3In 1983, Glenn D. Daniels launched [[https://cmt.com Country Music Television (CMT)]], a television channel targeting fans of CountryMusic. Opryland USA bought the network in 1991, adding it to its roster alongside the similar TNN. By 1993, CMT went international, with European and Canadian versions launched. Viacom bought both networks in 2000, with TNN eventually transformed into Creator/SpikeTV.

5In the beginning, CMT's programming consisting mainly of country music videos and related programming. Much like {{Creator/MTV}}, albeit to a lesser degree, the network has also [[NetworkDecay changed its focus]] in the years since. While many of the initial non-music programs were logical choices (reruns of ''Series/HeeHaw'' and ''Series/TheDukesOfHazzard'', plus a country-themed revival of ''The Singing Bee''), the network's programming would move further and further away from its country roots over the years (''Series/ExtremeMakeoverHomeEdition'', ''Series/AreYouSmarterThanA5thGrader'', ''Series/MarriedWithChildren'', etc.).

7Nonetheless, CMT continues to show videos often enough[[note]](As of 2020, CMT is one of the few non-video-oriented networks owned by Creator/ViacomCBS that still airs video blocks, the other one being [[Creator/{{BET}} BET Her]].)[[/note]] that they maintain a fan-voted video countdown show and their own country music awards show. CMT also maintains a sister channel, CMT Music (originally known as Creator/VH1 Country and CMT Pure Country), which is primarily dedicated to country music videos. Rival network Great American Country (now known as Great American Family) was also more video-focused.
