[[caption-width-right:320:Thankfully they were forgotten... Or were they?[[note]]Not really. Pogs were introduced in Spain, Mexico and South America as ''Tazos'' in the 90s and new ones continue to be released and be somewhat popular to this day. [[/note]]]]

->''"Remember Series/{{Alf}}? He's back! In Pog form!"''
-->-- '''Milhouse van Houten''', ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons''

Do you know what Pogs are? Do you care? Does anybody who knows care?

Throughout human history, people have become obsessed over the darndest things, especially in the consumer-driven economy that sprung up during the 1950s. Pet rocks, pins, breakdancing, various child stars, OneHitWonder bands, Silly Bandz, fidget spinners, and (of course) pogs were all once[[note]]1995 mostly for the latter, if the ''pog machine'' toy is any indication[[/note]] insanely popular, but like most fads [[FlashInThePanFad they faded away]], and these days most of us look back on all the hooplah and laugh.

Thus, comedies can generate laughs simply by making an off-hand reference to a fad that was once wildly popular, but is now considered ridiculous. Sometimes this takes the form of a pointed comparison between a current fad, or a thinly-veiled parody of it, and one that used to be popular but has since been CondemnedByHistory, with the implication that the current fad is headed the same way.

If the show is ''about'' Remembering Pogs (humorously or seriously), we have ILoveTheExties. If there's a character who just can't leave his pogs behind, he's DiscoDan. If the joke includes a younger character not recognizing pogs, it's BeforeMyTime. When the use of a widely popular fad ends up dating a work to a specific time period, it's UnintentionalPeriodPiece. When the fad in question later manages to stand the test of time, that's ItWillNeverCatchOn. When the fad in question progressively [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-Zags]] this trope as time goes on, that's PopularityPolynomial.

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* An early episode of the ''Anime/PokemonTheOriginalSeries'' dub includes a Macarena reference. [[http://dogasu.bulbagarden.net/ Dogasu]] runs a site dedicated to the changes made in the dub, and even he had to [[http://dogasu.bulbagarden.net/comparisons/kanto/ep006.html snigger a bit]] at that.
* ''Anime/{{FLCL}}'': The reference to Crystal Pepsi in the dub was an attempt at a CulturalTranslation of a reference to a similar fad soft drink sold in Japan, Cherio.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/SunnySeries'': [[PeriodPiece Being set]] in The70s, the books mention a lot of fads and popular shows of the era. Sunny gets a [[SeventiesHair fashionable haircut]] to resemble Dorothy Hamill's iconic style, the Wedge (but doesn't like it), she weaves pot holders on a simple loom for presents, and she gets her brother Dale a Pet Rock as a Christmas gift (which he blows off at first, but later uses as [[IHaveThisFriend an explanation of his feelings at]] being sent to MilitarySchool due to his [[DrugsAreBad substance abuse]]). When her parents decide to refurbish their basement, her dad has her bring her old dolls up to her room to store until it's done, which include a [[https://www.modbarbies.com/mod-barbies-blog/1974-dusty-and-skye-dolls-by-kenner Dusty doll]], a {{doll|s}} who was shaped "realistically." When debate team starts, one of the first debates involves her defending ''Bottle Caps'' candy, which were introduced in the decade. Her parents throw a fondue party, which she has to assist at.

[[folder:Comic Strips]]
* A ''ComicStrip/{{Zits}}'' strip has Jeremy and Pierce reacting this way to Walt's description of tiddlywinks.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* ''Film/TheDeathOfDickLong'': Contributing to the film's darkly ironic atmosphere, the soundtrack consists of nothing but PostGrunge songs from the late 90s and early Aughts that have aged poorly. The main characters are {{Dreadful Musician}}s who specialize in these songs. The credits music is the infamous Music/{{Nickelback}} single "How You Remind Me".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* The last episode of ''Series/BeakmansWorld'' actually does this to a then-current sensation:
-->'''Beakman''': You wrench 'em, I'll drench 'em, let's Macarena!\
'''Everyone in the entire friggin world, including the makers of the song''': ''LET'S NOT!''
* An episode of ''Series/{{Chuck}}'' season 3 had the then jobless Jeffrey and Lester suddenly talk about Music/AceOfBase.
-->'''Lester''': You remember Ace of Base?
-->'''Jeffrey''': Always.
* [[Series/TheDailyShow Jon Stewart]] uses a slightly more serious version of the trope in a lot of his standup. He mocks the tendency of politicians to pander to the LowestCommonDenominator by saying they're "Just like you. I'm a common man!"
-->"Really? You watch eight hours of television a ''day''? You thought the Macarena was ''fun''?"
* An episode of ''Series/MurphyBrown'' had Murphy and Kay realizing they had met before during the Bicentennial at a Starland Vocal Band concert (which consists solely of them replaying their OneHitWonder "Afternoon Delight" over and over), of whom Kay was the ''manager''. Murphy purchases a Pet Rock to "bash [her] blind date's head in", talks to Kay about how miserable both are, and Kay "accidentally" gives Murphy the key to backstage for her to sabotage the event.
* In an ''Series/{{SCTV}}'' sketch, Creator/WoodyAllen was trying to do a film project with Creator/BobHope, but found his outlook too old-fashioned - Hope was just as put out by Allen's morose personality and tells him "Your mood ring is turning black." Allen replies "My ''mood ring'', what is this, 1968?"
* An episode of ''Series/TeenAngel'' had the titular character going back in time to try to prevent his death. When his past self demands proof he's from the future, he says "I know this may be a little hard to believe...but the Macarena is just a phase.", followed by his past self bemoaning his huge investment in "Planet Macarena" stock (which he later plans to sell and [[ComicallyMissingThePoint invest in Tony Danza t-shirts instead]]).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Magazines]]
* The ''Magazine/{{MAD}}'' parody of Pokémon introduced [[ParodyNames Hokéycon]] as the latest "flavor of the week" fad destined to rot in closets everywhere. One later panel had a fanboy who boasts that Hokéycon is "a phenomenon whose popularity will never, ever fade" being approached by another desperate to trade him any number of Toys/BeanieBabies, [[Franchise/TheSmurfs Smurfs]], Franchise/PowerRangers or Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles in exchange for a single Hokéycon card. (HilariousInHindsight, as all of these are ''still being made'' in some form, even though they're not as wildly popular as they once were--as is Pokémon itself, which is the most profitable franchise in the word. [[labelnote:For the record]] While none of these franchises save Pokémon are the media giants they used to be, they're all far from dead, with most of them still going strong well into the 2010s.[[/labelnote]])
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Music]]
* An increasing theme of Music/{{Eminem}}'s later music is that he begins to use deliberately out-of-date pop culture references, shouting-out things from his own youth to mock himself for being a WhiteDwarfStarlet. For example, 2020's "Marsh" contains a reference to Invisibl Skratch Piklz and ''Series/{{ALF}}'', as well as to Music/EdSheeran.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Podcasts]]
* ''Podcast/BinaryBreak'' begins in the 90s, so natural this is all over the place. Penny has a canonically infinite amount in his vest pockets.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* In ''VideoGame/CoffeeTalk Episode 2: Hibiscus and Butterfly'', Lucas gives you his contact card and a fidget spinner with his number on it, and he requests you to give either of them to Riona on her next visit. You can give the fidget spinner to [[spoiler:Rachel]] instead on her first visit, but she'll remark that it's "so 2017" and return it to you. [[spoiler:Giving it to Gala, on the other hand, will have him use it to entertain the hospital kids, but they'll think that it's passé.]] Lucas also makes a status update wondering if the fidget spinner is "that lame now".
* The commentary in ''VideoGame/GettingOverItWithBennettFoddy'' {{discusse|dTrope}}s the trope in regards to PropRecycling. It's noted how people expected games to eventually ''all'' be created from premade assets in the same way this game is, but that never came to pass because, once an asset is recognized as able to be reused, it becomes "trash".
* In ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoSanAndreas'', the radio host of K-DST, Tommy "The Nightmare" Smith, mentions "Whatever happened to Love Fist?" at one point of his show. Love Fist was a fictional band from [[VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoViceCity Vice City]] that was [[BannedInChina banned in many countries]]. In 1992 (when San Andreas takes place), however, they're all but forgotten (which may also be a reference to how hair metal fell out of favor in the early 1990s).
* ''VideoGame/{{Hiveswap}}'': The first half of Act 1 takes place on Earth in 1994. Joey's bedroom and the upstairs hallway has some toys and posters for video games from the late 80's and early 90's, some of which are direct references such as the Puppy Surprise toy where she finds the key that opens the portal in the attic, or [[BlandNameProduct parodies]] (likely due to licensing issues as previews show they were originally going to also be direct references) such as the poster for "[[VideoGame/EarthBound1994 Second Mom]]". Actual Pogs are also included; Joey finds some in the flashlight in place of a battery, apparently having been put there by her brother Jude. He asks her to hold onto the Pogs for him, which she begrudgingly agrees to. If you use them on the trash in the kitchen, Joey will be tempted to throw them away, and it unlocks an achievement called "Where they belong".
* ''VideoGame/HonkaiImpact3rd''[='s=] "St. Freya Fiesta" event featured an interactive area where chibi versions of the characters could chat and pick up and exchange prizes. One of the possible commands was to have your chibi do the Macarena.
* ''VideoGame/KingdomOfLoathing'' has multiple versions of a "pet rock" familiar (all of which do nothing), an entire player class dedicated to disco and, of course, [[http://kol.coldfront.net/thekolwiki/index.php/Pack_of_pogs pogs.]]
* In-universe in ''VideoGame/NEOTheWorldEndsWithYou'': in [[VideoGame/TheWorldEndsWithYou the previous game,]] Tin Pin Slammer was such a big deal that it was the hobby of focus in Another Day, but here everyone seems to have moved on with the exception of a few kids... and Neku and Beat, who decide to play a little of it to pass the time while this game's Another Day episode focuses on the younger protagonists and Shibuyapalooza.
* ''VideoGame/Wasteland2'' was made in 2014, [[SequelGap 26 years]] after the original ''VideoGame/{{Wasteland}}'', [[ZeerustCanon but still set in a world where the apocalypse happened in the 1990s.]] It playfully reminds the player of this by having bits of 1980s pop culture show up as ShopFodder: Rubik's cubes, Teddy Ruxpin dolls, and snap bracelets are just some of the things you'll find lying around.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* Literally used in ''Webcomic/PunchAnPie'' when Angela tries to explain pogs to Justin.
* Summed up succinctly in [[http://www.harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=98 this]] ''Webcomic/HarkAVagrant'' comic.
-->'''NOSTALGIA COMICS'''\
''(random image of part of the cast of'' Series/{{Blossom}}'', edited solely to have Creator/JoeyLawrence's character saying '''"WHOA"''')''\
'''I DON'T EVEN NEED TO DO ANYTHING CLEVER'''
* Literally discussed in [[http://dieselsweeties.com/archive.php?s=1563 this]] ''Webcomic/DieselSweeties'' comic when Metal Steve mistakes Charles saying "blog" for "pog" and continues to talk about pogs.
* If you look closely at young Tedd's shirt in panel 4 of [[http://www.egscomics.com/?date=2002-05-23 this]] ''Webcomic/ElGoonishShive'' comic, you can see it says "Pogs Rule".
* ''Webcomics/TerminalLance'' does it in [[http://terminallance.com/2014/02/07/terminal-lance-307-why-staff-ncos-love-challenge-coins/ strip 307]] when a First Sargent is shown with them.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Original]]
* The premise of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOSUEFqszK8 this]] ''Website/CollegeHumor'' video.
* From ''Website/TheOnion'': [[http://www.theonion.com/video/internet-archaeologists-find-ruins-of-friendster-c,14389/ "Internet Archaeologists Find Ruins Of 'Friendster' Civilization"]] [[DontExplainTheJoke For those unfamiliar with Friendster]], the site was, in fact, still active long after it had been largely eclipsed, first by Website/MySpace, then Website/{{Facebook}} until it was killed in 2011.
* Lore Sjoberg in his ''The Book of Ratings, [[http://www.bookofratings.com/collectibles.html Collectibles, Part I]]''
-->Have a little ''nineties flashback'', scarecrow! I actually had a temp job designing pogs in 1994. What kind? Why, I believe they are now rotting landfill pogs, just like the rest.
* [[WebVideo/TheSpoonyExperiment Spoony]] once referenced this trope. He mentioned Music/VanillaIce as something that was [[CondemnedByHistory incredibly popular for a hilariously short period of time, and is now seen as thoroughly embarrassing by even the most die hard of fans]]. The context for the remark was that he predicted ''Literature/TheTwilightSaga'' would be going the same way.
* In LetsPlay/TheStrawhatNO's LetsPlay of ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess'', after Thorn gets lost in the Lakebed Temple, [=BigTUnit=] passes the time by asking the others, "Anyone remember pogs? Because I sure don't."
* From the Podcast/{{Rifftrax}} of ''Film/WillyWonkaAndTheChocolateFactory'', after Slugworth signals Charlie with a thumbs up.
-->'''Creator/NeilPatrickHarris''': A stiff "thumbs up" shows the kids you're "down" with the "music" and the "scene" and the "Pogs".
* [[http://pogressiveruin.com Pogressive Ruin,]] a site dedicated to posting especially ridiculous pogs from a giant collection sold to a comic book shop.
* WebVideo/StuartAshen will occasionally refer to artificial 'collectible' fads of yesteryear such as Toys/BeanieBabies and Pogs when reminding us of his ire toward things in the ilk of Toys/FunkoPop vinyl figures.
* ''WebAnimation/HomestarRunner'' released an episode of Marizpan's Answering Machine on AprilFoolsDay of 2016, which had a massive backlog of messages from [[ScheduleSlip the seven or so years]] since the previous Answering Machine had been released. One RunningGag from the cartoon had Homestar leaving messages gushing over such now-dated fads as planking, Jeremy Lin, and the Ouya, swearing each time [[ThisIsGoingToBeHuge they're going to be around forever]].
* WebVideo/TheAngryVideoGameNerd referenced this trope in his review of Tiger Electronic Games; likening them to a fad like Pogs.
** On a similar note, WebVideo/YouKnowWhatsBullshit had an episode about how much of a fad pogs were. He even thought he should have named the episode "You Know What WAS Bullshit?".
* Jasper's interest in pogs and light-up shoes in ''WebAnimation/CampCamp'' turns out to be relevant; his dated references foreshadow that [[spoiler:he's the ghost of a kid who died in the nineties]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' does this often:
** From the episode "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS7E4BartSellsHisSoul Bart Sells His Soul]]": "Remember Series/{{ALF}}? He's back. In Pog form."
** "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS6E22RoundSpringfield 'Round Springfield]]" features The Ultimate Pog, which bears the likeness of Creator/SteveAllen.
*** Ironically, both of the above references came from episodes that originally aired in 1995 [[UnintentionalPeriodPiece when the pog craze was actually in full swing]], with the jokes being meant to mock ALF and Steve Allen as outdated fads clinging to relevance by piggybacking on modern trends. This of course, makes them extra HilariousInHindsight.
** In "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS5E1HomersBarbershopQuartet Homer's Barbershop Quartet]]", Homer wins a Grammy thanks to inspiration from Marge's purchase of a then-trendy "Baby on Board" sign for the family car. ("Now people will stop intentionally ramming our car!")
** In "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS2E13HomerVsLisaAndThe8thCommandment Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment]]", Barney asks Moe why the bar doesn't have cable TV. He replies, "It was that, or the mechanical bull. ''(camera pans back to show the cobweb-encrusted bull)'' I made my choice, and I stand by it."
** In "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS8E8HurricaneNeddy Hurricane Neddy]]", Marge finds a Rubik's Cube in the basement during the storm, and the family decides to try to solve it; they have no more luck than most people did when it was popular, Marge eventually getting frustrated, and yelling, "Now I remember why I threw this down here in the first place!" before tossing it.
** "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS9E8LisaTheSkeptic Lisa the Skeptic]]" reveals that Homer has an entire closet filled with such kitschy, outdated fad items collected over the years, including a large supply of Billy Beer.
--->'''Homer:''' ''(drinks the beer)'' Ah, we elected the [[UsefulNotes/JimmyCarter wrong Carter.]]
** A similar gag is used in "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS3E22TheOttoShow The Otto Show]]", where Homer finds a can in his old concert jacket.
** A memorable Homerism from "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS10E23ThirtyMinutesOverTokyo Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo]]":
--->'''Homer:''' The Internet? Is that thing still around?
* Peter finds his old pet rock in an episode of ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy''. He remembers when they had to housebreak it after it peed on the floor, including rubbing its "nose" in the puddle.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Arthur}}'': "[[Recap/ArthurS3E7ArthurRidesTheBandwagonDadsDessertDilemma Arthur rides the Bandwagon]]" dealt with fads, Arthur's grandmother gave him his father's old pet rock to substitute for a Woogle, the new toy everyone has. It barely lasts one scene before Arthur dumps it. He winds up creating a new fad by just popping a bottle cap. The kids instantly drop the new toys to get in on it and by the end of the episode, Woogles are in the bargain bin.
* ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'' focused an episode on Kyle's difficulty in getting in with the recent [[{{Phonymon}} Chinpokomon]] trend. Every time he ran to the toy store to get the latest part of the fad, he would return to find his friends had already moved onto the next new item.
* The "Dethcomedy" episode of ''WesternAnimation/{{Metalocalypse}}'' had a comedian whose entire 'routine' was him standing on stage saying "Anybody here remember (insert old-school reference here)?" The guys {{lampshade|Hanging}}d it, but then admitted they found him funny.
* An episode of ''WesternAnimation/TheVentureBrothers'' had Dr. Orpheus imprison the souls of a pair of annoying rednecks in Homies figures. Homies, for anyone who missed them, were collectible figures of stereotypical Latino "thug" types sold in the capsule machines[[note]]Capsule machines, for anyone who missed them, involved putting anywhere from a penny (in olden times) to four quarters in a slot, then turning a handle to release a toy/gumball/other prize into a little receiving bay[[/note]] in front of grocery stores in the early 2000s.
-->'''Orpheus:''' That's a "home-boy". But be careful! It houses the souls of ''[[NoIndoorVoice TWO FOUL-MOUTHED REDNECKS!]]''
** This trope is also used to show how hilariously out-of-date Hank and Dean's concept of pop culture is. Hank in particular makes frequent remarks and references to culture that a boy his age shouldn't even know about. Pogs themselves are brought up on one occasion (before their father confiscates them, claiming that they somehow promote gambling).
*** Doctor Venture's comment about pogs is based around [[AluminumChristmasTrees a real complaint parents had]]. Typically, when playing pogs, kids would bet them, with the winner of a game getting the pogs they knock face up. As such, [[TheNewRockAndRoll parents complained that the game was promoting gambling]].
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Recess}}'' dealt with this a few times, ranging from an addictive puzzle-type game, to having a stock market-style system based around stickers to quoting lines from a popular movie.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheOwlHouse'': In "Really Small Problems", there is a brief gag where Eda shows off a fidget spinner at her shop and asks if anyone wants to buy "an outdated human reference". You ''know'' they're a forgotten fad when this joke is made only 3 years after they became popular.
* ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb'': Doofenshmirtz was once hula hooping and invited Perry the Platypus to join. However, Perry's hula hoop was a trap to capture him.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheAmazingWorldOfGumball'', it turns out in "The Void" that all the things in Elmore considered "bad ideas" are [[RetGone erased from existence by the universe itself.]] This is shown to include such things as pogo balls, disco, [[{{Music/CrazyFrog}} Crazy Frog]], mullets, [[BreadEggsMilkSquick and people.]] In short, no one remembers pogs in Elmore because they ''[[LaserGuidedAmnesia can't!]]''
* ''WesternAnimation/BojackHorseman'' has the backgrounds of flashbacks ('80s, '90s, and 2007) ''filled'' with references to the time period in question, generally making them as on-the-nose and dated as possible.
* This was PlayedForDrama in the ''WesternAnimation/KingOfTheHill'' episode "Reborn to Be Wild", where Bobby becomes a born-again Christian thanks to the influence of a [[TotallyRadical skateboarding ministry.]] Hank opposes Bobby's conversion not because he disagrees with it, but because he fears that Bobby is going about it the wrong way, and that treating something as important as his faith in such a manner will have it turn out to be just another passing fad, like his old Toys/{{Tamagotchi}}, Toys/BeanieBabies, and [[Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles Ninja Turtles]] costume, all collecting dust in the garage next to Hank's old Members Only jacket.
* ''WesternAnimation/GravityFalls'': In "[[Recap/GravityFallsS1E5TheInconveniencing The Inconveniencing]]", Dipper and Mabel join Wendy and her friends in raiding an abandoned convenience store that shut down in the nineties. Dipper finds an old newspaper with a headline that reads "Cheese Crust Pizza Declared Delicious".
* In one episode of ''WesternAnimation/CodeMonkeys'' the Game-A-Vision crew are searching for ways to compete with the [[BlandNameProduct Lettuce Patch Dolls]] that are taking away their market share (Larrity says that [[ThisIsGoingToBeHuge there's no way those dolls are ever going away]]). Dave attempts to pitch his idea for Pogs (Jerry's reaction is "Not Pogs again, Dave"). We hear him say "Now, you see they're these stupid cardboard circles, right..." before going to commercial.
