!Grenadiers in general
* DefogOfWar: Grenadiers can rain fire on enemies outside of their FOV if an ally has line of sight to the target. By working in tandem with a Scout for a spotter, they can carpet bomb the enemy from anywhere across field.
* GlassCannon: Like Snipers, Grenadiers are capable of dealing massive damage either to infantry or vehicles, depending on their weapon. They are also very fragile with sub-par HP, as their blast suits don't offer much resistance to gunfire.
* ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy: Their aim, when controlled by the AI during intercept fire, is horrendous. They'll rarely hit anything that isn't stationary and can still miss ''even then''. Plus, their reload speed and rate of fire is slow - a stark contrast to [[TheComputerIsACheatingBastard the reload speed]] and [[AlwaysAccurateAttack accuracy]] of enemy controlled Grenadiers.
* MightyGlacier: Grenadiers have very low AP and movement speed to match. Don't expect them to be able to cover much distance without assistance from the Cactus, or a Command unit like Minerva[[note]]Minerva is one of three scouts who gains the Double Movement potential, which allows her to literally cover over twice as much ground as the Cactus[[/note]].
* NonIndicativeName: Contrary to what their class name might suggest, Grenadiers aren't infantry equipped with hand grenades to flush out enemies from their fortifications. Instead, they are technically one-man mortar crews.
* WeaksauceWeakness:
** Whether friendly or Imperial, a Grenadier has to be set up to fire. If a Grenadier is knocked down by an explosive, they will need to waste a CP to set themselves up again to attack. Certain strategies only call for enemy Grenadiers to be knocked off their footing by a grenade to enable safe passage for Scouts and other squishy ground troops. They also have a minimum range, and cannot fire if the enemy is too close.
** Grenadiers need an unobstructed arc between them and their targets to hit, meaning they can be messed up by obstacles like trees, ice crystals, and roofs, as the grenade shells have quite large hitboxes, which the projected aiming arc doesn't account for.

[[folder:Jascha Alatt]]
!!Jascha Alatt
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc4_jascha_headshot.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Shunzou Miyasaka (JP)
->'''Rank:''' Private
->'''Age:''' 32
->'''Likes:''' Aulard Abington, Hanna Carroll, Aoife
----
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: During his Squad Story he's able to accurately predict where an enemy shell will land and where it was safe to stand as a result.
* CanNotSpitItOut: Even after he realizes his crush on Aoife he still struggles to work up the nerve to tell her until the end of their Squad Story.
* TheComicallySerious: Watching him trying to first explain Aoife his feelings as if they were a physics problem is just ''precious''.
* GoodWithNumbers: Justified, in that he used to be a mathematics professor.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: When he finally manages to confess his feelings for Aoife and learns [[spoiler: she's engaged]], he takes it relatively gracefully and wishes her the best.
* MessyHair: That verges into being straight up EinsteinHair.
* NoJustNoReaction: How he reacts when Riley suggests [[spoiler:he and Hanna should try dating instead. Both are not amused. [[BrickJoke They end up married after the war.]]]]
* OppositesAttract: [[spoiler:Logical, reserved Jascha ends up marrying HotBlooded Hanna. He's more surprised than anybody.]]
* TheSpock: Very serious and logical.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: He has to have it spelled out to him before he accepts what that funny feeling he has in the presence of Aoife is, and is still quite a bit incredulous afterwards.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: You'd be forgiven for not realizing that the grey-haired, scruffy professor was actually only 32.

[[folder:Connor Doherty]]
!!Connor Doherty
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc4_connor_headshot_1.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Youhei Azakami (JP), Christian La Monte (EN)
->'''Rank:''' Private
->'''Age:''' 30
->'''Likes:''' Jester Mooney, Teresa Leach
----
* CantTakeCriticism: He does not take negative opinions of his books very well at all. When his AP falls below half, Connor's Defense degrades.
-->'''Connor:''' [upon triggering Unpopular Author] "They just don't get my work..."
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: More interested in what makes a good story that what's a good idea. His wife actually kicked him out of the house because of his writing obsession. While Teresa was trying to scare Jester straight by chasing Jester around threatening to ''remove his organs'', Connor seemed to be playing along with Teresa. After Teresa reveals her true intention, Connor is ''disappointed'' that Teresa isn't going to forcibly remove Jester's organs.
* EccentricArtist: His sole reason for enlisting is to gain firsthand experience for the war novel he's working on. Which is lampshaded by his personnel file, several of his unit activation quotes, and his personal Potentials:
-->'''Connor''': ''(if selected on field map)'' "Inspiration strikes!"
-->'''Connor''': ''(triggering Seeking Inspiration)'' "I NEED inspiration!"
* HenpeckedHusband: If his Squad Story and his own character profile are any indication, he is apparently this to his wife, possibly due to his questionable writing career. Nevertheless, his wife supports him in his writing.
* ItsForABook: The crux of his character.
* LeftHanging: Played for laughs. If he dies in battle, his last words are:
-->'''Connor''': ''(languidly)'' "So this is it...? No CharacterDevelopment? No closure...?" ''(dies)''
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall:
** Tells Jester: "You're no protagonist, but you could make an interesting supporting character".
** Also done during his aforementioned death quote, in which he laments dying without any development, or closure.
* RevealingCoverUp: His after-action report in "A captainless squad", which is a complete lie and an attempt to pass off the "rescue Rags mission" as a picnic with a snowball fight interrupted by a bunch of bears and a freak blizzard, caused Claude, Raz, Kai, Riley, and Minerva to challenge the implicated members of Squad E to a mock battle. Oops.
* ThatCameOutWrong: At the end of his Squad Story, he's so fascinated by Teresa's behaviour that he decides to write a compilation of ''all'' the stories of Squad E's women... and that he'll plant hidden microphones for research purposes. He immediately backpedals once it's pointed out how bad this sounds.

->'''Rank:''' Private
->'''Age:''' 24
->'''Likes:''' Neige [=LePreton=], Hanna Carroll, Jascha Alatt
----
* ApologeticAttacker: Some of her attack quotes are her profusely apologizing to the enemy.
* BodyguardCrush: [[spoiler: She met her fiancé when she was hired as his bodyguard.]]
* CluelessDudeMagnet: Numerous men around the base have developed feelings for her thanks to her looks and sweet personality but she's completely unaware.
* DistractedByTheSexy: If surrounded by men, Aoife becomes frustrated and her performance degrades.
-->'''Aoife:''' [upon triggering Love Troubles] You really are handsome...
* DiscOneNuke: Aoife is hands down, the ''best'' Grenadier you'll be getting for a while, by virtue of her being the most well-balanced of the three you receive by the time the class is introduced. Almost all of her potentials are beneficial, and the one detriment she has is entirely situational, meanwhile Connor is potentially more powerful, but has two incredibly bad potentials that trigger very frequently. She is also highly accurate to boot and has an advantage during night missions, making her a popular early pick among players, and remains viable ''way'' into the late game, even after Riley has received her potential upgrade and more powerful alternatives like Jascha have joined the Squad.
* HappilyMarried: [[spoiler: To her fiancé back home, once the war is finished.]]
* HeroicSecondWind: Her Promised Love potential allows Aoife to gain significant boosts to her combat performance and defense should her HP fall below half. It is unlocked by completing her squad story.
** Doubles as {{Determinator}}, as Promised Love steels Aoife's resolve to survive [[spoiler:and go home to her fiancé no matter what]].
--->'''Aoife:''' No matter what, I will survive!
* TheLostLenore: [[spoiler:Of her fiancé at home, should she be [=KIA=]. It gets doubly tragic when you realize they're only ''engaged'' and not actually married yet, as her TragicKeepsake is her engagement ring.]]
* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: Her very nice demeanor and willingness to spend free time with the other men in the squad have led to a lot of guys assuming she may be interested in them. After witnessing firsthand how one of these conversations go, Hanna is appalled and advises her to please be more mindful of how she words her sentences to avoid any misunderstandings. [[spoiler:She apparently hasn't fully succeeded on the "mindfulness" part by the end of the game, as her final entry states that she still exudes "unintentionally seductive" that stresses her husband quite a bit.]]
* MeaningfulName: Her name is of Irish origin, meaning "beauty" or "radiance."
* MessyHair: A single lock that lays right in the middle of her face at all times.
* NiceGirl: Extremely kind to those around her, she has something nice to say about everyone.
* OnlyOneName: Like all Darcsen.

[[folder:Ben Smith / "Stahlschrott"]]
!!Stahlschrott
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vc4_stahlschrott_headshot.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/VolcanoOta (JP), Creator/RichardEpcar (EN)
->'''Rank:''' Private
->'''Age:''' 46
->'''Likes:''' Louffe, Scott Aldiss
----
* CyberneticsEatYourSoul: He was suggested by Marie to be far more amicable in the past, but the more often he had to be put back together, the more aloof and emotionally inscrutable he became. He gets a little better after bonding with Louffe.
* DeathSeeker: He keeps getting rebuilt by the military with each injury, so much so that he wants his next "death" to stick.
* {{Expy}}: Part-machine, wears shades, and voiced by Creator/RichardEpcar? Yep, he's [[Franchise/GhostInTheShell Batou]] with a dose of the [[Series/TheSixMillionDollarMan Six Million Dollar Man]], [[VideoGame/DeusExHumanRevolution Adam Jensen]] and the [[Film/TheTerminator Terminator]].
* FacialHorror: A good third of his face is composed of an ashen grey skin patch held together by staples, inviting comparsion to a FrankensteinMonster. He also sports a bulky metal plate under the jaw, possibly for keeping it in place.
* LightningBruiser: His potential "No Rest" allows him to cover far more distance than your average grenadier, and triggers reliably often, making him an even better candidate than ''[[HeroUnit Riley]]'' for pulling off certain strategies.
* MeaningfulName: His nickname, "Stahlschrott," means "scrap metal."
* PostEndGameContent: He only becomes avaliable after beating a Hard Skirmish, meaning you'll need to beat the campaign first.
* TheStoic
* SunglassesAtNight
* TakingTheBullet: He shields Louffe from an explosion. Fortunately for him, only one of his artificial arms was damaged, which is something the doctors can easily fix... not that that's something that pleases him.
* TerminatorImpersonator: Has the general looks, and the prostetic bodyparts to go with it; plus he spouts a ton of catchprases from [[TheAhnold Ahnold's]] movies ([[{{Franchise/Terminator}} "I'll be back" when he falls in combat,]] [[{{Film/Terminator2JudgmentDay}} "Come with me if you want to... Survive" during his Squad Story,]] [[{{Film/Predator}} "If he bleeds we can kill it" when his potential activates]], and so on).
* WhenHeSmiles: Marie comments on how nice it is to see him smile again after Louffe comments on how much him living means to them at the end of their Squad Story.

----
* AscendedExtra: From an NPC (tank driver) in the original ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles'', to a playable unit in [=VC4=].
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Riley, given both of them are the daughters of famous engineers from the original Europa World War. A fact which Riley lampshades at the end of their solo training session.
* TheCameo: Along with the rest of Squad 7. This time, serving as a grenadier.
* TheCutie: She's so cute and amicable that all of Squad 7 thinks of her as their kid sister.
* DoomedByCanon: If you've played the original, you'll already know ''[[KillTheCutie she doesn't]]'' survive the war...
* ObliviousToLove: Miles falls in love with Isara at first sight, during Squad E's joint training session with Squad 7. Except she fails to notice it, due to Miles' shyness around her.
* WrenchWench: Same as before. She even shares the schematics for her smoke bombs with Riley.

For tropes related to her character, visit the [[Characters/ValkyriaChronicles4ImperialX0 X-0]] page.
----
* DevelopersForesight: Crymaria has animations and voice lines for entering Last Stand, despite the seemingly improbable chance of this happening due to her HP and defensive stats.
* HealingFactor: Like Selvaria, Crymaria can randomly regain all health after finishing a salvo.
* MightyGlacier: Being a Grenadier, Crymaria is ''painfully'' slow, and the class' innately low AP doesn't help matters. She makes up for this with her StoneWall-grade HP and powerful defensive capabilities, however.
* NoSell: Crymaria is completely immune to being knocked down by explosions and slow effects.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Despite supposedly being "the most powerful Valkyrur" to ever walk the earth, Crymaria is overshadowed in nearly all aspects by Selvaria, her fellow DLC HeroUnit. Compared to Selvaria, who's [[AllYourPowersCombined a Scout, Shocktrooper, Lancer and Sniper thrown into one character]], Crymaria's only selling point is her big area-of-effect attack that does negligible damage to tanks, unlike her super-powerful boss version. Pretty much anything Crymaria can do, Selvaria can do it ten times better, without the baggage that the Grenadier class brings.
** Nowhere is this more emphasized than during Crymaria's version of the ''Two Valkyria'' showdown. Whereas Crymaria can only reliably handle infantry and anything hardier will need support from her own troops, Selvaria could just breeze through the mission alone without breaking a sweat due to her hilariously overtuned kit. Then again, it could also be GameplayAndStoryIntegration seeing as Selvaria has basically mastered her own powers despite being far weaker while Crymaria, powerful as she is, is plagued by self-loathing and mental instability that prevents her from going all-out without harming herself and others.
