!Denizens of Atlatan
[[folder: Lords]]
The rulers of the Atlatan continent who form the surrounding Chaos into Crests from which they can draw their powers. Although the Lords were originally intended to battle Chaos, the fact that Crests can be strengthened by taking another's Crest has resulted in the internecine warfare that grips the continent.
----
* AdvantageBall: Several special Crest powers are focused on battlefield factors, enabling a Lord to strengthen his soldiers' morale, make them crazed berserkers, or even as simple as directing their maneuvers.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: Those not given Crests via gift or inheritance gained them this way, defeating opposing Lords in battle and building the power of their Crests in the process, so small surprise that several of the strongest Lords got there by being capable of kicking lots of ass on their way to the top.
* BlueBlood: All Lords are viewed as this, but there's a certain snobbery among the Lords whose Crests have been passed down for generations and are not merely upstarts who have come into power recently due to a successful conquest or two.
* ComesGreatResponsibility: As Crests were originally created to give humankind a chance of fighting back against Chaos, Lords are expected to be at the forefront of fighting against incursions of Chaos wherever they appear. Needless to say, this takes a back seat the vast majority of the time in favor of political struggles among the Lords.
* FictionalGenevaConventions: The Lords' Code, which provides for proper codes of conduct among the Lords and governs their relationships with each other and their contracted mages. In particular, it prohibits certain uses of Chaos in warfare that amount to war crimes in this setting. Lords who violate this or associated treaties can lose the services of their contracted mages, who are entitled to void their contracts with their Lords in such event.
* KlingonPromotion: Happens rather often in this setting. Several states are merely ruled by whatever Lord came along and knocked off the previous one, claiming his or her Crest and lands in the process. More prevalent among the petty Lords and their day-to-day squabbles, as the major Lords are generally all affiliated with either the Alliance or the Union, but certainly not something terribly uncommon among the latter.
* MagicKnight: All Lords are this, capable of using their Crest to infuse their weaponry and armor with increased power. The more powerful Lords bring special and unique Crest powers to the fore as well.
* OneManArmy: The common perception of Lords. Varies depending on the power of that particular Lord's Crest but the more powerful ones definitely fall into this category, being capable of destroying dozens of your average foot soldier with ease.
* PositionOfLiteralPower: The most powerful Lords politically are also those with the strongest Crests; the size of one's Crest is directly correlated with court rank. And given that the larger one's Crest, the greater the Lords' power, they fall firmly within this trope. Especially the case among Lords who have inherited powerful Crests from their forefathers.
* RankUp: The general goal of most Lords to defeat their fellow Lords in order to claim their Crest and lands and increase their court rank as a result. The given ranks we've seen in the series start with lowly knights capable of contracting with one mage to baron, viscount, earl, duke, and culminating in archduke, which is the title held by the leaders of the Alliance and Union.
* SuperEmpowering: Lords can spread the power of their Crest among their followers. The promise of a subsidiary Crest as a reward is a common way to motivate soldiers in this setting. Only truly powerful Lords with expansive Crests are those capable of governing large territories as a result, needing to spread their Crest power among more followers to maintain their rule.
* SupportPartyMember: The other role of a Lord. At a relatively low court rank, they gain an ability called a "Flag", a AreaOfEffect buff that they can use to improve the forces under their command in battle.
* VictorGainsLosersPowers: The primary source of conflict among the Lords. Whether voluntarily via surrender or forcibly through death, the Crests of defeated Lords are granted to the victorious Lord, who uses it to strengthen his or her Crest. As Crests are the source of all of a Lord's power, this naturally provokes vicious competition between the Lords as a result. Also the source of the common refrain to a defeated Lord, of which Siluca provides the first instance in Episode 1:
-->'''Siluca''': Your Crest, or your life? Which will you choose?

[[folder: Mages]]
The wielders of magic hailing from the magical city of Elam. Trained in a magical academy and then contracted to Lords upon the completion of their training.
----
* AncientConspiracy: [[spoiler: According to Siluca, possibly the actors behind the Great Hall Tragedy that claimed the two archdukes of the Alliance and Union and ruined a chance of peace on the continent via the formation of the Grancrest.]]
** [[spoiler: Later shown to be exactly the case and even an longstanding conspiracy led by Pandora, an organization nestled within the Mage Academy whose goal is to prevent the formation of the Grancrest and TheMagicGoesAway. The entire system of Lords vying together is to keep them controlled and in a state of constant warfare, Pandora eliminating the more prominent contenders to become Emperor and form the Grancrest in order to maintain the status quo.]]
* BlackMagic: Magic that trucks with demons and other manifestations of Chaos is not condoned by the Mage Academy or most mages; such so-called Dark Witches are hunted down and dealt with brutally by the Mage Academy. [[spoiler: While it is true that this is only a front and they have few qualms about working with demon-summoning witches, Aishela notes that they also don't want the coming of the Ultimate Chaos, merely wishing to maintain the status quo to prevent the loss of their magic.]]
* CourtMage: What all contracted mages are, serving their assigned Lord and being an important part of their court as a chief adviser.
* ElementalPowers: The method in which most magic manifests, mages being capable of summoning fire, manipulating the earth, and similar as offensive spells.
* HypercompetentSidekick: Given the venality and incompetence of a good chunk of Lords in this setting, their contracted mage(s) end up being this in several cases.
* KnightTemplar: The Mage Academy is very enthusiastic about wiping out magic users who use forbidden Chaos magic, although it leads Siluca [[spoiler: to wonder as to their motives in doing so as she notes the Mage Academy officials being a little too enthusiastic to burn Yana without a formal trial. Given that Yana was a member of Pandora, it appears that this was merely a cover to silence Yana before she revealed the Mage Academy's complicity.]]
* MagicWand: All mages wield one in order to channel their abilities, from as dramatic as cones of fire to as mundane as being the conduit to send messages to another wand. [[spoiler: Turns out to be a form of SinisterSurveillance as the Mage Academy can listen in and determine the location of every mage through their wands, so the standardization of wands was very deliberate. The loyal mages in the Imperial Army who refuse to back the Mage Academy when it declares war on the Lords break their wands as a sign of their defiance.]]
* MagicalIncantation: Mages are trained to activate their magic this way; their incantations usually are flowery lines describing the action they are about to perform, the length thereof often dependent on the sophistication of the spell.
* MundaneUtility: In a medieval setting, mage wands serve as a seamless means of communication, being capable of sending live voice messages over long distances.
* NGOSuperpower: The Mage Academy, powerful enough to keep Elam independent and to dictate codes of conduct among the Lords for the services of mages. Recognition of a Lord's court rank by the Mage Academy is viewed as a clear and binding determination. [[spoiler: And when they openly show their colors as the perpetrators of the Great Hall Tragedy, they are a force formidable enough to vie with the combined Imperial Army formed from the Alliance, Union, and Treaty forces, albeit aided by defections from the aforementioned as well as after weakening them with saboteurs.]]
* ThePurge: [[spoiler: The Mage Academy engages in this when it becomes clear that they must openly war against the Lords to prevent Theo from forming the Grancrest. In Elam, hit squads are sent to kill any Lords and mages who won't declare their loyalty to the Mage Academy and Artist saboteurs are activated throughout the Alliance, Union, and Treaty forces to weaken the new Imperial Army formed from their combined forces.]]
* SquishyWizard: The vast majority of mages are a GlassCannon on the battlefield, eschewing armor in favor of robes and relying on powerful spells to destroy enemies before they can draw close.
* TheStrategist: Aside from their magical abilities, mages are most often this to the Lords they are contracted with, being capable of advising on domestic and foreign affairs. More skilled mages such as Siluca and Terius are accomplished military strategists and tacticians and the most powerful Lords such as Villar can have an entire corps of contracted mages, each with different administrative responsibilities.
* SummonMagic: Mages can contract with supernatural creatures born of Chaos who can come to their aid. On the more benign side, we have Lord Balgary, a cait sith who interacts with Siluca, and on the more horrific are Chaos demons who respond to the summons of Dark Witches and the like.
* TrainingTheGiftOfMagic: The goal of the Mage Academy and while there are other schools of magic in the setting, the Mage Academy is by far the most prolific in terms of nurturing and producing users of magic.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Artists]]
Powerful fighters that in lieu of forming a Crest or being able to wield magic, imbue the power of Chaos into their very bodies to gain a variety of abilities.
----
* ChromeChampion: Some Artists can use their abilities to harden their skin like steel and become immune to most conventional weaponry, although in the one instance we see of this, the user's eyes are not so protected.
* MarkedChange: Although not universal, most of the time an Artist invoking his or her ability is shown by the tattoo on their body spreading in response or their appearance otherwise changing.
* OurMonstersAreDifferent: Supernatural people in this setting are invariably Artists whose powers manifest in unique ways, the most prominent examples being [[OurWerewolvesAreDifferent lycanthropy]] and [[OurVampiresAreDifferent vampirism]].
* PowerTattoo: One of the telltale signs of an Artist and signifying the Chaos within them.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Those Artists that double as supernatural people often have this, as werewolves, for instance, can transform any part of their body into that of a wolf without having to transform their entire body.

!Main Characters
[[folder: Theo Cornaro]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_main.png]]
-> '''Voiced by''': Kentaro Kumagai (Japanese), Creator/BrandonWinckler (English)

The main protagonist. A wandering knight who obtained a Crest from a Chaos Core. He comes from Sistina, a village ravaged by Chaos and oppressed by their Lord, Viscount Phederico Rossini. After [[RedundantRescue rescuing Siluca from soldiers]] and telling her his goal to free his hometown, he becomes contracted to her and together they fight to stop the feuding Lords and end the Chaos era.
----
* AdvantageBall: One of his Crest powers is to imbue each of his followers with his flag on their body to raise their morale.
* BadassCape: [[spoiler:After is decided he will become Emperor, he receives an impressive red one.]]
* BadassLongcoat: Since his first appearance, his green coat with yellow trim has been part of his staple attire, including while kicking ass on the battlefield.
* BaitAndSwitch: It initially appears that he will allow [[spoiler:the rage of his followers and his own resentments to cloud his judgment in negotiations with the Rossini remnants after defeating their forces in the field]], but he ultimately accepts [[spoiler:Juzel's offer to pledge his loyalty to him and end the conflict without further bloodshed, much to Siluca's relief.]]
* BattleCouple: He eventually hooks up with Siluca during their time fighting together, [[spoiler: asking her to ultimately return to his hometown in Sistina after the fighting is concluded as his wife]].
* TheChainsOfCommanding: From the beginning, Theo understands that leadership is a responsibility, not a privilege, but he is really forced to confront that belief [[spoiler:when Priscilla dies.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Theo started out as a wandering lord with only his goal to rule his homeland and defeat the Rossini's for killing his father. After meeting Siluca and gaining more allies, he realizes that it's not just his own goal that matters but what his allies consider good as well. He even manages to put aside some of his hatred for the Rossini's after associating with Juzel.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: He's been on the opposite side of the battlefield from a good number of the members of his household who have sworn loyalty to him after meeting Theo and growing attached to his ideals or his general magnanimity in victory.
* TheExile: He went into exile because he was unable to forgive the villagers for his father's death. He returns years later to liberate Sistina from its oppressors.
* FantasyCounterpartCulture: In the Atlatan map (which is totally not based on Europe), Sistina is based on Italy (Sicily to be specific). Jokes about [[LatinLover his smoothness when it comes to Siluca]] were made.
* FighterMageThief: Among the initial trio of Siluca, Irvin, and himself, Theo is the fighter, focusing on close quarters combat and using his shield to absorb enemy assaults as Siluca and Irvin use their abilities to destroy enemy soldiers en mass.
* {{Foil}}:
** To Marrine. While Theo is a peasant-born lord driven by his quest for peace and the love he has for Siluca, Marrine is a princess of pure royal blood who forsakes her happiness and love for Alexis to focus on her goals for conquest. [[spoiler:Theo's RelationshipUpgrade with Siluca and Marrine's loveless affair with Milza even sediments how opposite they are.]]
** Also to Milza. While both are warrior lords seeking to unite the continent, Theo leads through charisma and example, causing people to join him willingly, while Milza only cares for slaughter and subjugation. [[spoiler:This is exemplified in an episode where both of them seek to take a major city in the same episode. Theo talks the lord of his target city into defecting without ever drawing his sword. Milza walks into the other lord's throne room and singlehandedly massacres the entire court.]]
* FriendToAllChildren: Acts like a father figure to Emma and Luna after their mother is murdered by Yana and is extremly loyal to them.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: From a mere commoner who's gone into exile, to [[spoiler:the leader of one of the strongest coalitions in the continent. Marrine actively contemplates at several turns if she committed a significant misstep by denying his request to join the Alliance and pushing him into the Union's arms as a result.]]
* GoodIsNotSoft: He always chooses the path that will result in less casualties but will fight if he has to. This mindset doesn't sit well with [[MurderIsTheBestSolution Milza]], who views Theo as hopelessly naive and a cause of the age of Chaos continuing.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Played with. Although his main offensive weapon is a longsword, the one he most consistently relies upon and uses as the chief part of his personal battle style is his shield and accompanying armored gauntlet.
* HopeBringer: From the start, his vision of a world at peace plays a major role in his ability to win allies, and his kindness to his subjects rapidly wins them over. Even his Flag, "the Patriot", does this, making the morale of troops under his command virtually unshakeable even against the worst possible odds.
%%* IdiotHair
* InnocentlyInsensitive: He muses that Siluca "really is a mage" in response to her discomfort with emotional intimacy. He doesn't know that mages are often stereotyped as unfeeling.
* ItsPersonal:
** He has a very good reason for hating the Rossini family. [[spoiler:His father created a secret grain barn for the people of their town. But when the Rossini found out, the townsfolk betrayed him and he was executed as an example.]] HiddenDepths indeed.
** This trope is also in effect when he [[spoiler:accepts an one-on-one duel against Milza, which Siluca notes is out-of-character for him. After he wins, he tells her such a thing will never happen again because there isn't any other person he wants to kill personally due to their clashing ideals.]]
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Many have noticed that his true skill is in the shield rather than the sword. Best seen in the manga where he spars with [[BattleButler Irvin]]: while Theo couldn't even scratch him, he managed to block all of Irvin's attacks. [[spoiler: Later receives an upgrade courtesy of the Mage Association following Theo's capture of Yana; his enhanced shield proves capable of absorbing even Milza's blows with ease.]]
* MagicKnight: As with all Lords, he can use his Crest to enhance his weaponry, armor, and shield.
* MagneticHero: It helps that he's shown to be genuinely competent after he makes decisions in his own right when Siluca shows him more deference, but he has hell of a knack for accruing followers through his generosity, compassion, and willingness to share his vision of a land at peace. Practically all of his household members join for this reason and [[spoiler: his ability to rally aid from the common people is noted by Siluca and Milza to be his defining trait as a military commander]].
* MeaningfulRename: He's a commoner born with no family name. At Siluca's suggestion he adopts the surname Cornaro, the name of an ancient hero of his homeland Sistina, as a declaration that he intends to liberate it from the Rossinis.
* NervesOfSteel: Theo rarely loses his cool, regardless of the situation. The only times when this was subverted were when [[SinkOrSwimMentor Siluca suddenly summoned a monster to help level up his Crest]], when he comes face-to-face with [[BerserkButton Rossini]] and when [[spoiler:Villar dies]]. Even then, he doesn't go over-the-top with his emotions.
* NiceGuy: He's kind and respectful to everyone. He protects Siluca from soldiers without even knowing her and is always TheGoodKing to the common folk he rules over and encounters.
* ObliviousToLove: Downplayed. [[spoiler:He vaguely notices that Siluca has feelings for him but initially shrugged them off as his imagination. Later he brings it up when they're alone, which results in a BigDamnKiss and a LoveConfession]].
* RankUp: As he defeats demons and opposing Lords, his Crest increases his power and so does his court rank. By the time he enters into Villar's service, he has the rank of viscount. [[spoiler: Following his conquest of Sistina and defeat of Yana, the Mage Association recognizes him as an earl, namely the Earl of Sistina.]]
** [[spoiler: Following his defeat of Milza and ascension to leader of the Altirk Treaty, he earns the rank of duke.]]
* RedundantRescue: How he meets Siluca, who as a very powerful mage, had no need of Theo's help against normal soldiers accosting her on the road.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Against the Rossini family that rules his native Sistina [[spoiler: and killed his father. Subverted in the end when he permits Juzel Rossini to pledge his loyalty to him instead of massacring the remaining Rossini family members and loyalists, although he does demand that the family patriarch Phederico Rossini be executed for his past crimes.]]
* StoneWall: A master of defensive combat, both in person and as an army commander. The former leads him to specialize in VictoryByEndurance, while the latter helps make him the most formidable general in the series.
* ThunderboltIron: What the Mage Association claims the new shield they provided to him is made out of. [[spoiler: It proves its worth against Milza.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: He credits Siluca with almost all his achievements, and submitted to Villar on the condition that he could still be with her.
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: His kindness and charisma makes him well liked not only by his supporters, but by the common folk as well.
* VictoryByEndurance: Jiving with his defensive-minded fighting style, he opts for this strategy against more skilled and powerful opponents, asserting that this is how he fights as his opponent flails against his defense. [[spoiler: Most prominently, he bests Dorni Rossini after the latter exhausts himself against Theo's defense and is demoralized by his surrounding troops being routed.]]
** [[spoiler:He does the same during his duel against Milza, both in personal combat and as a larger strategy. Milza, an incredible combatant, has been fighting non-stop to reach him against but grows exhausted as Theo uses his defense to prolong the battle and is finally demoralized when he realizes that his army has been defeated while he was absorbed fighting Theo. Theo then quickly disarms Milza and executes him once it's clear he won't surrender.]]
* WorthyOpponent: Marrine meets him in person to take his measure after [[spoiler: Villar's death]]. She immediately marks him as one of her most dangerous enemies.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Siluca Meletes]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_main_5.png]]
-> '''Voiced by''': Creator/AkariKitou (Japanese), Creator/JeannieTirado (English)

The female protagonist. A 17-year old Mage prodigy who graduated from six out seven magic faculties at the Magic Academy of Eram. She was to contract Villar Constance but due to [[ChivalrousPervert the rumours]] surrounding the 'Lustful Earl' as well as her own hate towards the power-hungry Lords, she immediately forms a contract with Theo after realising that he was different from them.
----
* TheAce: She's considered a mage prodigy, skilled in magic, political affairs, and military strategy.
* ACupAngst: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] with Siluca. She doesn't care that much about it but wasn't happy to hear Aishela comment on her 'lack of growth' during the FuroScene. [[SkinshipGrope Being groped against her will]] might also have to do with that.
* AgentScully: Siluca discounts the scriptures of the Order of the Crest as convenient fairy tales, something that fuels her initial antagonism toward Priscilla. [[spoiler:She eventually is proven wrong when it turns out that Priscilla was indeed the Holy Grail.]]
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: As a mage, she was ridiculed due to her ability to manipulate Chaos until she was adopted by Aubestes.
* BadassCape: She wears a long white cape as part of her uniform.
* BattleCouple: She eventually starts a relationship with Theo during their time fighting together.
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: Siluca is extremely beautiful and a pure soul.
* CharacterDevelopment: Siluca originally completely hated the Order of the Crest for its religion and conflicts with the Mage's Association, but meeting Priscilla made her get past most of her hatred and see that while the Order is flawed, it's the people in it that truly matter.
* FighterMageThief: The mage of the starting trio between she, Theo, and Irvin.
* FriendToAllChildren: Acts like a mother figure to Emma and Luna after Yana murders their mother Clara, and just like Theo is very loyal to them.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: While she is arrogant and dismissive of the Order of the Crest, she has a pure heart as she cares deeply for her allies and Theo who she extremely loves.
* HypercompetentSidekick: Early on, Siluca is a highly accomplished mage, serving the rookie Lord Theo. She gets [[WhatTheHellHero called out]] on this, as it's clear to everyone that Theo's something of a PuppetKing and it's Siluca who is getting all the credit for his victories. It's only later that Theo starts acting like a Lord in his own right.
* IdiotHair: Has a prominent ahoge, although subverted in that she's one of the most intelligent and competent characters in the entire story.
* JackOfAllTrades: She can use almost every type of magic. So far, she's demonstrated:
** BlindedByTheLight: She can emit a bright light from her wand to blind opponents.
** DeflectorShields: Can guard against physical attacks, ranging from close-range weapons to a storm of arrows.
** DishingOutDirt: Capable of forming walls of earth to crowd enemy soldiers for her area-of-effect magic.
** PlayingWithFire: Bringing down giant fireballs on her opponents is well within her capabilities.
** ProjectileSpell: She can infuse her wand with a large amount of magic and fire it as a missile. [[spoiler: She uses this to cancel out Yana's equivalent desperation spell.]]
** ShockAndAwe: Her preferred form of attack.
** SummonMagic: Summoned a chaos creature to attack Theo and allow him to increase the power of his Crest. She can also summon Lord Balgary, who uses CastingAShadow magic to aid her.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She is TheUnfettered when it comes to her goals, a bit arrogant and forceful about her schemes with a tendency of leaving people out of them until the last minute, and she's also dismissive of the Order of the Crest. However, she is kind, always polite and [[WellIntentionedExtremist ultimately has the best of intentions with her actions]]. Her dislike of the Order is also caused by the friction between the Mage's Association and the Order, as Mages view Crests as a manifestation of the user's will while the Order views them as a gift from god that should be controlled by the Order.
* KindHeartedCatLover: She melts when it comes to Sir Balgary. That's even what made Theo realise that she has a HiddenHeartOfGold.
* LightIsGood: She's frequently seen wearing a white uniform and despite some militaristic and pragmatic tendencies, she's ultimately shown to be very moral and steadfast in following Theo because of his vision for a land at peace.
* MasterOfNone: The witches point out to her that because she's a JackOfAllTrades magically, she lacks significant power in any particular magical school.
* ObliviousToLove: Downplayed. She's not really oblivious as she is uncertain. Despite all the hints he's been giving her, she wasn't sure of [[spoiler:Theo's feelings for her.]] Lampshaded by [[spoiler:Theo himself]].
* PurpleIsPowerful: Her purple eyes are good indicators of her prowess with magic.
* TheStrategist: In addition to her abilities as a mage, she's an accomplished military and political strategist despite her age. She orchestrates Theo's rise and his political stance toward their neighboring countries and continues in this role when she enters Villar's service, being the architect of Villar's successful military campaign en route to the Union Lords' Congress. [[spoiler:She reprises this role on Theo's behalf in Sistina, laying the groundwork for the Rossini family's fall.]]
* StillWearingTheOldColors: Still wears the {{stripperiffic}} outfit that was issued to her for Villar's service, ''long'' after she's joined Theo for keeps, much to Aishela's delight.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: The outfit she got for the contract with Villar shows her belly and has a short skirt.
-->'''Siluca''': And don't even get me started on this trash uniform!
* SupportingProtagonist: At the beginning of the series, she has the most influence in the series, directing Theo's political and military stance as he grows his power base as a Lord, but it's all to set up Theo as the true main protagonist.
* TearsOfJoy: When Villar makes an offer to Theo to make him leader of Sevis at the cost of giving up Siluca to him, Theo refuses and instead makes a counter-offer to pledge himself to Villar as a lowly knight solely so he may keep Siluca as his mage, proclaiming that she is too important to him. As soon as she hears this, she runs off to an isolated corner of the castle and ''[[https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E942CdGOw-g/WyKXHlQRLWI/AAAAAAAEUIc/2NNDvbWaf9EL3bKUH-8_P2GSjFbcUyt3ACHMYCw/s0/018.jpg sobs]]'' in joy. Lassic has to explain to Theo that what he just said to Villar was probably the most precious thing she could have heard.
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler: Asserts that this will be the result if Theo doesn't keep the promise he made to her to survive the coming conflict over the fate of the continent.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: To Theo, after becoming his mage, she will follow and support Theo to the very end. Later on, it becomes more personal as she develops feelings for him, to which he reciprocates these feelings as he deeply loves her.
* TheUnfettered: Played with. She's militaristic and pragmatic, preferring force as a straightforward strategy when warranted and during Theo's rise, she holds few compunctions against selling his services to either the Alliance or the Union wherever it might help Theo. But she does have scruples and is ultimately shown to be a firm believer in Theo's peaceful vision for the continent, which extends to furthering his TheGoodKing traits to help his popularity among the common people.
* UnwantedRescue: When Theo shows up, Siluca tells him that she didn't need to be rescued, as dealing with a group of foot soldiers would have been trivial for her.
* UptownGirl: Shades of this, as Siluca grew up in the cosmopolitan city of Elam, the heart of magic on the continent, whereas Theo is from a relative backwater in Sistina and a smaller village therein to boot.
* {{Warhawk}}: Although she's not bloodthirsty or unduly aggressive, she often finds herself espousing these views over more peaceful alternatives. After Margaret leaves, Siluca is the most militaristic of Villar's advisers aside from Milza and has to be reprimanded by Laura when she goes too far in insisting on battle as a course of action.
* YouAreWhatYouHate: She is well aware that selfish mages like her are the problem with Atlatan. Years of training in the Academy only solidified her certainty that she wants to get as far away from it and anything it influences as possible- so she joins up with [[TheConscience Theo]].

!Theo's Household
As Theo becomes a Lord and increases his rank and holdings, he accrues a number of powerful and notable followers.
----
[[folder: Irvin]]
[[quoteright:320:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_main_1.png]]
-> '''Voiced by''': Creator/YuuichiNakamura (Japanese), Creator/AlanLee (English)

A former butler and chamberlain of the Kreische family, now serving as Siluca's servant to atone for what he believes was his error in stopping her from possibly averting the Great Hall Tragedy that killed the two archdukes. An Artist, he utilizes the power of Chaos to enhance his speed and strength and is a skilled assassin.
----
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Is capable of diagnosing his opponents with pinpoint accuracy quickly, multitasking, and planning ahead in battle. [[spoiler:Noted by Boltz, who realizes that Irvin has been accumulating Boltz's poison on his blades during their parries to use against him.]]
* BadassInANiceSuit: Although Irvin has a more practical outfit for battle, he's perfectly capable of fighting with his trademark agility in a full suit when called upon.
* BattleButler: He's a butler and assassin as well.
* BraidsOfAction: Has a very long one, and is a damn good fighter and assassin.
* FighterMageThief: The thief to Theo's fighter and Siluca's mage of the three initial allies at the start of the story.
* MyGreatestFailure: Being unable to prevent the Great Hall Tragedy made him swore allegiance to Siluca as a way for atonement.
* PowerTattoo: Has one on his shoulder as an Artist but unlike Aishela's, his doesn't change or expand when he's using his powers.
* ServileSnarker: He's unfailingly loyal to Siluca but doesn't hesitate to snark at her for some of the sticky situations she finds herself in.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Siluca, she is his master and he will risk his life if it means saving her.

An adoptive sister of Siluca at the mage academy, Aishela is an Artist called upon by Siluca to aid her and Theo against their foes.
----
* AmbiguouslyBi: Has the hots for Siluca and takes every opportunity to feel her up but also forcefully kissed Petr on the battlefield and calls him cute before trying to kill him.
* BattleCry: To emphasize her valkyrie theme:
-->'''Aishela''': I'll guide you to the afterlife!
%%* BloodKnight:
* BroughtDownToBadass: [[spoiler:Priscilla removes her Chaos mark to save her life, but Aishela loses her Artist powers in the process. She's still willing to fight in order to protect Siluca, and still able to shove her polearm straight through plate mail through her own unassisted strength.]]
* ForcefulKiss: She gives one to Petr while trying to choke him to death.
* {{Geas}}: [[spoiler:The organization Pandora implanted a geas on her Chaos mark so she was forced to assassinate Siluca and Theo or she will die. When she intentionally fails, the curse activates and would have died then and there had Priscilla not removed her mark.]]
* HappilyAdopted: Despite her disagreements with Aubestes, she fondly remembers being adopted by him.
* LightningBruiser: Incredibly strong when channeling her abilities and she can tear through rank-and-file soldiers like paper.
* TheMole: [[spoiler: For the Mage Academy and specifically its secretive Pandora faction, which recruits dropouts from the Mage Academy and other displaced individuals to maintain the status quo and prevent the formation of the Grancrest. Ever since Theo and Siluca began their rise to power together, Aishela has been informing Pandora of all of their actions and movements.]]
* OnlyOneName: Despite being Siluca's adoptive sister, she doesn't go by the Meletes surname because she considers Aubestes permitting the Mage Academy principal to possibly kill Siluca due to her breaking of the rules to be an unforgivable act.
* PowerTattoo: Along with FacialMarkings, one of the signs of being an Artist. The tattoos deepen and expand when she utilizes her abilities to enhance her speed and power.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Waist-length purple hair, and has the biggest brute force on the group.
* SinisterScythe: One of the weapons that can be formed from her modular spear.
* {{Valkyries}}: The main theme of her battle outfit from the wings on her helmet to her choice of weapon.
* TheWorfEffect: Is the main casualty of Theo's first battle against Waldlind to show that the Waldlind knights are an entirely different class of enemy than what Theo's seen before. Aishela, who previously looked invincible against foot soldiers, is able to hold her own against the Waldlind knights for a time and even slaughter a few but she's eventually overwhelmed by their use of Crest bullets and critically injured before being saved by Priscilla's healing abilities.

An independent Lord in the Savis region who engages with Theo and Siluca upon the former's ascension to lordship and becomes one of Theo's loyal followers upon his defeat.
----
* BadassCape: His fabulous red cape with fur trim is likely the most distinctive part of his attire and flows magnificently behind him as he's kicking ass.
* TheBigGuy: Large and in charge, he's one of the most formidable conventional fighters among Theo's household, even managing to wound Milza Kuces during a skirmish between the Dartanian occupation and the Altirk Treaty resistance (narrowly avoiding being beheaded himself in the process).
* BigOlEyebrows: His eyebrows are thick and slightly bushy, which makes him look more expressive.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: After being defeated by Theo, he pledges himself to his cause, and has remained loyal since.
* AFatherToHisMen: The guy truly cares about the men under his command.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: He's implied to have continued to conduct military campaigns after he takes command of Savis and the story switches to Theo's exploits in Villar's service. When the Alliance gears up for war against Altirk, Villar gives Lassic the freedom to attack Alliance holdings at will and Lassic manages to conquer the neighboring state of Ozerl with ease.
* UndyingLoyalty: [[spoiler: The Altirk Treaty Lords unanimously elect him as their leader, but he remains resolutely loyal to Theo and is insistent he will cede leadership once Theo proves his mettle to the other Lords.]]
* YouAreInCommandNow: When [[spoiler:Theo becomes Villar's knight, he receives all his holdings.]]

----
* BrainyBrunette: Brown hair and is a much better planner than his liege.
* DeadpanSnarker: Often, especially to Lassic.
* {{Invisibility}}: Uses this magic to attempt a sneak attack on Siluca after she's occupied fighting his troops.
* MagicKnight: Distinguishes himself from his mage peers by wielding a sword in battle in an attempt to avert being a SquishyWizard, something that gives him the initial advantage in his fight against Siluca.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Frequently abrasive but he genuinely cares about Lassic and his cause and later dutifully serves Theo and Siluca in furthering their interests.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: His expression when Lassic informs him [[spoiler:they are going to take on the Cyclops without an army]].
* UndyingLoyalty: To Lassic. He's ready to give up his life as Theo and Siluca's hostage to allow Lassic to continue fighting before being shocked that Lassic is willing to surrender on his behalf. 241A priest of the Order of the Crest who joins Theo's forces when she claims to be led by a vision to his side.
----
* CheeryPink: Although she doesn't wear pink, her pink hair and unfailingly chipper and affable personality fall straight into this trope. She almost never takes Siluca's badgering about her religious beliefs personally and earnestly tries to proselytize Theo and Siluca on behalf of her Order constantly.
* ChekhovsGun: Turns out that her Crest, as a possible derivative of the Grancrest that will end the age of Chaos when it accepts all Crests, can also take in all forms of Chaos. [[spoiler: This proves critical in saving Aishela's life after the latter's {{Geas}} starts killing her after she refuses to kill Theo and Siluca and Priscilla's absorbs Aishela's Artist powers into her Crest.]]
* FaceDeathWithDignity: [[spoiler:Knowing she will likely die if she confronts her Order's fake Pope, she nevertheless chooses to do her duty, even refusing a chance to be saved by Irvin.]]
* LivingMacGuffin: As the "Holy Grail." The Crest that appears when she uses her healing abilities is noted to be shaped differently than other members of her order. According to the teachings of the Order of the Crest, should a Holy Grail be given all the Crests of the world, a god will descend and end the age of Chaos. Theo notes the similarities between this tale and the formation of the Grancrest.
* TheMedic: As a priest with healing abilities, she serves as this for the group.
* MessianicArchetype: The Maiden of the Holy Grail. [[spoiler: She allows herself to be murdered to reveal the truth of the Grail to the Order, and to pass it on to Theo.]]
* ProphetEyes: When receiving revelations from the One God, and on several occasions, using her healing powers on the wounded, she enters a trance-like state where her eyes become dull and pale in color. Her tone and behavior changes as well, becoming more serious and monotonous.
* RedBaron: The "Holy Grail of Farnese," referring to the unique Crest she was born with and her status as the daughter of the founder of the Order of the Crest.
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler:Her death sets the stage for rest of the Order to ally with Theo]].
* {{Seers}}: Despite being a priest, she said some oddly prophetic things when healing Irvin after a battle and seems to go into a trance from time to time to comment on the fate of the people she heals.
* TakeUpMySword: [[spoiler:Her last act is to give up the Holy Grail to Theo and ask him to continue her mission.]]
* ThanatosGambit: [[spoiler:Allows herself to be killed by the fake Pope to rally the Order's followers to her cause and give the Holy Grail to Theo.]]
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: [[spoiler:A genuinely kind and benevolent girl, killed by Pandora's manipulations.]]

Two werewolf twins who are the daughters of Clara, the Werewolf Queen. [[spoiler: After Theo saves them from Yana and Clara dies in the process, they join Theo's household.]]
----
* BadassAdorable: They're a pair of cute but very powerful werewolf sisters that fight alongside Irvin.
* CombinationAttack: Skilled at these, [[spoiler: much to Yana's chagrin]].
* CuteBruiser: Their adorable appearances are juxtaposed against their brutality in combat, as they rip out the throats of armed soldiers with ease in their werewolf forms and inform their opponents in no uncertain language of how they're going to tear them apart.
* DoubleJump: The goal of one of their [[CombinationAttack combination attacks]]. While both in wolf form, one sister jumps on the back of the other, after which the bottom sister will propel both of them upward and allow the top sister use her as a platform to achieve a bigger jump. [[spoiler: They use this to bypass Yana's powerful summoned demon and deal her a deep wound.]]
* IdenticalTwinIDTag: They're differentiated by the color of their clothes and respective earrings (Emma wears pink and has sun earrings while Luna wears blue and has moon earrings).
* LittleBitBeastly: They usually manifest their werewolf powers with the ears and claws of a wolf.
* OurWerewolvesAreDifferent: Werewolves are Artists whose powers manifest as lycanthropy. Emma and Luna can partially transform their bodies as well as take a full wolf form.
* NinjaMaid: Are trained as maids and servants by Irvin, who they take a shine to. And even in their maid uniforms, they're capable of transforming and going on the warpath, as the Rossini assassins at the Lords' Congress experienced to their detriment.
* TheNoseKnows: Courtesy of their werewolf powers. They instantly recognize Yana's scent when she comes close to Theo's battle with Dorni Rossini.
* SiblingTeam: They always fight together.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Theo and Siluca, as they are like second parents to them and even after Yana is killed, they still stay by their side and help them end the chaos era and stay in Sistina with them.
* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler:They want revenge on Yana for killing their mother Clara, the Werewolf Queen.]]

----
* HeelFaceTurn: He offers his services to [[spoiler:Theo in an attempt to follow his father's wishes and preserve his life and the Rossini name]] but over the course of their negotiations, he comes to [[spoiler:genuinely believe in Theo's cause]].
* PragmaticVillainy: His defining trait. He openly opines on [[spoiler:the sustainability of the Rossini family's tyranny over Sistina and regretfully remarks that it's too late for them to change their stripes]].
* SiblingYinYang: Is entirely unlike his siblings, quiet where they are fiery and analytical and pragmatic when they are quickly roused to anger. [[spoiler: Given that he eventually joins Theo, Juzel ironically most resembles his father in temperament of the three Rossini siblings.]]
* SlaveLiberation: Offers to Theo to spark this among the slaves in Starck, drawing on his experience ruling Sistina as part of the Rossini family to illustrate both ways to crush a rebellion and to foster one. Later follows up on during the conflict between Starck and Haman, turning the Starck slaves against the Nords at a critical juncture in the battle.
* TheStoic: Remains composed and logical even in dire situations, such as [[spoiler:dealing with his father's despair once the Rossini family's rule appears to be crumbling and when Theo relays the desires of his supporters to see Juzel and his father executed]].

One of the Lassic's subbordinates and infantry commander. Later he is promoted to the lord of Bultava province.

----
* HelmetsAreHardlyHeroic: During the battle between Lassic's and Theos's forces unlike his subordinates he does not wear a helmet and he survives Aishela's assault.
* OnlyOneName: Same as other Lassic's captains of common origin, he had no surname at first. But after the battle of Altirk he took the name of the river that flows through his hometown as one.
* RagsToRoyalty: Just a common infantry captain, he received a title of the lord sometime after the liberation of Sistina as Bultava was also given to Theo by the Mages Association.
* TrapMaster: His main specialities on the field are ambushes, diversions and sneak attacks as shown during the battles with Theo and, later, Marrine forces and during the siege of Elam.

----
[[folder: In General]]
* TheEmpire: Marrine's endgame for the Alliance should she succeed in conquering the continent and has some signs of it even in the current setting. 318
The leader of the Alliance and the Margrave of Waldlind.
----
* AntiVillain: Marrine is a ruthless YoungConqueror [[WarriorPrince Warrior Princess]] who intends to rebuild TheEmpire by military force and kill anyone who refuses to swear fealty to her. She's not evil at all, just entirely too cynical; she believes that this is the most effective way to reunite the Grancrest and bring an end to the age of Chaos. Given how [[WeddingSmashers the last attempt to reunite the continent through marriage turned out]], and what a useless fop her beloved Alexis is at first, it's easy to see why she rejects the idea of defeating Chaos that way.
* BadassArmy: The commander of one. The Waldlind knights are a heavily armored, disciplined, and formidable force with UndyingLoyalty to Marrine, capable of outright crushing the vast majority of opponents they meet on the open field. Also shown to be the only military force in the story utilizing what are called Crest bullets, magic-powered crossbows capable of causing fortified castle emplacements to crumble under a volley.
* BattleBallgown: Always seen wearing a long black dress, even in battle, where she adds a suit of armor over it.
* BigDamnKiss: [[spoiler:Gives this to Alexis as she resetablishes her love for him in episode 20.]]
* TheCavalryArrivesLate: [[spoiler:She and her forces arrive way too late to aid Milza in his fight against Theo, so she retreats before the enemy forces notice their presence.]]
* TheChainsOfCommanding: Feels these constantly as a result of her position. Even when emotionally troubled by some of the actions she has to do, including fighting [[spoiler: Villar, sleeping with Milza, or deciding to war with Alexis]], she feels obligated by virtue of her status as leader of the Alliance and one capable of ending the age of Chaos to go on regardless.
* TheConqueror: Her plan for the entire continent in order to end the age of Chaos and create the Grancrest. Helps that she's shown to be a highly capable military and political leader, as well as the ruler of seemingly the most powerful military force on the continent.
* CruelToBeKind: [[spoiler:Ultimately the reason for reason for her conquest. She wanted to keep Alexis safe and out of the war, and becomes very shaken when he steps into the frontlines anyway.]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: Always dresses in black after the Great Hall Tragedy, but is not actively villainous, just the leader of the faction opposite the heroes and brutal and pragmatic about her goals.
* DefiledForever: [[spoiler:She pulls this on herself after sleeping with Milza to gain his support. Alexis, however, doesn't care one whit that she's no longer a virgin, he loves her either way and only cares that she loves him back.]]
* GroinAttack: A flashback episode shows her delivering one to an arrogant noblemen who punched out Alexis and tried to get fresh with her.
* EasilyForgiven: [[spoiler:Alexis holds no hard feelings towards her for past deeds, including giving her body up to Milza, much to her surprise.]]
* {{Foil}}: To Theo.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: She does a lot of moral questionable acts during her campain, but she makes clear several times that she isn't proud of herself for it.
* IronLady: In spades. In part since she has to act as such to keep the Alliance Lords in line and also since she believes this attitude is necessary to unite the continent.
* LieBackAndThinkOfEngland: [[spoiler: Willingly sleeps with Milza for a night in order to gain his allegiance. It's clear that she doesn't enjoy it and tears up when thinking of Alexis, but she visibly steels herself during the act and doesn't appear to hold any hard feelings for Milza after the fact, giving him a respectful farewell after his death.]]
* MightyGlacier: Not her directly but Milza mentions this as the case of her Waldlind knights, implacable in battle but slow in maneuver and not the type to safely lead a fighting retreat. [[spoiler: This forms part of Milza's decision to charge into Theo's ranks to his death to avoid having Marrine commit to a battle she might not win and possibly would be incapable of retreating from.]]
* PrettyPrincessPowerhouse: Marrine, elegant princess of the Alliance who is perhaps the most gifted political and military leader in the series. She doesn't fight much herself, but she doesn't hesitate to personally behead a traitor with her own sword - one-handed, at that.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Although stern and unyielding about her goals, she comes across as eminently reasonable and empathetic even to her enemies. When she sallies against Theo [[spoiler: after Villar's death]], they have an amicable discussion that displays their differing ideologies but practically no antipathy for each other. And while Marrine can be brutal when needed, she generally gives the Alliance Lords leeway in their domestic affairs, only [[spoiler: lightly admonishing Ulrica and Milza for not containing a slave rebellion and allowing the formation of the Altirk Treaty respectively but allowing them to set their policies in each regard]].
* RedBaron: The Black Princess. Fitting considering her regular attire and cold and distant attitude at the head of her armies.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: A princess and an army commander. If she's rarely pitted directly against Theo, it's because she's busy with other campaigns.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She's attracted to Alexis' genuinely kind heart. That said, she wishes he'd be a little less of an idiot about it and open to the consequences of their relationship.
* TheStrategist: Much of her time on screen while not in battle is her actively directing the Alliance's military and political grand strategy; while she does consult with Aubestes frequently, it's made clear that she's the main force powering the Alliance's actions, as opposed to Siluca and Theo's early relationship. Some of her more notable feats include [[spoiler: gaining the loyalty of Erik, the King of Starck, and identifying Milza as a potential asset, both of whom prove critical in Villar's defeat. She also proves as flexible politically as she is on the battlefield, inducing Dawson to defect in order to defeat the Earl of Le Couleurs, who had resisted all of her attempts to best him militarily beforehand.]]
* ToughLeaderFacade: Buries her kinder and more gentle side that she showed to Alexis in favor of sheer ruthlessness and devotion to conquering the continent. [[spoiler: When Villar notes in his dying words that he wishes she could be wed to Alexis for the sake of her happiness, she claims that she has shed any notion of ever being worthy of happiness.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: The recipient of this from her Waldlind knights. Even when it is clear that she is willing to violate the Lords' Code to win and commit what amount to war crimes even by the standards of a medieval fantasy setting, her knights remain unfailingly loyal to her.
* TheUnfettered: She's willing to do whatever it takes to become Empress, even if it means fighting against those she cares about, [[spoiler: using underhanded tricks in contravention of the Lord's Code, and sleeping with Milza to gain his allegiance]].
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Everything she does is so that [[spoiler:when she's on the cusp of achieving the Grancrest ''this'' time, the parties responsible for causing the the Great Hall Tragedy to stop it the first time are forced to act openly to stop her, exposing themselves to the public]]. If that means being a conqueror and a war criminal, so be it. And if she dies, [[spoiler:at least the world will know who killed her, so someone else can continue her work, and her beloved Alexis won't be caught up in it.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: She considered Theo too much of an idealist to consider as an ally. When his successes under the Union's wing become harder to ignore, she seriously begins to wonder if she made a mistake in rejecting him.

----
* BloodKnight: She loves to fight. When she discovers one of Villar's contracted mages, Ulrica is ecstatic she can kill her without consequences because Villar is still alive.
* BraidsOfAction: Has a waist long braid, and has the skill and strength to warrant it.
* DaddysGirl: She clearly adores her father Erik.
* DidntSeeThatComing: Because of her pride and dependance on brute force, she's completely blindsided [[spoiler:when Juzel plants seeds of rebellion among the enslaved population of Starck, forcing her to withdraw her invasion of Haman in order to quell it.]]
* FieryRedhead: Redheaded and always eager for a fight.
* IdiotHair: Although like in Theo and Siluca's case, it doesn't indicate her actual intelligence.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: She's shorter than Marrine, but carries an axe that's probably as heavy as she is.

* BloodKnight: Just like his daughter, he loves a good, bloody fight, [[spoiler: refusing to retreat when Alexis' superior formation bleeds his forces and deciding to go out in a blaze of glory covered in his enemies' blood]].
* HornyVikings: Considering were he's from, it's no surprise he has a horny helmet. He even evokes Valhalla [[spoiler: before making his final suicidal charge into the enemy ranks.]]
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler: When he makes his way onto Alexis' flagship, he's impaled on a giant bolt shot from one of the ship's scorpions but shows incredible endurance as he rips out the hook and continues trying to kill Alexis.]]
* LargeAndInCharge: He's a very big man, and the undisputed ruler of Nord.
* RasputinianDeath: Oh dear lord! [[spoiler:First he's shot with dozens of arrows, impaled with a giant crossbow bolt to the chest, stabbed with poisoned knives by Alexis' Artist servant, and he only truly dies when he's decapitated.]]
* RedBaron: "The Sea King." Fitting for the leader of a Norse-themed viking raider nation. [[spoiler: Unfortunately for him, it clouds his judgment and leads him to be far too overconfident when facing Alexis in a sea battle.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: When told by Marrine he should be cautious when facing Alexis. he says "screw it" and launches an all-out attack. 388The prince of Dartania and a formidable fighter who seeks the Lord who can unite the continent and form the Grancrest.
----
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: He's perhaps the deadliest warrior on the continent and not an incompetent general, but he really tends to underestimate his foes and overestimate his own power, [[spoiler: causing him to charge into Theo's trap in the Forest of Eternal Darkness]].
* AssassinOutclassin: Impressively pulls this off against [[spoiler: Irvin, who uses his abilities to appear right behind Milza and attempt to cut his throat while the latter is on horseback and has just fended off Aishela, Emma, and Luna. Milza blocks Irvin's attack and knocks him off his horse by contorting in his saddle such that he's hanging on with one leg and then pulls himself back onto his horse while still running at full gallop.]]
* AttackAttackAttack: A proponent of this and he disdains Theo's more defensive-minded fighting style and desire to avoid unnecessary casualties. To illustrate the difference, when Villar marches on Alliance holdings to join the Union Lords at their Congress, Theo and Milza are each shown taking a castle as part of the overall campaign: Milza slaughters the primary inhabitants of his castle and takes the Lord's Crest forcibly, whereas Theo convinces his opposing Lord to surrender without bloodshed and even swear loyalty to him personally.
** [[spoiler: This noted, he's not blind to tactical considerations and willingly withdraws his forces after he fails to kill Lassic in their first encounter and the Altirk Treaty Lords threaten to surround and overwhelm him.]]
* BadBoss: At first to Terius, frequently threatening him when Terius makes contrary remarks or tries to dissuade him from reckless courses of action, but he grows to respect Terius after the latter grows a spine and sticks by his recommendations despite Milza's recriminations.
* BadassLongRobe: Wears Arabic-inspired attire at all times, even deigning to wear it on the battlefield sans armor.
* BeardOfEvil: Has a goatee, and is amoral and bloodthirsty.
* BloodKnight: To him a good battle is one with tons of bloodshed.
* BloodSplatteredWarrior: Frequently in combat and used to show how brutal and badass he is, often emerging from a brawl with overwhelming amounts of opposition covered in his enemies' blood.
* CombatByChampion: Challenges Theo to this after he manages to bring his forces through the Forest of Eternal Darkness. Predictably, given that Theo has bled Milza's forces using skirmisher tactics during his march and Milza faces the prospect of attacking Theo's fortified castle with limited resources, Theo refuses.
* DefiantToTheEnd: [[spoiler:When Theo asks him if will surrender (although Theo casts it as merely a formality, knowing the answer as a result of this trope), Milza exclaims that he will never beg for his life. Theo stabs him afterward and in a final show of defiance, Milza attempts to rise to [[DiedStandingUp die on his feet]].]]
* DuelToTheDeath: [[spoiler:With his forces surrounded, he charges at Theo's camp to face him in a personal duel. He's defeated and Villar's Crest is recovered by Theo after killing him.]]
* EveryoneHasStandards: Despite all the blood he has shed, even he finds the [[SlaveryIsASpecialKindOfEvil Nords' ruling methods]] disagreeable.
* FatalFlaw: His love of bloodshed and refusal to back down even when faced with overwhelming odds cost him dearly [[spoiler: when his exhaustion makes him lose his duel against Theo, who takes his Crest and his life.]]
* FrontlineGeneral: He always personally leads the charge of his army.
* IFightForTheStrongestSide: The one that can unify the continent to wit, focusing his attentions on Villar. [[spoiler: After Villar refuses the leadership of the Union, he changes his allegiance to Marrine after she agrees to sleep with him to prove her dedication to uniting the continent.]]
* LightningBruiser: Very fast, capable of dancing around a huge number of enemies and dispatching them in turn before they know what's going on, as well as hitting like a truck. He can lift a man impaled on his sword with one arm from horseback and later [[spoiler: pulls off an especially impressive feat of taking a full-on attack from Aishela, whose Artist abilities allow her to tear apart infantry with ease and is this trope in her own right, and knocking her back while still being fast enough to disable Emma and Luna, who were attempting to attack his unguarded sides.]]
* TheJuggernaut: [[spoiler: Although he's ultimately unsuccessful and killed due to exhaustion at Theo's hands, he's shown to be this when he charges to kill Theo despite being vastly outnumbered by Theo's Altirk militia and the Altirk Treaty forces, as Milza makes his way through all of the aforementioned, including dealing with all of Theo's dangerous household members in individual combat, in the process.]]
* MeaningfulName: His father's name is given as Sayid. [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Walk them back through the translation errors]] and you get something interesting: in Islamic tradition a "''sayyid''" is someone said to be a male-line descendant of the Prophet Muhammad's relatives (he had no sons himself), while a "''mirza''" is a child of a ''sayyid'' mother. Dartania is visually inspired by Ottoman Turkey.
* MightMakesRight: Of this opinion. He sees the current era as an ideal time where the cream that will rise to the top are those with the ruthlessness and ambition to survive. [[spoiler: Shown as one of the primary reasons he detests Theo, who embodies the rise of the common people to power, something that Milza, who endorses the rule of great men who will emerge as Lords, cannot condone.]]
* OneManArmy: And ''how!'' This guy easily has the highest body count out of everyone in the series and is shown to be capable of sacking castles on his lonesome. [[spoiler: When he leads Dartania's naval fleet against Altirk, he leaps into battle aboard Altirk's ships and annihilates their crews single-handedly.]]
** [[spoiler:Of course, even he has limits. When he faces Theo after fighting non-stop against Theo's assembled army, consisting of vast numbers of Altirk militia as well as the Altirk Treaty forces, he's exhausted and his Crest is barely keeping him going, showing even a juggernaut like him isn't immune to getting tired.]]
* PetTheDog: After an extended bout of threatening and belittling Terius as his primary strategist, Milza eventually admits to Terius that he's changed him for the better and curbed his more destructive instincts.
* RedBaron: He becomes known as "The Black Prince" and is certainly a fitting moniker.
* ScaryScorpions: Has this theme going from the scorpion brooch in his turban to the stylized scorpion on his scimitar.
* SelfMadeOrphan: [[spoiler: Kills his own father, who he deemed too weak, to take the throne of Dartania after Milza pledges himself to Marrine's cause in order to bring Dartania to the side of the Alliance.]]
* SinisterScimitar: His weapon of choice and it fits his savage close quarters style of combat. Interestingly, he uses it even when on horseback to great effect even though it appears the size of a short sword.
* TyrantTakesTheHelm: After being installed as the new leader of Altirk by Marrine. While aware of the consequences of going too far in this respect to the extent that he rebukes Ulrica on the same subject, he eventually turns to suppressing dissent in Altirk with brutal force.
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:After fighting non-stop to reach Theo and fight him personally, he realizes that not only he's exhausted, his army has been defeated and Theo is barely tired. He barely recomposes himself before Theo plunges his sword through Milza's throat.]]
* VillainousValour: The man is ruthless and bloodthirsty, but he never shows cowardice or hesitation.
* UndyingLoyalty: [[spoiler:When he said he would be loyal to Marrine and aid her in conquering the continent should she sleep with him, he wasn't mincing words. When the Altirk forces led by Theo threaten to overwhelm Milza's Dartanian army, Milza insists on a desperate charge into the enemy ranks rather than risk Marrine's safety since the numerically inferior Waldlind reinforcements en route to relieve Milza aren't sufficient to change the outcome of the battle.]]
* WorthyOpponent: Comes to see Lassic as one after he survives an encounter against him. Notably, he refuses to extend the same courtesy to Theo, considering him an unambitious upstart.

The chief contracted mage of Marrine and Siluca's adoptive father.
----
* {{Abusive Parent|s}}: [[spoiler: He does love Siluca but he's also a ''very'' strict Mage who caused Siluca to be discriminated against and ''almost killed'' her if not for Aishela's or the university's principal's protection. Queen Marrine herself ends up feeling sorry for Siluca because the failed negotiations mean that he'll most likely have to kill her in the battlefield.]]
* CourtMage: All contracted mages are this to an extent, but Aubestes being the mage of the leader of the Alliance especially emphasizes this.
* HiddenDepths: He admits to Siluca and Aishela that he wishes he was a better father to them growing up.
** Siluca noted that after surviving the Mage Academy's attempt to execute her, Aubestes embraced her and wept uncontrollably.
** He is thankful to Aishela for taking care of Siluca and being a parental figure in his place.
* IcyGrayEyes: His gray eyes help emphasize his stoic demeanor and blind loyalty.
* PetTheDog: He hugs his adopted daughter the second time they see each other after coldly rebuking her request to join the Alliance previously.
* TheStoic: Almost never emotes on screen save for the above example, even when rejecting his daughter's request to join the Alliance.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Marrine. [[spoiler:Despite it being shown that mages are permitted to void their contracts with their Lords should their Lord in question break the Lord's Code or related treaties, he willingly assists Marrine in using a horrific poison gas attack on a castle by manipulating the surrounding Chaos. And naturally, he stays with her even after the Mage Academy declares its independence and calls all mages to its side.]]

-> '''Voiced by''': Creator/YuumaUchida (Japanese), Creator/BillyKametz (English)
One of Marrine's contracted mages and given as a servant to Milza. While he's not especially good with magic, he's a competent strategist. He constantly tries to keep his master's more damaging impulses in check.
----
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: [[spoiler:With Milza dead, he quickly drinks a bottle of poison, preferring to join his Lord in death.]]
* TheDragon: Technically he's this for Milza.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: He's not particularly thrilled about serving someone as bloodthirsty as Milza, but like most contracted mages, he obeys him regardless. [[spoiler: Comes to eventually embody this trope in full after Milza starts to show Terius more respect and deference.]]
* NonActionGuy: Likely as a result of being poor in magic, he's never shown to serve any function on the battlefield beyond being TheStrategist. [[spoiler:This makes his desire to join Milza in his final charge into Theo's ranks an especially poignant moment.]]
* OutGambitted: Despite having a keen mind for military strategy, he's ultimately a victim of this at Siluca's hands. [[spoiler: Following the inconclusive engagement between Theo and Milza in the Forest of Eternal Darkness, Terius advises Milza to defeat the remainder of the Altirk Treaty lords in order to force Theo out of his fortified castle and into the field where he can be defeated. Siluca, however, sets up a FalseFlagOperation in the state of Regalia with Selge seemingly being overthrown by his people and forced to flee; Milza is induced to leave behind soldiers as an occupying force and his absence gives Theo enough time to emerge from the Forest of Eternal Darkness and raise a huge levy of 50,000 militia from the Altirk citizenry. Siluca then further cuts off the knees of Terius' strategy to hole up in Castle Unicorn until reinforcements can arrive by having Juzel Rossini induce a slave rebellion among the Starck ranks, forcing them to retreat to their homeland. This leaves Milza isolated with only 5,000 soldiers in Castle Unicorn and besieged by over ten times his number from Theo and the Altirk Treaty lords and only 3,000 Waldlind knights led by Marrine coming in relief.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Averted. While his eyes are red, they aren't particularly noteworthy.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: He uses them and what he lacks in magical prowess, he compensates with a strategic mind.
* TheStrategist: In both domestic and military affairs for Milza, who he attempts to give well-reasoned advice. Although terrified of Milza, he eventually grows enough of a spine to convey his recommendations more forcefully, something that earns Milza's respect and observance of Terius' stratagems.
* TogetherInDeath: Non-romantic example but [[spoiler:he kills himself after Milza is defeated, despondent that his strategies weren't enough to ensure Milza's victory.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Eventually grows to have this toward Milza despite being nominally contracted to Marrine, especially after Milza returns his sentiments and grows to appreciate Terius for his loyalty and willingness to stick by his strategic decisions. [[spoiler:Terius ends up proving this loyalty by joining his liege in death.]]

!Fantasia Union
The other superpower on the continent led by Alexis Doucet. Governed by a congress constituted of the Lords of the Union.
----
[[folder: In General]]
* AwakeningTheSleepingGiant: The entry of the Union into [[spoiler: the ongoing war between the Altirk Treaty and the Alliance is treated as this, as even with certain losses and defections, the vast majority of the Union military forces are unblemished and capable of facing the Alliance and Treaty on equal terms]].
* TheFederation: Has shades of this in practice, as the Lords' Congress sets Union policy in a fairly democratic manner, the constituent Lords voting for set proposals. Played with, however, in that Alexis willfully acts as a nominal head for the majority of the story and doesn't use his enormous clout among the Union Lords to determine the Union's course; [[spoiler: when he's finally roused into action against the Alliance, the rest of the Union Lords unquestionably follow him, showing that the only thing separating the Union from acting very much akin to the Alliance is Alexis having the same level of steely determination as Marrine to act as such]].
* HeadInTheSandManagement: The greater consensus among the Lords' Congress. Even with Marrine blatantly putting the Alliance on the warpath and making her intentions to conquer the continent all but plain, the majority of the Union Lords are too wedded to the status quo to do anything about it. Enabled also by Alexis, whose peaceful nature, lack of decisiveness, and refusal to fight Marrine allow the peace faction of the Lords' Congress to hold sway. [[spoiler: This endures even when Villar, arguably the most prominent Union Lord other than Alexis himself, is killed by Marrine, inducing the formation of the Altirk Treaty in response to the Union's non-action. It takes Theo and Siluca convincing Alexis otherwise to break this stance.]]
* NotSoOmniscientCouncilOfBickering: The Lords' Congress often devolves into this, as too many Lords are content with the status quo and would rather not take any proactive action to disturb it. That Alexis is entirely unwilling to affirmatively use his unquestioned popularity and status among the Union Lords to dictate policy doesn't help either.
* ThePowerOfLove: Supposedly something the Union promotes, although its only mention is in a proclamation by Villar during the Lords' Congress.

The Earl of Altirk. Despite being Marrine's cousin, he is a prominent Lord of the Union and is who Siluca is expected to be contracted to at the start of the series.
----
* AlmightyJanitor: His court rank of earl is not an accurate measure of his strength, either personally or in terms of followers. According to Episode 8, a more accurate title would be [[spoiler: archduke]], if he'd just take it.
* BigFancyCastle: The ruler of one of these, Castle Unicorn, which borders on being a BrightCastle for how fairy tale and picturesque it is.
* ChivalrousPervert: That's how people see him. By his own admission he likes to "be surrounded by beautiful things", which includes picking only young female mages and dressing them in {{Stripperiffic}} outfits. However, despite the rumors that got him the moniker "the Lustful Earl" (and led to Siluca breaking her contract with him in favor of Theo), he never approaches any of them sexually: eye candy aside, he picks women mages due to his subjects' belief that only women should study magic, and acts more as a mentor, releasing them from their contracts when they turn 25 so they can pursue their own interests (and ends up in a self-inflicted StarCrossedLovers situation with his mage leader, Margaret, as a result).
* DoomedMoralVictor: His death triggers the Altirk Treaty, splitting the Union and getting most of its Lords to actually fight against the Alliance while Alexis dithers.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: With the battle against [[spoiler: Waldlind lost, he and Margaret undertake a final suicidal charge into the enemy ranks, taking dozens of soldiers along with them. Even after fighting through an entire bridge of enemies, he's still powerful enough to survive an entire volley of Crest bullets from the Waldlind knights, a weapon powerful enough to destroy castle fortifications, and have a conversation with Marrine before kicking the bucket.]]
* TheGoodKing: As Earl of Altirk, he is beloved by his commoners and nobles alike, and acts as TheMentor to the mages and Lords under his command.
* HonorBeforeReason: [[spoiler:Despite having wide support among the Union Lords and even Alexis' blessing, he declines to take leadership of the Union to wage war against the Alliance because he refuses to take the first strike against Marrine. This costs him Milza's support and ultimately his life.]]
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Almost to the level of Alexis. His waist-length blond hair, stylish and colorful clothes (even his battle outfits), and fair complexion rise to {{Bishonen}} levels.
* TheMentor: Takes an interest in Theo's growth once Theo enters his service as a knight. He includes Theo as part of retinue for the major events he hosts in Castle Unicorn, gives him important assignments such as pacifying the Forest of Eternal Darkness, and has him as a significant part of his campaign against the Alliance en route to the Lords' Congress, where he engenders two major plot points by introducing Theo to Phederico Rossini and Alexis Doucet. He even takes time to send a final message to Theo much in this spirit:
-->'''Villar''': Theo. You managed to entertain me in various ways. From here on, be sure to stun the world.
* ParentalNeglect: The subject of this from his mother, Floria, who was a member of the Kreische family and married Villar's father Lucien Constance. When Lucien defected to the Union, Floria was disowned by her Kreische family relatives and gave Villar the IHaveNoSon treatment. Villar rationalizes this as Floria pushing him away to prevent Lucien from focusing on Villar's Kreische blood but the psychological impact is sufficient enough that Villar finds it difficult to open himself up to women, including his beloved Margaret.
* PolitenessJudo: Certainly not afraid of snarking with a perfectly composed face, giving Dawson, the foremost of the peace-minded Union Lords during the Lords' Congress firmly set on antagonizing Villar for his conflict with the Alliance, a healthy dose of this.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: While he dislikes fighting, he shows what he's really capable of in [[spoiler:his joint suicide charge with Margaret]].
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Is beloved by his populace and treats his subordinates with respect and consideration. He holds no hard feelings toward Siluca for contracting with Theo and is prepared to make Theo the King of Savis in recognition of his accomplishments before Theo requests to enter his service as a knight.
* RedBaron: The "Lustful Earl" due to his reputation for only contracting with young female mages. The outfit he provides for Siluca does not help matters in that respect. [[spoiler: It turns out that he respects and does not take advantage of his contracted mages; the fact that they are all female is only out of respect to his people, who have shamanistic traditions, and he excuses his mages from his service once they turn 25 so they can pursue their own lives and interests.]]
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler:Dies in battle alongside Margaret, who he never had the courage to marry in life]].
* UndyingLoyalty: He inspires this in those who serve him. [[spoiler:And after he's killed, his forces and mages refuse to obey Milza and fight to the end or commit suicide rather than serving another.]]
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: The regard his subjects hold him in cannot be overstated. [[spoiler:There's the troops in Castle Unicorn who fight to the last man after his death in order to avenge him against the Waldlind forces but even well after Waldlind's victory and Milza's installation as the new ruler of Altirk, upstart Lords and remnants of Altirk's forces continue to resist Milza at every turn in Villar's memory.]]
** [[spoiler:Shown in grand style when Theo emerges from the Forest of Eternal Darkness and begins raising an army from Altirk citizenry to defeat Villar's usurper, as Theo swells his forces almost tenfold and marches on Castle Unicorn with 50,000 in tow when Milza can only field 5,000 and is holding on hoping for Waldlind and Starck reinforcements.]]
* XanatosSpeedChess: While [[HonorBeforeReason honorable and with considerable scruples]], he's not opposed to stratagem when it suits him, lulling Waldlind into a false sense of security by refusing Theo and Siluca's request to join the Union, and subsequently routing Waldlind and his cousin Marrine from the field after they believe they can bringing overwhelming force to bear against Theo with impunity. He ends the day with an expanded territory and the services of Theo and Siluca to boot.

The Marquis of Jalucia and head of the Union. Formerly Marrine's betrothed.
----
* ArtAttacker: Played with. His Crest power allows him to direct his troops as if he's a painter filling a canvas with different colors, directing them flawlessly as the painting comes together and his enemy is torn apart in the process. Helps that he wields a baton that is imagined as a paintbrush as he does this.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Don't let his kindness fool you, if he has the right motivation to fight, he will fight, [[spoiler:just ask Lord Dawson.]]
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He's not a warrior, and he's so weak-spirited most of the time that he'd rather let the Union be crushed than oppose Marrine...[[spoiler: but if he has to ''save'' Marrine from herself? He'll raise the forces of the Union and lead them against her and show that that kind exterior and artistic personality hides a fearsome military strategist.]]
* CulturedBadass: A capable painter, singer, and sculptor who also happens to be a superb battlefield commander. When he prepares to lead his forces against [[spoiler:Dawson]], he compares the ensuing battle to playing a melody.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: [[spoiler:After steeling his resolve and joining the war, he regains Marrine's love for good.]]
* HollywoodTactics: Surprisingly averted and used to show his prowess as TheStrategist. In a pre-modern era, his well-trained forces use flags, trumpets, drums, and other signs on the battlefield to change formation and indicate different movements. It helps, of course, that his Crest power allows him to better direct his troops but his forces liberally use the aforementioned mundane means of communication as Alexis' fast moving cavalry separate, encircle, and slowly obliterate numerically inferior and slower foot soldiers.
* LightIsGood: His bright and light-colored outfits reflect his cheerful and earnest personality and contrast the stern and coldly pragmatic black-wearing Marrine.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Very, very handsome with long blond hair, a fair complexion, and deep purple eyes. When he appears at the ball preceding the Lords' Congress, the female members of the audience are universally fawning over him.
* ModestRoyalty: Always humble and effacing even when surrounded by his nominal inferiors as the head of the Union.
* NeutralNoLonger: [[spoiler:After being told by Theo that becoming Empress and uniting the continent by force won't make Marrine happy, he snaps out of his funk and immediately leads his army against Dawson, who had betrayed the Union and sided with the Alliance.]]
* NiceGuy: When younger, he freely taught orphaned children how to sing and earned their trust such that they ended up singing with him not for the money or food he offered but since they genuinely enjoyed his company. [[spoiler: This was one of several things that earned him Marrine's affections.]]
* NonActionGuy: Played with. He has a sword on his person and with a Crest of his power, he should be able to destroy foot soldiers with contemptuous ease, but he's only ever shown directing forces on the battlefield from the rear as a commander. The two times he's in the thick of things, [[spoiler: he depends on Theo, Siluca, and Theo's household to defend himself against the Rossini assassins and in the second, he's retreating from the Sea King Erik in the throes of his berserker Crest power. This noted, given that Alexis was attempting to visit Theo incognito and that Erik had been all but unstoppable up to that point, his reactions appear eminently reasonable in both instances.]]
* OhCrap: His reaction when he sees King Erik's remaining forces [[spoiler:charging straight at his ship, ignoring all injuries into one final berserker charge, although his reaction is more horror at the degree to which Erik's Crest power brings his forces closer to death than fear for his life.]]
* PacifismBackfire: Believed that merely allowing Marrine to conquer the continent would lead to peace, [[spoiler: at least until Theo and Siluca disabuse him of the notion by showing how unhappy it would make her, something that induces him to enter the ongoing war between the Alliance and the Altirk Treaty.]]
* RealMenWearPink: His battle outfit prominently features two flowers on the clasp holding together a long white cloak.
* ReluctantRuler: Although he seemingly has universal support among his fellow Lords, he never proactively asserts his authority as head of the Union beyond adhering to a desire for peace with the Alliance, even when the Alliance's actions clearly make such a course unwise. The two times he's asked to make a decision on the Union's path during the Lords' Congress and following Villar's death, he attempts to surrender leadership of the Union to Villar and sue for peace with the Alliance respectively.
* TheStrategist: Surprisingly shown to be this. When forced onto the battlefield despite his personality, he utterly eviscerates his enemies by showing an incredible command for swiftly changing formations, reading the flow of the battlefield, and directing his forces accordingly, helped by his Crest power that allows him to influence his troops' battlefield movements. And this capacity for battlefield tactics applies whether on land or sea, as [[spoiler: Lord Dawson and King Erik witnessed respectively.]] Marrine herself, who to that point had been the most impressive military commander in the story, remarks on Alexis' prowess when properly motivated.
* SympathyForTheDevil: Sheds ManlyTears when he sees [[spoiler:King Erik charging at him through countless fatal injuries as a mindless berserker, feeling sadness for the ending of his maddened enemy.]]
* UnfitForGreatness: He's a great guy but not the kind of leader a Union at war needs. After Villar's campaign, he refuses to lead the Union against the Alliance because he's in love with Marrine. Marrine [[TheUnfettered has no such limitations]]. [[spoiler: Until Alexis finds the proper motivation at any rate.]]
* WideEyedIdealist: The guy is a romantic at heart, something his beloved Marrine laments.

Villar's younger brother and the Earl of Regalia.

* BigBrotherWorship: To Villar. When he hears that Altirk is under siege, he rides off with his forces heedless of the consequences. [[spoiler: After Villar's death, he's shown doubled over in tears.]]
* ButtMonkey: In nearly every appearance, he's getting embarrassed or is remarking on his inadequacy. At the end of his first major fight on screen, he's crouching in some bushes with his mage, hiding after the Waldlind forces have annihilated his cavalry.
* FalseFlagOperation: Playing on his reputation for general incompetence, [[spoiler: he's used as part of one of these when Siluca induces Milza to drive north into Regalia. Selge fakes that he's part of an uprising and flees, which allows Milza to take Regalia, something he buys because he perceives Selge as incompetent, but also forces him to spend time and men to leave a suitable occupying force. This allows Theo to emerge from the Forest of Eternal Darkness, raise a huge army, and start besieging Castle Unicorn.]]
* EmbarrassingNickname: The Fleeing Earl, for being constantly forced to retreat.
* InadequateInheritor: [[spoiler:After Villar's death, he doesn't feel confident he can lead the rest of the Altirk treaty, so he relinquishes command to Lassic.]]
* LeeroyJenkins: Ignores the counsel of his advisers and rushes off to aid Villar with his cavalry while abandoning all of his foot. This gets his forces routed and he's only saved by more Union reinforcements arriving in the nick of time.
* NiceGuy: He's always nice and polite. [[spoiler: Notably shown when he freely allows Theo to claim his brother's Crest from Milza's corpse, as Theo was the reason Villar was ultimately avenged.]]
* ShedTheFamilyName: [[spoiler:After Theo reconquers Altirk, as thanks for recovering his brother's crest, he takes his mother's family name and gives his brother Igor the earldom of Regalia.]]

* StrongFamilyResemblance: He looks like a younger version of his brother Selge.
* YouAreInCommandNow: [[spoiler:After Selge renounces their name, he's become head of the Constance family and Earl of Regalia too.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Croute Gallas]]
->'''Voiced by''': Masayuki Katou (Japanese), Creator/JoeZieja (English)

The Earl of Le Couleurs and a major proponent of war with the Alliance.
----
* HeroOfAnotherStory: He spends roughly half the series fighting Marrine and Waldlind off-screen, keeping Marrine from fighting Theo and maintaining the SortingAlgorithmOfEvil, insomuch as anyone is evil in this series beyond Chaos supporters.
* LargeHam: Fond of grand pronouncements and leaving little doubt as to where he stands on issues. When Villar, who Gallas hopes will lead the Union against the Alliance in war, shows up to the ball before the Lords' Congress, Gallas loudly declares the need for military action against the Alliance to the assembled audience.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: Much of his relevance to the plot is done off-screen occupying the Waldlind forces from [[spoiler: joining with Milza in full strength and obliterating the Altirk Treaty]], but given that Waldlind has been shown to be the most powerful military kingdom on the continent, his ability to do so for such an extended period without any support from the Union is impressive, [[spoiler: especially since it ultimately took treachery to kill him]].
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: [[spoiler: After Villar's death]], he breaks from the Union peace consensus to openly war with the Alliance.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Done twice, complicating plans on several sides of the continent. [[spoiler: There's Gallas frustrating Marrine at every turn and limiting her ability to aid Milza against the Altirk Treaty, as well as Marrine defeating Gallas using Dawson's treachery, something that forces Theo and Siluca, who were depending on getting the former Villar supporter in Gallas to join the Altirk Treaty, to induce Alexis to rouse the Union to war.]]
* {{Warhawk}}: The biggest cheerleader of this stance among the Union Lords, openly calling for war with Marrine during the ball before the Lords' Congress and angrily confronting Dawson, the leader of the peace faction, at every turn. [[spoiler: His stance is ultimately proven to be right, although the Union doesn't take this tack until after Gallas' death.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Bernard Durum]]
->'''Voiced by''': Etsuo Yokobori (Japanese), Creator/DougErholtz (English)

The Lord of Dawson loyal to the Union and the most prominent supporter of peace and the status quo with the Alliance.
----
* DidntSeeThatComing: [[spoiler: After deciding to meet Alexis' forces in the field, confident that he's facing a green commander who will be shown up by his elder, he quickly realizes that he's completely outmatched against Alexis as a strategist and determines that the only course is to sue for peace.]]
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Due to Alexis' weak leadership and the Union Lords' general dithering, [[spoiler: Dawson believed that he could defect without consequence, only to find that his defection was one of the factors inducing Alexis to go on the warpath and lead a massive force to Dawson's doorstep.]]
* GeneralFailure: Even taking into account [[spoiler:Alexis']] inexperience, leaving a fortified position and sending an outnumbered army of foot soldiers against a numerically superior enemy (that has lots of cavalry), is beyond idiotic.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Amusingly attempted [[spoiler: after Alexis is on his doorstep and Dawson sends his mage to attempt to rejoin the Union, failing to realize that Alexis' resolve has been hardened and that Dawson's treachery won't be so easily forgiven.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: An unpleasant man to put it mildly. He makes it his personal mission to scorn Villar during the Lords' Congress and is openly seething when things aren't going his way. [[spoiler: After he defects to the Alliance, he comments contemptuously on the fate of Gallas and Alexis' indecisiveness.]]
* TheMole: [[spoiler: Implied and it would explain his desire to maintain peace with the Alliance even when it was obvious that this was a losing strategy for the Union but not confirmed.]]
* PlayingBothSides: Played with. [[spoiler: While Theo theorizes he always had a secret agreement with the Alliance, Marrine discusses undisclosed negotiations between Waldlind and an undisclosed third party with Aubestes, it being implied that the third party is Dawson, who Marrine hopes she can leverage to overcome Gallas.]]
* {{Turncoat}}: [[spoiler: Aside from Milza, the most notable instance of a Lord who switched from the Union to the Alliance.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Thought Alexis was nothing but a softie [[spoiler:up until he saw his army being slaughtered by Alexis' perfectly executed battle strategy arranged in the same way as a painting.]]

The head of Villar's corps of contracted mages.
----
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: A dark-skinned, redheaded magic user could be nothing less than a fire mage.
* CastFromHitPoints: Likely a consequence of all magic that overtaxes the user, but when [[spoiler:she and Villar falter during their final charge into the Waldlind ranks together, she clears the way for him with a massive flame spell that turns her body into dust (or possibly burns her to ashes).]]
* CourtlyLove: GenderFlipped, with her as the knight and him as the noble. She's in love with Villar, but his MommyIssues and her vows kept him from pursuing the relationship, and he keeps to his rule of releasing her from his service when she turns 25. [[spoiler:However, when Dartania and Waldlind invade Altirk, she returns incognito and fights to the LastStand with him.]]
* DanceBattler: When in combat, she looks like she's dancing to a waltz as she incinerates her opponents with her fire spells.
* IChooseToStay: [[spoiler:Rather than stay in Dartania and move on with her life, she returns to a besieged Altirk and stays with Villar to the very end.]]
* MsFanservice: A beauty with big breasts and fiery red hair who shows off plenty of skin.
* PlayingWithFire: She specializes in fire spells.
* RedBaron: "Hellfire" Margaret.
* ReligiousBruiser: Mentioned to be a priestess of the Order of the Sacred Flame in her native Dartania. Villar cites this as one of the reasons he's excusing her from his service as the customary age of 25.
* SheCleansUpNicely: Not that she's unattractive, but in her party dress she looks gorgeous.
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler:With Villar and she insists on this outcome even when he offers her the opportunity to escape Altirk's impending defeat.]]
* WreathedInFlames: When she's using her powers. Interestingly, she douses herself in a liquid (possibly oil) before using her magic, so it may be a requirement for its use.

----
* TheBusCameBack: [[spoiler:After being presumed dead after the fall of Castle Unicorn, she returns after the liberation of Sistina.]]
* FakingTheDead: Not intentionally but [[spoiler:the poison she ingests turns out to be non-fatal.]]
* FullFrontalAssault: [[spoiler:She doesn't really fight, but she accompanies her queen in appearing naked in front of her subjects. And despite being embarrassed, she marches alongside them.]]
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Has blonde hair and is a nice girl and devoted mage.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler:She drank poison rather than serve anyone but Villar, but she was given a non-fatal poison instead.]]
* NumberTwo: For Queen Eudokia [[spoiler:after Villar's death.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: As with most of his followers, Laura has this toward Villar, preferring to [[spoiler:attempt a dramatic suicide in front of the conquering Marrine in lieu of serving her. This later extents to Queen Eudokia, Laura opting to stay loyal to her rather than join the Mage Academy's war against the Lords.]]

The contracted mage of the Constance brothers Selge and Igor.
----
* DeadpanSnarker: Frequently toward Selge, as she's quite cognizant of his shortcomings and has to work around them often.
* HairAntennae: Hers curve backwards.
* HypercompetentSidekick: Not that Selge and especially Igor are completely incompetent, but she's a good strategist to compensate for Selge's lackluster tactical abilities.
* UndyingLoyalty: To the Constance siblings. [[spoiler: She stays with them even after the Mage Academy declares war on the Imperial Army and calls all mages to their side.]]

!!Sistina
An island nation that is Theo's homeland. Ruled with an iron fist by the Rossini family, which allows Chaos to spread freely and empowers the citizenry to prey on each other to keep the populace divided and under their control.
----
[[folder: Phederico Rossini]]
-> '''Voiced by''': Creator/TakashiMatsuyama (Japanese), Creator/BradVenable (English)

The patriarch of the Rossini family, a Lord of the Union, and the current ruler of Sistina.
----
* BloodOath: What the Rossini Crest power of omerta is referred to as. The surrounding people who swear loyalty to the omerta flag holder are put under a compulsion to follow the holder's commands and act without inhibitions in the process. The Rossini family members frequently call upon their subjects to be enthralled by omerta as a sign of their fealty and Phederico uses it on the group of assassins he sends against Theo at the Lords' Congress.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: His attempt to have Theo killed at the Lords' Congress gets Sistina kicked out of the Union due to his assassins unwittingly targeting Alexis, who was near Theo at the time.
* TheDon: Certainly gives off this vibe between Sistina's Italy theme and his focus on the maintenance of his family's power. That the Crest power of the Rossini family is named omerta helps in this respect.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: His arguably most redeeming trait is his love for his children, [[spoiler:as he's devastated when Salvador and Dorni are killed and aghast at the notion of losing more of his sons.]]
* FaceDeathWithDignity: With the curtain closing on the Rossini family's rule, [[spoiler:he willingly surrenders his Crest to Juzel and accepts his execution at Theo's hands as the price of his defeat.]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: He wants revenge against Theo for killing his son Salvador because he was his family. This is coming from the guy who had his men kill Theo's father Carlo for helping out Sistina in secret from his families tyranny and who was Theo's family.
* TheUnfought: Although Theo's chief opponent for control of Sistina, the two never meet in battle on the field, Phederico's sons taking up this role in their father's stead. [[spoiler:When Theo appears at Phederico's doorstep, the latter elects for negotiations and even has Juzel representing the family's remaining interests.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Firmly averted despite Salvador and Dorni falling into this trap: Phederico never underestimates the threat Theo presents and admonishes each of his sons to prepare thoroughly in order to achieve victory.
-->'''Phederico''': Exercise extreme caution and act boldly. That's the Rossini way.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Dorni Rossini]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/IsshinChiba (Japanese), Creator/DavidVincent (English)

One of the sons of Phederico and the most martial of the three brothers.
----
* {{BFS}}: Wields a huge greatsword in battle, although it's rendered moot against Theo's defense and likely contributes in part to Dorni tiring out and ultimately being defeated.
* BlingOfWar: Takes to the battlefield in a suit of deep red heavy plate armor with gold trimmings and a fur lined cape.
* BloodOath: As with all Rossini family members, he's capable of using the omerta flag to compel his troops to fight for him, although his use is the only instance we've seen in which the omerta compulsion is not absolute, as sufficient fear induces his soldiers to flee, so his usage may be inferior to that of his relatives.
* LeeroyJenkins: His father and Juzel have to talk him down from rushing off to avenge Salvador's death immediately and to gather a sufficient number of troops to meet the threat Theo represents.
* VillainousBreakdown: Undergoes this when his troops start fleeing the battlefield, causing him to double over in shock and later start attacking Theo with wild abandon.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Salvador Rossini]]
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/SoichiroHoshi (Japanese), Creator/JoeZieja (English)

Another son of Phederico. A flamboyant man in a relationship with Yana.
----
* BloodOath: Courtesy of the omerta flag of the Rossini family and he offers the first sight of Rossini loyalists in Sistina by showing the well-to-do crowd surrounding him is eager to take the omerta blood oath and attack Theo.
* DirtyCoward: Ultimately shown as this. After a poor showing against Theo in which the latter uses a woodsman's ax to break Salvador's sword, he runs for dear life before being stopped by Rebecca.
* IronicName: Salvador means "savior" and he's far from a savior to the people of Sistina.
* LeeroyJenkins: Ignores the advice of his father, Juzel, and even his own assassin Boltz to gather overwhelming
force to snuff out Theo's rebellion and sets off with only 200 soldiers. This ultimately gets him killed.
* MakeAnExampleOfThem: The Rossini family MO and Salvador follows through with having a village suspected of harboring Theo burned.
* SharpDressedMan: All of the Rossini family members are this but Salvador takes the cake with his maroon long jacket and matching feathered hat and long boots, all of which he wears even in combat.
* UnholyMatrimony: With Yana, although it should be noted he left a sufficient impression on her that she seeks to avenge him following his death.

->'''Voiced by''': Hitoshi Yanai (Japanese), Creator/ChrisHackney (English)

An assassin and Artist in the service of the Rossini family.
----
* PoisonedWeapons: He utilizes a poison provided by Yana against Irvin [[spoiler:and brings him to death's door by grazing him after Irvin deals a fatal strike.]]
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler:After Irvin deals the decisive blow, Boltz steels himself to deal Irvin a glancing blow with his poisoned knife to attempt this.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: To Salvador and the Rossini family. He attempts to fulfill Salvador's last command to him to defeat Irvin to the letter even [[spoiler:after Salvador is dead.]]

!!Forest of Eternal Darkness

-> '''Voiced by''': Creator/YokoHikasa (Japanese), Creator/CristinaVee (English)

A Dark Witch who Theo and Siluca encounter several times throughout the series.
----
* AxCrazy: She may try to hide it, but she's not a mentally stable person.
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: [[spoiler:Rather than letting the Mage's Association [[BurnTheWitch burn her to death]], she summons the same demon that provoked the Great Hall Tragedy and lets herself be killed by it in front of everyone as one final middle finger to her captors.]]
* DarkIsEvil: As a Dark Witch, she has contracts with Chaos demons that mages and White Witches wouldn't associate with.
* EnemySummoner: She fights mainly by summoning demons to do the fighting for her. Her ability to summon the Demon Lord that killed the archdukes during the Great Hall Tragedy in particular provokes Siluca's suspicions about her greater role in events on the continent [[spoiler: and it is ultimately revealed that she did so under instructions from the Mage Academy.]]
* EvilLaugh: Fond of indulging in these when she has the upper hand in battle.
* FlyingBroomstick: Flies around on one. Her main form of attack outside of her summoning skills usually involves infusing magic into her broom and shooting it at her opponents as a powerful projectile.
* GreenThumb: She can summon vines from the ground to bind her opponents.
* HotWitch: She milks it for all its worth.
* {{Hypocrite}}: She is disgusted when she states that she hates Theo and Sulica for trusting each other and that it makes her "want to vomit", this is coming from the one who trusted Salvador and sided with him while he trusted her to.
* {{Jerkass}}: Is shown to have very few redeeming traits aside from her relationship with Salvador, torturing and mocking her opponents when she has an advantage.
* LaughingMad: [[spoiler:After being captured, she laughs and rolls on the floor of her cell instead of answering any of Siluca's questions, and also does this before she offers her soul to the same demon that caused the Great Hall Tragedy.]]
* {{Narcissist}}: Other than her apparent love for Salvador, she doesn't care about anyone but herself and uses her magic to cause chaos and despair just for her own entertainment without the thought of anyone else.
* {{Sadist}}: This is pretty much be her name as she takes sadistic pleasure in killing people and make them suffer, you can just see it by her mentally unstable psychopathic face.
* SquishyWizard: While a skilled and powerful witch, she's not very good at taking direct hits. Each time she fights, she's disabled by one attack from her opponent.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Wears a low cut black dress in all her appearances that leaves little to the imagination.
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler:Before Theo's army can destroy Rossini's, she uses all her power in an attempt to kill them all, but luckily Siluca blocks her attack.]]
* UnholyMatrimony: She briefly had one with Salvador Rossini. [[spoiler: Her feelings for him appear to be genuine, as part of her motivation in fighting Theo afterward is to avenge Salvador.]]
* WildCard: She doesn't seem to have any true loyalty besides herself. Her chaotic personality means she's not very reliable in the long run. [[spoiler: Except to preserve magic on the continent by working with the Mage Academy.]]

->'''Voiced by''': So Nazawa (Japanese), Creator/DCDouglas (English)

The Vampire King who resides in a castle deep in the Forest of Eternal Darkness. Thousands of years ago, he fought with Clara, the Werewolf Queen, against the Ultimate Chaos, but the possible coming of the Grancrest induces him to change allegiances to protect his immortality.
----
* AffablyEvil: He is very polite, hates fighting and only [[ChaoticNeutral wants to prevent the formation of the Grancrest because it would take away his vampirism and immortality rather than for evil itself]]. He just [[HumbleGoal wants to stay alive]].
* TheAgeless: Courtesy of his powers. The fear of the Grancrest being formed and [[TheMagicGoesAway magic and Chaos dissipating in its wake]] is his primary motivation in siding with unsavory characters such as Yana.
* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: He has purple skin.
* TheBusCameBack: After disappearing during the first confrontation at the Forest of Eternal Darkness [[spoiler:he returns to the scene when the Mages Association true colors are revealed.]]
* EvilLaugh: Gives a chilling one when he reveals an almost endless army of clones.
* EnergyAbsorption: He can absorb the life force of those he touches.
* {{Familiar}}: As one might expect, he can control bats and directs one to welcome Theo and Siluca into his territory.
* FinalBoss: [[spoiler:The final enemy Theo battles before creating the Grancrest.]]
* FurAgainstFang: Averted in the past, as he and the Werewolf Queen Clara were steadfast allies fighting Chaos, but played more straight in the present when she expresses her desire to continue to fight Chaos even if it means the end of her immortality. Even then, he declines to take up arms directly against her and directs Theo and Siluca to her location to save her from Yana instead of fighting them.
* ImmortalsFearDeath: The crux of his opposition to the heroes [[spoiler: and alliance of convenience with the Mages Association Pandora faction]].
* LivingForeverIsAwesome: In contrast to Clara, he is firmly of this opinion. His fear of death drives all of his actions and he claims he only fought against the Ultimate Chaos as a matter of survival instead of principle.
* MesACrowd: Can create copies of himself [[spoiler:and it's what allows him to continue existing even when his original body is destroyed.]]
* MortalityPhobia: [[spoiler:Following his defeat to Theo and party, his remaining clone slinks away into the shadows screaming "[[ThisCannotBe I don't want to die!]]"]]
* NotWorthKilling: [[spoiler:Emma and Luna decide the last remaining clone is too weak and fearful to be a threat, and not the same being that caused the death of her mother and brother.]]
* OminousPipeOrgan: Fond of playing one and he welcomes Theo and Siluca to his castle this way.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: Vampires are simply one of the several manifestations of an Artist's abilities, Dimitrie's powers naturally being implied to be of a significantly higher tier.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: It doesn't matter that he's an AffablyEvil millennia-old vampire, he's dangerous if he wants to and the eyes are a good reminder.
* SacredHospitality: Unequivocally refuses to attack Clara upon Yana's request because she is his invited guest.
* VampireMonarch: Has the title but it is never evident that he rules over others of his kind. [[spoiler: It's later shown that there are indeed other vampires in the Forest of Eternal Darkness but they're seen serving in Theo's Altirk militia alongside the werewolves Dimitrie indirectly antagonized, so it's left ambiguous as to their relationship with Dimitrie.]]
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Can transform into a flock of bats, which he does to quickly depart once he decides to abandon his castle.

The Werewolf Queen and mother of Emma, Luna, and Ian.
----
* FurAgainstFang: As noted in Dimitrie's entry, this is largely averted due to them being longtime allies. Even after Dimitrie declares his desire to see Chaos continue, Clara merely leaves in a huff instead of taking up arms against him.
* [[TheGoodKing The Good Queen]]: Is universally beloved by her subject werewolves, who are incensed when she is threatened and grieve at her death.
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: Yana notes that she has impressive regenerative capabilities, although by the time Theo and Siluca arrive to save her, Clara's abilities have been taxed to the limit.
* MamaBear: Fiercely defensive of her children and is lured into a trap by Yana, who takes Emma and Luna as captives, as a result.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: With Dimitrie. Despite fighting together for centuries against Chaos, they separate over their differing opinions concerning truly ending Chaos.
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: Is perfectly content with the notion of the Grancrest ending Chaos and by extension, her powers and immortality, if it leads to a better future for her children.
* WorfHadTheFlu: Despite being implied to be on par with Dimitrie, who Theo recognized as his clear superior, Clara is helpless against Yana for the majority of their fight due to Yana holding Emma and Luna captive. Once Emma and Luna are freed, Clara dispatches the two demons Yana had summoned with ease.

----
* EleventhHourRanger: Joins Theo's group in the final confrontation against [[spoiler:Dimitrie]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Initially abrasive and contemptuous of Theo and Siluca, no doubt inflamed to a certain degree by stress over his mother and sisters being missing, but he later sincerely thanks Theo following his sisters' rescue [[spoiler:and mother's funeral.]]
* LittleBitBeastly: Like all werewolves, his power as an Artist manifests as lycanthropy. His ears and hands turn in those of a wolf when partially transformed.
* SavageWolves: When ravaging the invading Dartania troops, he turns into one of these, howling after a kill to unnerve the Dartania forces.
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler:Gets fatally injured holding down Dimitrie to allow Theo finish off the Vampire King.]]
* YouAreInCommandNow: He becomes the leader of the werewolves of the Forest of Eternal Darkness after the death of Clara.
