!![=ToeJam=]
[[quoteright:833:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toejam_in_back_in_the_groove.png]]
[[caption-width-right:833:"Old Skool" [=ToeJam=] on the left, ''Back in the Groove'' [=ToeJam=] on the right.]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Greg Johnson (''[=ToeJam=] & Earl'', ''Panic on Funkotron''), Kirk [=McHenry=] (''Mission to Earth''), Tonez the Prince (''Back in the Groove'')

Half of the eponymous funky duo. [=ToeJam=] is brash and hip, and tends to act before thinking, but has a good heart. He has a crush on Lewanda in the second and fourth games, and on Latisha in the third.
----
* AccessoryWearingCartoonAnimal: In the first two games, [=ToeJam=] wears a white baseball cap, white gloves, a medallion, and white shoes. In ''Mission to Earth'', he gains a white shirt and blue pants.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: [=ToeJam=] didn't have much of a personality until the third game.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:According to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCx_vHUUrRs secret dialogue]], [=ToeJam=] moved in with Earl and his family after his parents disappeared, seemingly stranded on another planet.]]
* FatAndSkinny: He's the Skinny to Earl's Fat.
* FragileSpeedster: [=ToeJam=] is faster than Earl but has a shorter life bar.
* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler:The real reason he stole Lamont's rocket ship was to take pictures of Earth and its inhabitants to make Latisha's IllGirl sister, Janeese, happy]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: In the third game, [=ToeJam=] was a ''lot'' more arrogant and self-centered, though still a good guy under the bravado.
* OtherMeAnnoysMe: Co-op dialogue between [=ToeJam=] and Old Skool [=ToeJam=] will have the latter ask about his modern self's shirt, while the former asks if his past self is okay walking around mostly naked.
* RedOniBlueOni: The more active red oni to Earl's chill blue oni.
* StarfishAliens: Earl looks relatively humanoid, but [=ToeJam=] has three legs and two eyestalks with no head or mouth. A few of the other residents of Funkotron are equally bizarre-looking.
* StraightMan: [=ToeJam=] is generally the more sensible half of the duo compared to Earl.
* TookALevelInJerkass: [=ToeJam=] didn’t have much character in the first two games. Then in ''Mission to Earth'' he became a lovable selfish narcissist.
* TookALevelInKindness: ''Back in the Groove'' sees [=ToeJam=] being a lot nicer than in the third game.

!!"Big" Earl
[[quoteright:834:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/earl_in_back_in_the_groove.png]]
[[caption-width-right:834:"Old Skool" Earl on the left, ''Back in the Groove'' Earl on the right.]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Greg Johnson (''[=ToeJam=] & Earl'', ''Panic on Funkotron''), Greg Brown (''Mission to Earth'', ''Back in the Groove'')

The other half of the eponymous funky duo. Earl is fairly laid-back and loves to eat, and while he isn't always the brightest, he always has your back.
----
* BigEater: He eats a hot dog on the cover of the first game and can eat bad food in ''Mission to Earth'' and ''Back in the Groove''.
* BigFun: Earl is overweight, loves to party, and is a nice guy through and through.
* ComedicUnderwearExposure: Earl's shorts occasionally fall and he has to stop to pull them up. (Incidentally, his underwear is almost identical to his pants.)
* CoolShades: Earl is never seen without his killer shades.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Two out of four plots kick off due to Earl's questionable driving skills.
* ExtremeOmnivore: Earl can eat bad food without issue in ''Mission to Earth'' and ''Back in the Groove''.
* FatAndSkinny: He's the Fat to [=ToeJam's=] Skinny.
* GogglesDoNothing: The fact that Earl wears sunglasses doesn't make him any safer from enemies with flashbulbs.
* HalfDressedCartoonAnimal: Earl wears blue pants with red polka-dots, white tennis shoes, and sunglasses, but no shirt.
* ManChild: In the first game, to the point where [=ToeJam=] had to scold him for drawing on the walls in the elevator. Downplayed in later games.
* MightyGlacier: Earl is slower than [=ToeJam=] and his pants fall down occasionally, forcing him to stop and pull them back up, but he has a longer life bar that lets him take more hits.
* RedOniBlueOni: The calmer blue oni to [=ToeJam=]'s active red oni.
* RobotMe: He has a robot version of himself, Earl Bot, that appeared as DLC in ''Mission to Earth''.

!!Latisha
->'''Voiced by:''' Sherrie Jackson (''Mission to Earth''), Dee Dee Simon (''Back in the Groove'')

A sassy female alien with equal amounts of funk, Latisha is tough on the outside and soft on the inside. She and Earl are like siblings. In the third game, [=ToeJam=] has a crush on her, though she doesn't reciprocate. Latisha has a younger sister named Janeese.
----
* AffirmativeActionGirl: Latisha was added in the third game as the first female playable character in the series.
* HartmanHips: Had some fairly broad hips in ''Mission to Earth''. [[ExaggeratedTrope Exaggerated]] in ''Back in the Groove'' where her hips and rear are now so broad they are literally spherical from all angles.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: [[spoiler:She's the only one who doesn't know the real reason they went to Earth in ''Back in the Groove''.]]
* OnlySaneMan: She's the only one nonplussed when the duo reveals they "borrowed" Lamont's rocket ship, and notices that Earl is about to hit the wrong button.
* VitriolicBestBuds: She and [=ToeJam=] frequently argue and snark at one another but are still close friends.

!!Lewanda Pubbly
->'''Voiced by:''' Genevieve Goings

[=ToeJam=]'s love interest in the second and fourth games. Lewanda is flirty, smart, and sweet, and reciprocates [=ToeJam's=] feelings.
----
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Lewanda was initially described as sexy and flirtatious, but in ''Back in the Groove'' she's softer and sweet.
* TheCutie: Her portrayal in the fourth game, where she's very sweet.
* DitzyGenius: Lewanda may be the smartest member of the group, but she's often just as foolish and reckless as TJ and Earl.
* OddNameOut: She's the only character with a last name.
* PromotedToPlayable: Lewanda becomes a playable character in the fourth game.
* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler:She knows the real reason [=ToeJam=] and Earl went to Earth and keeps it a secret so Latisha will be surprised.]]
* TheSmartGuy: She's smart and a born leader in a crisis, and also great at math and computers.

!!Lamont the Funkopotamus
The closest thing to a ruler Funkotron has, Lamont is the lord of all things funky. When the Earthlings invaded Funkotron, he hid in the Funk D'mension and had to be coaxed out with his favorite things before all funk left the planet for good.
----
* BigGood: As the Funkopotamus, he counts as this, especially in ''Mission to Earth'' where he sends the trio to retrieve his Sacred Albums of Funk from the Anti-Funk.
* CrystalDragonJesus: Played for laughs in his ''Mission to Earth'' bio, which has deliberate Jesus parallels before going sideways.
* FisherKing: Once he left Funkotron to hide, all the funk started to fade from the planet.
* InconsistentColoring: He's peach-colored in ''Panic on Funkotron'' and light blue in every subsequent game.
* MacGuffin: His 12 Sacred Albums of Funk help keep everything funky; when they're stolen in ''Mission to Earth'', funk everywhere is in danger.
* MrExposition: He tells everyone what's going on in ''Mission to Earth''.
* TheRunnerUpTakesItAll: He won second prize in a contest and the reward was his 12 Sacred Albums of Funk.
* SecondPlaceIsForLosers: At first, he was ''really'' unhappy about taking second place because first prize was a pair of rocket skates.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Other Funkotronians]]
!![=ToeJam=]'s Family
[=ToeJam=]'s family, consisting of his parents, two younger twin sisters, a baby sibling of an indeterminate gender, and his cousin [=GeekJam=]. [=GeekJam=] debuted as DLC in ''Mission to Earth''.
----
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: With the exception of [=GeekJam=], none of them have been seen since the first game. [[spoiler:Secret dialogue in ''Back in the Groove'' reveals they disappeared when [=ToeJam=] was young and became stranded on another planet]].
* GeekPhysiques: [=GeekJam=] has among the lowest life bars of the entire cast.
* MagikarpPower: [=GeekJam=] has the weakest starting stats of any character in ''Back in the Groove'', but his special ability means he can potentially max out his stats in a single playthrough if you find enough school books.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: They all greatly resemble [=ToeJam=].

!!Earl's Family
->'''Flo voiced by:''' Katrece Raine
Earl's family, consisting of his mom, Flo, his father, and younger siblings. Flo is a retired pilot and just as funky as her son.
----
* ActionMom: Flo is a playable character in the fourth game and is just as active as the rest of the cast.
* AscendedExtra: Flo appeared on one screen in the first game and is playable in the fourth.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Earl's other relatives haven't been seen since the first game.
* PromotedToPlayable: Flo's playable in the fourth game.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: They all greatly resemble Earl.

!!Lewanda's Family
Lewanda's family, including her mother, her identical cousin named Sharice, and mischievous younger siblings.
----
* BrattyHalfPint: Lewanda's little brother(s) love messing with their sister's friends. To the extent nobody's sure if they're actually twins, or just one kid pretending to be twins.
* TheUglyGuysHotDaughter: Lewanda's mom is some kind of polka-dotted blob thing with a mouth and sunglasses. Lewanda looks nothing like her and is the game's love interest.

!!Sharla
A friend of Lewanda, who's also jealous because she thinks Smoot likes her. She's always either happy or sad. Sharla becomes a couple with Bloona in ''Back in the Groove''.
----
* AdaptationalSexuality: As with Bloona, she was interested in a male NPC in ''Panic on Funkotron'', but is now in a couple with Bloona as of ''Back in the Groove''.
* CannotSpitItOut: She gets awkward when talking about herself and Bloona and refers to it in a roundabout way.
* ChubbyChaser: She's in a relationship with Bloona as seen at the end of ''Back in the Groove''.
* MoodSwinger: In ''Panic on Funkotron'' she's ''always'' crying, but whether she's crying tears of joy or tears of happiness seems to change on a whim.
* WhenSheSmiles: ''Back in the Groove'' has her be extremely happy over being with Bloona, and the player characters are happy to see her smiling so much.

!!Smoot
A self-obsessed alien. Sharla thinks he has a crush on Lewanda, but he's actually in love with himself.
----
* SmallNameBigEgo: Smoot is a total narcissist.
* TookALevelInKindness: In ''Back in the Groove'' he apparently entered a betting pool on whether the PC would survive. It turns out he actually bet on them pulling it off, and offers to give them what he won.

!!Peabo
A young alien with multiple eyes who loves to laugh. He becomes a couple with Bloona in ''Panic on Funkotron'', and acts like a younger brother to the main cast.
----
* BornLucky: He has the highest base Luck stat in ''Back in the Groove'', making opening broken presents and other luck-based mechanics easier.
* HiccupHijinks: At least in the second game, he gets a case of the hiccups any time he gets scared (and with an alien invasion going on, the planet losing its funk, and an aggressive would-be girlfriend, there's a lot to be scared of). This leads to a puzzle or two where the player has to help him out because he's the only one who knows an important clue.
* PromotedToPlayable: Peabo is playable in the fourth game.
* TagalongKid: He's among the youngest of the cast members.

!!Flarney
A two-headed alien who has difficulty making up his minds. He has a cousin named Tomo.
----
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Flarney, thanks to having two heads, can never make up his mind about ''anything'' and tends to give fairly unhelpful hints as a result.

!!Bloona
A friend of Earl's who shares his love of food. She has a pet Funkotronian dog, which she cares for deeply. Bloona becomes a couple with Peabo in ''Panic on Funkotron'', and with Sharla in ''Back in the Groove''.
----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: To Peabo in ''Panic on Funkotron''. Throughout the game, she chases him and tries feeding him candy bars. They only become a couple because Peabo gives in. Averted in ''Back in the Groove'' where her relationship with Sharla is much more positive.
* AdaptationalSexuality: Chased after Peabo in ''Panic on Funkotron'' she's in a couple with another girl in ''Back in the Groove''.
* BigEater: Bloona is always seen eating something (and she's always trying to force feed Peabo candy as well).
* FatAndProud: Bloona is overweight but not afraid to show off her midriff in a shirt clearly too small for her.
* HiddenDepths: The fourth game reveals she's opened a pet adoption cafe.

!!Old Otis
An elderly resident of Funkotron who can still jam with the younger generation.
----
* RamblingOldManMonologue: Otis is rather fond of these. The others keep him around because he actually has a lot of very useful advice to give. Even if they excuse themselves quickly once he gets around to giving it.

!!Chester and Lester
Two identical aliens who are almost never in the same place.
----
* TwinSwitch: Chester and Lester ''love'' to pull this. Only one of them is ever seen on-screen at a time, and them constantly flip-flopping on who the duo is talking to becomes a RunningGag. At the end of the game, they ask if Chester and Lester really ''are'' twins or just one person who's been screwing with everyone this whole time. [[NonAnswer The answer: Yes.]] This is finally resolved in ''Back In The Groove'', where Chester and Lester appear together in the post-game.

!!Trixie
A mermaid-esque alien with magical powers of funk. She gives the duo special abilities in ''Panic on Funkotron'' to help with the Earthling invasion.
----
* EarlyBirdCameo: Trixie, who would play a major role in ''Panic on Funkotron'', can be found on the ending screen in the first game (when [=ToeJam=] and/or Earl arrive on Funkotron) on a hidden island tucked away in a corner of the map.
* OurMermaidsAreDifferent: Trixie is some kind of green alien mermaid who appears when the player finds one of her Super Secret Funk Orbs, granting the duo a power-up (like unlimited coins, unlimited Funk-Vacs, or double the gains on presents) that lasts until the end of the level. The description from the manual goes so far to suggest she's some kind of goddess. With how, in that game at least, she'll appear if the player can locate a secret area (that is, prove themselves worthy) and bestow them with a special power, there might be something to it.

!!Suteki
A robot DLC character added in ''Mission to Earth'', Suteki is about the same size as Latisha.
----
* ExtremeOmnivore: Like Earl, she can eat bad food.
* LightningBruiser: She can run faster and jump farther than Latisha, can eat bad food, and has increased health, making her a powerhouse.
* PutOnABus: According to the [[https://twitter.com/toejamandearl/status/1087411221169651717 official Twitter]], the guys forgot to charge her battery.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Earthlings]]
!!Helpful Earthlings
->'''Wise Man voiced by:''' Robert Skiena (''Mission to Earth'')
Earthlings who are non-hostile to the player and help them out, usually for a fee.
----
* AscendedExtra: The Wise Man in the Carrot Suit from the first game returns in Mission to Earth and Back In The Groove with an expanded role. That's to say, he not only identifies what's in presents for you, you also have to find him to receive promotions you've earned.
* BettingMiniGame: The Roleplayers in ''Back in the Groove'' will let you bet some money on a roll of the die.
* DreadfulMusician: The Opera Singer, who will kill all enemies on the screen with her voice for three bucks.
* HeelFaceTurn: The Roleplayers are the Nerd Herd from the first game, now grown-up and helpful to the player.
* {{NPC}}: None of them are playable.

!!Harmful Earthlings
Unfortunately for [=ToeJam=], Earl, and their friends, the majority of Earth's inhabitants are self-absorbed, oblivious, and out to get them. Many of these characters recur throughout the entire series.
----
* BadHumorTruck: One of the most dangerous enemies in the series is the ice cream truck, which does colossal damage and has a huge hitbox. Worse, it's a ''ghost'' ice cream truck that teleports around.
* CanisLatinicus: The instruction booklets give faux-Latinized names for each type of Earthling that appears in the game. Most memorable of these is Cupid's Latin name: "Cupidus Stupidus."
* ChestMonster: The dreaded Mailbox Monster, who will attack if you get too close--and aside from waiting to see if eyes randomly appear in the mail slot, this is the only way to distinguish the two.
* DepravedDentist: One of the enemies is a dentist dead-set on giving you the drill, complete with [[EvilLaugh maniacal laughter]].
* DigAttack: The moles who steal your presents burrow underground to attack.
* DreadfulMusician: ''Mission to Earth'' has a country singer enemy who harms you with music.
* EnfantTerrible:
** The Little Brat from the second game onward kicks your character in the shins.
** In ''Panic on Funkotron'' only, there are two others: one wearing a baseball cap who throws tomatoes at you and another who shoots spitballs at you while being carried by balloons.
** The Medusa Baby in the third game will randomize some of your presents.
* InvoluntaryDance: The Hula Dancer enemy can distract Toejam and Earl by making them dance compulsively.
* LittleGirlsKickShins: How the little girls from ''Panic on Funkotron''-onward attack.
* ParentalNeglect: The shopping cart lady, whose only interaction with her wailing baby is to stop occasionally and yell "SHUT UP!" at him.
* PsychoPoodle: Enemies in the second game. If the rich lady they belong to gets caught before they are, they get a lot faster and crazier.
* StatusEffects: Wahini will make you do a dance if you get too close to her, slowing you down. Cupids fire arrows [[InterfaceScrew which make you lovestruck]].
* TookALevelInBadass: The little girls were the lowest threat in ''Panic on Funkotron''. In ''Back in the Groove'' they start doing jump kicks that would make Creator/BruceLee proud, and by the end you'll be facing versions that are the ''most'' dangerous enemies in the game.
* ThreateningShark: If a shark gets close, you'll hear a quick snippet of the ''Film/{{Jaws}}'' theme as a warning.

!!The Anti-Funk
The main villain of ''Mission to Earth'' and the one responsible for stealing Lamont's funky albums. His real name is James.
----
* BigBad: While all other games lacked a main villain, the Anti-Funk is responsible for the plot and stole Lamont's 12 Funk Albums.
* DemBones: Appears as a green, floating skull.
* FloatingLimbs: His hands are attached to him via some sort of energy.
* TomTheDarkLord: Apparently his real name is "James", if the description above is any indication.
