-->Voiced by: Creator/NaokoWatanabe (OVA), Creator/MikiNagasawa (TV series)
-----------
* AdaptationalJerkass: The OVA makes her needlessly cruel to humans in her mission, whereas the manga had established her as only mildly cold, and most of it to mask some inner insecurities.
* AdaptationalWimp: Perhaps because it focuses on her more vulnerable and human side, the TV series downplays heavily her manipulative skills and array of vampiric powers, and instead has her angsting a lot, using only her fire powers in combat, and needing rescue by Larva more often. However, she does not need anymore to spell the name of the Shinma in order to seal them as in the OVA, although this might be more of a thing of the series's dynamics than her own skillset.
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: Her personality varies greatly between continuities. In the OVA, Miyu is portrayed as a twisted, whimsical trickster who presents herself in a grandiloquent manner and enjoys toying with people. In stark contrast, the TV series shows her as serious, collected and soft-spoken, as well as much more caring and kind-hearted. Her manga personality, finally, could be considered an intermediate step between both, albeit featuring a certain amount of sensitivity and self-doubt that is not present in any.
%%* AnimalsHateHer: Ruri the bird reacts strongly to Miyu's presence.
* AntiHero: She fights for a goal that will make the world safer for humans and other lifeforms, but the events in her life have left her unable to care very much for people.
* BreathWeapon: In the OVA, she shuts off Raen's WillOTheWisp lights by blowing at them.
* BrokenBird: In all continuities, her family life and adolescence were destroyed in the process of becoming a vampire.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: The TV series features the most heroic and warm version of Miyu by a substantial margin, but the first episodes have her doing a couple misdeeds typical of her OVA version that might look weird in hindsight, like murdering the harmless Machiyama (by some illusory powers she never uses again in the series, furthermore).
* CherryBlossoms: Some of her powers in the OVA involve this, although she never uses it as actively as Yui.
* CripplingOverspecialization: While very nimble, most of Miyu's offensive abilities are psychic in nature, forcing her to trust Larva to handle the physical aspect of the fighting. If her powers fail to work and he's not around, she can only resort to CombatParkour to wait for a chance.
* DarkMagicalGirl: Toyed with. She's not only the main character, but she's the one who seeks out friendship instead, at least in some versions.
* {{Dhampyr}}: Daughter of a vampire and a human.
* EveryoneHasStandards: In episode 1, she becomes uncharacteristically pissed off and delivers a harsh TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to the episode's protagonist for his shallow reasoning for wanting to become a vampire, disapproving of his judgement of his fellow humans as boring and pathetic for going about their everyday lives while he is able to live his life burden-free and doesn't appreciate it. He pisses her so much that she throws his words about being bored back at him after he dies, since he'll no longer have to worry about boredom in death.
* FieryStoic: A fire user who can be either laid-back (OVA) or stoic (anime).
* FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire: Strictly speaking, she only feeds on people who would benefit to some degree from the LotusEaterMachine induced by her bites. The only time she is suspected of being drinking blood at random, she is compared to an animal.
* GoodIsNotNice: She does what she can, and occasionally feels regret for those she can't help, but in the end her job is to banish Shinma and absolutely not to protect or save people. She's not above using mortals as bait or even killing them to get to Shinma, if necessary. The OVA makes her almost a NominalHero.
* GuileHero: The girl is frighteningly manipulative and good at playing people, especially in the OVA and in spin offs like ''Vampire Yui'' and ''Vampire Princess''. Very, '''very''' few people are able to outsmart her.
* TheFatalist: A side effect of recovering from her life trauma. She believes the only way to escape fate is death.
* HealingFactor: Although she rarely needs it, her vampire body gives her one. The most egregious time was when she is stabbed through the torso in the TV series and survives to tell it.
* HunterOfHisOwnKind: Miyu and her mother are as much Shinmas as the enemies they hunt.
* ImprobableHairstyle: She has an elaborate hairstyle in the shape of a single odango bun with a long lock free.
* KissOfTheVampire: Notably because she has no visible fangs. The act itself is usually hidden.
* IconicOutfit: Her white short kimono.
%%* IJustWantToBeNormal: Until she accepted her task.
* IKnowYourTrueName: In the OVA, she must first learn the Shinma's name before sealing them.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Extremely elegant and aloof as she uses her ruby-red flames.
* LimitedWardrobe: In the anime series, we only see her in school uniform or her white hunting uniform. In the OVA series, however, she has a different kimono every episode along with another school uniform.
* MindOverMatter: She has telekinetic powers, which she employs to levitate around and use objects as weapons. Barely uses them in the TV series, though.
* MusicalAssassin: In the anime series, she plays a small flute when appearing to her enemies. It is only to announce herself, though.
* OlderThanTheyLook: JustifiedTrope, since she was granted eternal youth by the Shinma so she could take all the time she needed in catching the runaways.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: She is a rather powerful and atypical kind, as she has several of the classical vampire powers yet apparently none of their usual weaknesses (and given that her mother didn't have them either, it cannot be attributed to Miyu being a {{Dhampyr}}): she doesn't have even fangs or an uncontrollable need for blood, and seems physically indistinguishable from a regular human girl. Additionally, in something even less common in vampire lore, she has the ability to leave her victims in perpetual dream trances.
* PlayingWithFire: Her signature attacks. She uses them in all continuities to finish off opponents, and in the TV series, to do most of her fighting.
* PowerFloats: She can levitate, and is constantly doing so in the OVA.
* SpeakIllOfTheDead: In episode 1, she mocks the protagonist of the episode for saying he was bored of living among humans after he dies, saying, "At least you're not bored anymore." To be fair, she did warn him not to try to follow her, so his stubbornness and stupidity in trying to chase her off the roof caused his death. [[AssholeVictim Not to mention he was an unrepentant jerkass]], so he kind of deserved it.
* SquishyWizard: While not too squishy given she has superhuman agility and somewhat of a HealingFactor, she is not a hand-to-hand fighter, and instead fights using her dimensional and pyrokinetic magic.
* TheStoic: Common to all portrayals it is that she doesn't get flustered easily, or at least not noticeably.
%%* SugarAndIcePersonality: In the TV series.
%%* SupernaturalGoldEyes: As a vampire.
* TenderTears: In the manga, she's much more emotional than in other media. JustifiedTrope, as some parts depict Miyu's early days as a Shinma hunter so she still was a NaiveNewcomer to the whole deal.
* UncannyValleyGirl: Her calm, somewhat ethereal demeanor is present in all versions of her character.
* VegetarianVampire: Downplayed. Miyu is picky about her victims, does not drink that much quantity (this might be because she is pretty petite) and the side effect of her bites sometimes helps people, but she still drinks blood and has no compunctions about it. Her mother wanted her to become a more proper example, but she rejected it.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Her bond with Larva is sometimes romantic and sometimes not in continuities, but she is always fiercely protective of him. She won't even stand for people so much as insulting him.
-->'''Miyu''': I won't return you to the Darkness. '''You, I will burn to ashes!'''
* WhatHaveIBecome: She says this word by word after [[spoiler: biting and accidentally killing one of her classmates]] in the fourth OVA.

[[folder:Larva]]
!!Larva
-->Voiced by: Creator/KanetoShiozawa (OVA and CD dramas), Creator/ShinichiroMiki (TV series)
* AbledInTheAdaptation: Inverted. The OVA states his face and voice were sealed away, so he cannot speak nor remove his mask. In the TV series and original manga, he can do both, although still rarely does.
* AbsurdlySharpClaws: His main weapons are his red long fingernails, which can cut even through energy attacks.
* AdaptationalBadass: In the TV series, he has a large scythe aside from his claws and Miyu's fire. In turn, however, he actively dislikes using the latter.
%%* BadassInDistress: When captured by Lemures in the third OVA.
%%* BattleButler
* BecomingTheMask: Became Miyu's servant after losing to her, but developed empathy towards her plight.
* BigDamnHeroes: His trademark (and almost only) way to appear is in a DynamicEntry to help Miyu.
* BodyguardCrush: Depending on the continuity, his bond with Miyu is sometimes portrayed as romantic in nature.
* FacialMarkings: Mask example. Tear drop shaped ones on his cheeks.
%%* FemmeFatalons: A rare ''male'' example.
* PlayingWithFire: He shares Miyu's fire powers due to his servant bond with her, but doesn't like to use it because it brings him bad memories.
* PowerFloats: Although not as much as Miyu, among other things because he moves little and has a cloth that obscures his body, he can basically levitate.
* TheQuietOne: In the TV series and manga, where it is by choice that he doesn't talk much.
%%* MaskPower
%%* TallDarkAndHandsome
* TheVoiceless: In the OVA, his voice was sealed upon having the mask placed on his face.
* YourSizeMayVary: His height is difficult to measure due to his long robe and levitating powers, but it varies between continuities, and even scenes, judging by whenever he stands behind Miyu. He is sometimes just relatively tall by western standards, while other times he genuinely looks like a 8 ft giant.
[[/folder]]

!!Characters from several continuities

[[folder:Miyu's parents]]
!!Miyu's parents
-->Voiced by: Masako Ikeda (OVA, mother), Mayumi Shou (TV series, mother), Kiyonobu Suzuki (OVA, father)
* AdaptationExpansion: The plot point that [[spoiler:they are sealed away by the Japanese Shinma]] first appeared in the OVA, which aired after the manga's first volume. In the latter, it was implied [[spoiler:she was fighting Shinma entirely by her own will]] instead.
* TheAgeless: This is what leads to the whole crisis in the OVA in the first place, even though they're Shinma themselves, their particular bloodline is fully mortal and Miyu's mom is getting on years so Miyu should have been groomed to be the next Guardian.
* BigFancyHouse: In the original OVA, they owed a very pretty traditional Japanese home. It was located atop of a hill near [[spoiler: Nara... the place where the fourth OVA takes place.]]
%%* BrokenBird: Miyu's mother
* EmptyShell: Miyu's dad, since [[spoiler: Miyu's mom drank his blood before marrying him, which she regrets due to the terrible effects.]] It's actually so bad that [[spoiler: when the Shinma came to claim Miyu as the Guardian and both his wife and daughter ran away, he simply stood there quietly, allowing the Shinma to capture him.]]
* MamaBear: Miyu's mother tried to save her from becoming the Guardian by force. [[spoiler: By either considering to kill her (manga) or giving her ''her own blood'' (OVA)]]. It didn't work, obviously.
* ParentsInDistress: [[spoiler: They're now hostages of the Japanese Shinma, frozen in time and in an eternal sleep in an alternate dimension between the Darkness and Earth. Miyu has to catch all the runaways to get them free.]]
* TheVoiceless: Miyu's dad, with the OVA being the only exception.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Shiina]]
!!Shiina
-->Voiced by: Creator/MikaKanai
* AntiMagic: His eye can nullify enemy spells.
* CanonImmigrant: He was an addition to the TV series, likely to capitalize on the MonsSeries fad of the nineties. However, after the series aired, he "appeared" in the manga in the form of a key chain with his exact shape, with Miyu commenting it looked like a plushie named Shiina she used to have. He finally ended up making proper appearances as himself.
* {{Familiar}}: He's an animal-like Shinma who acts as Miyu's companion.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: It's shown that he has a form of offensive AntiMagic spell, but he only uses it once in the TV series, even though it would have been pretty useful on several other occasions.
* MadEye: His right eye, which gives him scrying powers, is huge, bloodshot and usually hidden behind one of his bunny-like ears.
* MeaningfulName: His name is written with kanji (死無) meaning "undead" or "deathless".
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Looks ''almost'' like a cuddly pink rabbit, if he doesn't reveal his right eye, and speaks with a childlike voice.
* {{Seers}}: More specifically, if you look into his sort-of evil eye, you can see stuff that is normally invisible.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Reiha and Matsukaze]]
!!Reiha and Matsukaze
-->Voiced by: Creator/MegumiOgata (TV series)
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: Matsukaze. In the TV series, he is a traditional Japanese doll which can only levitate, while in the manga he looks just like a human child and can move naturally.
* AdaptationOriginConnection: Inverted. In the anime series, she was the daughter of a yuki-onna and a human guardian of Miyu's bloodline, and knew her back when they were children. In the manga, she is a ruler of a boundary of the Shinma world who only meets Miyu due to a fleeing subject of her.
* AffablyEvil: Reiha is soft-spoken, calm, always has a cold smile on her lips... and is a frightening opponent.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: While neither Miyu nor Reiha acknowledges it explicitly, the latter has proved to be able to consistently overpower the former.
%%* AnIcePerson: She is a yuki-onna.
%%* AntiHero: Bordering nominal hero.
* CanonImmigrant: She appeared first in the TV series and later in the manga.
* CreepyDoll: Matsukaze, who seems to be a mouthpiece for Reiha's hate for Miyu.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Reiha is even more aloof than Miyu and mercilessly attacks others using ice.
* FacialMarkings: A sign on her forehead, which appeared after her powers woke up.
* GoodIsNotNice: Reiha fights the runaway Shinmas and all, but she's ''not'' concerned with the bystanders at all and openly antagonizes Miyu.
* HarmlessFreezing: Averted. It ''looks'' harmless, but it's just as deadly.
* LosingYourHead: [[spoiler:She calmly picks up her own head after being decapitated and swears revenge as she returns to the Darkness.]]
* TheRival: To Miyu, complete with thematically opposite powers.
* SquishyWizard: Even more than Miyu, as she remains mostly stationary when fighting and her ice magic seems to be stronger than Miyu's fire powers (or are at least used more liberally).
%%* UncannyValleyGirl
* TheUnfavorite: [[spoiler: Reiha hates Miyu to death because her father, one of her collaborators, died protecting Miyu and called out to her in his last breath instead of recalling his own daughter.]]
%%* WinterRoyalLady: In the manga.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Lemures]]
!!Lemures
-->Voiced by: Creator/YujiMitsuya (OVA)
* AdaptationDyeJob: Was an EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette in the manga, then became a dark-skinned blond in the OVA.
* AdaptedOut: From the TV series, where he was replaced by a similar character named Garline for unknown reasons.
%%* GigglingVillain
%%* ManipulativeBastard
%%* SmugSnake
* StarterVillain: He was the great villain of the 1989 manga volume, just before the series was adapted to OVA.
* WhyDontYouJustShootHim: Tells this to [[spoiler: Larva]] in the manga, in regards to Miyu.
%%* {{Yandere}}: For [[HoYay Larva]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Lilith]]
!!Lilith
-->Voiced by: Creator/YuriShiratori (TV series)
* AdaptationOriginConnection: In the anime series, she was merely a mook of Garline. In her incorporation to the manga, she became a relative to Larva, specifically a cousin to him and sister to Carua.
* CanonImmigrant: She appeared first in the TV series as an ally to Garline, and later showed up in the manga, where she worked with Carua and Lemnia.
* FilleFatale: Looks like a highschooler, yet behaves like her [[Myth/{{Lilith}} namesake]].
* MusicalAssassin: In the TV series, she plays an ocarina which can cause pain to her victims.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ranka]]
!!Ranka
-->Voiced by: Mayumi Shou (OVA)
* AdaptationalHeroism: She becomes an ally to Miyu in the manga, which never happens in the OVA where she's first introduced.
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler: What she does to her victims, via transforming them into mannequins.]]
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler: OVA. She pretended to like Kei to make him her prey. But then, [[InloveWithTheMark she fell for him for real.]]]]
* CanonImmigrant: She appeared first in the OVA and later in the manga, though never in the TV series.
%%* CreepyDoll: Her true form.
%%* DarkActionGirl
%%* EnemyMine: With Miyu, in the ''Shin'' manga.
%%* LadyOfWar
%%* RazorFloss: One of her favorite attacks
%%* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Very pretty, pale and dark-haired -- and ''so incredibly creepy''.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In the OVA, she doesn't survive the events of her first encounter with Miyu, while in the manga she does.
%%* StarCrossedLovers: [[spoiler: She and Kei. But they find a way to get together.]]
%%* UncannyValleyGirl

!!Characters from the OVA

[[folder:Himiko Se]]
!!Himiko Se
-->Voiced by: Creator/MamiKoyama
* AudienceSurrogate: We witness the story through her eyes.
* CanonForeigner: Created especially for the OVA's, though Creator/MamiKoyama is also the narrator of the CD dramas.
%%* TheCynic: Implied to be due to everything she has seen
%%* FunctionalMagic: She uses UsefulNotes/{{Onmyodo}} spells.
* InspectorJavert: She wants to hunt down Miyu, believing her to be a threat to humanity. She's not exactly wrong, but the thing is that humanity would be even more screwed without Miyu.
* PluckyGirl: While she might look sour and jaded, she has not given up in her life.
-->''My happiness isn't so trivial that it can be found in a dream!''
* UnlimitedWardrobe: Changes her clothes in every OVA.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Miyahito]]
!!Miyahito
-->Voiced by: Creator/KatsumiSuzuki
%%* BrokenBird: A male example.
%%* BreakTheCutie
* DistractedFromDeath: [[spoiler: He left Ryoko near the bridge she had to cross to go home. The moment he turned to walk away, Ra-en/Baku killed her.]]
%%* FailureKnight
%%* EmptyShell: [[spoiler: After receiving Miyu's KissOfTheVampire.]]
* ILetGwenStacyDie: [[spoiler: His girlfriend Ryoko was Ra-en's first victim.]]
[[/folder]]

!!Aiko
* BigFancyHouse: Where she lives.
* ConvenientComa: Is in this state in the OVA.
* CuteMute: [[spoiler: When she "wakes up", she doesn't say a single word.]]
* CreepyChild: She is seen as one of these. [[spoiler: When she wakes up, she's among the cutest and most pitiful examples of this.]]
* DealWithTheDevil: [[spoiler: She let Ra-en possess her body and use her for his plans, in exchange for creating an illusion in which her beloved parents are still alive.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler: Her parents's deaths. Since they died after giving her their blood so she'd survive, poor Aiko blamed herself and called herself a vampire, biting the neck of her doll in the orphanage she was placed in much to the horror of the other kids. Then Ra-En came in...]]

[[folder:Aiko's parents]]
!!Aiko's parents
* CreepyMonotone: They speak like this. [[NightmareFuel Brrrrrr!]]
* DeadAllAlong:[[spoiler: They actually died in a car crash a while before the OAV's take place. The ones that Himiko met are illusions summoned by Ra-en as a part of his deal with Aiko.]]
%%* GoodParents. [[spoiler: Or so they seem. They ''were'' this to a T when alive, see the trope below to know more.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: They knew that their injuries from the accident would eventually kill them, so they begged their treating doctor to let them donate their own blood (of a pretty rare type) to their beloved daughter Aiko so she'd survive. He couldn't refuse such a request since they had no blood of said type left in the hospital ''and'' there was no time to ask for donors: in the end Aiko survived, but Mom and Dad died.]]

[[folder:Kei Yuzuki]]
!!Kei Yuzuki
-->Voiced by: Creator/RyoHorikawa
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: [[spoiler:On Ranka, with a ForcefulKiss.]]
* BrokenAce: Except for being at least a bit BookDumb, he acts completely perfect at school. He's polite, handsome, popular... As well as selfish, indifferent, and disenchanted with life.
* BookDumb: What their parents believe, as they berate him because his grades are not as good as his siblings' and his mother thinks he might even need extracurricular classes. It is unclear how much truth there is in this, however, as his actual grades are not revealed; considering that his siblings seem to be overachievers, he might not be that bad himself if not compared to them. Also, considering he looks seriously depressed, it might even be due to a lack of motivation rather than talent.
* ChickMagnet: Possesses a practically unearthly beauty, and even Himiko can't help but comment on how hot he is.
* NightmareFetishist: [[spoiler: He falls in love with an UncannyValleyGirl, that's all.]]
* PlayingAgainstType: Quite the jump in regards to [[Anime/DragonBallZ Vegeta]] or [[Manga/SaintSeiya Shun]], huh?
* PrincelyYoungMan: The IceKing type, with some traits of the Gentleman.
* StarCrossedLovers: [[spoiler: With Ranka. [[SubvertedTrope They find a way to stay together]].]]
* StepfordSmiler: He hides his boredom with life in general, his feelings of inferiority towards his more academically-succesful siblings and his apathy towards his EducationMama's constant pressure under a polite, soft-spoken, beautiful mask.

* SecretKeeper: Knows what her best friend Miyu is [[spoiler: because she saw her bite one of their classmates and accidentally kill her by draining her of blood.]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Contrary to what it looked like, [[spoiler: no, Miyu's mother didn't kill her for blood]], but Akiko never appears again either after that.

* InnocentlyInsensitive: At one point wistfully comments that she would love to remain a child forever in front of Miyu, unaware that the latter has been a child forever, and been lonely as a result. [[spoiler: By the end of the series, she does get to remain a child forever... by having her soul stuck in a dream of a perpetual summer afternoon.]]
%%* OffWithHisHead: [[spoiler: How Larva kills her.]]
