClassTrip {{Arc}} of ''Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi'' includes a visit to a famous temple complex in Kyoto, and Konoka's childhood home is yet another temple complex. There's also the Tatsumiya Shrine, which was used by Chao as the setting for the TournamentArc of the Mahora Festival.
%%* ''Anime/MyHime'':
* Chapter 3 of ''Manga/MarchComesInLikeALion'' features Matsumoto praying at a Shinto shrine for victory in his match against Rei. Loudly.
* ''Manga/MarmaladeBoy'': Everyone attends Hatsumode, and Miki visits a shrine in Hiroshima when Meiko runs off to be with Na-chan.
* The manga of ''Manga/MermaidMelodyPichiPichiPitch''. Rina is a miko at a shrine to a mermaid, making one wonder about the head priest...
* Natsume of ''Manga/NatsumesBookOfFriends'' learned to escape to temples when chased by youkai long before the story's start and several of the supernatural characters live at shrines.
* Worth noting: ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' [[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment is notable]] for containing almost ''no'' references to Japan's native religion or the most popular imported one, with only two exceptions -- a Mystical108 reference that is quickly passed over, and a hilltop Shinto shrine that is almost demolished in an early episode.
* ''Manga/NyanKoi!'', it's where all the fun with the cats started.
* In the ''Manga/OuranHighSchoolHostClub'' manga the boys, Haruhi, and their new friend Mei all visit a temple for New Year's.
* ''Franchise/SailorMoon'': Rei/Sailor Mars is a ''{{miko}}'' at a Shinto shrine owned by her grandfather, and everyone goes to Hatsumode.
%%* ''Manga/ShrineOfTheMorningMist''
* ''Anime/TenchiMuyo'': Yosho is the head priest of his own shrine and trains Tenchi there. Also, in ''Shin Tenchi Muyo'' Tenchi trains under another Shinto priest)
* In ''Manga/{{Yotsuba}}'', we get both. For the shrines, Jumbo takes Yotsuba and Ena cicada-catching at a local shrine, because of all the trees on the grounds make it a good hunting ground, and the girls later help pull a ''omikoshi'' (portable shrine) through the streets during a [[FestivalEpisode festival]] there. For the temples, Yotsuba's father uses a temple guardian statue to scare her after catching her lying one too many times.
* Shrines show up frequently in ''Manga/XxxHolic'', and let's not get started on the shop where Yuuki lives...
* Touko form ''Touko no Jikenbo'' is a young priestess that struggles to keep the family shrine solvent.
* The girls from ''Anime/{{Tamayura}}'' like to hang out at some well-known temples in [[RealPlaceBackground their hometown of Takehara]], most notably Saihō-ji.
* Shrines and temples are seen and visited often in ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf''.
* Series taking place in the historic town of Kamakura naturally feature a lot of these:
** ''Manga/SweetBlueFlowers''
** ''Manga/ElfenLied''
** ''Manga/TwinSpica'', mostly through flashbacks.
** ''Anime/UtaKata''
* The main characters of ''Manga/KamisamaKiss'' live in a Shinto Shrine. Its upkeep and shrine duties make up several plot points.
* In ''Manga/DeathNote'', Sayu complains bitterly when she's told to run an errand for her mother instead of attending ''hatsumode''.
** Later, a large temple is built (or in the process of being built) to Kira. [[StopWorshippingMe Light complains that it's too soon to be doing that]].
* [[OnlyKnownByTheirNickname Oshou]], [[DaChief The Captain's]] uncle in ''Manga/YoureUnderArrest'', is an old Shinto priest (and a retired cop — Kachou's actually kinda inherited his precinct) who bombs around [[TokyoIsTheCenterOfTheUniverse Sumida]] in an [[CoolCar E.R.A. Mini Turbo]] and sometimes gives his nephew an advice, or simply shares a quiet moment with him on his shrine's veranda.
* In ''Manga/CardCaptorSakura'', these become a plot point several times. Mostly, the Tsukimine Shrine, where Sakura's teacher works as a {{Miko}} part-time.
* In ''Manga/{{Noragami}}'', these naturally feature as well. Yato crashes at someone else's shrine, and hopes to have an especially opulent one of his own someday.
* In episode 9 of ''Manga/TheIceGuyAndHisCoolFemaleColleague'', the cast (minus Komori) visits a shrine to celebrate the New Year (hatsumode festival). While there, they find out that Komori's family owns the shrine they're visiting and the reason she couldn't participate in these plans is due to having to help out as a [[{{Miko}} miko]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''Fanfic/TalesOfTheUndiscoveredSwords'' series is set in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka, and as such one entry has its main characters crash-land into the Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha. The shrine in the fics is headed by the saniwa's father.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* Being a {{Miko}}, Maori's stage in ''VideoGame/ArcanaHeart'' is naturally the Shrine her family takes care of.
* The Hakurei and, later, Moriya shrines in ''Franchise/TouhouProject''. The Hakurei shrine is of particular importance: not only is it the home of one of the protagonists, but it also acts as a doorway into and out of Gensokyo. Reimu's so lazy about maintaining it that it's basically lost all of its holiness, though.
** And as of Undefined Fantastic Object, we can add Byakuren's Buddhist temple to the mix.
* On that note, ''VideoGame/LenEn'' features the Senri Shrine. Again, two of the protagonists live there, and the head priest's job is (amongst other things) maintaining the Mugenri Barrier. Interestingly, the shrine includes a laboratory for [[TeenGenius Tsubakura]] to do research in.
** No temples have shown up ''yet'', but, given that [[WordOfGod JynX]] has said that Devanagara is predominantly Buddhist, and that Tenkai's spellcards contain references to Buddhist themes, we can assume one can show up soon.
* ''Franchise/{{Persona}}'':
** The Alaya Shrine plays a major role in the backstory of ''VideoGame/Persona2: Innocent Sin''; it's where [[spoiler:the main cast all played together as children]], as well as the site of [[spoiler:the eponymous "innocent sin" that drives Joker's animosity against the party]].
** The local shrine is an important location in ''VideoGame/Persona3''. You can boost your relationships and Knowledge there, it's where the New Year's Festival is held, and two Social Links hang out at its attached playground- Maiko, a grade schooler, and Akinari, a 19-year-old who has less than a year to live. It's also where the dog Koromaru, one of your party members, used to live.
** ''VideoGame/Persona4'' features a run-down shrine that seems to be abandoned except for a surprisingly money-hungry fox who has you fulfill the prayers of people who visit in exchange for discounts on healing in the TV World. [[spoiler: If you complete all the tasks you're given, the shrine gets lavishly redecorated, and turns out to be the spot where the fox [[YourTomcatIsPregnant raises her kits.]]]] You can use the offertory box to boost your relationships with your Social Links, catch bugs under a tree, or trade fish for stones with a ghost at the shrine.
** ''VideoGame/Persona5'' has the Meiji Shrine, which lets you boost your relationships if you make an offering.
* In ''Videogame/AgeOfEmpiresIII'' the Japanese civilization can build Shrines, which provide their population, and produces resources. They also can build the Toshogu Shrine as their Wonder building.
* ''VideoGame/StigmatizedProperty'': There's a small shrine in one of the corners of the lot the apartment building's on.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Visual Novels]]
* ''VisualNovel/DaughterForDessert'': [[spoiler:In the “good” Lily epilogue, the protagonist and Lily wake up near (or maybe inside) one of these. The country isn’t determined (and it’s unlikely to be Japan, since the ethnically Korean Lily would probably be unwelcome there), but the general idea still holds.]]
* ''VisualNovel/NekoMiko'' has Nekofuku Shrine, where [[CatGirl Ayame and Kaede]] are priestesses. It's become rather run-down due to neglect, and Ayame seems to want to spruce it up.
* ''VisualNovel/PhoenixWrightAceAttorneyTrialsAndTribulations'': At one point Phoenix and Maya visit Hazakura temple. Maya wants to train her powers as a spirit medium, while Phoenix wants to investigate one of the {{miko}}s, who seem to have connection to his past. Given the series they're in, someone gets murdered when they visit.
* ''VisualNovel/SpiritHunterNG'':
** In the Urashima case, the Urashima Woman was killed in front of the shrine at Urashima Lake. Akira gets a glimpse of the shrine thanks to his [[{{Psychometry}} Bloodmetry]], which helps narrow down the investigation. While the Urashima Woman attacks those who enter the shrine, she can't go too deeply into it herself, as the centerpiece wards off spirits.
** In Kubitarou's case, Kubitarou haunts an area where a sacred cedar tree used to rest. In remembrance of the tree, a mini shrine is built, and investigating it provides some clues as to how to open the nearby well.

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* WesternAnimation/TheBeatles, touring Japan, seek shelter from a storm in a temple where a group of natives mistake them as their sacred ancestors. What gives them away as not being their ancestors is the the boys don't have queues in their hair. From the episode "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby."
