Being a princess isn't always what it's cracked up to be. Apparently, things get even worse when your older brother is better than you in everything. Tired of remaining in another's shadow, Lorelei learns this lesson the hard way when she undertakes an epic adventure to win her father's affection--with disastrous results. It soon occurs to her that the outside world is entirely different from what she has been used to, and she is obliged to learn its workings in order to survive.

Violently thrust into hostile and alien surroundings, Lorelei needs to subvert its rules to her advantage. She is given the chance to do so when an accidental misunderstanding earns her the respect of the local juveniles, placing her in a position of power within their circles. Suddenly, everything seems to have changed for the better. Surely it can't hurt to maintain this illusion for a little while longer? Bending a few morals along the way isn't too high of a price to pay, given the alternatives. What could possibly go wrong?

Too bad she hasn't counted on how attractive the first taste of power can be. Or how difficult it is to hold on to it. Or how often it is that people only recognize the importance of something after that thing has been well and truly lost.

----
!! This book provides examples of:
%%* AChildShallLeadThem: And how.
%%* TheAce: Lorelei's brother Llane, not to mention her cousin Malachi. In spades.
* AdultsAreUseless: No one over the age of 14 seems capable of making important decisions or getting anything done. Somewhat TruthInFiction since the adults tend to become mired in larger issues of state security and politics. It takes a year-long absence of his daughter before Arulaine even starts to take matters seriously, and even more time to spur himself to do something about it. Then again, he WAS battling depression at the time, so...
%%* AffectionateParody: Of both epic fantasy and dystopian fiction.
%%* AllForNothing:
* AxeCrazy: What most people consider Sheriden to be. Understandable, since he has a habit of scavenging from recently-dead corpses and talking to his tail. [[spoiler:He's not]]
%%* BadassNormal: Mostly Llane. To a lesser extent; Lorelei, Malachi, Pendarynn and pretty much everyone else under 18.
%%* BigDamnHeroes: Llane has one in his rescue of Lorelei. So does Pendarynn much later on.
%%* ChildhoodFriends: Lorelei, Altayir and Malachi.
* ChildrenAreSpecial: Cubs appear more capable at the racial trait of song-based magic than adults.
* ChildrenForcedToKill: Part of the bear empire's TrainingFromHell designed to produce ChildSoldiers.
* ChildSoldiers: Winterhold's troops include children.
%%* ComingOfAgeStory: For Lorelei and Malachi.
%%* DeathByChildbirth: Anvira
* Doorstopper: 800+ pages of rhyming couplets make this a contender.
* EnfantTerrible: Lorelei.
%%* EvilFormerFriend: Morwenna. Also
%%* FatherIWantToMarryMyBrother: Or foster-brother. Or cousin. Either way.
%%* FaceHeelTurn:
* ForbiddenFriendship: Between Pendarynn and Lorelei, whose parents hate each other. May overlap with StarCrossedLovers.
%%* FriendshipTrinket: Pendarynn's fang. Also a
%%* GoMadFromTheIsolation: This happened to Sheriden a long time ago.
%%* GoodGirlGoneBad:
%%* HeelFaceTurn: Pendarynn and Tabaqui both have one.
%%* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: Between and
* InadequateInheritor: What Lorelei believes she is.
* IncestSubtext: Happens occasionally. What else should you expect from yiff foxes?
%%* InterspeciesFriendship: Lorelei and Pendarynn
* ImaginaryFriend: Rix to Sheriden.
* ImpossibleTask: Lorelei's quest. [[spoiler:Break into the heart of TheEmpire and steal back the remains of her brother. Which the EvilOverlord is wearing as a fur coat. Nothing to it, right?]]
%%* ItWasWithYouAllAlong: The entire premise.
%%* KidsAreCruel: Carnessian and Flint.
%%* KidHero: Lorelei and Malachi
* KidSidekick: Malachi and Tabaqui to Lorelei. Also to Sheriden--
* KnightTemplarParent: Arulaine is perfectly willing to risk the future of his kingdom to save his daughter. Everything he does is for her own good. Too bad he doesn't know how to express it.
* LittleStowaway: Lorelei stows away with some traders to begin her adventures.
%%* LonerTurnedFriend: Sheriden
* LotusEaterMachine: Tabaqui encounters one shortly after

* PrecociousCrush: Malachi develops feelings for Marissa eventually.

%%* PuppyLove: Lorelei and Pendarynn.
%%* RatMen: The Skaven.
* RedBaron: The Harlot Queen; The Hidden One
%%* TheRunaway: Lorelei
* Satire: Of its genre. Protagonist is a heroine instead of a hero, the strong/capable female turns out to be not so strong/capable in ways clear to the others, love triangles don't work out to the heroine's advantage, and there is no happily-ever-after.
%%* SelfMadeOrphan:
%%* SenselessSacrifice:
* SiblingYinYang: Malachi and Lorelei. Well, foster-siblings anyway.
%%* SnarkyNonHumanSidekick: Rix
* SoProudOfYou: Lorelei learns this from her father eventually.

%%* WouldHurtAChild: Just about everyone, really.
* YouCanTurnBack: Lorelei gives Tabaqui a chance to turn back. She is given her own chance to turn back later on. Both of them should have accepted, really.
* YouShouldHaveDiedInstead: Arulaine's implied attitude to Lorelei, after his wife and son's deaths.
