Ranma is a little OOC but it's believable and I never felt bothered by it. The story itself is a fine example of that oft-used Evangelion fanfic archetype of "replace the Shinji character with someone who at least meets the minimum standards for a decent human being" and Ranma does more than admirably. The writing in the meat of this story is quite engaging and I found it hard to stop reading. The problem is the 10% frame story of the Ranma cast watching Eva tapes, which serves as bookends for each chapter. It's fine in the first few chapters but it very quickly devolves into characters becoming mouthpieces for the author to pontificate about problems she finds with the storytelling in canon Ranma. Some points I agree with, some I disagree with, but regardless, it distracted from the main story and felt extremely OOC and not believably so. The final chapter takes place exclusively in this frame story and is a complete deus ex machina/OOC train wreck. I like this story for the great writing in the main Evangelion section and would highly recommend doing the following to improve your reading experience: 1) Skip all the frame story bits. You would only miss the Ranma cast chastising each other for being terrible people all around. 2) Skip the last chapter. The story ends reasonably well on chapter 17 and it would save you from the bad aftertaste of reading the last chapter. To be completely honest, chapters 16-17 are considerably weaker than the previous chapters as well but are more integral to the plot and can't be skipped as easily. I will also not fault the author for not being able to write good fight scenes, as she admits. Hopefully these two suggestions improve your enjoyment of this otherwise really good fic. |
