!Tropes for the film:
* AlliterativeName:
** Jesse James.
** Sam Starr.
* CastingGag: The main selling point was that it had four sets of actor brothers to play four sets of historical outlaw brothers. James & Stacy Keach played Jesse & Frank James. David, Keith, & Robert Carradine played Cole, Jim, & Bob Younger. Randy & Dennis Quaid played Clell and Ed Miller. Christopher & Nicholas Guest played Charlie & Bob Ford. At least on real Younger brother was changed into a cousin in the film, possibly to not ruin the pattern.
* IHaveAFamily: The teller at the Minnesota bank says this to keep Clell from killing him (because he can't open the safe, which is on a time lock). It doesn't work.
* ItAmusedMe:
-->'''Belle Starr''': [''To Cole and Sam Starr''] "You're both crazy, but you do keep me amused. I am having a '''real''' good time."
* KnifeFight: There's one between two Bowie knives, and at the lady's request no less. Notable for having the fighters "tied" together by a chew rather than their wrists.
* SuperWindowJump: The outlaw gang are trapped in the town's main street by a posse, so they escape by [[InvulnerableHorses riding their horses through the windows]] of a store, then out another set of windows at the back. [[ContrivedCoincidence Why a store would also have]] large plate glass windows (which would have been very expensive to make and transport) on the side facing ''away'' from the main street is not mentioned.
* {{Tagline}}: "They were nine men from four families. They rode together from Missouri to Minnesota, and from Texas to Tennessee. This is their story...and it's as close to the truth as legends can ever be".
