!!Ryouta Akagi
!!!Super High-School Level Choreographer
[[quoteright:108:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryoutaakagi_3207.png]]
->''"It’s alright, Ryouta! Men don’t cry. Let’s give it our best."''

A bright eyed dancer who dreams of becoming a heroic, handsome young man. Though entering prison at the age of seventeen, he's [[OlderThanHeLooks dreadfully short for his age,]] with a childish mindset and personality to match his youthful frame. He can be a handful at times, but his optimism almost never lets up and his playfulness never goes down. [[spoiler: He's killed in Chapter 3, shot to death by Monobear for taking an unpaid item from the Monoshoppe.]]
----

* DarkAndTroubledPast: One of the few inmates to avert this trope. Throughout his childhood and the discovery of his talent, not a lot of bad things happened to him.
* DidntSeeThatComing: [[spoiler: His death in Chapter 3]]. Ryouta may have been the most naive out of the cast, and he seemed to trust everyone too easily, but he didn't seem like the type to kill and no one expressed any reason to kill him or consider him a target. Even resident ManipulativeBitch Ai didn't think of him as much of a target. But still, [[spoiler: she found him shot to pieces at the foot of the entrance to prison store]], and she and every other survivor were visibly shocked.
* GratuitousEnglish: Uses this from time to time.
-->"<Woah! Dancing in the shadow!>"
%%zce* {{Keet}}
* [[spoiler: KillTheCutie]]
* InelegantBlubbering: He does this a lot when he's scared or upset. This mostly shows up during investigations.
* HeroWorship: Towards Atlas.
* IWantToBeARealMan
* LudicrousGibs: [[spoiler: What he's reduced to after Monobear catches him essentially stealing candy.]]
* '''OlderThanHeLooks''': So much that ''everyone'' assumed he was a child upon meeting him. It doesn't help that he has some issues regarding that.
** OneOfTheKids: He's not helping much with his case though, as he's actually very naive and childish.
* OutOfFocus: He doesn't show up during Chapter 3 or says anything of worth for a while. [[spoiler: When he does show up again, he's paying a [[DisproportionateRetribution heavy price]] for shoplifting.]]
* PutOnABus: For at least a Chapter, his OutOfFocus nature (as noted above) is explained by him hiding in his room in fear. He comes out once or twice, but by those times, he's mostly confused.
** BusCrash: [[spoiler: In Chapter 3.]]
* ShooOutTheClowns: Ryouta might not be the most serious of the cast, but his naivety did sort of bring a sense of alleviation to the horror of living in a prison. [[spoiler: So, obviously, he was going to die doing something as simple as forgetting to pay for candy.]]
** RealLifeWritesThePlot: The RP has a policy for those who don't respond at least once in the current Chapter, and it involves [[spoiler: a mandatory execution from Monobear at a random point in time.]]
* ShopliftAndDie: [[spoiler: Unfortunately, if you don't pay for your food you get filled with holes instead!]]
* TechnicolorEyes: Blaring pink with light blue circles.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Hamburgers, apparently. Also, junk food in general.
* [[spoiler: WeHardlyKnewYe]]

!!Oten Kouei
!!!Super High-School Level Hitman
[[quoteright:108:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oten_5246.png]]

->''"...I think everyone is afraid of me. But they don’t need to be. I just want…to be friends. I just want everyone to be safe."''

An orphan who was raised by his older brother, a member of the {{Yakuza}}; when his brother was killed by a rival gang, he joined himself, as he felt he was left with no better option. Oten's defining characteristic is an unwavering belief in honor - at least, honor as he defines it, which often leads to him attempting to 'correct' the behavior of others. This can be small injuries or even the most drastic and obvious solution - death. When he's on the job, he is a focused killing machine; when he's not, he can be a little odd. But he insists that no one fear him because of his talent, because he just wants to make friends. He wants to live his life as a hitman, but also be a regular boy. Needless to say, it's been hard.

[[spoiler: He's the victim of Chapter 3 (the ''only'' one, since Ryouta broke the rules and therefore doesn't count), having been hit in the back of the head by Junpei and drowned by Ai Senzaki.]]
----
* AmbiguouslyBi: [[http://shslhitman.tumblr.com/post/86776395322/hit-003-regret-oten Have you seen how long he held Banri's hands?]]
* BeingGoodSucks: He thinks that he is doing the right thing in defending others and standing up for honor, but no one else seems to understand this. Probably because he's a hitman and kills people.
* BrutalHonesty: If you've done something he doesn't agree with, he won't hesitate in telling you that [[DisproportionateRetribution you deserve to die]].
* CannotTalkToWomen: Not necessarily that he's a wreck, but he just doesn't seem to be able to say the right things. He wants to compliment them, but he insults them. See his first interaction with Senzaki:
--> I can help you b-but I just…I just wanted to say…N-…Nice cans…!
* CasanovaWannabe: Three guesses as to why he's not good at it.
* DoomMagnet: Oten's life is put in danger every single day. Danger and despair is his life – and yet in the one situation it shouldn't be, i.e. going to school and making friends, it's in danger yet again. He then seems to warm up to Kouya and Banri in the early chapters, but [[spoiler: both of them are revealed to be the murderers of their respective chapters-- one after the other, mind you-- and are executed afterwards.]] Poor guy can't catch a break.[[note]] Side note, even when he moved from Ultimate Bullet Time to Roulette Rampage, things still go awful for him as far as making friends goes. Seems the trope extends past the fourth wall for this one.[[/note]]
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette
* FourEyesZeroSoul: Wears green glasses when he's performing a hit on someone (and a few of his sprites with more calculating/unhinged expressions).
* HiddenEyes: An odd example - he has this shadow even when his eyes are clearly visible.
* HitmanWithAHeart: Oten refuses to kill or even injure anyone who has not committed what he considers to be a dishonorable deed. So yes, although he could splatter your brains across the wall with one shot, he won't do it as long as you follow the path of honor.
* HonorBeforeReason: [[spoiler: When Kouya is found guilty of murdering Masato, he claims that he's committed an incredibly dishonorable act, despite the fact that not doing so would've caused everyone to starve to death.]] This is also pretty much Oten in any situation, and he will [[TheFettered become a different, stronger person when it comes to upholding his code of honor.]]
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: He's never had them before, and he's pretty tired of [[HatesBeingAlone not having them.]] Unfortunately, he's really bad at making them. [[spoiler: The closest friend he had, Kouya, ended up being the murderer in Chapter 1.]]
* ImplausibleDeniability: [[spoiler: Oten absolutely refused to believe that Kouya was the murderer, despite all the evidence clearly pointing to him. He was more convinced that someone had framed him, rather that than he had done it.]]
* IWarnedYou: In a bit of extra material and in Chapter 3, [[spoiler: he gets told this by Banri (ghost and Alter Ego form) after he told him that he was just as likely to die in prison.]]
* KnightTemplar: He's basically what you'd get if [[Manga/DeathNote Kira]] was a hitman.
* [[invoked]]LawfulNeutral: Will do anything to uphold his code of honor.
* MoodSwinger
* MoralMyopia: Believes the best way to punish people for dishonorable actions, such as murder, is...by killing them, because he determined what is dishonorable to begin with. Although for smaller offenses, he'll ''just'' cause them pain until they learn their lesson.
* MortalityPhobia: Either develops one or becomes more pronounced after the events of Chapter 2.
* TheNameIsBondJamesBond: Kouei, Oten Kouei. ([[LampshadeHanging A little too Bond there, Oten]].)
* SacredFirstKiss: Mixes with AccidentalKiss with Banri Bunko. What at first was just Banri comforting him ended with Oten tripping, pulling down his gas mask, and crashing their lips onto each other. Which became more of a proper kiss when Banri sat himself up.
* SedgwickSpeech: After being told by [[spoiler: AE Banri]] that he's just as human as anyone else in prison, Oten snaps and rants at him that he plans on surviving the whole ordeal. [[spoiler: This happens in early Chapter 3, where he's killed off not long afterwards.]]
* SharpDressedMan
* TearsOfFear: Began to cry uncontrollably when [[spoiler: Kouya was discovered to have been the murderer. It was a combination of feelings – betrayal, fear, sadness, anger.]] Oten tends to cry when he's afraid or upset.
* ToBeLawfulOrGood: After the events of Chapter 2, Oten becomes increasingly conflicted with his feelings towards his friends and their decidedly dishonorable secrets, coming to a head when he speaks with [[spoiler: the Banri Alter Ego.]]
* TookALevelInCynic: Oten came into Hope's Peak starry-eyed and ready to make friends, but the 1st murder changed that. He now realizes he really can't trust everyone like he initially thought.
* WeAllDieSomeday: Chapter 3 has Oten come face to face with mortality, made worse by Banri telling him so in an effort to cheer him up. He doesn't accept this at all.
* WhatTheHellHero: Oten was ''pissed'' at Banri [[spoiler: after he killed Nagisa and Boa and tried to get away with it]]. He tried to tell him that whatever advice he might have is irrelevant because of [[spoiler: the blood on his hands]]. [[spoiler: He begins to give Banri another one after ''he's'' died and been converted to an Alter Ego as well. He couldn't stop himself, really.]]

!!Kouya Itotani
!!!Super High-School Level Omo-Zukai
[[quoteright:108:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kouyaitotani_4998.png]]
->''"…You wouldn’t hit a kid with glasses, would you, Hoa-san?"''

A seventeen year old puppeteer with a stoic personality. [[spoiler: He's the culprit of Chapter 1, and the killer of Masato Masamoto. He is made to star in a false puppet show with himself as the puppet and stabbed in both arms and head by the corpse of his victim, and then crushed underneath his performance stage.]]
----
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: [[spoiler: He's strung up like a puppet by Monobear and made to walk a distance while his limbs are pulled painfully, dislocating them from their sockets. Then, as the scenery changes, the body of Masato is made to approach him and stab him in his left and right arms. The stage they're on crumbles beneath them, and as Kouya's lying against the rubble, Masato's corpse pierces him through the skull.]]
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler: Through the head. Though considering how much pain he was in by that point, it may have been the most merciful part of his execution.]]
* LonelyRichKid: Supplementary materials reveal that his parents were always away, which left him alone on their estate. He does have siblings, but they don't pay much attention to him either.
* OnlyFriend: To Oten in Chapter 1. As it turns out, [[spoiler: this trope was subverted before the events of the Roleplay. A couple of entries in Banri's journal note that he was one of his confidants for his illness and very much treated him as a friend. The final Trial also revealed that they had all known each other at that point.]]
* StoicSpectacles
** [[spoiler: FourEyesZeroSoul]]: Though this one is a weird case. He explicitly says [[spoiler: it's for the good of the rest of the students]], but his demeanor made the rest of the kids (and ''especially'' Oten) see him as nothing but a monster. It doesn't hurt that we learn nothing about him during his brief stay in prison.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler: With the first motive leaving the kids without any food or water, Kouya claims to have killed Masato with their best interest in mind. Though he also claimed to have killed him to see if their circumstance was real...]]
* YouWouldntHitAGuyWithGlasses: see his Character Quote.
* [[spoiler: WeHardlyKnewYe]]

!!Junpei Nakagawa
!!!Super High-School Level High Board Diver
[[quoteright:108:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/junpeinakagawa_7636.png]]
->''"Even if it's naive, I'd rather dive in and give it a try than be scared and alone the whole time."''

The oldest child of a large family with a small income, Junpei spent much of his childhood taking care of his younger siblings while his parents worked to support them, isolating him from his peers. He discovered his talent for diving at a local pool while attempting to learn how in order to teach his siblings himself. He got picked up professionally not long afterwards, allowing his family to live comfortably, at the cost of further distance from other kids his age at the time. Awkward and unsure of himself, but empathetic and a chronic optimist. [[spoiler: He is one of the five inmates to survive the final trial and escape the prison.]]
----
* AccidentalAthlete: How he discovered his talent.
* AccidentalPervert: Accused of being this during the Chapter 2 trial when he revealed that he found a [[spoiler: bloody sponge in the girl's bathroom]] during investigation.
* BigBrotherInstinct: The majority of the time he displays this with Misaki since she reminds him of one of his sisters, but he also displays some brotherly techniques when trying to calm down others, like he does with Oten after he has a panic attack.
** He also has a bit of this with Miwa, seeing that he was [[spoiler: prepared to hurt one of his friends if there was a threat on her life.]] However, after [[spoiler: the end of the game where they escape the prison together]], it might be [[MaybeEverAfter something else entirely]], based on his relationships page.
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Miwa, as revealed in Chapter 2 [[spoiler: when it comes to light that they've both kept their titles in their respective sports by [[OrderedToCheat less-than-legitimate]] means.]]
* BreakTheCutie: Has been happening gradually since their interment in the prison, coming to a head in Chapter 3.
* ClosetGeek: Gets really emotionally invested in anime, manga, videogames etc in his spare time; not quite what you'd expect from a SHSL athlete.
* DecoyProtagonist: He fits the mold, at first... kind-hearted guy who delivers at least one hope-filled speech during the course of the RP, and [[spoiler: survives to the end. In the final trial, however, Kaori Natsume is the one who stands up to Etsuko and leads the inmates out of the prison towards a new future.]]
* DumbassHasAPoint: Investigating with Miwa in Chapter 1, and raising the possibility that the plastic came from elsewhere.
* GogglesDoNothing: He doesn’t even wear them when he dives. He’s just gotten used to it.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold
* TheHeart: Desperately cares for his friends, and doesn't want them to despair. If he's really up to it, he can give off an impressive, hope-filled speech when you need one.
* InnocentBlueEyes: So bright. So fucking ''bright.''
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: The oldest child out of five siblings, two boys and three girls.
* NiceGuy: He sure is. He really is. He sure is. A nice guy.
* OddFriendship: Seems to be developing with Banri. [[spoiler: Unfortunately, [[KilledOffForReal it won't continue on Banri's part.]]]]
* ShipperOnDeck: He seems to think that Banri and Boa would have made a cute couple [[spoiler: even after he figures out that they all knew each other before their memories were wiped]].
* ShooOutTheClowns: While he never truly exits the narrative, his CharacterDevelopment throughout the RP downplays his sillier traits. Other than that, he's still the loving, brotherly blonde he was at the beginning.
* TapOnTheHead: Giver, not receiver. He whacks out [[spoiler: Oten]] when he's told that Miwa has a chance of being attacked by him in solitary.
* TenderTears: He's cried quite a lot, even over situations that don't directly concern him, simply because the fact that everything's terrible hits him particularly hard.
** BrokenTears: Upon the reveal of the Chapter 3 motive. The idea of another murder, along with [[spoiler: losing Oten's trust]] is too much for him to cope with at one time.
* TheDutifulSon: Spent a lot of his younger years taking care of his siblings for his parents, and continues to give his family most of his income from diving.
* TookALevelInCynic: Was a little more blindly optimistic and trustful of everyone at the start, but re-examined his priorities a little after the first murder.

!!Banri Bunko
!!!Super High-School Level Exterminator
[[quoteright:108:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/banribunko_3927.png]]
->''"I’m not confident I’ll live through this, s-so I’m simply weighing the options… whether it’d be more shameful to die lonely and paranoid, or p-painfully naive."''

From a young age, Banri has never really connected with others. The Bunko household was home to fleas and other insects until one day they garnered the funds to hire an exterminator. From then on, Banri had an obsession with becoming one. Also somewhat of an amateur chemist, the money gained from creating a revolutionary poison went toward cleaning up their home and Banri was allowed to become an exterminator. Despite this, his profession has caused many others his age to withdraw from him, even going so far as to call him disgusting when he in fact has an obsession with cleanliness.

[[spoiler: He was the culprit of Chapter 2, killing both Nagisa Iwase and Boa Hoa, and is made to exterminate a swarm of mini Monobears until they immobilize him while a larger Monobear squishes him flat.]]
----
* AccidentalKiss: Happened with Oten much to Banri's shock and embarrassment due to the fact that [[spoiler: he kinda liked it.]]
* AlliterativeName
* AmbiguouslyBi: See the Accidental Kiss above. He has had explicitly romantic feelings for Boa Hoa, but his interactions with Oten also come off as somewhat romantic at points.
* BerserkButton: Stop touching his fucking gas mask. Also bugs on his bare exposed skin or hair. [[spoiler: Even so much as mentioning Banri's mental illness causes him to erupt quite violently with emotion, having done it once in the presence of Boa Hoa and once at the Chapter 2 trial, even going so far as to scream frantically and angrily.]]
* CoolMask: Gas masks, man.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: [[spoiler: Forced to kill millions of mini-Monobears until they overtake him and immobilize him, then gets ''squashed by an even '''bigger''' Monobear'' until he's nothing but a bloody mess. The least we can say is that he died instantly.]]
* EccentricExterminator
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: While he's not unapproachable, he does give off creepy vibes to some of the other inmates and [[spoiler:his murder of Nagisa is painted as unambiguously unsettling, especially with his psychotic episode keeping him out of his right mind]].
* FinancialAbuse: Banri’s parents used his self-made revolutionary poison to make money. It's something he ends up sharing with Boa.
* GiantFootOfStomping: [[spoiler: In the final stages of his execution, a giant Monobear comes to exterminate Banri while he is immobilized. At first, he pulls out some poison gas to take Banri out-- but then quickly decides to squish him flat with his boot instead.]]
* {{Hallucinations}}: [[spoiler: Due to mental illness, Banri hallucinated that bugs were inside of him as well as inside of the areas he dwelt in and sometimes in other people.]]
* FreudianExcuse: [[spoiler: When you consider the fact that he was having a [[FreakOut near psychotic episode]] due to mental illness prior to murdering. It doesn't excuse his actions, but it does explain why he did it.]]
* KidsAreCruel: For a large portion of Banri’s life, he was constantly picked on and made fun of.
* NeatFreak: Banri ''thrives'' on cleanliness and hygiene.
** [[spoiler: PlayedForDrama later on. Because of his illness, he sees bugs everywhere on Nagisa and kills her to be rid of them. Notice how one of the items used during this is ''bleach'', and the main reason potassium was used was to 'cleanse' her from the inside.]]
* {{Polyamory}}: Banri ends up developing romantic feelings toward both Boa Hoa and Oten Kouei.
** NoRomanticResolution: Both of these respective crushes go decidedly nowhere considering the fact that [[spoiler: [[KillTheOnesYouLove Banri kills Boa]] and Oten is disgusted with him and despises him by the end of the Chapter 2 trial.]]
* ParentalNeglect: To an extent. Considering they did absolutely nothing for a long time when Banri was constantly subjected to being bitten by fleas.
* ScrubbingOffTheTrauma: [[spoiler: After murdering both Boa Hoa and Nagisa Iwase, Banri was overcome with so much guilt and paranoia that he began to scrub at his hands violently with a sponge until they were wounded and bleeding raw.]]
* ShirtlessScene: Not the most pleasant one in context, but to prove his innocence he pulls up his shirt to show that he doesn't have incriminating wounds on his chest during the Chapter 2 trial. [[spoiler: He doesn't. They're somewhere else...]]
* SpeechImpediment: When he was able to talk, he always began his sentences with a stutter.
* SympathyForTheDevil: Towards Ai Senzaki. Originally he saw her as quite the antagonist before realizing she behaved so cruel for a deeper reason.
** [[spoiler: Banri himself, as well. Despite having murdered two people, one for just being there and the other for witnessing it, and throwing at least three people under the bus in a trial while trying desperately to save his skin, a lot of people still feel bad for him. Some characters view him as just as much of a victim as the other two.]]
* TerrifiedOfGerms: As if it wasn’t obvious enough, he gets downright weepy and angry at the idea of being contaminated or infected.
* ThanksForTheMammary: Happened with Boa on accident, though she was asleep and doesn't recall it happening. Banri gets his face stomped on anyways which was also an accident.
* TheQuietOne
** CuteMute: It’s not strange to look at the mute guy and think he looks rather innocent or cute due to his silence and additional awkwardness.
** ElectiveMute: It’s not really elective because Banri doesn’t inherently choose when he speaks or when he doesn’t. Often times he opts against it because it is awkward and difficult for him due to his disability.
** TalkingWithSigns: Often instead of talking much he’ll merely write down whatever it is that he wants to say and hold it up.
* WorthyOpponent: Ai Senzaki at least regards him as this, since he was one of the only inmates that actually saw her {{Jerkass}} behavior for what it really was: a cry for help, mostly done out of fear for this situation. [[spoiler: They at least seem to be on friendly terms in the afterlife.]]

!!Jinta Katsuragi
!!!Super High-School Level Club President
[[quoteright:108:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jintakatsuragi_3457.png]]
->''" What good am I as a leader if I can’t even prevent murder?"''

A charismatic young man blessed with the gift of leadership, despite the stress and worry it brings upon him.
[[spoiler: The victim of Chapter 4, doused in oil and hit over the head with a bottle by Nabiki Kaname.]]
----
* [[spoiler: AccidentalMurder: while Nabiki did try to demand answers out of him after seeing the picture with him, Boa, and Misaki, she never meant to ''kill'' him by breaking the glass bottle over his head.]]
* BeingWatched: Chapter 3 has him tail Misaki and Kaori to see if they had anything to do with the mysterious photo that had been discovered a couple of days prior. Misaki catches him, though.
* CripplingOverspecialization: According to his Bio, leadership's the only thing he excels at.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Banri couldn't figure him out for a good while, at least.
* JapaneseSchoolClub: He's the SHSL Club ''President''. He was made to take a club every year starting from the sixth grade, and got leadership position in every single one of them.
* MysteriousNote: Jinta receives his own in Chapter 4 from a messenger simply called "A friend". This friend turns out to be [[spoiler: Nabiki Kaname.]]
* RavenHairIvorySkin
* ShirtlessScene: Gets one with Atlas and Banri in Chapter 2 to prove they don't have scars as signs of a struggle.
* SupportingLeader: He's sort of the moral center of the group, and tries to bring everyone together to try and keep their spirits up. However, his participation during trials and investigations is pretty low. [[spoiler: There's also the matter of his death, permanently barring him from participating in the inmates' escape further...]]
* RedHerring: [[spoiler: For Nabiki. After seeing the photo of Jinta, Misaki, and the deceased Boa Hoa together during the Despairing Incident, she came to the conclusion that they were the ones who locked the inmates up in the first place. She wrote to Jinta to have him confess to this crime.]]

!!Manabu Makoto / Atlas
!!!Super High-School Level Football Player
[[quoteright:108:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/manabumakoto_5233.png]]
->''"I’m sorry, but no one is going to get killed! Not on my watch! Though, I’m not exactly sure how I’m going to go about doing that…"''

Champion of football, role model to kids all across Japan, Atlas has come to save the day! Or, at least he would, if he wasn't so nervous. In reality, Manabu Makoto is just an average kid who wants to make kids smile. The boy decided to pick up his mantle after noticing a child excitedly watching high school football, after all. But despite the airs of heroics he puts on in his chosen sport, he never really feels like a hero to himself, and hates that he isn't as brave as he thinks he should be. But rest assured, he'll help when he can, and protect those he cares about with all he's got. [[spoiler: He is one of the five inmates to survive the final trial and escape the prison.]]
----
* AnimeHair: Even ''without'' putting in hair gel, it stays up!
* ClarkKenting: Like all good superheroes, Atlas tries to keep his life as Manabu Makoto a secret. Unlike most examples, though, it's not ''merely'' the [[DominoMask mask]] and personality keeping his identity. He dyes and styles his hair differently from his civilian persona (from brown to blonde), in addition to wearing colored contacts making his eyes appear blue.
* CowardlyLion: He's consistently shown fretting and worrying over his situation in the prison, and he's very panicky around dead bodies. Despite this, he's one of constant investigators before each trial and is quick to defend those he cares about.
* DarkSecret: During the Chapter 2 trial, Monobear decided to reveal ''everyone'''s secrets to the court, regardless of relevance to the case. In Atlas's case, Monobear revealed that He took performance enhancers to help in football.
* DominoMask: Wears a blue one as part of his superhero persona. It's come off only once.
* FriendToAllChildren: He started out helping in hospitals and cheering kids up. This trope is the catalyst for discovering his talent and superhero persona, and it's also part of the reason why he worries so much for [[OlderThanHeLooks Ryouta.]]
* HatesTheJobLovesTheLimelight: Let it be known that Atlas is ''not'' fond of football and the pain it brings. But if it'll make kids across the nation happy, he'll be more than glad to do it.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: He absolutely hates how cowardly he is on the inside, and is jealous of his superhero persona for having the confidence he lacks.
* InstantSedation: Knocked out with chloroform and stuffed into a locker in Chapter 3 after being tricked by the culprit with a MysteriousNote.
* LovableCoward

* PhenotypeStereotype: You would think that the football playing blonde-haired blue eyed kid with an English-sounding name would be an American. [[SubvertedTrope He's not,]] his hair is dyed, and that's an alias he's using.
* PrimaryColorChampion: With his blue football uniform, red cape and clips, and blonde hair, he really couldn't be anything else. This only applies to him when he acts as his superhero persona.
* SecondLove: To Kaori. ''Maybe''. They both get along quite well, she does aspire to get closer to him, and he ''does'' seem to reciprocate her feelings in part. [[spoiler: In the end, Kaori wishes to improve the world with him and everyone else, so they might have gotten together after the events of the first Roleplay.]]
* ShirtlessScene: He gets a shared brief one in Chapter 2 with Jinta and Banri to prove that they don't have scars as signs of a struggle.

* StepfordSmiler: To most people, he puts on a brave face and tells them not to worry. Behind their backs, he's just as frightened as anyone else and delves into HeroicSelfDeprecation, cursing himself for being nothing like his superhero persona.
* UnkemptBeauty: In Chapter 3, he notes that his hair's turning into a rat's nest without his usual gel. That doesn't seem to stop Kaori from fawning over him, though.

At the age of 9, she developed a strong affection for bowling and consistently went with her parents, and since then her skills have grown- enough to have her own team,, Lane Violation. After seven years of developing skills, she's acquired an acute sense of focus and concentration and a strong attachment to her friends. But between her developing hand disease and being stuck in prison, she's not going to let anything get her down. [[spoiler: She is one of the five inmates to survive the final trial and escape the prison.]]

* ClingyJealousGirl: Around Junpei and Ai, as she's afraid that her influence will corrupt him.
* {{GMPC}}: Her ''mun'' is one of the two creators of the RP.
* GratuitousEnglish: Apparently, she knows a couple of English words like "Strike", "Spare", and "Creamy". The first two are understandable since bowling ''is'' her profession, but she thinks creamy means... "cute"?
* GreenEyedMonster: One of the things that led her to be labeled as [[spoiler: At-Risk]] was an incident where she dropped a bowling ball on another competitor's hand purely out of jealousy.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Over the course of the RP, she's shown herself to be fiercely protective of Junpei and doesn't want him to get hurt, and she hadn't attempted to hurt anyone.
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: Ai usually mocks Miwa and Junpei's partnership by saying that Miwa's his girlfriend. She doesn't exactly help this perception though, since she's constantly trying to keep Junpei away from Ai because she's afraid of what her influence might do to him.
* InformedSelfDiagnosis: See above.

* TheRival: To Ai. The two frequently butted heads during their stay in prison, and she's one of the few who saw through her 'idol' persona from the get-go. However, she does earn a [[WorthyOpponent begrudging sense of respect]] from Ai [[spoiler: post-mortem]].

A bubbly, sweet, and energetic sixteen year old girl with an almost in-eradicable smile. Her knowledge in perfuming goes as far back as the age of 10, when she started experimenting with oils and fragrances to recreate the scent of the day she met a mysterious boy she befriended during Golden Week, and has made a name for herself with a line of perfume based off of that week. Though kind, she's a bit of a ditz and ends up coming off as a bit insensitive, cracking jokes at inappropriate times and speaking her mind without a filter. However, she holds her darker emotions in and tries to deny the more unpleasant thoughts and memories that crop up from time to time. [[spoiler: She is one of the five inmates to survive the final trial and escapes the prison.]]

----
* ACupAngst: In [[spoiler: the final trial after the reveal that they had lost three years worth of memories]], the first thing Kaori does is check if her chest has grown. No such luck.
* AmbiguouslyBi: So far, she's had romantic feelings for guys (one was her boyfriend and the other was Atlas) and as for girls, she makes an apology to her [[HeterosexualLifePartners closest friend]] Misaki that reads similar to a love confession in Chapter 4.
* BreakTheCutie: Slowly but surely happening over the course of the game. She finally breaks out in full blown tears in the beginning of Chapter 4.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
* EatingTheEyeCandy: She seemed awfully happy about seeing a shirtless Atlas when [[spoiler: He, Jinta, and Banri were asked to prove that they had no wounds.]]

%%* GenkiGirl
%%* GirlishPigtails
* {{GMPC}}: Like Miwa, her ''mun'' is one of the two creators of the RP.
* HeroicBSOD: After she scared off Misaki with her outburst in Chapter 4, she locked herself up in her room for a couple of days until the next motive was announced.
* InelegantBlubbering: Comes hand in hand with BreakTheCutie. The poor girl cries her heart out after seeing the desolate and empty land from the watchtower and can hardly say a word.
* IfWeGetThroughThis: ...she'll make some mighty nice perfume for all of them!
* InnocentlyInsensitive: The girl cracks jokes in the ''middle of a trial''. It can't get more insensitive than that. She gets better as the RP goes on.
* ItsAllMyFault: It's never elaborated how exactly her boyfriend gets into the car accident, but she still feels completely responsible for it.
* TheLeader: Despite her emotional hangups, she's the go-to leader of the group and one of the most consistent investigators during the latter half of the game. The final trial even culminates with her calling out the Mastermind on their ideology with a resounding "[[Franchise/{{Danganronpa}} You've got that wrong!]]"
* MeaningfulName: Her first name, Kaori, is also written as the word for "fragrance", which is almost prophetic for a girl who would grow up to be a perfumer.
* NaiveEverygirl: Besides her [[spoiler: boyfriend's death]], she's arguably the only one of the [[spoiler: surviving]] members with the least amount of emotional baggage, and is almost always seen with a bubbly, optimistic outlook on life. This ends up being her greatest advantage against the Mastermind.
* OfficialCouple: Pre-prison with a boy named Haru Takeyama. [[spoiler: Kaori was also indirectly responsible for his death.]]
** However, she achieved a MaybeEverAfter with [[spoiler: Atlas]] after the events of the game.
* PlatonicDeclarationOfLove: Given to Misaki during the beginning of Chapter 4 to cap off their reunion.
* SecondLove: Her developing crush on Atlas marks him as a potential one in Chapter 3. The fact that he may be the second one is regarding Kaori's [[spoiler: boyfriend's death prior to the start of the RP]].
* SailorFuku
* ShooOutTheClowns: She never really ''dies'', but her sillier traits are either downplayed or PlayedForDrama as the RP goes on. In particular, her character started to develop when she starts making friends with Misaki and when her [[spoiler: boyfriend's death]] was revealed in Chapter 2.
* StepfordSmiler: Type A. She's a genuinely nice and energetic girl, but there seems to be something hiding under that near-eternal smile. The mask finally cracks after the Chapter 2 trial with the reveal that [[spoiler: she was the indirect cause of her boyfriend's fatal car accident.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: Like her friend Misaki before her, she takes a ''big'' leap in Chapter 5's trial, calling out the Mastermind's ideology and convincing the survivors not to lose hope.

Born to overbearing parents, Boa was discovered to have a natural talent for mathematics at a young age. Upon learning she was a 'prodigy', she began to participate in all kinds of mind sports and mental calculation competitions. Though she took a sudden break due to family issues, she began participating once again, winning the MCWC for a third time and earning herself an invitation to Hope's Peak. She is sarcastic, lazy and a cynic. During her time in prison, she comes off as cold and harsh, but she slowly softens up to certain people. [[spoiler: She is the second victim of Chapter 2, choked to death by Banri Bunko.]]

* EatTheEvidence: In Chapter 2, when she receives Banri's secret.
* FinancialAbuse: Boa's parents persuaded her to use her arithmetic talents to compete in competitions and tournaments, only for her to then find out it was because they wanted her prize money which had been unfairly split since she had started competing.
** CynicismCatalyst: After finding out her parents essentially used her. Boa finds it difficult to trust others and assumes people who are unnecessarily nice to her have ulterior motives.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She was never much of a nice person while alive, but she had plenty of good and encouraging things to say about her fellow inmates [[spoiler: post mortem]].
* NeverSuicide: [[spoiler: In Chapter 2, she's found hanging from the giant burger in the cafeteria. Further investigation shows that she was strangulated ''long'' before she was discovered hanging.]]

* OnlyFriend: Banri was shaping up to be this for her, but their time was unfortunately cut short. [[spoiler: She used to have more friends while being observed by the Future Foundation, though.]]
* SheKnowsTooMuch: She [[spoiler:walks into the infirmary ''just'' as Banri was through with killing Nagisa. Both of them knew what was going to happen next...]]

Before entering Hope's Peak, Misaki didn't normally find herself with others her age. She was always quiet, as her parents were always working, and if they were ever at home, they were fighting with each other. Since she never had anything to do as a child, she busied herself looking at plants. Specifically, she liked to search through clover fields for {{Four Leaf Clover}}s, in hopes they would bring her luck. They never seemed to bring her any, though, so she resorted to making wishes on them. With her gained habit of staring at and studying plants, she seemed unapproachable to others, looking too busy while flipping through books and such. She found herself immersed in studying plants, as she had nothing else going for her. Though, with her discoveries she did find herself acquainted with several scientists, though of course they were all adults and nowhere near her age. She's unused to being trusted or spoken to in a friendly way, and it was an honest surprise to her to be treated so kindly when this incident began. [[spoiler: She is one of the five inmates to survive the final trial and escapes the prison.]]
----
* AloneAmongTheCouples: With [[spoiler: Miwa and Kaori]] achieving MaybeEverAfter with [[spoiler: Junpei and Atlas]], she's the only one out of the five surviving inmates that hasn't been given a pairing by the time the final Trial rolls around.
* BerserkButton: Ai pushes hers when she mocks her for the [[spoiler: plants turned toxic by her own growth formula]] in the Chapter 3 trial. She then proceeds to [[TookALevelInBadass turn the tide of the trial around.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Goes from a shy young woman to a confident one, openly investigating and finding some fire in her belly.
* DespairEventHorizon: Reaches this in Chapter 4 once the remaining inmates discover that the prison is in the middle of nowhere. She admits to herself that all of her friends are dying and she doesn't quite know what to do anymore, or even the ''point'' of continuing on when people are still suffering.
* EvilRedhead: At least, she ''used'' to be, [[spoiler: when she was part of SHSL Despair.]]

* TheLancer: As the roleplay rolls on, she essentially becomes Kaori's Number Two, confiding many of her secrets in her and investigating just as much as her partner.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Does this a lot with Junpei. He says that it's because she reminds him so much of his other younger sisters.
* RedheadsAreUncool: People perceive her as unapproachable, and she has trouble making friends because of it. However, she proves herself to be ''much'' more capable come Chapter 3 onwards.
* SecondLove: Thought to be this for Kaori in Chapter 4, but actually subverted; it was a [[PlatonicDeclarationOfLove platonic confession]].
* ShrinkingViolet: See above.
* TaremeEyes: Her eyes have a very gentle shape to them, befitting a sweet, shy girl like her.
* TookALevelInBadass: In the Chapter 3 trial.
* TwoGirlsAndAGuy: She's in a trio with Kaori and Atlas.
* WhenSheSmiles: She does smile sometimes, but she gives off an absolutely ''[[http://shsltrifolium.tumblr.com/post/97187408924/worry-seed-open adorable]]'' one when she talks to Kaori in Chapter 4.

However, during her time in prison, she's actually won over by some of the other inmates and becomes more friendly towards them. If he didn't confess to (supposedly) being one of the masterminds, she'd just trick him into believing that she'd burn him alive.]]
* LadySwearsALot: What ''else'' did you expect from a girl on the high seas?
* MissingMom: Her mother died when she was young, leaving her father to raise her by himself.
* MutualPining: With [[spoiler:Ai, who liked her just as much but never told her.]]
* MysteriousNote: [[spoiler: she sends one to Jinta in Chapter 4, accusing him of being one of the people responsible for locking her and the other inmates up in the prison.]]
* OddFriendship: With Senzaki. Where Senzaki is a jerk and somewhat antagonistic with the rest of the inmates, Nabiki is much more approachable.
** OppositesAttract: Since the third and fourth Trials reveal that [[spoiler:they both love each other, but never told each other]]. Senzaki is more feminine in appearance (but not necessarily in personality), while Nabiki is tomboyish and more masculine looking in comparison.
* RaisedByDudes: Her boyish and somewhat crude nature is caused by living around seamen all her childhood.
* RealWomenNeverWearDresses: Having been raised by and around men all of her life, Nabiki's been made to believe that more masculine traits are the stronger, more reliable ones. Many of her {{Bifauxnen}} traits are because of this fear of appearing weak.
* ShoutOut: [[spoiler: Her execution takes some cues from the 1912 sinking of the ''Titanic''.]]
* StatuesqueStunner: She's on a particularly high end of the Japanese height scale, clocking in at a whopping ''5'11"''.
* SouthernFriedGenius: It's been joked around early on that her dialect somewhat resembles [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic Applejack's]], and there's no doubt that she's not lacking in smarts (at least in naval navigating) thanks to her acceptance in Hope's Peak.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler: As the culprit for Chapter 4, she's now free to join Ai at any time.]]
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Tomboy to Ai's Girly Girl. Though one could make the argument that she's the Tomboy to every ''other'' girl in the prison...

->''"We will be fine, don’t fret, for as long as you heed my guidance He is protecting us…"''

Once an unruly child of God, she had since reformed and vowed to become the best nun she could be. As a young woman, she had more than exceeded that goal, embarking on journeys worldwide to help those in need and becoming a prioress while still in high school. She became wildly popular with the populace because of her calm and orderly demeanor with an unwavering smile, and when those in trouble need comfort she will be one of the first to provide. After all, she feels its her duty to become a "beacon of light" for others.[[spoiler: For her Mastermind tropes, see the Spoilers folder below.]]

* BigOlEyebrows
* ClearMyName: After Kaori claims that she saw Etsuko [[spoiler: drown Oten]] in the Cathedral fountain. See FrameUp below.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: The hair's a slightly darker purple, but it's there.
* DeadpanSnarker: She has a little bit of it in her.
--> '''Etsuko:''' (''After seeing the courtroom agree to [[ItMakesSenseInContext checking for clues on their shoes by doing handstands]]'') Like 90 percent of us are wearing skirts
* EnfantTerrible: Supplementary materials revealed that she was an ''extremely'' unruly child before being sent to the covenant.
* FrameUp: [[spoiler: Done by Ai Senzaki in Chapter 3, by disguising herself as Estsuko with one of her spare robes while she's drowning Oten.]]
* FingertipDrugAnalysis: Etsuko does this in Chapter 4 when she finds [[spoiler: Jinta]]'s body surrounded by a strange yellow fluid. Thankfully, it was just oil.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: She refers to Masato as a "kind, charming" young man when she reflects on all of the other inmates. He may not have talked for very long [[spoiler: before he died]], but he was an absolute ''bastard''.
* UsefulNotes/JapaneseChristian: [[spoiler: Subverted. She's not actually a nun.]]
* NaughtyNuns: A downplayed example. In Chapter 2, when Monobear decided to tell ''everyone's'' secrets, he states that Etsuko [[spoiler: wears naughty red lingerie to feel sexy sometimes.]] She's incredibly embarrassed by it.
* NiceGirl: The nicest of the cast by a long shot. Her presence tends to calm others. However.... (see [[spoiler: BigBad]])
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler: In Chapter 3, She and Oten are found lying near the baptizing pool. Etsuko turned out to be alive, but unconscious. [[KilledOffForReal Oten, on the other hand...]]]] However, subverted in that she wasn't in any real danger of dying.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: After the events of Chapter 3, Etsuko stares the killer, [[spoiler: Ai Senzaki]], straight in the face and tells her to rot in the darkest pits of hell. Take note that before this incident, she had been nothing short of nice and polite with all of the cast members, even [[{{Jerkass}} Masato]]. This all turns out to be foreshadowing to the fact that the her right now is not the ''true'' Etsuko. [[spoiler: See the Spoilers section for that.]]
* SaintlyChurch
* StepfordSmiler: She feels she needs to keep face whenever something awful has happened. The problem is, her usual warmth and radiance is replaced by a soft, quiet voice.
* SweetTooth: In the beginning of Chapter 2, she's seen with a "meal" of ''five'' cans of cake frosting, two of which have been picked clean by the time Oten comes around to talk with her.
* WingdingEyes: If you look closely, you can see crosses in her irises.

!!! (Not) Super High School Level Nun
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/untitled-1_3962.png]]
Etsuko Reiki is not who she says she is. In reality, she was the only inmate with all of her memories intact ''and'' not officially part of the student roster at all. As a member of the Future Foundation she was supposed to monitor the surviving remnants of Super High School Level Despair, but the group she was observing- our very own Roleplay group- was considered too far gone to redeem them. However, she's decided to take matters into her own hands...

After the Chapter 5 trial, she is executed by nailing her to a cross, watching her bleed out, and then blowing her up with the bombs at her feet.

* AffablyEvil[=/=]FauxAffablyEvil: Fluctuates on either. While it ''is'' true that she has trapped everyone else inside of the prison, she was still genuinely polite with them and wanted them to redeem themselves. It's even reflected in her final Relationships page update, where all of her last thoughts on the inmates are crossed out and replaced with her calling them sinners.
* BadHabits: Because she's revealed to not actually be a nun, she's been doing this for the whole roleplay.
* BigBad: Of the first Roleplay.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Played with. She had been lying to the other students for he longest time, and she ''did'' put them into the Despair Game, but she honestly wanted to weed out the good from the bad and redeem the students, albeit in her own twisted little way.
* CovertPervert: If Monokuma is anything to go by. While Etsuko doesn't say anything lewd proper, Monokuma ''does'' make some comments about some of the boys during Chapter 2 and 3's trials. Not to mention her [[NaughtyNuns 'red lingerie ' secret]] from Chapter 2...
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: As the Mastermind, she's obligated to get one. At first she gets pelted with rotten fruit by Monobears dressed as children, but then bombs get put into the mix, and she's chased to an enormous black and white cross where she gets nailed by the hands and feet. For added effect, her ''neck'' is nailed down as well, and bombs go off at the feet of the cross as she's struggling for breath.
* DissonantSerenity: That ''smile'' she has in her reveal picture... You can see it on the right here.
* EvilAllAlong: Of the 16 people trapped in prison, she's the only one that knew everything that was going on, and the only one who hadn't had her memories taken away.
* FaceHeelTurn: She was with the ''[[BigGood Future Foundation]]'' before the events of the game. Regardless of whether she thought her methods were sound or not, she actively went against them and created a new Despair Game for her own purposes.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: There have been numerous hints to her being the Mastermind of the first Roleplay:
** When the inmates visit the Warden's office, they find that there is a single Future Foundation jacket left hanging. They find no other similar jackets during their time in prison.
** The prison is filled with a lot of religious symbolism, including the chapel on the third floor.
** Monobear mocks the other inmates during the Chapter 5 trial, saying that to prove who the culprit is, they would have to "grow something! Jump off that ledge! ''Pray really hard''!"
** Etsuko's outburst in the wake of Chapter 3, as noted above.
* IronicEcho: In a way, Etsuko's plan turns out to be this in comparison to Makoto Naegi's plan from ''VisualNovel/Danganronpa2GoodbyeDespair''. Both parties had faith that the SHSL Despair groups they found could be redeemed after their artificial memory loss, both put those groups into an isolated program to begin the rehabilitation process, and both went under the Foundation's noses to do it. However, while Makoto intended for his group to rehabilitate by replacing the despairing and violent memories with better, more hopeful ones, Etsuko put them into a Despair Game and had them fight for their lives in order to prove themselves.
* ItsAllAboutMe: After her secret's gone out, she screams at the surviving inmates for trying to escape and deviate from her plan after all ''she's'' done for them.
* KnightTemplar: Once it's revealed, you see it's an even ''worse'' case than Oten's, surprisingly enough. Having gone rogue from the Future Foundation to give the inmates a chance to redeem themselves, she figures herself a savior of the broken and damned. However, she decides that only the purest of the lot could survive the temptations presented in the game, and thus a new session was created.
* MadnessMantra: Youcan'tyoucan'tyoucan'tyoucan't!
** Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!
** On her Relationships Page: SINNER SINNER SINNER SINNER
* NeverMyFault: Despite everything, she never seems to blame herself for her plan unraveling and screams at the other survivors to vote to get ''themselves'' executed, as they were too eager to figure out what happened to them.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: She does a ''complete 180'' after her cover's been blown- from a mild and soft-spoken girl to a rueful, silver tongued young woman who mocks and insults the surviving inmates.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: In her Mastermind robes.
* TheSocialDarwinist: She believes only the most 'pure' of the SHSL Despair students will be able to survive the Prison Life of Mutual Killing.
* TokenEvilTeammate: Of the Future Foundation.
* VagueAge: She certainly passed for a teenager, and three years have passed since the initial tests, but as a member of the Future Foundation she could be ''older'' than the other inmates...
* [[SexyPriest Sexy Nun]]: We never really got to see Etsuko in full, since she and the other inmates were only represented by icons of their heads. But when we finally get to see a full picture, she's ''gorgeous''.
* WalkingSpoiler
* WellIntentionedExtremist: The Future Foundation thought that they were too far from grace, but Etsuko saw to it that they could be redeemed... by going against the Foundation and creating the Despair Game.
* VillainousBreakdown: After being found out, her composure whittles away until she's left screaming and clawing at the podium.
