->[-''Hisuian Decidueye is introduced in Legends: Arceus''-]

Alola's Grass-type starter, Rowlet is a Grass/Flying-type owl, and is the first starter to be dual-typed in the first stage since Bulbasaur. It turns its head 180 degrees to look at its Trainer for instructions, and can pelt enemies with the razor-sharp leaves that grow in its feathers. Rowlet evolves into Dartrix, who appears to be snobbish in personality, but is actually a bit of a birdbrain. When Dartrix reaches its final evolution, it becomes the hooded archer Decidueye, with bow-like wings that help it fire its arrow quills more accurately. It switches its Flying type for a Ghost type and learns the move Spirit Shackle, which pins the opponent from switching or fleeing from battle.

In addition to serving as the grass starter of Alola, the Rowlet line also serves as the grass starter for ''Videogame/PokemonLegendsArceus'', forming a trio with Cyndaquil and Oshawott. In the Hisui region, the harsh environment has caused Dartrix to evolve into the Grass/Fighting-type Hisuian Decidueye, who has feathers better suited for the environment and stronger legs for kicking. It travels around the region without settling down, and will engage in close-range combat if someone displays hostility at it.
----
* AbnormalLimbRotationRange: Rowlet is prone to rotating its head 180 degrees. Justified, as it's an owl.
* ActionInitiative: The line naturally learns Sucker Punch, and Decidueye also gained Shadow Sneak as a level-up move in ''Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon''.
* AloofArcher: Decidueye is cold, quiet, and calculating. It's also an archer that uses its quills as arrows and one of its wings as a bow.
* AscendedExtra: Rowlet is a newer starter Pokémon and managed to make it into ''VideoGame/PokemonSwordAndShield'', but faded into the background as "yet another starter" after the Alola games concluded. However, it returned in ''Pokémon Legends: Arceus'' as the Grass starter, where the line's archer theming meshes with the feudal Japanese environment quite well.
* BareFistedMonk: Hisuian Decidueye are part Fighting-type.
* BirdPeople: Decidueye has a more humanoid body shape than its pre-evolutions, with its wings ending in FeatherFingers.
* BizarreAndImprobableBallistics: The family is able to curve its feather arrows after they've been fired.
* BlowYouAway:
** Rowlet starts off with Flying as its secondary type. However, upon evolving into Decidueye, it loses its Flying-type in exchange for a secondary Ghost-type (Alolan Decidueye) or Fighting-type (Hisuian Decidueye).
** The line can learn several Flying-type moves regardless of evolution stage as well as some wind-based moves such as Defog, Haze, and Ominous Wind through breeding.
** Several of its attacks and animations show that it is still capable of true flight as a Decidueye.
* BoringButPractical: Long Reach (which prevents the user's moves from triggering contact-based effects) isn't a particularly exciting or flashy Ability, but it is invaluable when paired with [[SwitchOutMove U-turn]], which allows it to switch out almost risk-free without suffering damage from Rocky Helmet or risking status from abilities like Flame Body.
* BowAndSwordInAccord: Decidueye can learn Leaf Blade, and both its {{Secret Art}}s, Spirit Shackle (for Alolan Decidueye) and Triple Arrows (for Hisuian Decidueye), involve archery.
* BrainlessBeauty: Dartrix becomes one upon evolving from Rowlet. It's obsessed with its appearance and kind of a [[{{Pun}} birdbrain]], often bungling things and then making them worse trying to fix them.
* BreakingOldTrends:
** The Rowlet line is the first line of starter Pokémon to have its secondary typing change once it reaches its final form. Rowlet and Dartrix are part-Flying, while Decidueye is part-Ghost.
** Decidueye losing its Flying-type compared to its pre-evolutions made it the first non-Flying-type Pokémon present in the Flying Egg Group.
* BreakoutCharacter: Rowlet has become very popular, especially in Japan, where it was voted the most popular Gen 7 Pokémon in a Nintendo Dream poll, due to its cute design and characterization in the ''Sun & Moon'' anime series. It was popular enough to make it into the starter trio in ''Pokémon Legends: Arceus'' along with other starters that were well-liked in their respective generations.
* CloseRangeCombatant: Compared to Alolan Decidueye who prefer to attack at range, Hisuian Decidueye like to get up close and personal with their opponents in order to overpower them. Fittingly, it trades in the Long Reach ability for Scrappy, which lets its stronger Fighting-type attacks hit Ghost-types.
* ColdSniper: Decidueye is a coolheaded, logical archer in battle. At least [[NotSoStoic until it gets surprised]].
* CriticalHitClass: In ''Legends: Arceus'', Hisuian Decidueye's Triple Arrows boosts its crit rate by 2 stages when it's used, meaning that any move with innate crit, like Leaf Blade, [[{{Combo}} will become guaranteed to crit after a single use of Triple Arrows]]. Averted as of ''Scarlet and Violet'', where the crit boost was replaced with a flinch chance.
* CuteOwl: Just look at Rowlet, a bowtie-wearing owl that is so round that it looks like a WaddlingHead.
* TheDandy: Dartrix is well-groomed and doesn't like its bangs touched, and it will forfeit a battle to groom itself if it gets dirty. The ''Sun'' Pokédex entry even calls it a dandy. It grows out of this by the time it evolves.
* DiscardAndDraw:
** Rowlet and Dartrix are Grass/Flying Types, making them immune to Ground Type moves, but very weak to Ice-Types. Upon evolving into Decidueye, they lose their Flying-Type to pick up the Ghost-Type. The Ground-Type immunity becomes a resistance, Ice-Types don't hurt as much, they lose their weaknesses to Rock and Poison and become resistant to Electric, and they become immune to Normal- and Fighting-Type moves instead. It does gain a Dark and Ghost-type weakness, though.
** Hisuian Decidueye exchanges its Ghost-type for Fighting, giving it, among other things, Psychic and Fairy-type weaknesses while becoming strong against Dark-types.
* DishingOutDirt: Hisuian Decidueye can be taught Rock Tomb in ''Scarlet and Violet''.
* ExtremityExtremist: Hisuian Decidueye primarily attacks with kicks.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Dartrix is usually seen with its eyes closed. It only opens them when annoyed or surprised.
* EyeTake: Dartrix has a wide-eyed expression when annoyed or surprised.
* FeatherFingers: The tips of Decidueye's wings have feathers that act as fingers, allowing it to hold one of its drawstrings and shoot its feather arrows.
* FeatherFlechettes: Rowlet and Dartrix can attack by launching their feathers, which are apparently made of sharp leaves.
* FighterMageThief:
** Alolan Decidueye is the Thief of its starter trio, being the fastest of the three (only relatively, as it's still a MightyGlacier) with balanced attacking stats, an archery theme that demonstrates an emphasis on skillful attacking, and a secondary Ghost-type that emphasizes stealth.
** Meanwhile, Hisuian Decidueye is the Fighter of its trio, being the slowest and most physically-oriented while being based on {{Ronin}} and having a secondary Fighting-type that emphasizes more straightforward attacking prowess.
* TheFightingNarcissist: Dartrix spends its free time grooming itself. However, its vanity causes it to get distracted in the middle of the battle and forfeit when its feathers get dirty, just so it can get itself clean again.
* FurryReminder: Despite Decidueye's primarily humanoid body shape, its [[https://youtu.be/ABPd7vwocuY?t=11s legs bend "backwards"]] like regular birds do.[[note]]"Backwards" because while a bird's leg is different from a human's, it's not ''drastically'' [[http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DINsqLzxeUs/ToaJcfX0sJI/AAAAAAAAGag/tDTJm32HPqI/s1600/hind_limb_comparative_anatomy.png different]]; what we generally see as their 'knee' is actually their ankle joint.[[/note]]
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Hisuian Decidueye's bio mentions that it mainly attacks with kicks; however, thanks to the limited move selection of ''Legends: Arceus'', the only kind of kick it actually does in-game is from its signature move Triple Arrows, and even then only as the first half of a longer attack (though its physical attack animation does show it slashing opponents with its talons). ''Scarlet and Violet'' gives it Low Kick and Low Sweep, but only through [=TMs=], and its movepool overall is still unusually devoid of kicking moves for a Pokémon who apparently specializes in them.
* GhostlyAnimals: Decidueye is a Ghost type based on owls. Interestingly, it evolves from the non-Ghost type Rowlet and Dartrix (both of whom are Grass/Flying).
* GreenThumb: Like many Grass-type starters, the line's primary type. Rowlet and Dartrix also have a bowtie made of leaves.
* InTheHood: Decidueye gains a leafy green hood upon evolving from Dartrix.
* HairFlip: Dartrix's idle animation in battle, adding to its snobbish personality.
* JackOfAllStats: It has the most balanced stats of the three Alola starters, although Decidueye is slower than the other Grass-Type starters except Chesnaught and Torterra.
* KamehameHadoken: Hisuian Decidueye learns Aura Sphere by leveling up.
* KillItWithIce: The Grass/Flying-typed Rowlet and Dartrix have a double weakness to Ice-type moves.
* LogicalWeakness: As a Grass/Flying-type, the line has a double weakness to Ice-type moves; fitting for a starter in the tropical Alola region.
* LongRangeFighter: Alolan Decidueye's Hidden Ability is called "Long Reach", which turns all its contact moves into non-contact ones.
* MageMarksman: Decidueye's Spirit Shackle attack involves it pinning its opponent's shadow to the ground with an arrow.
* MagicKnight: Decidueye's Attack and Special Attack stats are near equal and above average, and it can learn Swords Dance and Nasty Plot to boost them, respectively. Its Hisuian form is more biased towards physical Attack, though its Special Attack is still pretty high.
* MightyGlacier: Decidueye has high offenses in both physical and special attack as well as decent defenses, but its 70 speed leaves it lagging behind many opponents (though it does outpace the other two Alolan starters' final forms). Hisuian Decidueye has even higher physical stats at the cost of a further 10 point reduction to speed. Then again, owls are adapted for slow, silent, precise flight.
* MartialPacifist: Hisuian Decidueye won't attack anyone who doesn't display hostility towards it first.
* MythologyGag:
** Rowlet's ''Ultra Moon'' Pokédex entry states that it likes tight, dark places and often uses its trainer's pocket or bag as a nest; a trait first shown by Ash's Rowlet in the anime, who often sleeps in his trainer's backpack.
** Rowlet, Cyndaquil and Oshawott form the starter trio in ''Pokémon Legends: Arceus''. Each of them is from each of the starter trios available in the original ''VideoGame/PokemonSunAndMoon'', with Rowlet being part of Alola's native trio and Cyndaquil and Oshawott being available via Island Scan.
* NobodyTouchesTheHair: Dartrix's reveal even makes a point to show that trying to touch its hair in Pokémon Refresh makes it angry.
* NothingUpMySleeve: It draws it arrows out of its wings, which resemble sleeves when not in use.
* NotSoStoic: The ''Moon'' dex entry says that Decidueye is normally "cool and cautious", but completely loses its composure if it gets surprised. This makes more sense when one realizes that while archers are excellent in their ability to ambush enemies, they can't handle being ambushed themselves due to the concentration needed to use a bow.
* OminousOwl: While Decidueye isn't particularly scary-looking, they are effective hunters and are part Ghost-type.
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: Decidueye, just like the majority of Ghost-types, is a clearly alive and tangible creature rather than an actual spirit of the dead. Its Ghost typing most likely comes from channeling spiritual energy for its attacks, similar to Alolan Marowak, and possibly also its mythological inspirations (particularly the Seminole [[WickedWitch stikini]] and the Roman [[OurVampiresAreDifferent strix]]).
* TheOwlKnowingOne: Subverted with Dartrix, which is an owl, but also kind of a ditz. Doubles as TruthInTelevision, as owls actually aren't all that smart, despite popular media depicting them as wise and intelligent.
* {{Planimal}}: The line takes this a bit further than some other Grass-types; Rowlet's ''Sun'' dex entry attributes its nocturnal nature to photosynthesis, causing it to sleep during the day to store up energy and then become active at night.
* PunnyName:
** Rowlet's an owlet. The "Row" may come from round, ar''row,'' or "rowan", a type of mountain ash. Mokuroh combines ''moku'' (wood) with ''fukurō'' (owl).
** Dartrix seems to come from "dart", referencing the line's FeatherFlechettes, and "strix", the Latin word for owl. Fukuthrow combines ''fukurō'' (owl) with "throw".
** Decidueye comes from "Deciduous", a variety of tree that sheds its leaves and "Deadeye", a term for an expert marksman. The Japanese name ''Junaiper'' is a mix of the Juniper tree and sniper.
* RainOfArrows: Its exclusive Z-Move, Sinister Arrow Raid, has Decidueye release multiple arrows that surround it, before flying up and then sending them towards the target.
* RecurringElement: The Alola Grass starter, and the third to be based on birds. Rowlet and Dartrix are the first bird starters to actually be Flying-types, but Decidueye ditches the Flying-type to match the flightless Blaziken and Empoleon.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Hisuian Decidueye is more agressive than the rest of the species, and its pupils have turned red.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Rowlet is a nearly spherical barn owlet.
* {{Ronin}}: Hisuian Decidueye is based on the archetypal wandering, masterless {{Samurai}}. It travels the region while never fully settling down, and being part Fighting-type means it's more of a close combat fighter than its regular counterpart. The feathers on its head also resemble a traditional Japanese [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasa_(hat) kasa]] hat.
* SecretArt:
** Alolan Decidueye is the only Pokémon that learns Spirit Shackle (that makes its target unable to flee from battle or switch out) and its Z-Move version, Sinister Arrow Raid.
** Their Hidden Ability, Long Reach, allows them to use any move without making contact.
** Like the Grass starters before them, they get Frenzy Plant and Grass Pledge.
** Hisuian Decidueye is the only Pokémon that learns Triple Arrows, a Fighting-type move that does damage, increases the chance of critical hits, and lowers the target's defenses.
* ShadowPin: Decidueye's signature move Spirit Shackle deals damage while preventing the target from fleeing.
* ShownTheirWork:
** Dartrix's BrainlessBeauty status may be a reference to how real owls actually aren't all that smart.
** Decidueye is based on the [[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stilt-owl stilt-owl]], a species of owl native to the Hawaiian Islands that went extinct when humans first started settling the islands around the 1st millennium A.D. This is why Decidueye is a Ghost type and has long legs. Furthermore, stilt-owls were predators of honeycreepers, the species Oricorio is based on, which is referenced in its debut trailer by one-shotting Sensu form Oricorio with Spirit Shackle.
** Furthermore, Decidueye's Ghost type is a reference to the many cultural associations between owls and the underworld; African folklore, many Native American tribes from Northern to Southern America, even the Romans and Europe, have all believed owls to be agents of the underworld, emissaries of death, or otherwise servants to sinister forces. Some cultures also regard them as a disguise for vampires or blood-sucking witches, such as the Roman Strix, the Romanian Strigoi, and the Seminole Stikini, or as the icon of dark spirits, such as Marinette, a particularly feared [[UsefulNotes/{{Voudoun}} loa]].
** Decidueye has zygodactyl feel, with two toes forward and two facing backward, much like real owls (and unlike previous owl Pokémon Hoothoot and Noctowl).
** Decidueye having a Hisuian form may be a reference to Cikap-kamuy, the god of owls and the land worshipped by the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido (where Hisui is based on). Hisuian Decidueye's appearance resembles a samurai wearing an [[http://www.kasama.or.jp/english/yabusame/ ayaigasa]], a type of conical hat worn by samurai archers for hunting or ceremonial purposes.
* SlobsVersusSnobs: Decidueye can be seen as a slob counterpart to Serperior based on appearance. Decidueye is partially based on an archer, which is commonly depicted being based in the outskirts of civilization, and its appearance is very shabby. Meanwhile, Serperior's appearance is based on royalty with even the facial expression to match. Coincidentally, Serperior can be caught in Alola.
* SoulPower: Alolan Decidueye becomes a Ghost-type upon evolving.
* StarterMon: The Grass-type starter of Alola, and also Hisui in ''Pokémon Legends: Arceus''.
* StealthExpert: Rowlet can fly silently, drawing close to opponents without being noticed, [[ShownTheirWork just like a real owl]].
* StealthPun: Decidueye is a Ghost-type owl-like Pokémon; [[BilingualBonus "owl" in Indonesian is "burung hantu"]], which literally translates to "ghost bird".
* TrickArrow: Dartrix can bend its FeatherFlechettes to alter their trajectory.
* TurnsRed: Like all Grass-type starters, it has the ability Overgrow, which boosts the power of its Grass-type moves when it's low on health.
* UndergroundMonkey: Hisuian Decidueye is part Fighting-type, and its feathers form an insulating layer to protect it from the cold.
* UnwiseOwl: Dartrix is described as "a bit of a birdbrain" that tends to make mistakes and attempt to cover to no avail. It can get over this difficult phase when a trainer helps it.
* UselessUsefulSpell: Decidueye has great Special Attack and can learn Nasty Plot, which would be good if it could actually learn more than ten special moves, only two of which are available via level-up.
* VisualPun: Its ''bow''tie turns into ''draw''strings to form a ''bow'' after becoming Decidueye.
* WaddlingHead: Rowlet looks like one, but it has a head that's separate from the rest of its body, which becomes clear when it turns it around 180 degrees.
* YouWillNotEvadeMe: Spirit Shackle deals heavy Ghost-type damage and prevents opponents from fleeing. As a part-Ghost-type, Alolan Decidueye itself is immune to being trapped, and can escape from battle without fail.

[[caption-width-right:240:Incineroar]]

Alola's Fire-type Starter, Litten is a Fire-type kitten. It attacks by coughing up fiery hairballs. When it evolves into Torracat, it gains a flame sac on its neck, which resembles a bell, even producing a ringing sound when Torracat uses fire attacks. Its final evolution is Incineroar, a muscular bipedal tiger that is a Fire/Dark-type with the persona of a {{heel}} wrestler. Incineroar's former signature move is Darkest Lariat, a Dark-type wrestling move.

Incineroar also joins many Pokémon [[note]]Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Pichu, Mewtwo, the Pokémon Trainer (with Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard), Lucario, and Greninja[[/note]] as a playable fighter in ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate''.
----
* ActionInitiative: In a similar vein to other feline Pokémon, the line can be bred with Fake Out as one of its egg moves. A move with +3 priority that always causes the target to flinch, but only works on the first turn it's sent out.
* ArmorPiercingAttack: Incineroar's [[SecretArt Darkest Lariat]] ignores all defensive and evasive stat changes made by the opponent, also doubling as a pseudo-AlwaysAccurateAttack. It can still miss if Incineroar's accuracy has been lowered and will not hit as hard if Incineroar's Attack has been reduced, and does not ignore evasion-based Abilities like Sand Veil and Snow Cloak or Defense-based Abilities such as Marvel Scale and Fur Coat.
* BigOlEyebrows: In particular, they are actually part of its forehead stripe.
* BishonenLine: True to [[Manga/TigerMask its inspiration]], Incineroar resembles a person in a tiger costume more than an actual tiger.
* BoisterousBruiser: Incineroar. Comes with the territory of being a show-off LargeHam {{heel}} wrestler.
* BloodKnight: Torracat loves battling so much that its relentless attacks cause opponents to lose the will to fight.
* BreathWeapon: {{Subverted|Trope}}. Torracat and Incineroar rely on their ornaments (Torracat's collar and Incineroar's belt) for flame projectiles. Litten is the closest, but it actually just coughs out flaming furballs rather than actual flames.
* BreakingOldTrends: Until Incineroar debuted, no starter Pokémon had ever lost points in a stat during the evolutionary process. Torracat loses a whopping 30 speed when it evolves into Incineroar.
** From looking at Incineroar and its wrestling motif, one could be forgiven for assuming it would be the '''fourth''' Fire/Fighting fully-evolved starter after Blaziken, Infernape and Emboar. In reality, its secondary type is Dark, being themed around heel wrestlers.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: Incineroar's ''Shield'' dex entry notes that it helps out small Pokémon and thus, it does have a kind side.
* CastingAShadow: Incineroar has a Dark secondary typing and can learn darkness-based Dark-type moves such as Dark Pulse.
* CatsAreMean: This cat Pokémon clearly doesn't do "nice". It can be ''brutal''.
* CatsAreSuperior: Litten is described as logical and cool-headed. Its default expression on its face gives it the CatsAreSnarkers vibe as well. As it evolves, it drops the "logical and cool-headed" act and goes straight into a LargeHam that's confident in its abilities as a fighter.
* CatFolk: Incineroar is a cat and has a very humanoid build.
* CatsHateWater: Comes with the territory of being a Fire Pokémon based on cats. Becomes ironic in that Incineroar is based on a tiger, a real-life aversion of this trope.
* CombatPragmatist: As a Dark-type {{heel}} wrestler, this is Incineroar's ''modus operandi''. It's even been noted to be reckless enough to attack ''trainers''. Incineroar's signature move and Z-Move are Dark-type wrestling moves, fitting with this motif.
* ConfusionFu: Incineroar's movepool is pretty diverse. In addition to learning Fire-type and Dark-type moves, it can learn many Fighting-type moves, as well as Earthquake, Leech Life, and Acrobatics. Throw in the moves it can be tutored, and Incineroar can attack with 11 of the 18 types.
* CuteKitten: It may be stoic on the outside, but Litten is still very much an adorable little red and black tabby kitten.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Incineroar is quite jerkish and unfeeling, but it's actually [[{{Kayfabe}} all a part of the act]] of being a {{Heel}}.
* DiscardAndDraw: Incineroar becomes part-Dark type after evolving. The Dark-type gets rid of Fire's resistance to Bug and Fairy-type as well as adding a weakness to Fighting, but it gains resistance to Ghost and Dark, and becomes immune to Psychic-type moves.
* TheDreaded: Their Hidden Ability is Intimidate.
* EvilCounterpart:
** Through its typing, design, and learnset, Incineroar is a darker take on the bipedal Fire/Fighting starters from Generations 3 through 5, particularly Emboar (which, coincidentally, can be caught in Alola).
** Its championship belt and overall build make it something of one to Machamp, another Pokémon that can be caught in Alola (coincidentally, both are a play on the HalfDressedCartoonAnimal trope, with Machamp being the shirtless variant and Incineroar being the pantsless variant). An event in ''Ultra Sun & Moon'' also has an NPC Incineroar named Tigrudo develop a rivalry with a Machamp named Macho 'Mon.
* EvilIsCool: InUniverse. Just like real-life {{heel}} wrestlers, Incineroar's "bad guy" persona makes it popular with children.
* {{Expy}}: Incineroar is an expy of ''Manga/TigerMask'', and even has a similar color scheme to Tiger Mask's EvilCounterpart Tiger the Dark.
* FaceOfAThug: Incineroar demonstrates its Dark-typing well with its persona of a heel wrestler. It even gets Intimidate as a hidden ability.
* FireBreathingDiner: Litten stores the highly-flammable fur it collects while grooming itself internally, and then hocks up flaming furballs to attack when the need arises.
* FireIsMasculine: Contrasting [[WaterIsWomanly Primarina]], Incineroar is a hot blooded, muscular, and boisterous wrestling tiger who favors physical attack and is a Fire-type.
* FourLegsGoodTwoLegsBetter: Unlike Litten and Torracat, Incineroar is bipedal. That being said, its speed is lower than its pre-evolutions.
* FighterMageThief: The Fighter of the Alolan starters in its final form. Its large build, high attack and defenses, as well as wrestling emphasis show it as the main physical powerhouse of the three.
* FriendToAllChildren: Incineroar loves the adoration they get from children despite acting nonchalant in their presence. This, like many of Incineroar's traits, is inspired by Manga/TigerMask, who discarded his heel persona to be an idol to children.
* FurIsClothing: Incineroar's torso fur resembles a wrestler tank-top with cut-off sleeves and the upper region of its head resembles a wrestler mask. The ring of fire around its torso resembles a championship belt.
* GeniusBruiser: Could possibly be the case, as Litten is described as being logical, and once evolved into Torracat, it gains enough strength to bend iron bars and knock out large men with a single swipe of its forelegs.
* GratuitousEnglish: The French and German translations give English names to Incineroar's Darkest Lariat and Malicious Moonsault ("Dark Lariat" and "Dark Body Press"/"Hyper Dark Crusher", respectively), possibly to give it the image of an [[{{Eagleland}} American]] Wrestling/{{WWE}} wrestler (which fits with Alola being based on Hawaii).
* GrinOfAudacity: When performing Incineroar's Z-move, the Pokémon makes this subtle grin before they summon a large wrestling ring.
* HalfDressedCartoonAnimal: Incineroar's torso resembles a sleeveless shirt, but its lower body is the same color as its head and arms, making it look pantsless. The fact that it vaguely resembles a sports mascot also helps seeing how a lot of sports mascots wear shirts but no pants.
* {{Heel}}: Incineroar is designed with this persona in mind. It is even known as the Heel Pokémon. Like many of its aspects this is inspired by Tiger Mask, who played a vicious heel in the ring to throw his enemies off the scent of his true identity. ''Anime/PokemonIChooseYou'' lampshades the "Incineroar is the bad guy" concept. Incineroar is TheAce of Ash's latest [[TheRival rival]], [[JerkAss Cross]], literally putting Incineroar into a position where the audience is ''supposed'' to root against him.
* HeroicBuild: Incineroar has a very muscular, humanoid build. Its legs are a bit on the thin side, though.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Incineroar acts tough, selfish, and unfeeling, and is even said to ignore its trainer's commands on a whim; but deep inside, it feels happiness when it's fawned over by kids and young Pokémon. Even when petted in a spot it doesn't like in Pokémon Refresh, it can't help but gently shoo away with a happy expression on its eyes after a brief moment of surprise.
* HonorBeforeReason: Despite its heel persona, Incineroar loses all will to fight opponents who are injured or otherwise too weak to fight it. It sometimes falls victim to opponents looking to exploit this.
* HotBlooded: Torracat has been described as having a fairly rambunctious, battle-loving personality. Incineroar is also this, to LargeHam levels, fitting for its {{heel}} status.
* HumanLikeFootAnatomy: Incineroar has plantigrade (sole-walking) feet like a human, rather than digitigrade (toe-walking) feet like a real tiger. It's especially inexplicable because both of its pre-evos, Litten and Torracat, are digitigrade.
* ImpromptuTracheotomy: It's the only Pokémon that can learn Throat Chop by level up, a powerful Dark-type move that prevents the opponent from using sound-based attacks for two turns.
* {{Kayfabe}}: Incineroar's heel persona is an act that it keeps up for the sake of its fans.
* LargeHam: Incineroar's idle animation involves it puffing out its chest and roaring towards the sky with its arms spread out.
* LifeDrain: For some reason, they can learn Leech Life via TM, which drains HP from a target. Incineroar can also learn Drain Punch via tutoring or TM.
* MaskedLuchador: Its build causes it to resemble a person wearing a tiger costume more than an actual tiger. Justified as it's based on ''Manga/TigerMask''.
* MeanCharacterNiceActor: Incineroar plays the {{Heel}} in battle, but secretly loves the attention it gets from kids.
* MightyGlacier: Incineroar has a great attack stat and good defenses, but has subpar speed. It's also ironically slower than its previous stages, who fall into FragileSpeedster. It also happens to be the slowest fully evolved Fire-Type Starter to date, beating out Emboar by five points, and the only starter to lose points in a stat upon evolving.
* MundaneUtility: [[http://pokejungle.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/image.jpeg The official model sheet for Incineroar]] includes a sketch where its belt is used to heat a kettle while it's asleep.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: Incineroar is an extremely buff bipedal tiger wrestler that's also [[CombatPragmatist darkness-aligned]] thanks to its {{heel}} motif.
* NotWorthKilling: Incineroar finds weak opponents boring and unworthy of fighting and only gets up for stronger opponents. Some opponents tend [[WoundedGazelleGambit to exploit this]] to gain an advantage.
* PantheraAwesome: Incineroar is based on a tiger.
* ThePhoenix: Whenever Litten needs to shed off its fur, its ''entire'' coat bursts into flames to make way for the new one to simulate the mystical firebird's reincarnation.
* PlayfulCatSmile: Torracat, unlike Litten, is constantly smiling like this.
* PlayingWithFire: Like many Fire type starters, it is their primary type. Litten makes fireballs out of its hairballs and has oily fur that bursts into flames when shed.
* PowerStereotypeFlip: Despite its fiery elemental powers, Litten has a very ''non''-fiery personality. Subverted with Torracat and Incineroar, though.
* PowerupLetdown: Zigzagged. When evolved, Incineroar's Attack power and durability skyrocket, but its Speed drops like a rock. Since Torracat's power is reasonable enough to make it a GlassCannon, your choice of evolving may ultimately come down to favored strategy.
* PunnyName:
** Litten's a lit kitten (or a little kitten). Torracat is a torrid cat, and "Tora" is also the Japanese word for "Tiger". Incineroar is Incinerate + Roar.
** Nyabby is a fiery (''hii'') meowing (''nyā'') tabby,, Nyaheat is fiery, meowing, and full of heat, and Gaogaen is a rather literal roaring (''gao'') flame (''kaen'').
** An Incineroar in Royal Avenue has the nickname of "Tigrudo", which is a combination of tiger and rudo (a term for "{{Heel}}" used in lucha libre).
* RecurringElement: The Alola fire starter, 7th generation.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: The whole line is red and black, and Incineroar is a Dark-type with a "bad guy" persona to play up.
* RunningOnAllFours: Despite being [[FourLegsGoodTwoLegsBetter primarily bipedal]], Incineroar does this in the anime from time to time, but inexplicably runs [[https://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/317/262/de7.gif more like a gorilla]] than an actual tiger.
* SecretArt:
** Only Incineroar can use the Z-move variant of Darkest Lariat, [[AlliterativeName Malicious Moonsault]][[note]]which is actually ''not'' a moonsault despite its English name, and is more of a 450 splash; the Japanese name, Hyper Dark Crusher, is more appropriate. Additionally, Z-crystals are not in ''Sword and Shield'', meaning that Malicious Moonsault is still exclusive to Incineroar.[[/note]]. Throat Chop was exclusive to it (and Sneasel via breeding) before it became a tutor move, and Darkest Lariat was its signature move until ''Sword and Shield'' made it a Technical Record and allowed other Pokémon to learn it.
** Like the Fire starters before them, they have Blast Burn and Fire Pledge.
* SignatureMove: The Dark-type move Darkest Lariat is associated with Incineroar (as it was its SecretArt in generation 7), although other Pokémon can learn it via TR in ''Sword and Shield''. Notably, the Pokémon that can learn it are mostly heavy and wide, or muscular... except for [[PintsizedPowerhouse Mew]].
* SleevesAreForWimps: Incineroar has some black tufts of fur around its shoulders that gives it the impression of it having ripped sleeves. This is especially fitting as its torso is supposed to resemble a tank top.
* SpinAttack: The animation for Darkest Lariat has Incineroar putting it's legs together and outstretching it's arms in a t-shape pose, before spinning towards its opponent and hitting them.
* SpoiledBrat: Torracat behaves like a spoiled child in front of trainers and Pokémon it has built a relationship with.
* SoulPower: Litten can learn Lick, a Ghost-type move, by level-up.
* StarterMon: The Fire-Type Starter of the Alola region.
* StealthPun:
** Incineroar is a heel wrestler. Heels in wrestling often evoke a certain reaction from fans to draw attention on the drama. This is called getting "heat". Incineroar is a Fire-type.
** While Incineroar's typing makes sense because heel wrestlers are considered villains in the professional wrestling scene since they use underhanded tactics, much like what you'd expect with a Dark type, people often say that it could have been a Fighting-type too. However, consider that professional wrestling [[{{Kayfabe}} tends to be scripted]]; there are no real "fights" so to say.
* TheStoic: Litten are [[{{Irony}} cool-headed]] and tend not to show their emotions, very much like fellow feline Pokémon Espurr and Meowstic from the previous generation. It stops being stoic when it evolves into Torracat.
* SwissArmySuperpower: Surprisingly enough, Incineroar can learn a plethora of multiple moves of various types like U-Turn, Leech Life, Earthquake, and the like. It could be interpreted as various wrestling moves.
* TopHeavyGuy: Incineroar's bulk is heavily exaggerated, having large upper arms, fingers, and body but surprisingly thin legs and forearms, with no muscle definition on any of its limbs. Its fingers are even thicker than its wrists. Torracat's front legs and paws are also much thicker than its hind ones.
* {{Tsundere}}: Incineroar. This is apparent when playing Pokémon Refresh. Whenever it has a negative reaction, it waves its hands telling you to stop it... all while showing happy eyes.
* TurnsRed: Like all Fire-type starters, it has the ability Blaze, which boosts the power of its Fire-type moves when it's low on health.
* VisualPun: Incineroar being a tiger wrestler brings to mind the famous [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_Mask_(professional_wrestling) Tiger Mask]] persona of several Japanese professional wrestlers. Said persona was inspired by the title character of ''Manga/TigerMask'', a professional wrestler who was a {{heel}} in the United States, but became a {{face}} after returning to Japan, in a similar fashion to Incineroar's HiddenHeartOfGold-hiding facade.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs:
** Its signature move is Darkest Lariat, a Dark-type move that ignores stat changes as it does damage. Incineroar's unique Z-Move, Malicious Moonsault, which converts its Darkest Lariat into it, has it climb up the ropes of a wrestling ring made out of energy before body-slamming its opponent while WreathedInFlames. This does double damage if the opponent has used Minimize. Additionally, Incineroar can learn plenty of Fighting-type moves.
** Incineroar's fighting style represents ''puroresu'', the Japanese take of the American-based professional wrestling (similar to characters like [[Franchise/StreetFighter R. Mika]]). One thing that defines this is despite his heel status, he is still cheered by the audience, as heels in puroresu operate in a slightly different way.

Alola's Water-type Starter, Popplio is a Water-type sea lion. It uses the water from its nose to attack. When it evolves into Brionne, it gains frills around its waist that resembles a dress of sorts. It is also a talented dancer who acts cheery and positive, even when it's feeling sad. Its final evolution is Primarina, a graceful Water/Fairy creature that resembles a mermaid or siren and attacks using songs.
----
* ActionInitiative: The line learns Aqua Jet and Baby-Doll Eyes by level up, two moves with increased priority. Aqua Jet may be a physical move, but on the Popplio line whom are generally slow, it can be helpful getting a jump on opponents. Baby-Doll Eyes gimps the opponent's attack, which can be another helpful tactic for the slow and physically squishy Primarina.
* AgentPeacock: Male Brionne and Primarina are just as feminine and fabulous as their female counterparts, and by virtue of their high special attack, just as deadly as well.
* AllAnimalsAreDogs: Popplio is a baby sea lion that acts like a puppy.
* ArmorPiercingAttack:
** Primarina's SecretArt Sparkling Aria can strike opponents hiding behind a substitute.
** Oceanic Operetta, being a Z-Move, cannot be blocked by Protect or any of its variants.
* BadassAdorable: Primarina is a very feminine and pretty Pokemon who sings beautiful songs, but is a exceptionally powerful mage, having the highest Special Attack and Special Defense of all the (Non-Mega) starters.
* BallBalancingSeal: Popplio is a sea lion-like Pokemon who is capable of balancing water bubbles on its nose. Additionally, its Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and German names are all portmanteaus of the words for ball and seal in the respective languages.
* BeautifulAllAlong: Evolving Popplio into a Primarina is quite the ugly duckling story. Popplio initially has very clownish looks with a rather large GagNose, but takes several levels in prettiness upon evolving. Brionne is significantly cuter with a frilly dress and GirlishPigtails, before finally becoming the very feminine and elegant singer Primarina, even getting [[LongHairIsFeminine long hair]]. Its nose gets smaller in comparison to its body through evolving to emphasize this further.
* ConfusionFu: Primarina has 126 Special Attack[[note]]this is the highest single stat of ''any'' fully-evolved Starter[[/note]] with the coverage to abuse it. It is capable of learning [[NonElemental Hyper Voice]], [[PsychicPowers Psychic]], [[SoulPower Shadow Ball]], [[GreenThumb Energy Ball]], [[AnIcePerson Ice Beam]], and any Hidden Power of its choice in addition to its Water and Fairy attacks.
* CriticalStatusBuff: The Popplio line have the Torrent ability, which increases their Water-type moves by 50% while left with 1/3rd of their health.
* CuteLittleFangs: Brionne has one. Primarina has two that can be seen briefly when it performs Oceanic Operetta.
* CuteMonsterGirl: Brionne and Primarina are extremely feminine. Popplio not so much. However, since they are starter Pokémon, they have a 7 to 1 male-to-female gender ratio, and look the same regardless of gender. Despite this, Primarina is often described and known as a ''songstress'' according to one of its Pokedex entries.
* DanceBattler: Brionne dances when fighting, confusing its opponents.
* DiscardAndDraw: Brionne gains the Fairy-Type upon evolving into Primarina. It loses resistance to Steel-Type moves and gains a Poison weakness, but gains lots of very useful prizes like new resistances to Dark, Fighting, and Bug, as well as an immunity to Dragon-Type moves.
* DissonantSerenity: After pummeling an opponent with its truly terrifying Z-Move, Primarina will take a bow.
* DistaffCounterpart: Primarina can be seen as a feminine counterpart to Samurott, despite the fact that they share a gender ratio; coincidentally, Samurott can be caught in Alola via Island Scan. Like Primarina, Samurott is partially based on a sea lion, and Primarina has very feminine TertiarySexualCharacteristics while Samurott has masculine ones (including prominent hair and headgear for both). Furthermore, Hisuian Samurott has a secondary typing of Dark, which is often depicted as a {{foil}} to the Fairy type that Primarina has.
* DynamicAkimbo: Popplio and Brionne like to haughtily puff up their chests during battle.
* FighterMageThief: The Mage of the Alolan starters. It has high special stats that power attacks with magical themes, but poor physical stats.
* GagNose: Popplio features a big, pink clown nose. As it evolves, however, it becomes smaller, emphasizing its shift from clown-like to beautiful.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Primarina's Ultra Moon entry says it is known as a ''songstress''. Not only can Primarina be male, but the vast ''majority'' of them are male.
* GirlishPigtails: Brionne's ears resemble pigtails, leading to its feminine appearance.
* HealingShiv: Sparkling Aria deals good damage, but also cures the burn status of those hit by it.
* HealThyself: Starting in ''Sword and Shield'', the Popplio line can learn Aqua Ring and Life Dew as Egg Moves. Also overlaps with HealItWithWater.
* AnIcePerson: Starting in ''Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon'', the line can learn Icy Wind by level up, in addition to the usual ice attacks that most water types can learn from [=TMs=]. Icy Wind in particular gives them a useful edge against Grass-Types and gimping faster opponents.
* InnocentSoprano: Primarina has a high-pitched voice, and like its previous evolutions, is shown to be kindhearted and optimistic. In fact, given that this trope originated in opera and is commonly found among its leading female roles, Primarina may have been given a soprano voice in part ''because'' of this archetype.
* LargeHam: Popplio's wide-eyed expressions, flamboyant "costume," and somewhat sassy "strongman" pose in its battle animation gives it this impression.
* LastDiscMagic: Unlike their fellow starters, Primarina doesn't get access to its secondary STAB (Fairy) until level 44, a whole ten levels after it evolves; until then it's stuck with the weak Disarming Voice it learned in the Popplio stage. However, the move it learns is the very powerful Moonblast, which is one of the strongest Fairy-Type attacks in the game and works very well with its high Special Attack.
* LongHairIsFeminine: Further emphasizing its feminine appearance, Primarina's hair is very long.
* {{Lunacy}}: The line naturally learns Moonblast by level-up. Primarina in particular gets STAB from the move due to being part Fairy-Type.
* MagicalClown: Popplio is a clownish Pokémon able to use [[MakingASplash water attacks]]. This aspect of its design dies down during its journey through evolution, transitioning from a circus-like performer focusing on acrobatics to a singer while the nose becomes smaller and the neck frill becomes a dress.
* MagicIdolSinger: Brionne is categorized as the Pop Star Pokémon, using balloons made of water to fight. Primarina, meanwhile, is more of a Magic Opera Singer (its {{Secret Art}}s are called Sparkling Aria and Oceanic Operetta, with "aria" and "operetta" being opera-related terms), and it can control the movements of these balloons with its song.
* MagicIsFeminine: The overly-feminine Primarina is the mage among the three Alolan starters, boasting high special attack compared to its counterparts.
* MakingASplash: Like many Water type starters, it is their primary type. Primarina is also the only Alola Starter whose signature attack and Z-Move are of its primary typing. Its hidden ability, Liquid Voice, turns all sound-based moves into Water-type moves.
* MagicMusic: Primarina's voice has the power to control water. If it has its Liquid Voice Ability, its voice literally becomes water.
* MightyGlacier: The line has great Special Attack and Special Defense — Primarina in particular boasts the highest Special Attack stat out of all the starters — but their Speed is lacking.
* MotherlySidePlait: When its WildHair isn't flowing, this is Primarina's default hairstyle, tied together with pearl strings, accentuating its feminine appearance.
* MusicalAssassin: The Popplio line can learn a myriad of sound-based moves, with Brionne and Primarina preferring to use their singing skills to attack opponents.
* NonIronicClown: Seems to be the basis for Popplio's design. It features a big red nose, a ring of fur around its neck resembling a frill, and it can create literal water balloons with an elastic coating.
* OurFairiesAreDifferent: Primarina has a secondary Fairy typing and a design based on mermaids.
* OurMermaidsAreDifferent: Primarina's appearance makes it look like a cross between a sea lion and a mermaid, and the emphasis on its singing is reminiscent of [[SirensAreMermaids sirens]].
* PerpetualSmiler: Popplio and Brionne's default expression is a big, goofy grin.
* PreciousPuppy: In addition to resembling a sea lion, Popplio's design is quite puppy-like due to its round nose and floppy ears, and it apparently barks like a dog.
* PunnyName:
** Popplio is a sea lion pup that creates poppable water pōpō (Hawaiian term for ball) and takes the Hawaiian monk seal's local name of "dog that runs in rough water" (ʻīlio-holo-i-ka-uaua) quite literally by [[AllAnimalsAreDogs acting like a literal puppy]], Brionne is an [[OurNymphsAreDifferent undine-like]] sea lion that performs with much ''brio'' (vivacity), and Primarina is a marine prima donna that can be found at a marina (another word for harbor).
** Ashimari is a sea lion (''ashika'') that can create and control watery balls (''mari''), Osyamari looks like a fashionable (''oshare'') and precocious young girl (''oshama'') that can also create and control watery balls, and Ashirene is a sea lion that strongly resembles a ''sirène'' (french for "[[SirensAreMermaids mermaid siren]]").
* RealMenWearPink: Blue in this case, but a male Primarina is no less powerful than any other Starter, having the highest Special stats out of any Non-Mega Starter.
* RecurringElement: Rounding out the starter trio as Gen 7's water-type starter.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Popplio's a little blue sea lion pup that looks ready for a circus act and it loves to play. Brionne is a little bigger but somehow becomes even cuter.
* SecretArt:
** Sparkling Aria, a move that heals the burns of any target it strikes, and [[AlliterativeName Oceanic Operetta]], the Z-Move derived from Sparkling Aria.
** Like the Water starters before them, they get Hydro Cannon and Water Pledge.
** The line has a unique Hidden Ability called Liquid Voice, which changes all of its sound-based moves to Water-type.
* SelkiesAndWereseals: Aside from Primarina's general [[OurMermaidsAreDifferent mermaid]] aesthetic, it also seems to draw inspiration from selkies, who are seals capable of transforming into beautiful women who sing for a variety of reasons.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Primarina is the sensitive guy to its Water-Type manly man predecessors. Primarina is a cute, elegant, and very feminine Water/Fairy-typed seal mermaid who uses the power of its singing voice to control water. In contrast to the dual cannon-wielding Blastoise, the ferocious Feraligatr, the bulky and monstrous Swampert, the prideful Water/Steel-typed Empoleon, Primarina's [[DistaffCounterpart Spear Counterpart]] Samurott, and the sleek and cool Greninja. Primarina is also the most specially-based Water-Type starter to date with very high Special stats, while its physical stats and speed are rather low.
* ShoutOut: Popplio is a clown, and its final evolution Primarina is an opera singer that does keep some clown-like elements (the round nose and frilly ruff). This may be an allusion to the famous opera ''Theatre/{{Pagliacci}}'', which is about a troupe of clowns.
* SilkHidingSteel: Primarina may look elegant and sing beautiful songs, but it also has the highest special attack stat (126, slightly edging out Inteleon's 125, and easily beating out Delphox's 114) out of any fully evolved, non-Mega Evolved starter.
* SirensAreMermaids: As its' Japanese names already denotes by referencing the French word for both, Primarina draws upon mermaids for its' physical appearance while having a MagicMusic voice like sirens.
* SituationalSword: Sparkling Aria's perks are rather different compared to those of the other starters' signature moves. It's an attacking move that heals a status condition, akin to Smelling Salts and Wake-Up Slap, but the damage it deals isn't boosted when healing burns unlike the other two. It also damages allies, so it isn't a very good choice to use to heal a burned teammate. [[ArtificialStupidity Despite this, an AI-guided Primarina will often attempt to use Sparkling Aria on a burned teammate despite the consequences.]] That said, a savvy player can make good use of it by pairing Primarina with a partner who has [[ElementalAbsorption Dry Skin, Water Absorb or Storm Drain]], though it won't heal a burned teammate. It also hits through Substitute, so it's up to the player to decide if potentially hitting through a Substitute is worth potentially healing an opponent's burn. On the plus side, at least it can put out burning Guts users..? This is less of a problem on a Liquid Voice Primarina using Hyper Voice instead, but this prevents Primarina from making use of its [[TurnsRed Torrent]] ability or its signature Z-Move Oceanic Operetta, which packs more punch than a regular Z-Hyper Voice.
* SnotBubble: Popplio can launch balloons made of water from its nose.
* SquishyWizard: An odd example of a MightyGlacier being combined with one. Primarina has decent HP and excellent special stats, but its physical defense is nothing stellar, and its speed is rather low.
* StarterMon: Alola's Water-Type Starter.
* StatusBuff: Has access to Work Up, which was only good for boosting both of its attack stats. Gen VIII gave the line access to the much more useful Calm Mind, allowing Primarina to boost it's already impressive Special stats instead.
* StepfordSmiler: Brionne always acts cheerful, even when it isn't feeling cheerful. It only expresses its true emotions to individuals it deeply trusts.
* SuperScream: Primarina's voice is described as its most powerful weapon, and the line gets plenty of sound moves such as Hyper Voice, Disarming Voice, and their SecretArt Sparkling Aria to back it up. Their hidden ability, Liquid Voice, makes all of their sound-based moves Water-type, therefore powering them up through STAB.
* SweetSeal: Popplio is an adorable seal pup who retains its cuteness as Brionne before evolving to a beautiful looking Primarina.
* TrueBlueFemininity: Brionne and Primarina are two very feminine (though not necessarily female) Water-Typed singing seals.
* TurnsRed: Like all Water-type starters, it has the ability Torrent, which boosts the power of its Water-type moves when it's low on health.
* UselessUsefulSpell: Its signature ability [[SuperScream Liquid Voice]], which changes all sound-based moves to Water-type moves, is this. Unlike similar abilities such as Galvanize or Aerilate that change a move's type, Liquid Voice does not power up the changed moves. The strongest sound-based move it can learn is Hyper Voice, a normal-type move with 90 Power, while its signature move, Sparkling Aria, has the exact same power and the same effect of hitting through Substitute. While Sparkling Aria still has the downside of potentially healing a burn, Primarina will still have its regular ability [[TurnsRed Torrent]] while having the same benefit Liquid Voice provides. Even if the user decides to forego Sparkling Aria for another Water-type move such as Hydro Pump, Surf, or Scald, Liquid Voice wouldn't be of any use.
* WaterIsWomanly: Unlike its peers, the muscular pro wrestler cat Incineroar (Fire) and the hooded archer owl Decidueye (Grass), Primarina is a beautiful, feminine, and elegant opera singer whose design evokes sirens and mermaids.
* WeaponizedBall: Popplio's {{Snot Bubble}}s can be used to attack its opponent, or even trap them inside. As the fully-evolved Primarina, it uses its voice to control water, and its signature Z-Move has it move and burst an enormous water ball on an opponent.
* WildHair: Primarina's hair tends to come out of its pearl ties during certain moves such as Sparkling Aria, showing its hair to be ''very'' wild, almost like the tentacles of an octopus. No explanation is given as to how its hair gets tied back up when the move is finished, though, albeit its possible the "pearl" ties are actually unnaturally hard bubbles (like the ones that are on Araquanid's legs) and thus Primarina can use its voice to reform them from water.
* WorkHardPlayHard: Popplio is described as both frivolous and hardworking. It's a circus performer that takes its job seriously, but it's still a circus performer.

As a Woodpecker Pokémon, Pikipek is a Normal/Flying-type that's capable of striking the opponent with a flurry of pecks. It can have Skill Link or Keen Eye as an ability. Pikipek tap on wood to communicate with others of their own kind and trainers can learn what the taps mean. As it evolves, its beak increases in size as well as strength. When it evolves into Toucannon, its beak has the power to destroy rock by blasting seeds from it. Its beak can even cause burns by simply touching it.
----
* AcrophobicBird: Oddly for a fully-evolved bird Flying-type, Toucannon remains on the ground almost entirely aside from some attack animations. This is TruthInTelevision: toucans are poor flyers due to their relatively short wings, usually hopping from tree to tree and gliding through the air when necessary.
* BareFistedMonk: Can learn Rock Smash by level-up, and Brick Break via TM. It's no Close Combat, but it can still cause Rock- and Steel-types expecting to tank its STAB moves to think twice about trying that.
* BeakAttack: They learn Peck, Pluck, and Drill Peck via level-up.
* BlowYouAway: As per usual with the early-route bird Pokémon, it's part Flying-type.
* BossBattle: Toucannon is the ace Pokémon of Elite Four Kahili.
* BulletSeed: Pikipek often attack by zipping seeds at opponents, and can do so with enough strength to embed the seeds in tree trunks. Toucannon can fire seeds with enough power to pulverize boulders. And yes, they do learn the TropeNamer attack.
* TheBusCameBack: Three of the twelve Pokémon who spent six years on the bus after ''VideoGame/PokemonUltraSunAndUltraMoon'' before coming back in "The Indigo Disk".
* ChargedAttack: Toucannon's SecretArt Beak Blast charges up at the start of the turn, then deals damage at the end of the turn. Any opponent making contact with it while in the process of charging up is burned.
* ComMons: Being the [[RecurringElement annual regional bird]], both Pikipek and Trumbeak can be found almost anywhere in Alola.
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: Both Pikipek and Tsutsukera effectively mean "pecking woodpecker", as if to make it especially clear how it's a woodpecker that can use BeakAttack moves.
* DevelopersForesight: Toucannon is always positioned at an angle, even in Pokemon Refresh, likely because its beak would otherwise obscure its face.
* DishingOutDirt: Trumbeak and Toucannon are able to learn Rock Blast as a Heart Scale move.
* EarlyBirdCameo:
** Literally. Pikipek's wire frame model appeared in the announcement trailer for ''Sun & Moon'', months before its official debut.
** Before Toucannon was revealed, a shirt featuring it was shown off in a trailer featuring clothing customization months before the game's release.
* FragileSpeedster: Pikipek and Trumbeak have excellent Attack and Speed for their stages, but low defenses. Averted when Trumbeak evolves into Toucannon.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration:
** Pikipek and Trumbeak have higher speed than their final stage Toucannon. This is likely because Toucannon has a huge and heavy beak that slows it down.
** Toucannon's ''Sun'' Pokédex entry states that its beak can reach temperatures of over 212 F or 100 C, and it can learn Overheat via TM.
** Many of the line's Pokédex entries refer to them eating berries and spitting the seeds at enemies. They learn Bullet Seed through leveling up.
* GlassCannon: Toucannon has great attack, but the rest of its stats aren't outstanding. They're decent enough to make it lean into MightyGlacier territory, though.
* GreenThumb: Learns Bullet Seed via level-up.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Its ability, Skill Link, allows it to always strike 5 times with multi-hit moves. The Toucannnon line learns a number of moves to abuse this, including Bullet Seed, Rock Blast, and Fury Attack.
* MeaningfulName:
** Pikipek combines "picus" (latin for woodpecker) with "peck", rather straightforward for a woodpecker, Trumbeak combines "trumpet" with "beak", possessing a long, trumpet-like beak it can produce intense sound with, and Toucannon is a toucan that shoots heated seeds from its' beak like a cannon.
** Tsutsukera and Kerarappa combine "woodpecker" (''keratsutsuki'') with "pecking" (''tsutsuki'') and "trumpet" (''rappa''), while Dodekabashi straight-up means "[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin huge toucan]]".
* MundaneUtility: It can't be done in the games, but it's been shown in the anime that Toucannon can use its beak, which is capable of reaching 100 degrees Celsius, to gently warm its eggs.
* NobleBirdOfPrey: Notable aversion. They're the second ComMon bird (the first being Unfezant, being based on a galliforme) to not be based on a bird of prey in their final stage.
* NonElemental: It's primarily a Normal-type.
* PerpetualFrowner: Toucannon is always seen as angry, even when you feed and pet it in favorable places in Pokémon Refresh.
* PlayingWithFire: While it's not a Fire-type, Toucannon can learn Flame Charge and Overheat via TM, likely because its beak is used as a heat sink.
* RecurringElement: The early flying ComMon in line with Pidgey.
* SecretArt: Beak Blast, a Flying-type move with high power but decreased ActionInitiative due to having to charge and heat up its beak. If the opponent makes physical contact when Toucannon is charging, they get burned.
* ShownTheirWork:
** The Pikipek lineup have two toes pointing forward and two pointing back, just like woodpeckers and toucans in real life.
** Trumbeak, which still retains Pikipek's woodpecker characteristics, evolving into the toucan-like Toucannon may seem strange, but this is logical because in real life, woodpeckers and toucans are related.
** Toucannon's signature move Beak Blast involves heating its beak before attacking, burning any Pokémon that makes contact with it before the attack launches. Real toucans use their large beaks to shed excess heat from their bodies.
** Toucannon's decreased speed and hesitancy to fly may seem odd for a fully-evolved bird Flying-type, but this makes sense because toucans can't fly very well due to their rather short wings.
* SpamAttack: Skill Link allows any multi-hit attack it uses to strike the maximum number of times. Considering it can get Fury Attack, Rock Blast, and Bullet Seed, this can be a very useful ability.
* SuperScream: Can learn Echoed Voice and Hyper Voice via level-up. It can also get Boomburst as an egg move if it's bred with a Noivern.
* ThievingMagpie: Pikipek loves and hoards shiny objects it finds.
* UselessUsefulSpell: While Sheer Force isn't a bad ability in and of itself, Toucannon just doesn't have the means to take advantage of it. Out of its entire movepool, only four moves actually benefit from the boost: Rock Smash, Flame Charge (both of which are laughably weak even with the boost), Steel Wing, and Flash Cannon (which uses Toucannon's inferior Special Attack and is thus outclassed by Steel Wing). As of ''VideoGame/PokemonUltraSunAndUltraMoon'', a few more moves became available that benefit from Sheer Force thanks to Move Tutors, namely Gunk Shot, Heat Wave, and Sky Attack. Even then, Skill Link is usually a better ability for Toucannon.

[[caption-width-right:240:Gumshoos]]

A Mongoose Pokémon. It's a Normal-type that's constantly hungry. It can also have Strong Jaw or Stakeout as an ability. It's a diminutive predator that's constantly on the hunt for food in its territory. It searches so much that it collapses if it doesn't find anything. Gumshoos' strategy for hunting could not be more different: it prefers to stay in one place and wait for prey to come to it.
----
* BarelyChangedDubName: The translation for Yungoos simply changes the PunnyName to be a lot less [[ShapedLikeItself on-the-nose]].
* BigEater: Yungoos digests food so quickly as to be always hungry. In contrast, once it evolves, it can go a long time without eating.
* CombatPragmatist: Their new Stakeout ability allows them to effectively ambush enemies, dealing double damage to foes entering or switching into battle.
* ComMons: Yungoos' bio explicitly states that it's very common in Alola and it's easy to catch one.
* DecompositeCharacter: This line and Zangoose are based off different facts about mongoose: Zangoose is their feud with snakes, and the Yungoos line is them as an invasive species.
* {{Determinator}}: Gumshoos is very patient in waiting for prey to come to it, rather then actively hunting like Yungoos.
* FantasticVermin: They were introduced to Alola to deal with another such strain of pests, [[DidntThinkThisThrough but wound up also becoming invasive]] after the Rattata and Raticate changed their lifestyles to become nocturnal in order to evade them.
* FourLegsGoodTwoLegsBetter: Zig-zagged. While Gumshoos does stand on its hind legs unlike its pre-evolution, its idle animation shows it losing its balance and dropping to all four of its legs for a few moments. It's also listed in the quadruped body-style according to the PokéDex. Walking with it in the Let's Go feature in ''Scarlet & Violet'' shows that even though Gumshoos stands on two legs, it still runs on all-fours.
* FromBadToWorse: Their feud with Rattata for territory caused the latter to become part Dark-types.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: You can only find Yungoos and Gumshoos during the day; at night, the Alolan Rattata and Raticate take their place. This reflects the in-game lore of how the former was brought in to control the population of the latter, which backfired when Alolan Rattata and Raticate adapted by becoming nocturnal.
* GlassCannon: It has a great attack stat and okay HP, but its remaining stats are terrible, meaning it likely won't survive long or be fast enough to do much.
* GoneHorriblyWrong: They were introduced to Alola to try to keep the Rattata population under control. It worked at first, until the Rattata adapted by becoming nocturnal to avoid the diurnal Yungoos. Not only does the original problem still exist, but Alola now has ''another'' invasive species to worry about.
* HairTriggerTemper: Whenever Yungoos is hungry, it's angry, and since it's always hungry... luckily, by the time it evolves into Gumshoos, it's learned to tone it down a little.
* KingMook: Totem Gumshoos, who serves as an obstacle in Verdant Cave in ''Sun''. In ''Moon'', Totem Alolan Raticate takes its place.
* ManBitesMan: It can get Strong Jaw as one of its abilities.
* MisplacedWildlife: An InUniverse example; the line is alien to the Alola region, and was introduced in a misguided attempt to control the population of Rattata. Information on Yungoos heavily implies that the line became invasive.
** Averted in [[VideoGame/PokemonScarletAndViolet Paldea]], since according to the ''Scarlet'' and ''Violet'' Pokédex entries, it's implied that the line is actually native in that region.
* NonElemental: They're pure Normal-type based off mongooses.
* ObsessedWithFood: Yungoos deals with constant hunger, as reflected in its physiology. Having strong fangs and a long stomach enable it to eat and digest even the hardest of objects. However, the pain of always being hungry thanks to its fast metabolism means it's usually livid.
* PrivateDetective: Gumshoos is inspired by this aesthetic, with its fur resembling a trench coat and flat cap, its English name being [[PunnyName a play on the term Gumshoe]], it's Japanese name ''outright meaning'' [[MeaningfulName detective mongoose]], and its tendency to stakeout areas where its prey tends to travel to find a meal.
* PunnyName: Yungoos/Youngoose references both "young" and ''[[JapaneseDelinquents yankī]]'', being young mongeese with a [[HairTriggerTemper highly aggressive attitude]] and no respect for patience, something they grow out of after becoming Gumshoos.
* RecurringElement: The rodent-like grounded ComMon in line with Rattata. Interestingly, Yungoos was originally introduced to Alola to control the Rattata population, but the intent backfired horribly.
* ScaryTeeth: Both possess sets of giant chompers that are always on display.
* ShownTheirWork:
** Yungoos and Gumshoos [[MisplacedWildlife are not native to the Alola region]]; they were imported to keep the explosive population of another species in control, much like how mongooses were imported to Hawaii to deal with the rat population. However, rats are nocturnal and mongoose are diurnal, so the two species never came into contact with each other, and the mongooses instead began eating the native birds and turtle eggs. In the Pokémon universe, Yungoos was brought in to control the population of Rattata, but Rattata eventually became nocturnal to avoid their predators, causing Yungoos become a problem themselves.
** Gumshoos has horizontal pupils, just like mongooses in real life.
** The line is native to the Paldea region. This makes sense since the Egyptian mongoose can be found in the Iberian Peninsula, which the Paldea region is based on.[[note]]Theories on how they got there range from introduction by the Romans or Muslims to the species crossing over to the Iberian Peninsula from North Africa during the Pleistocene when sea levels were lower.[[/note]]
* SecretArt: The ability Stakeout was exclusive to them until the Nickit line came along.

A line of Bug-type Pokémon. Grubbin have huge jaws that it uses to burrow through soil. They can produce a sticky thread which they use to swing around. They also love electricity. Grubbin evolves into Charjabug, which resembles a battery and gains the Electric-type, which in turn evolves into Vikavolt, a stag beetle that resembles a jet fighter mech combo.
----
* BigCreepyCrawlies: Grubbin is an over foot-long stubby beetle grub. It's also pretty heavy at 9.7 lbs. Charjabug is only a little longer but weighs in at a good 23 lbs. Vikavolt is nearly five feet in size and weighs 99 lbs.
* BuildingSwing: Grubbin can spit sticky thread from its mouth and swing from tree to tree.
* {{Flight}}: Though Vikavolt is not a Flying-type, it [[GameplayAndStorySegregation (supposedly)]] can fly at high speed with its wings, and possesses the Levitate ability.
* FourLeggedInsect: Vikavolt has the anatomy of a real life stag beetle, with the exception of its number of legs.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: Grubbin normally live underground, and they learn Dig via level-up.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Although Vikavolt's ''Sun'' Pokédex entry says that it "zips" around while flying, it has a terribly slow Speed stat of 43. Though this might actually be that while Vikavolt ''moves'' fast, its low speed stat is referring to it needing to charge its electric beams for a few seconds before firing.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: A Charjabug's eyes aren't those square blue shapes; rather, they serve as a film protecting its real eyes. If you hit Charjabug in Pokémon Refresh, its real eyes will light up in an angry glare behind the blue films.
* JapaneseBeetleBrothers: As evidenced by its Japanese name, Vikavolt is a stag beetle like Pinsir. According to Heracross' ''Ultra Sun'' dex, it shares a Type B Rival relationship with it, which is Rhinoceros Beetle. Their rivalry is so big, Heracross' relation with Pinsir is changed with Type A; as both have trouble with Vikavolt, Alolan Heracross and Pinsir ally with each other.
* KingMook: A Totem Vikavolt appears as part of the trial in Hokulani Observatory in ''Sun and Moon''.
* LightningGun: Vikavolt is described as being capable of firing beams of electricity from its jaws.
* LivingBattery: Charjabug's ability to naturally store electricity means it can be used as a battery by other Pokémon, such as its evolution Vikavolt. Charjabug even has a unique ability called "Battery" which raises the power of its ally's special moves.
* MagikarpPower: Downplayed for both:
** Though its power and movepool are surprisingly good compared to the standard pre-evolved Bug type, Grubbin's other stats are low and it lacks the Electric type and wider movepool of its evolved forms.
** While Charjabug has decent enough stats (a higher base stat total than the fully evolved Butterfree, in fact), its Special Attack is nothing compared to Vikavolt's. You're likely to get a Charjabug before you leave the second island (it's unavailable on the first), but it only evolves into Vikavolt at Vast Poni Canyon, one of the final areas of the game. You can mitigate this by giving it an Eviolite and heightening its already decent defenses, however. In ''Ultra Sun and Moon'', Blush Mountain allows Charjabug to evolve, making Vikavolt easier to access earlier.
* MightyGlacier: Vikavolt has an amazing Special Attack stat and okay defenses, but it is terribly slow, though this can be mitigated through the use of Agility, which it gets via level-up.
* MundaneUtility: Charjabug's ''Sun'' Pokédex entry mentions that campers use it as a natural battery.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: The Japanese name is ''kuwagata''[[labelnote:*]]Japanese generic term for stag beetle[[/labelnote]] + ''cannon''.
* OneHitKill: Vikavolt naturally learns Guillotine, a move that would OHKO any Pokemon that isn't Ghost-type or has Sturdy if it manages to land a hit with its 30% accuracy.
* RailGun: Vikavolt's jaws resemble the exaggerated double-railed design model of railguns commonly seen in pop culture sci-fi. [[SubvertedTrope It's heavily leaning more towards]] LightningGun, though.
* RecurringElement: Grubbin's line is the regional three-stage Bug-type line with a pupal middle stage. However, unlike most regional bugs, Charjabug evolves via a method other than leveling up, requiring it to level up in Vast Poni Canyon (or Blush Mountain in ''Ultra Sun and Moon'') [[note]]which also will allow Magneton to evolve into Magnezone and Nosepass into Probopass[[/note]], on the fourth island of the Alola region. To compensate for this, both Grubbin and Charjabug are much more capable than [[MagikarpPower the pre-evolutions of most previous regional bugs.]]
* {{Retcon}}: Gen 8 changed Charjabug's evolution method from having to level up in a specific (and often hard to find) location to simply giving it a Thunder Stone.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Grubbin is a chubby little bug with stubby arms and pincers. Charjabug looks — and sounds — like a bus.
* TheRival: According to the Japanese Pokémon website, Vikavolt is apparently Pinsir's rival in Alola.
* SecretArt: A rare case in which only the middle stage evolution gets an exclusive ability, Battery. An ability which boosts the power of the ally's special move by 30%.
* ShockAndAwe: Grubbin loves electricity, and can often be found at power plants. Its evolutions later gain the Electric-type.
* ShoutOut: Vikavolt's name and design bears a strong resemblance to the [[VideoGame/{{Gradius}} Vic Viper]]. Not only does its jaws look like the Vic Viper's frontal fins; its jaws even function as a WaveMotionTuningFork.
* StatusBuff: Vikavolt can learn Agility, which sharply raises its Speed. Given how slow Vikavolt is, Agility can patch its speed issue.
* ShownTheirWork: The coloration of Grubbin is exactly that of the [[http://lh4.ggpht.com/GSUW8zBokcRloTI10QEd6r_g1w2bxz1boUaGu5ARYZqD_hterSRxR4BkLZiP9lECxDmaY4jo_olHmtqBArKc=s580 larva]] of a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asiatic_rhinoceros_beetle Asiatic/Coconut rhinoceros beetle]]. These beetles are found in Japan and various Pacific islands, particularly Hawaii.
* TalkingAnimal: Totem Vikavolt says: ''"Heeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeee!"'' when it arrives at Hokulani Observatory.
* ThunderBeetle: Vikavolt, which resembles a cross between a beetle and a railgun and uses its clamp-like jaws as a WaveMotionTuningFork to shoot lightning.
* TunnelKing: Grubbin uses its jaws to burrow through the earth.
* TurnsRed: Grubbin's ability, Swarm, boosts the power of its Bug-type moves when its health drops below a certain point.
* WaveMotionTuningFork: Vikavolt uses its jaws to control the beams of electricity it blasts out from its mouth.

Crabrawler is a land crab-like Fighting type Pokémon that is known for packing a massive wallop with its balled pincers. They have a pugnacious personality and love to fight one another over berries. They evolve into Crabominable, a ''literal'' Yeti Crab that is a Fighting/Ice type. They get this way by either climbing to the highest point in the Alola region or being exposed to an Ice Stone in the Paldea region.
----
* AnArmAndALeg: Occasionally, Crabrawler may lose one of its claws in battle, and presumably they grow back. They are also said to be delicious as well. Crabominable even has the ability to launch its pincers like a rocket fist.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: Crabominable takes on some yeti-like appearances: In addition to the white fur, it sports abs and pecs which wouldn't be out of place on an ape and its claws even have a footprint design, a common reference in bigfoot and yeti lore.
* BareFistedMonk: Crabrawler are pure Fighting-types and surprisingly not Water-type (though considering the type of crab it's based on, it does make sense). They're even called the Boxing Pokémon, and can have Iron Fist as an ability.
* BigfootSasquatchAndYeti: Crabominable is a literal take on "yeti crab", to the point that the only thing crab-like about it are its legs and pincers.
* BloodKnight: As a general rule, Crabrawler love to fight.
* BossBattle:
** Crabrawler acts as Kahuna Hala's ace. It evolves into Crabominabe in his later matches.
** Crabominable is the ace Pokémon of Kofu, Paldea's Water-type Gym Leader located in Cascarrafa; he uses Terastal to make it fit his type specialty.
* BoxingBattler: Its main fighting style is boxing.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration:
** Crabrawler gather at berry trees and compete for the ripe fruit that falls on the ground. In ''Sun and Moon'', a Crabrawler may attack a player who tries to pick from piles of berries.
** Crabrawler love to aim for the highest thing to climb. In ''Scarlet and Violet'', the one place they can be found outside of beaches is the slopes of Glaseado Mountain.
* GlassCannon: Other than Attack and HP, Crabominable's stats range from average to bad. The Ice typing it gains upon evolution does it few favors either: offensively, it would be strong against nine types, but the Ice type adds a few new weaknesses and even removes a resistance to Rock attacks. On top of that, Crabominable is even slower than the already-slow Crabrawler.
* GiantEnemyCrab: It's a large boxing crab.
* AnIcePerson: Crabominable's secondary type is Ice. Putting aside the Alolan forms of the Sandshrew and Vulpix lines, it is the only Ice-type introduced in Gen VII.
* LiteralMinded: Crabrawler love to aim for the top. Not just in social standing, but physically as well, since they love to climb up tall things. In the Alola region, they even need to climb to the highest mountain peak to evolve into Crabominable.
* MakingASplash:
** Despite not being Water-types, they do actually learn a number of Water-type moves through level up, including Crabhammer. Crabominable is also the only Ice-type Pokémon capable of learning Scald.
** The line is one of the few non-Water types to be in any of the Water Egg Groups (They're in Water 3).
** Fittingly, Crabominable is also the ace Pokémon of Kofu, the Water-type Gym Leader of the Cascarrafa Gym in Paldea, which he Terastalizes into a Water-type.
* {{Retcon}}: [[VideoGame/PokemonScarletAndViolet Gen IX]] changed Crabrawler's location-based evolution method into giving it an Ice Stone, making it much easier to get hold of Crabominable.
* RocketPunch: The Pokédex states that Crabominable can lop off its own pincers and fire them like rockets, though it only does so [[DesperationAttack out of desperation]].
* SecretArt: Ice Hammer, an Ice-type version of Hammer Arm that only Crabominable can learn.
* ShownTheirWork:
** It seems a little strange that Crabrawler isn't a Water-type, but there are many species of land crabs, which, as the name suggests, live on land (as long as they have a moist environment to breathe in). They can even drown if they're submerged.
** Much of Crabrawler's behaviour is based on that of the coconut crab, having a diet of fleshy fruits, as well as clinging and climbing up vertical surfaces.
** Crabominable is based on the ''Kiwa hirsuta'' species of crab, which is dubbed by scientists "the yeti crab".
* SpiritedCompetitor: Every Crabrawler is driven to be the best of its kind.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Berries, to the point that it fights others of its kind for ripe ones. Wild ones can only be found underneath berries that are piled under fruit trees.
* UselessUsefulSpell: Crabominable's typing and stat spread render it slow and very fragile, which means it will likely not get a chance to make much use of Anger Point should it be activated (if the critical hit doesn't outright wipe it out).
* VisualPun: Crabominable is a literal yeti crab.
* TheWorfEffect: Crabrawler's debut trailer on Twitch had it punching out various Legendaries and Mega Evolved Pokémon.

A bird Pokémon with four unique forms. The different flowers and their nectar that can be found on each of the different islands has produced four different forms of Oricorio, each with a different typing and temperament. Baile-style Oricorio are Fire/Flying, Pom-Pom-style are Electric/Flying, Pa'u-style are Psychic/Flying, while Sensu-style are Ghost/Flying.
----
* ADogNamedDog: Baile Style Oricorio. "Baile" means "Dance" in Spanish, and it's overall not indicative of the style the form it's actually based on - that being flamenco.
* BlowYouAway: With all four of its forms being part Flying, Oricorio can make good use of wind-based moves such as Air Slash and Hurricane.
* DanceBattler: Each of their forms performs a different kind of dance and uses it as a technique in battle. Their ability is even called Dancer, which copies any dancing attacks.
* ElementalPunch: According to its ''Moon'' Dex entry, Pom-Pom Style Oricorio generates electricity and delivers shocking punches to foes. [[GameplayAndStorySegregation It is unable to learn Thunder Punch]] (or ''any'' Electric-type moves outside of Revelation Dance), though.
* FeatherFingers: Sort of. In each of the forms, the feathers on its wings resemble various props or hand gestures that the various styles of dances have. They are somehow still able to fly despite this.
* FragileSpeedster: Oricorio is fast, but with poor defenses.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Passionate Baile Style (Choleric), quiet and collected Sensu Style (Melancholic), friendly Pom-Pom Style (Sanguine), and mellow Pa'u Style (Phlegmatic).
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: Their form differences are related to a diet of the flowers native to their environment. Gameplay-wise, the flowered areas they're found at produce nectar that players can use to change their form at will.
* GhostlyAnimals: Sensu Style Oricorio is a Ghost type based on Hawaiian honeycreepers. Oricorio's other three forms are not Ghost types, however.
* HealThyself: It can learn Roost to restore half of its health.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Since Dancer allows it to copy other Dance moves, it will copy Cresselia's Lunar Dance... which will promptly cause it to faint. Ouch.
* HotBlooded: Baile Style Oricorio is passionate in its dances and scatters its fiery down as it dances.
* MagicDance: Aside from Revelation Dance, Sensu Style invokes local spirits with their dancing for SoulPower.
* MasterOfNone: It has solid Special Attack and Speed, but its other stats are okay at best. In addition, it can't learn any attacking moves of its secondary types outside of Revelation Dance, and starting in ''Scarlet and Violet'', Icy Wind.
* MindOverMatter: Psychic-type Pa'u style. It resembles a hula dancer. Its gentle, swaying dance increases its psychic energy, which it then fires at enemies.
* MythologyGag: Sensu Style Oricorio being based on Japanese fan dancing is said to remind people from Kanto of their home, with that region itself being based off of a region of Japan.
* {{Necromancer}}: According to its ''Moon'' Dex entry, Sensu Style Oricorio summons the dead with its elegant dance and draws power from their malice.
* PlayingWithFire: Fire-type Baile Style. It resembles a flamenco dancer. It beats its wings to create fire and bathes opponents in flames with its dance.
* PowerCopying: Oricorio can learn Mirror Move. The Dancer ability also allows it to immediately copy any dance move, including the ones it can't normally learn, such as Petal Dance.
* RazorWind: It can learn Air Cutter and Air Slash.
* SecretArt: The ability Dancer, which copies any dancing move used by another Pokémon on the field, is unique to Oricorio. Likewise, Oricorio is the only Pokémon able to learn the move Revelation Dance, which changes type based on Oricorio's style.
* ShockAndAwe: Electric-type Pom-Pom Style. It resembles a cheerleader. It creates electric charges by rubbing its feathers and delivers them to enemies through shocking punches.
* ShownTheirWork: In ''Pokémon Scarlet and Violet'', only Baile Oricorio can be commonly found in the wild (while Pom-Pom is available too, it's a very rare sight, and you will need to buy the nectar items to get Pa'u and Sensu). This makes sense. since Paldea is based on Spain, the country where flamenco was born. Oricorio Pokédex entries in Scarlet and Violet make reference to this situation.
* SoulPower: Sensu Style is a Ghost-type and resembles a geisha dancer.
* SupportPartyMember: Dancer also kicks in if an ally uses a dancing move, so pairing Oricorio with an ally with such moves in Double Battles can result in both your Pokémon getting a buff or, in the case of two Oricorio (or Oricorio + Volcarona), attacking at once without wasting a turn.
** [[HoistByHisOwnPetard Of course, if Oricorio witnesses a Lunar Dance while in battle...]]
* TorosYFlamenco: Baile Style is based on flamenco dancers.
* UselessUsefulSpell: As its only Ability is Dancer, it is not a wise idea to give Oricorio a Choice item. Due to the way Choice items work, if Dancer is triggered, the move Oricorio tries to copy will fail because it's locked to another move.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Oricorio learns exactly ''zero'' moves that get a STAB bonus on any of its styles' primary types. They instead get Revelation Dance, whose type is the same as the user's primary type (meaning Oricorio always gets a STAB bonus by using it) and happens to be strong enough to work as a replacement for moves such as Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, Psychic, and Shadow Ball (the latter of which is actually weaker than a Ghost-type Revelation Dance).

A tiny yellow and white Bug/Fairy-type Pokémon that resembles a bee fly. They seem to be attracted to auras given off by people, Pokémon, and especially plants. They gather nectar from these plants.
----
* AuraVision: Cutiefly can sense the auras of creatures and plants.
* BigCreepyCrawlies: Cutiefly is part Bug-type, and while it may be a very small Pokémon, it's still much larger than the actual animal it's based on. Ribombee is even larger, though still small (being 8 inches tall (0.2 m) and weighing 1 pound (half a kilogram).
* BlowYouAway: It can learn Fairy Wind.
* CombatMedic: A Pokémon that can learn one of the only (if not ''the'' only) moves that can be used both offensively, and to heal allies. Pollen Puff is perhaps one of the greatest reasons to get one.
* DiesWideOpen: When it faints, Ribombee's eyes [[EmptyEyes go a solid, vacant black]].
* TheEmpath: It's capable of sensing the emotions of humans and other Pokémon. If there is a strong sense of happiness or sadness in a town, they'll often leave their meadow homes to congregate in or around buildings.
* FragileSpeedster: The line has a pretty awesome speed stat and a workable Special Attack stat. Its so-so Special Defense can be improved with Quiver Dance, but its HP and Defense are below average.
* FunSize: Cutiefly is tied with several Pokémon as the smallest of all, while Ribombee is tied with Polteageist as the smallest Pokémon that has evolved and cannot evolve any further.
* HealingShiv: Pollen Puff is a 90 Power Bug-type attack when used on an opponent, but restores 1/2 of the target's HP if used on an ally instead.
* KingMook: A Totem Ribombee serves as the as Totem Pokémon of Mina's trial in ''Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon''.
* LightEmUp: One of the few Pokémon that can learn Dazzling Gleam by leveling up. It can also learn Moonblast via breeding, and Solar Beam, Sunny Day, Light Screen, and Reflect via TM.
* {{Lunacy}}: Cutiefly can learn Moonblast through breeding.
* MagicDance: One of the few Pokémon that can learn Quiver Dance, which raises Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed by one stage each.
* OurFairiesAreDifferent: Cutiefly is a wispy little Bug/Fairy type that looks like a bee mixed with a puffball, and Ribombee resembles a traditional insect-winged humanoid pixie by way of being a humanoid insect.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: Ribombee is easily the smallest fully-evolved Pokémon ever, at just 8 inches/0.2 meters tall — the same size as Diglett, which held the title of smallest Pokémon for four generations until Joltik came along (since tied by Flabébé and, of course, Cutiefly). Even moreso is the [[KingMook Totem Ribombee]] fought in Mina's trial in ''Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon'', as it's not only the final Totem Pokemon in the Island Challenge, but it's the only one that gets a ''+2 boost in all stats'', and while significantly larger than a regular Ribombee, it's still just as tall as a Pikachu (0.4 meters).
* PunnyName:
** Cutiefly's English name is a pun on "cutie pie" and "fly". Its Japanese name Abuly is part SdrawkcabName of ''tsuriabu'' (bee fly) part pun on "lovely fairy".
** Ribombee's English name is a pun on ribbon and ''Bombyliidae'', the family name for bee flies. Its Japanese name Aburibbon does the same by combining the Japanese name of the fly family with ribbon in GratuitousEnglish.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: "Cute" is in Cutiefly's English name, after all. Cutiefly is a tiny little bee fly with large eyes and long stubby limbs, and Ribombee... is still a little bee fly with large eyes and stubby limbs, only now it also resembles a pixie in a scarf.
* ScarfOfAssKicking: Ribombee appears to be wearing a scarf, and it's one of the few speedy Pokémon introduced in Generation VII and learns Quiver Dance, so it definitely can do a lot of damage.
* SecretArt: Pollen Puff, a 90 Power Bug-type attack that will heal instead of doing damage if used on allies.

[[caption-width-right:240:Dusk Form Lycanroc]]
->[-''Dusk Form Lycanroc debuts in ''Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon-]

A Rock-type dog Pokémon. Rockruff closely resembles a Hawaiian Poi, Shiba Inu, or another Spitz-type. It howls when it is close to evolving and is said to leave its trainer and then come back once it is fully evolved. Its evolution Lycanroc has two forms: a wolf-like Midday form and a werewolf-like Midnight form. What form it changes into depends on which version you're playing. ''Pokémon Sun'' will have the Mid-day form while ''Pokémon Moon'' has the Midnight form. In ''Ultra Sun'' and ''Ultra Moon'', it has an additional third form known as Dusk form, which resembles an orange Midday form, but with both Midday and Midnight's mane (plus its green eyes glow red like Midnight's when it uses special attacks).
----
* ActionInitiative: Midday and Dusk Lycanroc's signature move, Accelerock, allows them to strike first.
* AllYourPowersCombined: Dusk Lycanroc can use both Midday Lycanroc's Accelerock and Midnight Lycanroc's Counter.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: A subtle one, but the way Midday Lycanroc's rocks are arranged in its mane makes it look like the sun while Midnight Lycanroc's mane looks like a crescent moon. Dusk Lycanroc has both, since it signifies the transition between day and night.
* BadassAdorable: Rockruff is a cute puppy Pokémon with loner tendencies, which is also noted to be very enduring.
* BloodKnight: Midnight Form Lycanroc ''loves'' to fight, and it's said that the stronger the enemy is, the more excited it gets. Similarly Dusk Form Lycanroc has a hidden intense fighting spirit and relishes in close quarters combat.
* BossBattle: Kahuna Olivia uses a Midnight Lycanroc as her ace.
* BringIt: Midnight Form Lycanroc does a two-handed version of this gesture when idle for a while.
* CombatPragmatist: Midnight form Lycanroc, despite not being a Dark-type, specializes in fighting dirty by trying to coax the enemy into attacking it and punishing them with a powerful counter attack.
* ConfusionFu: Rockruff is the only standard Pokémon with four different abilities[[note]]Keen Eye: Immune to accuracy drops, Vital Spirit: Prevents sleep, Steadfast: Boosts Speed with every flinch, and Special Rockruff have Own Tempo: Prevents confusion[[/note]] without any visible form differences itself, and each one has a unique, practical effect. This can make it very hard to know what sort of tactics will work on it beforehand.
* CounterAttack: Midnight and Dusk form Lycanroc can learn Counter.
* CuddleBug: Rockruff loves to cuddle with the people it likes, but its rocky collar is rather abrasive and may hurt them.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Despite Midnight Lycanroc's intimidating appearance and dirty tactics, it can have a sense of deep trust for its Trainer if it's trained properly. It will also express scorn if it receives commands it doesn't agree with or if it's forced to fight.
* {{Determinator}}: Rockruff refuses to give up in fights.
* DishingOutDirt: Rockruff and its evolutions are Rock-types, with Rockruff having a fluffy mane with little rocks that resemble a bone collar. When it evolves, these little rocks grow and extend into sharp spikes that can be used for attacks. And a Midday Lycanroc can use the power of the Sandstorm weather condition to double its Speed with the Sand Rush ability.
* EarlyBirdCameo: An overworld model for Rockruff was briefly shown in the starter Pokémon reveal trailer, several weeks before it was officially revealed.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Midnight Lycanroc may be a CombatPragmatist BloodKnight so enthusiastic about battles its eyes glow red, but even it has standards on how to fight in those battles, and may begin to resent a Trainer that gives orders it finds disagreeable or outright forces it to battle.
* {{Foil}}: Lore-wise, the Midday and Midnight forms have contrasting characteristics. Midday Lycanroc is a NobleWolf that prefers to avoid unnecessary conflicts and is associated with the sun, while Midnight Lycanroc is more of a SavageWolf that loves to fight and is associated with the moon. The attacks that it learns also reflect this, as Accelerock is a higher priority move that allows Midday to act first while Counter is a lower priority move that lets Midnight move after the opponent.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Rockruff is stated to become Midday Lycanroc due to ThePowerOfTheSun exuded by Solgaleo, implicating the inverse leading to Midnight Lycanroc. This foreshadows similar factors playing into the evolution of Cosmoem being dependent on what version it evolves in.
* FourLegsGoodTwoLegsBetter: Rockruff, Midday Lycanroc and Dusk Lycanroc are quadrupeds and subsequently closer to average animals in demeanor. Midnight Lycanroc is bipedal, somewhat more stylized in appearance, and [[{{Inverted}} notably more savage]].
* FragileSpeedster: Midday Lycanroc has a pretty good Speed stat, but bad defenses. Dusk Lycanroc has virtually identical stats to the Midday one, but it has ever so slightly higher Attack and lower Speed (a difference of a mere two points in each stat).
* GlassCannon: Despite the different stat spreads and the fact that Midnight Lycanroc was meant to be more defensive, both final forms still fit this because they both have 115 Attack and Midnight Lycanroc's augmented defenses are still only a middling 75. Midnight Lycanroc additionally suffers from low Speed compared to Midday Lycanroc, making all of its stats but Attack unremarkable.
* HotBlooded: Lycanroc's Midnight form gets more pumped up in battle the stronger its opponent is; it doesn't mind getting hurt for the sake of victory.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Rockruff has blue eyes, representing its innocence as a puppy. It keeps this eye color if it evolves into Lycanroc's midday form, signifying its noble personality.
* {{Keet}}: Fittingly for a young, playful dog brimming with energy and a refusal to give up in fights, Rockruff's abilities are Vital Spirit and Keen Eye, which prevent sleep and the loss of accuracy whilst ignoring a foe's heightened evasion respectively. This aspect of its design is noticeably more played up than previous dog Pokémon.
* LightningBruiser: The event Rockruff/Dusk Lycanroc distributed for ''VideoGame/PokemonUltraSunAndUltraMoon'' knows the event-exclusive move Happy Hour; which, when used as a Z-Move, boosts all its stats by one stage, comfortably pushing it into this territory when combined with its already good Attack and Speed.
* LivingMoodRing: Dusk Form Lycanroc's eyes are normally a brilliant green, but [[RedEyesTakeWarning they turn red when it attacks or gets enraged.]]
* {{Lunacy}}: Rockruff only evolves into Midnight Lycanroc in ''Pokémon Moon'' via the influence of Lunala, and it's a SavageWolf.
* MeaningfulAppearance: Dusk Form Lycanroc's eyes are green, representing its rare nature and [[ShownTheirWork the green flash event that occurs at dusk]].
* NobleWolf: Both Midday Lycanroc and Dusk Lycanroc are described to be very loyal to their Trainer and Midday Lycanroc prefers to avoid unnecessary conflicts by living alone.
* NobodyTouchesTheHair: Midnight Lycanroc reacts negatively to having his mane petted in Pokémon Refresh.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: If your Rockruff has become uncharacteristically aggressive and begun to howl at the setting sun, it's probably about to evolve.
* OurWerewolvesAreDifferent: Lycanroc's Midnight form resembles the popular conception of a werewolf with thin, lanky arms and large hands. The fact that Rockruff only evolves into Midnight Lycanroc in ''Pokémon Moon'' due to the influence of Lunala, who's strongly associated with the moon, takes this trope even further. While Midday form and Dusk form looks more like a typical wolf, there is werewolf lore where the werewolf looks much like a regular wolf. The species name is also a reference to Lycanthropy.
* ThePowerOfTheSun: Rockruff evolves into Midday Lycanroc in ''Pokémon Sun'' due to exposure to profuse solar rays, partially because of the influence of Solgaleo.
* PreciousPuppies: Rockruff is a cute puppy based on the Hawaiian Poi.
* PunnyName:
** Rockruff's Japanese name is a combination of the words "iwa" (meaning "rock") and "wanko" (a childish word for "puppy").
** Rockruff's English name has the word "Ruff". Which is not only a sound that a dog makes, but also references its collar (which is studded with rocks).
** Lycanroc's Japanese name, Lugarugan, literally means "rock werewolf", from "loup-garou" (French word for werewolf) and "gan" (rock, stone).
** Lycanroc's English name contains "Lycan", meaning wolf and used in a similar context to "Lycanthrope" (literally, "wolf man"), a term for werewolves, and "roc(k)".
* RecurringElement:
** Midnight Lycanroc is a bipedal canine that receives heavy promotion, much like Lucario and Zoroark before it.
** Rockruff's exotic form of evolution is reminiscent of Tyrogue's. For both Pokémon, the form that it'll evolve into are determined by what conditions are met when it reaches the correct level. There are three choices for both: for Rockruff, it is determined by what version of the game it is in and for Tyrogue, whether its attack or defense are higher. One of the forms is considered to be a bit more difficult to obtain then the other two (Dusk Form Lycanroc being evolved from a Rockruff with Own Tempo during sunset and Hitmontop being evolved from a Tyrogue with its attack and defense stat being equal). The biggest difference between the two is that Tyrogue can evolve into three different species of Pokémon while all of Rockruff's evolved forms are all counted as one species (Lycanroc).
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Lycanroc's Midnight form has glowing red eyes, adding to its overall menacing appearance. Lore-wise, it's explained that it loves battles so much that its eyes glow. Dusk Lycanroc's eyes glow red when it attacks or is enraged.
* RedIsViolent: Midnight Lycanroc is mostly red, and is more battle-hungry than the rest of its evolution line-up.
* RedOniBlueOni: Midday Lycanroc is noble and calm, while Midnight Lycanroc is savage and careless (for both themself and their opponents). In addition, Midday has blue eyes while Midnight has glowing red eyes.
* TheRival: According to the Pokédex, Rockruff and Growlithe are bitter rivals for territory in Alola due to their similar lifestyles and needs.
* SavageWolf: Midnight Lycanroc is a BloodKnight who prefers to fight dirty in order to win.
* SchmuckBait: Lore-wise, Lycanroc's Midnight Form tries to coax its enemies into hitting it by dodging enemy attacks and quickly pressing the rocks on its mane hard into them. Anyone that falls for this tactic will get hit with a powerful counter attack.
* SecretArt:
** Midday Lycanroc and Dusk Lycanroc are the only Pokémon that can learn Accelerock, a Rock-type move with ActionInitiative.
** For ''VideoGame/PokemonUltraSunAndUltraMoon'', Lycanroc has its own Z-Move, Splintered Stormshards, which has the additional effect of removing Terrain effects. All Lycanroc can use this as long as it has Stone Edge as a move.
* SecretCharacter: Dusk Lycanroc can only be obtained by evolving a special Rockruff with Own Tempo as its Ability, initially distributed early in ''Ultra Sun'' and ''Ultra Moon''[='=]s release. Fortunately, it can be bred to create more. ''Un''fortunately, they cannot be wonder-traded.
* ShownTheirWork:
** Infants in a certain part of Hawaii, some time ago, were given a Hawaiian Poi puppy at birth. If they died before the dog did, the dog would be killed and buried with them, or in the case of the child outliving the dog, the dog's teeth would be made into a necklace for the human to wear. This appears to correspond with Rockruff's bone necklace-like collar and its earthly typing.
** Midday Lycanroc seems like it is rather small and light for a wolf, but wolves from hot climates in the real world are indeed around its size.
** Dusk Lycanroc's green eyes are a reference to a brief and fairly rare visual phenomenon called the "green flash" that can occur during sunrises and sunsets.
* SlasherSmile: Lycanroc's Midnight form has this as its default expression.
* StormOfBlades: Lycanroc's exclusive Z-Move has it launching a multitude of pointed stones at its target.
* TemporaryOnlineContent: Previously before the Isle of Armor DLC in ''VideoGame/PokemonSwordAndShield'', the only way to own a Dusk Form Lycanroc was through evolving a special Rockruff with Own Tempo for its Ability, distributed as an event beginning at the launch of ''Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon''. Fortunately, more Own Tempo Rockruffs can be bred from it. In Isle of Armor, it's possible to find an Own Tempo Rockruff in the wild or a Dusk Lycanroc through a rare encounter in Max Raid battles. Meanwhile, in ''VideoGame/PokemonScarletAndViolet'', Own Tempo Rockruff is a fixed Tera spawn.
* ThisIsADrill: For some reason, Midday and Dusk form can be tutored Drill Run. Because they can't learn Earthquake, this is their best Ground move.
* UndyingLoyalty: Dusk Lycanroc and Midday Lycanroc will always obey the orders of its Trainer and never abandon them, especially if it was raised as a Rockruff (Rockruff go through a rebellious stage before evolving; the Lycanroc remembers this and will respect the patience its trainer showed it). Subverted with Midnight Lycanroc, which can have a deep trust for its trainer, but will have a sense of contempt if it doesn't agree with its Trainer's actions.
* VersionExclusiveContent: Depending on the version, Rockruff raised in Alola are only allowed to evolve into one variant during day or night. This is averted in Isle of Armor onward, where they can evolve into both regardless of version, now only dependent on the time of day like the anime.
* WolverineClaws: Dusk Lycanroc has Tough Claws, which increases the power of its contact moves.
* WolvesAlwaysHowlAtTheMoon: Rockruff is said to howl every time the sun sets, particularly when it is close to evolving. Midnight Lycanroc's cry sounds like a howl.

[[caption-width-right:240:School Form Wishiwashi]]

A tiny Water-type fish that resembles a sardine. Despite its seemingly weak appearance and tendency to find itself at the base of the food chain, locals fear it due to the fact that it can change forms by sending an S.O.S signal and summoning others of its kind to form a school that resembles an extremely large fish crossed with a submarine.
----
* ArmoredButFrail: School form's defenses are 130 and 135, but are brought down to pathetic 20 and 25 when its HP hits 25% or less. Bringing it down to 25% HP isn't that tough, considering both forms only have base 45 HP.
* BaitAndSwitchBoss: It reappears as the Totem Pokémon of Brooklet Hill in ''Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon''... [[spoiler:only to get pounced on and dispersed by Totem Araquanid, the real boss.]]
* BlessedWithSuck: Downplayed: unlike Archeops with Defeatist, Wishiwashi has incredible bulk. Better yet, because its ability comes into play at a quarter health instead of half, it doesn't have to worry as much.
* CoolBoat: Befitting its colony nature, Wishiwashi's School Form resembles a submarine, complete with antennae and a conning tower, and can fire some of its smaller fish like torpedoes.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: With a dopey name and appearance, bottom-of-the-barrel stats, and no evolutions, Wishiwashi seems like a weaksauce JokeCharacter at first glance. Then it hits Level 20 and gets School Form...
* DiscOneNuke: It has legendary stats in its school form, you can get it at Level 20, and you can find the TM for Scald where you can catch one, and Wishiwashi's School Form has 140 special attack. To put it simply, it annihilates any non-Electric or non-Grass type at this point in the game, and is also quite helpful in the fight against Nihilego in the Aether Foundation. Turns into InfinityMinusOneSword in the end game.
* TheDreaded: Even ''Gyarados'' flee from a school of Wishiwashi.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: Wishiwashi irises look shiny and wobbly, like they're on the verge of tears.
* FiendishFish: Wishiwashi are, individually, very small and weak fish. However, they have the ability to school together in sync to form a giant, powerful fish-like monster [[TheWormThatWalks still visibly composed of individual fishes]]. School Form Wishiwashi are very powerful, enough so to be known as the Demon of the Sea. Even Gyarados flee from these things!
* FluffyTheTerrible: "Wishiwashi" is about as un-threatening as Pokémon names get, especially for one that even Gyarados flees from.
* FusionDance: Assumes their larger form through having what looks like multiple Wishiwashi fusing together.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: Wishiwashi's School form is made from an entire school of Wishiwashi forming together. When it takes damage, you can see individual school members get knocked out of the greater amalgamation.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: In its larger form, it has many glowing eyes all over its body. By itself, it uses this as a beacon to call allies after developing enough skill to utilize Schooling. Its ''Ultra Moon'' Dex entry mentions that the light can be seen from more than 25 miles away.
* HiveMind: A school of Wishiwashi combine to form one gigantic fish that acts as a single creature.
* IAmLegion: When a school of them merge into a single larger fish, they all act as one being.
* InfinityMinusOneSword: Slightly complicated usage aside, School Forme Wishiwashi has a higher Base Stat Total than most of Alola's ''actual'' Legendary Pokémon. To put it into perspective, there is only one non-Legendary, non-Mega Evolved Pokémon that is stronger than Wishiwashi's School Form in Gen 7, and that's ''Slaking''.
* InjuredVulnerability: Its school form scatters and reverts back to its smaller form once it takes enough damage. You can revert it back to its School Form by simply healing off the damage, though.
* KingMook: A Totem Wishiwashi appears as part of the trial in Brooklet Hill in ''Sun and Moon'', although it appears in its School Form.
* LethalJokeCharacter: Wishiwashi has a weird name, silly appearance, and in general has worse stats than Sunkern. Schooled Wishiwashi is stronger than some OlympusMons.
* MagicKnight: School Forme Wishiwashi hits equally hard on the physical and special sides of the spectrum. Which is to say, it hits ''very hard''.
* MagikarpPower: Unlike other Pokémon, such as the TropeNamer, Wishiwashi demonstrates this trope via its Ability rather than evolution. Before level 20 or under 25% of its health, it has ''the lowest overall stats of all Pokémon''. But upon reaching level 20 and at high HP, it has high offensive and defensive stats that are comparable to some legendaries.
* MakingASplash: It's a pure Water-type based off sardines.
* MeaningfulName: 'Wishy-washy' is a term used to describe something as weak and ineffectual in character, which a Wishiwashi all by itself definitely is. Its Japanese name 'Yowashi' is a combination of yowai (weak) and iwashi (sardine). With that said, though, it quickly becomes an IronicName once it achieves its School Form.
* MechanicallyUnusualClass: In a unique variation, Wishiwashi's ability allows it to change into its school form after level 20, which mimics evolution without actually evolving. It reverts to its normal form when it takes a certain amount of damage.
* MightyGlacier: A school of fish is only as fast as its slowest fish, so while School Form Wishiwashi's Speed is very low, its high defenses help it take hits and its equally good offenses ensure that its attacks hit hard in return. Just to put it in perspective, its overall stat total is higher than some Legendary Pokémon.
* PerpetualFrowner: Solo form Wishiwashi is always frowning, as a testament on how weak and timid it is on its own.
* RedBaron: Known as the "Demon of the Sea", because of its intimidating School form.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: If the School form's health drops below 25%, the rest of the fish will leave and its Solo form will go back to being weak and alone.
* SeaMonster: Wishiwashi are individually very small and weak, but when they join together, they form a powerful and terrifying monster — still visibly composed of small fishes swimming in sync — [[TheDreaded that is rightfully feared]] by nearly everything in and on the ocean, up to and including ''[[TheBerserker Gyarados]]''. (Note that its base stat total ''exceeds the pseudo-legendaries''.) About the only other creatures that stand up to and actively hunt them in School Form are Wailmer and Wailord except in ''VideoGame/NewPokemonSnap'' where a Wailord ends up fleeing from a Illumina School Form Wishiwashi.
* SecretArt: Its ability, Schooling, which lets it change from its individually weak form to its powerful School Form.
* SynchronizedSwarming: Its larger form looks like an entire school of fish that have combined together to create the illusion of a huge fish.
* WhosLaughingNow: Alone, it's near the bottom of the Alolan food chain. As a school, even '''Gyarados''' fear it and only Wailord hunt it — and in ''VideoGame/NewPokemonSnap'', an Ilumina School Form Wishiwashi is able to force even Wailord to flee.
* TheWormThatWalks: Wishiwashi's School Form is a giant, monstrous fish formed by a school of smaller fish seemingly bound together.

These Poison/Water Pokémon are based on the crown-of-thorns starfish, and appropriately enough, feed on Corsola's branches. Like their real-life counterparts, they're spiny and toxic — Toxapex's toxin will leave one sickened for days on end with aftereffects — and more importantly, absolutely merciless when their diet of Corsola is involved. Fittingly, they can have the signature ability Merciless, which allows them to score critical hits on poisoned Pokémon.
----
* AnimalJingoism: Its ''Violet'' dex entry states that it gets into violent kerfuffles with Bruxish over territory. It also notes that it's disadvantaged in this regard, presumably due to the part-Psychic-type Bruxish having a type advantage.
* ArmoredButFrail: Despite their high defenses, Toxapex have only 50 base HP, opening them up to {{Fixed Damage Attack}}s. This can really hurt its longevity if it doesn't have Regenerator. Strangely, Mareanie isn't this trope; its HP starts out decent for an unevolved Pokémon, but doesn't improve at all when it evolves.
* CavalryBetrayal: The only way to encounter a wild Mareanie in Gen VII is to have a Corsola call for help. Should one appear, it will proceed to mercilessly attack the Corsola.
* CriticalHitClass: With Merciless, it ''will'' score {{Critical Hit}}s on poisoned Pokémon, so long as the opponent doesn't have Battle/Shell Armor or has used Lucky Chant.
* CuteLittleFangs: Mareanie has a pair of tiny fangs that add to its cuteness (which is much needed, when its defining traits are having poisonous spikes and brutally devouring the even cuter Corsola).
* DamageOverTime: Toxapex being a Poison-type naturally makes most of its attacks deal poison [=DoT=].
* DefendCommand: Toxapex has Baneful Bunker, which protects it from attacks as well as poisoning foes who make direct contact with it.
* {{Foil}}: To Staryu and Starmie — both lines are Water-type starfish that learn Recover, but while the Staryu line are rather docile and are fast offensive attackers, both Mareanie and Toxapex are rather aggressive predators and ironically are slow but ''very'' defensive Pokémon. Also reflected in their typing: Starmie gains Psychic as a secondary type, and both Mareanie and Toxapex instead have Poison, which the Psychic type is super-effective against.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: If a wild Corsola calls for help and a Mareanie appears as "aid", the Mareanie will attack the Corsola instead since Corsola is its diet.
* HealingFactor: Has Regenerator as a Hidden Ability, and can also learn Recover naturally. It can also be bred with Stockpile and Swallow.
* AnIcePerson: Mareanie and Toxapex learn a few Ice moves through TM. Notably, they can learn Frost Breath, which normally only Ice-type Pokémon can learn.
* JabbaTableManners: Toxapex's ''Sun'' entry explicitly states that it leaves a trail of Corsola pieces wherever it goes. {{Justified|Trope}} in that it's a wild animal and that it lives in the ocean, so debris from food is inevitable.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: Their Merciless ability causes them to score guaranteed {{Critical Hit}}s on poisoned Pokémon.
* MagikarpPower: Surprisingly, from the defensive side of things: Mareanie doesn't have nearly as much tanking power as Toxapex, but once it evolves, it will receive a ''huge'' boost in both its Defense and Special Defense stats. (Mareanie's Defense and Special Defense are a mere 62 and 52, respectively; Toxapex has '''152''' Defense and ''142'' Special Defense.)
* MakingASplash: They're part water-types based off the crown-of-thorns starfish.
* MeaningfulName:
** Mareanie: a marine dwelling critter that's rather mean, although that really isn't enough to describe what they do to their prey. Oh, and Toxapex, as in ''toxic'' and ''apex predator''.
** Hidoide and Dohidoide combine sea star (''hitode'') with "cruel" and "very cruel", just to make sure you know these aren't very nice Pokémon.
* MetalSlime: Mareanie in Gen VII can only be encountered if a wild Corsola, which only has a 1% chance of showing up by fishing (20% if fished in special spots), calls for help.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Both of their classifications name them as the 'Brutal Star Pokémon'.
* PoisonousPerson: They're Part Poison-types with the Merciless ability that involves always giving critical hits on poisoned Pokémon.
* PredatorsAreMean: It’s even reflected in Mareanie’s name.
* PunnyName:
** Mareanie's name is Marine + Meanie.
** Toxapex's name is Toxic + Apex.
* PrehensileHair: Both Mareanie's and Toxapex's "hair" are actually their tentacle arms, and can move them in combat.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Mareanie, but only vaguely, ''really'' vaguely. This phase is ditched by the time it evolves into Toxapex.
* SecretArt:
** Baneful Bunker, a Protect-style move which also poisons foes who make direct contact with the user while it's up, is learned normally only by Toxapex.
** Both Mareanie and Toxapex are the only Pokémon with the ability Merciless, which guarantees critical hits on poisoned targets.
* ShownTheirWork:
** Their favorite food is the coral Pokémon Corsola (or at least the coral growing on Corsola's back, which they can shed to escape further harm). The real life crown-of-thorns starfish has a huge appetite for coral to the point of being able to decimate coral reefs and being an ecological nuisance.
** Toxapex’s venom is described as lasting for three days, with lasting aftereffects afterward, much like a real crown-of-thorns starfish’s venom.
* SpikesOfDoom: While neither of them have Poison Point, Toxapex does have the move Baneful Bunker, which protects itself and poisons those who make contact with it — presumably via venomous spines. They are also one of the few users of Spike Cannon and can set up Toxic Spikes.
* StoneWall: Toxapex has abysmal Speed and weak attack stats, but '''extremely''' high defenses, a Protect variation that also poisons, ''and'' it comes with both Regenerator ''and'' Recover to heal away damage. A Merciless Toxapex can be a bit deadlier offensively, thanks to guaranteed critical hits on poisoned targets, aided by how it can also learn Venoshock.
* TrademarkFavouriteFood: Corsola. Just like the real-life crown-of-thorns starfish, which has a voracious appetite for coral. Marenie's ''Moon'' Pokédex entry states that Corsola branches are a feast to them. ''Shield'' Pokédex entry mentions that this only applies to those living in Alola, as those living in Galar haven't figured out that Corsola's branches are delicious. In Paldea, they favor Pincurchin needles, but this frequently comes at the risk of self-electrocution.
* UselessUsefulSpell: Merciless allowing a Pokémon to inflict guaranteed critical hits on a poisoned foe sounds like a great ability, but it's very underwhelming on Toxapex, since [[StoneWall its offensive stats are so low]] that even the power boost from Merciless isn't very impressive.

[[caption-width-right:240:Mudsdale]]

Equine Ground-Types, Mudbray is a donkey that evolves into Mudsdale, a massive Clydesdale horse with dreadlocks. Mudbray used to be found all over the world, but excessive over-hunting brought them to the verge of extinction. Alola, Galar, and Paldea are the only places left where they can be caught in the wild. As it evolves, Mudsdale has a thick coating of mud cover its hooves, making it extremely heavy. These hooves also allow it to traverse rocky terrain, so people use it as a Poké-ride. It can either have Own Tempo or Stamina, which increases Defense whenever it is attacked.
----
* BossBattle: Serves as Kahuna Hapu's ace.
* CoolHorse: Mudsdale is a strong and powerful horse Pokémon with earth elemental powers and dreadlocks.
* DiligentDraftAnimal: Mudsdale is the "Draft Horse Pokémon" that made its first appearance in ''Pokémon Sun and Moon''. While it was obviously based on cart horses, the Pokédex entries in ''Pokémon Shield'' show that this Pokémon has been used for manual labor.
--> "Mudsdale has so much stamina that it could carry over 10 tons across the Galar region without rest or sleep."
* DishingOutDirt: Both Mudbray and Mudsdale are Ground-type.
* DreadlockWarrior: Mudsdale's mane is arranged into dreadlocks.
* EatDirtCheap: Mudbray loves playing in and eating mud, and gets stressed if it's not allowed to do so.
* EndangeredSpecies: Mudbray used to be common all over the world, but wild ones now only survive in Alola, Galar, and Paldea.
* GentleGiant: How big is Mudsdale? It's 8'02'' tall and weighs '''2028.3 lbs.''' However, it is an extremely placid Pokémon.
* MagicallyIneptFighter: Mudsdale's high base 125 Attack is contrasted with its low base 55 Special Attack.
* MightyGlacier: Mudsdale is very slow, but quite durable and very powerful physically, and its ability Stamina raises its Defense stat when it is hit by an attack.
* MeaningfulName: In both Japanese and English, their names are rather apt descriptors. Mudbray is a muddy donkey, Dorobanko is a muddy (''doro'') donkey (''roba'') that is also a baby (''ko'') draft horse (''banba''), Mudsdale is a muddy Clydsdale, and Banbadoro is a muddy (''doro'') draft horse (''banba'').
* NobodyTouchesTheHair: Mudsdale doesn't like its mane being touched in Refresh.
* PowerUpMount: Mudsdale is large enough to ride. It's required to use one when traversing rocky terrain.
* RealityIsUnrealistic: Mudsdale's height and weight measures put it into this territory due to Pokémon standards. They are similar to a real Clydesdale horse, but in Pokémon that puts it into similar territory to heavyweights and Legendary Pokémon, not to other horse Pokémon.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Mudbray is an adorably small ([[PintSizedPowerhouse yet strong for its size]]) donkey Pokémon.
* SecretArt: Both Mudbray and Mudsdale are the only Pokémon with the Stamina ability, which increases their defense whenever they are damaged.
* ShownTheirWork:
** Mudbray is one of the few Pokémon with horizontal pupils, as such ungulates like the donkeys and horses it's based on have. The fact that it's on the verge of extinction is a reference to how domestic horses and donkeys are very common and how wild ones are extremely rare to practically extinct.
** Mudsdale may seem unusually tall and massive by Pokémon standards (it's the fifth-heaviest Pokémon of all, next to Mega Metagross, both forms of Groudon, Cosmoem, and Celesteela), but it's roughly the height and weight of a real Clydesdale horse, unlike how most Pokémon are either smaller or larger than their real-life inspirations. Its MightyGlacier stats also reflect the purpose of real Clydesdales: they are intended to pull heavy loads, not run fast.
* StatusBuff: If attacked and possessing the Stamina Ability, both Mudbray and Mudsdale see their Defense increase.
* StubbornMule: Mudbray's Pokédex entries describe it as stubborn.
* TheStoic: Mudsdale isn't an overly emotional Pokémon.
* SuperStrength: Mudbray can carry 50 times its own weight, while Mudsdale can carry about 10 tons across Galar without rest or sleep.
* TurnsRed: Unless you knock it out in a single attack or repeated special attacks, Stamina will constantly continue to boost its Defense every time it's hit, actually making it tankier the more you attack it.

[[quoteright:240:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/araquanid752.png]]
[[caption-width-right:240:Araquanid]]

Dewpider and Araquanid are blue and black Water/Bug spider Pokémon which resemble diving bell spiders. In a similar case to the Fomantis line's inversion, however, instead of being a somewhat terrestrial spider species that build air reserves underwater, they instead are a completely aquatic species which wear bubbles filled with water to protect their vulnerable heads and let them survive on land. Its signature ability is Water Bubble, which makes it so that it gains a resistance to Fire-type moves, cannot receive the Burn status effect, and doubles the power of their Water-type moves.
----
* ArmoredButFrail: Araquanid's defenses are good, especially on the special side, but it has low HP.
* BigCreepyCrawlies: They're both Bug-types. Araquanid stands at a whopping 5'11", and that's the non-totem variant.
* BubbleShield: The line's ability, Water Bubble, cuts fire damage dealt to them in half and prevents them from being burned.
* DiscOneNuke: Dewpider can be caught just before the second trial and evolves shortly thereafter, and Brooklet Hill just so happens to have the TM for Scald in the area, allowing Araquanid to hit like a truck. However, like most Bug-types, Araquanid can fall off later in the game in comparison to other Pokémon.
* FaceOfAThug: Even though Araquanid is a terrifyingly huge spider with a rather nasty appearance, the ''Moon'' Dex entry says it's quite empathetic and is also protective of weak Pokémon.
* FourLeggedInsect: Like Ariados and Galvantula before it, they're arachnids with less than eight legs. Downplayed that they have six of them total.
* GiantSpider: Dewpider is 1'00" and 8.8 lbs, which is already bigger than any known species of spider to date, a feat that was previously achieved by both the Spinarak and Joltik lines. Araquanid? '''5'11"''' and '''180.8 lbs''', bigger than even ''Ariados'' and ''Galvantula!'' The Totem Araquanid is bigger still.
* GuideDangIt: Water Bubble's in-game description tells you it can't be burned and that it resists Fire-type moves, which is decent but not amazing. The in-game description completely leaves out the far more important half of the ability: the fact that it doubles the power of Water-type attacks.
* KingMook: A Totem Araquanid appears at the trial of Brooklet Hill in ''VideoGame/PokemonUltraSunAndUltraMoon'', replacing Wishiwashi.
* MakingASplash: Part Water-type. It's also one of the few Water-types that actually incorporate elemental water in its design.
* MightyGlacier: With Water Bubble and Water-type moves, they can bypass their low offensive stats and hit much harder than one will expect from it, and have the defensive stats to match. They're also pretty slow.
* MobileFishbowl: The water bubbles around their head serve as a way for them to survive on land.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Assuming both Pokédex entries from ''Sun'' and ''Moon'' refer to the same Pokémon brought into its bubble, Araquanid is guilty of this, to a tragic degree. The reasonable assessment would be that in trying to protect small Pokémon with its bubble, it sucks them in by accident and drowns them.
* PunnyName:
** Dewpider is named after the dewdrop spider, only in this case literally collecting and using dew (and all other forms of water), while Araquanid is an aquatic arachnid.
** Shizukumo not only means "water drop spider", it also references the diving bell spider, informally called the "water spider" due to its aquatic nature, but taken much more literally here. Onishizukumo adds on the orb-weaving spider (''onigumo'') and {{Oni}}, in reference to its FaceOfAThug and creation of water orbs.
* RecurringElement: Dewpider and Araquanid are extremely similar to Surskit and Masquerain as they are both aquatic bugs and start off as Water and Bug types. In the Gen VII games, they are even found in the same areas but at different times (Dewpider and Araquanid during the day while Surskit and Masquerain are found at night). They even have the same base stat totals.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Dewpider; not on the same level as Joltik, but close.
* SecretArt: The line is the only Pokémon that possess Water Bubble. They can, however, learn Entrainment to give other Pokémon this Ability temporarily.
* SirNotAppearingInThisTrailer: One of the few Gen VII non-legendary families kept secret before the game's release.
** On top of this, Totem Araquanid was the only ''Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon'' Totem Pokémon not revealed before the game's launch, with the rest having been revealed by screenshots and trailers, or just being carried over from the previous games.
* StoneWall: Its Special Defense stat is pretty high as well as having good Defense stat, but is rather slow and its offensive stats are quite poor. It technically becomes a MightyGlacier with Water Bubble, but only when it's using Water-type attacks. Furthermore, its hidden ability is Water Absorb, restoring its HP when it gets hit by a Water-type move.
%%* TheRival: To Surskit, according to its own Pokédex entries.

Grass-types that resemble orchid mantis but, oddly enough, are not Bug-types. They are instead plants that mimic bugs, basically inverting the primary feature of the animal they are based off of. These Pokémon spend the daytime asleep while performing photosynthesis, but are active at night where they capture prey. They are able to learn a new move called Solar Blade, which functions like Solar Beam, but is a Physical move instead of a Special one.
----
* BerserkButton: Fomantis spend all day sleeping in the sun to build up energy for their nocturnal activities, and in order to evolve, but will awaken and fiercely attack anything that gets in the way of this process.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Being based on the orchid mantis, Lurantis possesses raptorial limbs and [[AbsurdlySharpClaws uses them to slice opponents in combat]].
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: Fomantis is a "faux mantis," i.e. a "fake mantis."
* TheFightingNarcissist: Is well aware that it is regarded as the most gorgeous Grass-type and has trouble getting along with a trainer that doesn't groom it properly.
* {{Foil}}: To Lilligant. Both are pure Grass-types known for their beauty and require a sun of some sort to evolve (leveling up during the day for Lurantis, Sun Stone for Lilligant). However, Lurantis is a slow Physical attacker that specializes in slash-based moves and whose signature move needs set-up to be effective, while Lilligant is a faster Special attacker that specializes in dances and can be locked in and confused by its own signature move.
* GenuineImposter: Fomantis and Lurantis are based on an orchid mantis, a kind of insect that disguises itself as an orchid to catch unsuspecting insects that are trying to pollinate the flower. However, they take this a step further as they actually are plants, so in the end they're flowers pretending to be insects pretending to be flowers.
* GlacierWaif: Lurantis resembles an orchid mantis and looks quite frail. You'd be forgiven for thinking it was a lot faster than it actually is.
* GreenThumb: Their appearance suggests that they're also part bug, but no. Pure Grass.
* KingMook: A Totem Lurantis appears as part of the trial in Lush Jungle in ''Sun and Moon''.
* ManEatingPlant: They are carnivorous plants, photosynthesizing during the day and hunting prey at night.
* MightyGlacier: It has good attack and defenses, but terrible speed.
* PowerOfTheSun: In addition to their SecretArt Solar Blade, they can also learn Sunny Day by level up.
* PunnyName:
** In addition to the Fomantis pun in English, ''kari'' having two different potential kanji means Karikiri can be read as either the equally literal "pseudo-mantis" or play off their Grass-type by reading it as "''pruning'' mantis".
** Lurantis is an alluring ''fleur'' that's lures in others with its fake mantis appearance. Lalantes meanwhile puns on being a very literal "orchid (''ran'' 蘭) mantis".
* SignatureMove: Solar Blade, an even more powerful, Physical Solar Beam. It was Lurantis's SecretArt in Generation VII, but in ''Sword and Shield'', the move is [=TM12=] and is able to be learned by other Pokémon.
* SlayingMantis: They're based on orchid mantids, but invert things by being Grass-types pretending to be Bug-types. Fomantis' names in both English and Japanese suggest that they indeed are not real mantids.
* SpellBlade: The attack animation for Solar Blade, the Physical counterpart to Solar Beam, has them wreath one of their raptorial limbs in a massive aura of solar energy, then [[SwordBeam bring it crashing down on their opponent]] with enough force to cleave through solid rock.

A little Grass/Fairy Mushroom Pokémon that glows in the dark. They move about on thin roots at night to avoid draining all the nutrients out of the soil and killing plants. They evolve into the far more sinister yet unnervingly cute Shiinotic, which make people get lost at night in the forest and now feed on the strength of Pokémon they put to sleep.
----
* BioluminescenceIsCool: It can glow in the dark. It even has Illuminate as an ability.
* BlackEyesOfEvil: Both members of this line have blank black eyes, and they are some of the most unnerving Fairy-types to date, leaning heavily into TheFairFolk tropes.
* CreepyLongFingers: Shiinotic has roots that represent these.
* TheFairFolk: Shiinotic is by far one of the most malevolent Fairy-type Pokémon in the series, using its lights to cause people to get lost in the woods, or to make its victims sleep so it can feed on them by draining their energy.
* GlowingFlora: They're mushrooms, of course, but they're Grass-types all the same. Both Morelull and Shiinotic glow in dark forests and emit flickering luminescent spores. Shiinotic, being one of the most malevolent Fairy types, uses these to confuse humans and Pokémon alike so they get lost forever in the forest, where they then hypnotize them and feed on their Life Energy.
* GreenThumb: As with other Pokémon that are based on mushrooms, it's considered a Grass-type.
* LevelDrain: Their SecretArt Strength Sap invokes a strength-level drain (ala ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'') where it drains a temporary level of the opponent's Attack and converts it to health.
* LightIsNotGood: Despite being fairly cutesy illuminating mushrooms, they're not nice. Morelull suck the life energy of trees, and Shiinotic confuse trespassers by luring them into the woods so they never find their way out.
* LuringInPrey: Morelull and Shiinotic release clouds of glowing spores with which to lure in other creatures and send them into a deep sleep, after which the fungus drains their life energy. They can also have the "Illuminate" ability, which increases the rate of random encounters to represent wild Pokémon being drawn to their light.
* MagicMushroom: By virtue of being a Fairy-typed mushroom at least. It glows in the dark, but no telling what happens if you eat this mushroom. Staring at its lights induces sleepiness.
* MeaningfulName: Morel (a type of mushroom) + Lull. It's, appropriately enough, a morel mushroom that can induce sleepiness. Shiinotic is a combination of "shiitake", "shine", and "hypnotic".
* MightyGlacier: Shiinotic has decent Special Attack as well as good bulk. But just like most Pokémon based on mushrooms, they are awfully slow.
* MushroomMan: Well, more like mushroom mon. Shiinotic plays this trope straight by having a more distinctive humanoid appearance than Morelull.
* NocturnalMooks: They can only be found at night.
* OurFairiesAreDifferent: It's a glowing mushroom, and most likely based on the myths surrounding fairy rings.
* PunnyName: Their Japanese names combine "mushroom" in GratuitousEnglish with either ''ne'' (sleep) or "shade", them being mushrooms that put you to sleep under their shade, but [[LightIsNotGood not for good reasons]].
* RecurringElement: A Grass-type mushroom-based Pokémon being able to learn Spore introduced in an odd-numbered generation, similar to Paras/Parasect, Shroomish/Breloom, and Foongus/Amoonguss before it. In particular, they parallel Paras and Parasect by replacing them at night wherever Paras and Parasect are found in the wild and also have the same Base Stat total of 405.
* TheRival: Are known to have a rivalry with Parasect in the wild, leaving the areas of their bouts covered in spores.
* SecretArt: As one of the few lines based on mushrooms, they can learn Spore. They are also the only Pokémon to learn Strength Sap by level up (and in fact were the only ones to learn it at all in ''Sun and Moon''), which a move that heals the user for as much as the target's Attack stat, and reduces it by 1 level.
* ShownTheirWork: Their ability to suck the nutrients from the soil and cause surrounding plants to wither is based on real-life fairy rings, rings of mushrooms which produce necrotic zone rings of dead grass due to the fungi draining the nutrients. The mushrooms being able to glow in the dark is also a reference to mushrooms in the ''Mycena'' family, where several species are capable of producing bioluminescent light.
* StealthPun: They're Fairy-types based on mushrooms, who subsist by draining nutrients from the environment around them. That is to say, they're living [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy_ring fairy rings]].
* TookALevelInJerkass: Morelull might drain nutrients from the soil, but it actually tries to avoid doing so, showing that it's at least a decent folk. Shiinotic, meanwhile, loses any sense of decency and goes from taking nutrients from plant life to actually draining the energy of other creatures. Downplayed in that trained Shiinotic shy away from being petted on their life-draining hands in Pokémon Refresh.

A Poison/Fire-type lizard Pokémon, its poison smells sweet but is so acidic that it bypasses all immunities, thanks to its ability "Corrosion." The female Salandit are special in that through said poison, they can emit special pheromones that can attract males (and not just Pokémon, but humans too!) and make them bend to their will. This is reflected on Salazzle — only female Salandit can evolve into one; male Salandit are incapable of evolving due to malnourishment.
----
* BossBattle: The ace of Team Skull's Plumeria. It later gains the ability to do Z-Moves in her Title Defense matches.
* BewareMyStingerTail: The poison, flames, and fumes come from their tails. However, from what part of the tail differs on the evolution. For Salandit, they come from the dorsal side. For Salazzle, they come from the ventral side.
* CoolMask: The two flaps of skin on Salandit's neck give it the appearance of wearing a full face mask.
* {{Dominatrix}}: Salazzle looks like a curvaceous woman with HartmanHips, always sports a sly and seductive grin on her face, and [[SensualSpandex her skin resembles a tight black bodysuit]]. She lives with a group of males that she binds to her will, punishing them when they displease her. Salazzle is one of the very few Pokémon to know Fire Lash, [[UselessUsefulSpell despite her stats not being suited for using it at all]], while she probably just uses her tail to execute it, [[WhipOfDominance absolutely no one has any doubts as to why she has such a move]].
* EvilLaugh: Salandit's cry is a sinister laugh.
* ExactWords: Corrosion says it allows the line to ''poison'' Steel and Poison-types. Steel-types are still immune to Poison-type ''attacks''.
* FanDisservice: Salazzle is an intentionally sexualized Pokémon that plays up the sexualization to be disturbing rather than titillating.
* FemmeFatale: Female Salandit can make males, Pokémon and humans alike, bend to her will. Salazzle are often seen with a reverse harem of male Salandit. She even punishes Salandit who fail to bring her food by slapping them with a flaming palm. Her hidden ability, Oblivious, prevents her from being infatuated, taunted, or intimidated, reinforcing this impression.
* FierySalamander: Salandit is a Fire-type lizard-like Pokémon with a pattern on its tail that resembles lava, in addition to its name referencing this trope.
* FragileSpeedster: Salazzle's Speed stat is high, but its defenses are poor.
* FurryReminder: Despite her idle pose having her stand on two legs, Salazzle walks on all fours, like Salandit.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: According to its ''Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon'' entries, the reason only female Salandit can evolve is because the males give all their food to their Salazzle superior, making them unable to evolve due to malnourishment. Even if the player keeps a male Salandit well-fed (through either Pokémon Refresh or by giving it berries), it will still be unable to evolve.
* GlassCannon: Salazzle hits hard and moves fast, but its defenses are lacking. This affects the way it makes use of its Corrosion ability, which would arguably be more fitting on a StoneWall: instead of targeting a specific Steel or Poison-type and stalling out a full health bar through poison damage, it uses the combined threat of Toxic and its high special attack to create a vicious guessing game for the opponent - either they withstand its monstrous attacks, or they switch into a Toxic that will cripple even their Steel-type wall for the rest of the battle - and the only way out is to KO it first.
* HartmanHips: Salazzle dons it. Somewhat justified in that reptiles tend to have thick thighs.
* HoistByTheirOwnPetard: Their Corrosion ability makes them vulnerable to be [[SuperpowerDisability poisoned by a Toxic Orb]], which otherwise will not affect Poison types without the ability.
* HumanoidFemaleAnimal: Only female Salandit can evolve into Salazzle, with this trope in full force on her design.
* KingMook: A Totem Salazzle appears as part of the trial in Wela Volcano Park in ''Sun and Moon''.
* KnockoutGas: Salandit emits sweet-smelling but poisonous gases from the base of its tail, and anyone who breathes them in becomes extremely dizzy.
* LizardFolk: Salazzle is a bipedal salamander-lizard creature.
* LovableSexManiac: Salazzle as a species appears to be a G-rated female variant. Justified given the fact that she uses sex appeal to manipulate other Pokémon.
* MagikarpPower: Salandit is underwhelming, but Salazzle is fast and has great special attack. However, only female Salandit evolve into Salazzle, and the gender ratio of the former is 1 in 8.
* MasculineLinesFeminineCurves: Salazzle is very curvy.
* MasterPoisoner: The line is called the Toxic Lizard Pokémon, and their entries all refer to them being able to produce poisons that do different things. Even the fumes that emanate from their body have different effects. They even have an ability that lets them poison things that are normally immune to being poisoned.
* MinMaxing: Salazzle has good Special Attack and Speed, and naturally learns Nasty Plot, making it suited as a special sweeper. All of its other stats are terrible. This also applies to Salandit, only due to its much lower stat total its Special Attack and Speed are just somewhat decent and everything else is even more terrible.
* MoreDeadlyThanTheMale: Female Salandit are the only ones capable of evolving, and Salazzle is noticeably stronger than its preevolved form.
* MundaneUtility: People use a diluted form of Salazzle's poisonous gas to create perfumes.
* NonMammalianMammaries: Salazzle are rather curvy. They sport visible round chests and their underbellies even look like lingerie.
* NotCompletelyUseless: Although male Salandit are incapable of evolving, like male Combee, they are still capable of using the Eviolite.
* ObliviousToLove: Their hidden ability is [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Oblivious]], which makes them unable to be taunted or fall in love with the target.
* OneGenderRace: Much like Vespiquen before her, Salazzle are only female. This is because male Salandit give Salazzle most of their food, resulting in malnourishment that prevents them from evolving.
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: They're not Dragon-types, but they pick up a few Dragon moves and are in the Dragon egg group. This might be supported by Salazzle having several similarities with the mo'o, a dragon-like lizard from Hawaiian myth, sharing its association with fire, its dark scales, being female, and using seductive powers over males.
* {{Pheromones}}: Female Salandit can emit pheromones that can bend males of any species to their will, including humans.
* PinkIsFeminine: The female-exclusive Salazzle gains pink highlights on its underbelly upon evolution.
* PlayingWithFire: Part Fire-type lizards.
* PoisonIsCorrosive: Its ability to poison Steel and other Poison-types, normally immune, is specifically called Corrosion, and its poison is actually called "acidic".
* PoisonousPerson: The line is part Poison-type.
* PunnyName:
** In English on "salamander" and "bandit", and later "salamander", "dazzle", and "sizzle". Could also refer to "salacious" if one takes the context of female Salandit and Salazzle.
** In Japanese on "burglar" (''yatō'') and "newt" (''imori''), then using "newt" in GratuitousEnglish combined with "flame" (炎 ''en''). Just like in English, an extra pun can be made with the alternate "''en'' 艶", meaning "bewitching'', in reference to what females of the line do.
* ReallyGetsAround:
** The implication of Salazzle having a "reverse" harem of male Salandit has this, especially when you consider the zoological meaning of "harem".
** To drive the point further, Salazzle's Pokédex entry in ''Shield'' mentions that, when two Salazzle compete with each other, the one that wins is the one with the most male Salandit around them.
* SecretArt: Prior to ''Scarlet and Violet'', they were the only Pokémon with the Ability Corrosion, which allows them to poison anything, even Steel and other Poison-types that would normally be immune to it.
* ScissorsCutsRock: The line's signature ability manages to bypass Poison and Steel's immunity to the poison status effect.
* SirNotAppearingInThisTrailer: While Salandit was revealed early in ''Sun & Moon''[='=]s promotion, Salazzle wasn't revealed at all. This also gives her the distinction of being the only Totem Pokémon not revealed before launch.
* SmugSmiler: Salandit's official art depicts it with an almost {{Troll}}-ish like grin on its face.
* UniversalPoison: Even more so than is normal for Pokémon, as it can poison even Steel- and Poison-types, which are normally immune to poisoning.
* UselessUsefulSpell:
** Its Hidden Ability, Oblivious. It keeps the Pokémon from being infatuated, falling for taunts, or being affected by Intimidate. Infatuation is a crippling debuff, but can only be caused by one single move which is rarely used as a result of being a SituationalSword (it only works on opponents of the opposite gender). Taunt prevents the target from using status moves, but Salazzle's stats are more suited to all-out attacking: the few status moves it would run are Toxic (in which case it would prefer to have its other ability, Corrosion, to maximize its value against Poison and Steel-types) and Nasty Plot ([[NotCompletelyUseless which it admittedly does appreciate not being locked out of]]). Intimidate drops the target's Attack, which is completely irrelevant as Salazzle's physical attack is underwhelming in the first place.
** Its main ability Corrosion is '''also''' not great on it. It would have been fantastic on a defensive GradualGrinder, which Salazzle absolutely '''isn't''', typically instead capitalizing on its impressive Speed and Special Attack, as well as access to Nasty Plot, to sweep. At the very least it can use Toxic to frustrate Poison-type walls that try to switch into it (Steel-types usually won't do this '''anyway''' because of its access to Fire STAB), but that's a fairly niche strategy and it's often better to just run more coverage moves.
** In Generation IX, it is [[SecretArt the only Pokémon to know Fire Lash]], but can't use it properly [[SquishyWizard due to its extremely underwhelming Attack]].
* VolcanicVeins: Salandit sports one on its back, particularly near the tail. Salazzle somehow switches the location to the tail's ventral side. Also, parts of her underbelly (like her chest) also has the veins.
* WeakButSkilled: Salandit is described as not overly powerful, but cunning enough to throw its opponents off balance. Averted with its evolution.

[[caption-width-right:240:Bewear]]

A line of Normal/Fighting type bear-like Pokémon. Stufful is a very popular Pokémon for its cuteness, but they hate being handled. Its evolution Bewear is a likewise cute Pokémon, with a design and personality based on Japanese mascots, but it has the strength of a real bear. Because of its sheer strength, it's feared all across Alola to the point where there are warning signs about it. It can have the abilities Klutz and a new ability "Fluffy", which boosts its defense against contact-making moves at the cost of gaining a weakness to Fire-type attacks.
----
* AccidentalMurder: Bewear's ''Moon'' entry outright states that their trainers "left the world" when their bear hugs ''snap their spines''.
* AndCallHimGeorge: Bewear's hugs cause life-threatening injuries, or even death.
-->This Pokémon has the habit of hugging its companions. Many Trainers have left this world after their spines were squashed by its hug.
* AnimateInanimateObject: Both members partially qualify. Stufful resembles a plush toy while Bewear resembles a costume mascot. It's unknown whether this means they're LivingToys or whether they're actual animals that highly resemble them. [[{{Irony}} Ironically]], Bewear was revealed at the same time as Mimikyu, a Pokémon that actually ''is'' a creature wearing a mascot-like costume.
* BadassAdorable: This cute bear Pokémon can apparently split anything in two.
* BareFistedMonk: A part Fighting-type bear. Apparently they learn martial arts by observing Black Belts train.
* BearHug: It gives these out, but unfortunately it's so strong that its bear hugs hurt and can even break things in two! Its hugs have been known to even kill some Trainers by snapping their spines. [[GameplayAndStoryIntegration This is assumedly how they can use the move Bind.]]
* BearsAreBadNews: While it most likely has good intentions, owning one apparently endangers your life due to its immense power. That said, it is noted that a trainer can teach their Bewear to control its strength (and indeed it is recommended they make this a priority).
* BearyFriendly: A friendly bear/red panda hybrid who loves to give hugs but unfortunately doesn't know its own strength.
* BlessedWithSuck:
** Stufful is considered so cute that many people want to cuddle it. Unfortunately, they don't like this kind of treatment.
** Bewear is so strong, it is said to be able to break anything in two. However, this strength can prove to be a downside, as it has become TheDreaded in Alola and whenever it tries to hug its trainer, it hurts them.
** A straighter example is the possibility of them having the ability Klutz or Fluffy, which both have negative side effects (the former ''much'' more so).
* BossBattle: Bewear is Lusamine's strongest Pokémon in ''Sun and Moon'' and their ''Ultra'' versions.
* CuddleBug: Bewear is as open to giving out hugs as the costumed mascots it's based on. [[AndCallHimGeorge Unfortunately]], in place of soft foam are very strong muscles that can snap trees with ease.
* CuteBruiser: How else can one describe a line known for their massive strength that actually makes them incredibly dangerous despite being adorable [[LivingToys living stuffed animals]]?
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: These Pokémon like to hug their trainers, but often hurt or even kill them in the process due to their sheer strength. They can be trained to restrain themselves, but wild ones are still a threat.
* TheDreaded: Despite Bewear's cute looks, it's apparently so strong, it can break anything in half. Due to this, it's said that owning one is a huge risk, and it's feared all throughout Alola with warning signs commonplace around its habitats.
* DumbMuscle: It can have Klutz as an ability, which fits with its reputation.
* {{Foil}}: Surprisingly enough, to Munchlax and Snorlax — both lines vaguely resemble bears and[=/=]or bear-related paraphernalia (i.e: teddy bears, mascot costumes), are [[MightyGlacier Mighty Glaciers]] that hit hard from the physical side, and their stat distributions being remarkably similar when Fluffy is taken into account (with Snorlax tanking hits from special moves, and Bewear physical). Likewise, they're both infamous in their own native regions; Munchlax and Snorlax for being total gluttons and being absolutely lazy to the point of [[BrokenBridge blocking paths]], and Stufful and Bewear for their somewhat feisty nature or being absolutely dangerous to handle due to their lack of awareness and control of their own strength, respectively.
* FourLegsGoodTwoLegsBetter: Stufful shifts from a quadrupedal to a bipedal stance upon evolving into Bewear.
* HatesBeingTouched:
** Stufful detest being touched, unlike Bewear. Its status as the "Flailing Pokémon" comes from how it flails its arms in protest when people hug it.
** How much it dislikes being touched is inconsistent. ''Moon'' says only friends can touch it, while ''Ultra Moon'' says it can't be touched in any way, and Refresh puts no limits on touching it.
* KillerRabbit: Despite having an adorable design and a sweet personality, Bewear are terrifyingly strong, like real bears.
* KillerTeddyBear: Bewear is an accidental version — it's a huge and fuzzy teddy bear-like Pokémon that likes to give out [[AndCallHimGeorge unknowingly deadly hugs]] to its trainer, to the point where there are warning signs put up about it.
* KryptoniteProofSuit: Stufful and Bewear's Fluffy ability allows it to only take half damage from any contact moves. This effectively neutralizes the line's weakness to Fighting types, since almost all Fighting moves are contact moves, but it does come at the price of making them weak to Fire types.
* LivingToys: Stufful invokes this in its design, though its "tag" is noted to be a scent organ that just looks like a tag. Its toy-like look gets played up in Olivia's home, which features a real Stufful and several mechanical toy ones, the only visible difference being the real Stufful moves and vocalizes when you interact with it.
* MagicallyIneptFighter: Bewear has a good base 125 Attack but a poor base 55 Special Attack.
* MeaningfulName: Its English name is a pun on "beware" and bear, appropriately for a dangerous bear Pokémon, and also "wear" due to its costume mascot appearance. Its Japanese name basically contracts the phrase "wearing [a] bear costume" into a single word.
* MightyGlacier: Bewear has a great Attack stat and an okay defense stat combined with its high HP that let it withstand some physical hits, but its speed and special stats are terrible. Should it have the ability Fluffy, it becomes much more efficient in terms of Defense, as it halves the damage done by all moves that make contact (which includes the vast majority of Fighting-type moves, practically removing that weakness).
* MixAndMatchCritters: In addition to resembling a bear costume, Bewear has the tail, ears, and fur pattern of a red panda, the body shape of a giant panda, and the size of a cave bear.
* NonElemental: Part Normal.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Has a relatively simple design in comparison to other Pokémon, as befitting its basis on mascots.
* NotEvilJustMisunderstood: It is feared through Alola and regarded as life-threatening to raise, but it doesn't mean to hurt others.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Stufful is only 1'08" and 15lbs, but it's considered extremely strong.
* PunnyName:
** Bewear. In addition to "beware", it's also a combination of the words "bear" and "wear", as it's meant to resemble a bear mascot, i.e. a person wearing a bear costume.
** Stufful is a stuffed animal that often gets into scuffles. Nuikoguma meanwhile is a fusion of "stuffed animal" (nuigurumi) and "bear cub" (koguma).
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Stufful looks incredibly adorable, especially when doing that attack that has it adorably flailing its arms at the opponent. Bewear is also rather cute despite its larger size. Unfortunately for any fans of their cuteness, Stufful HatesBeingTouched and Bewear's hugs are potentially deadly due to its strength.
* SecretArt: Stufful and Bewear are the only Pokémon prior to Gen VIII with the Fluffy ability, which halves damage from contact moves while doubling damage from Fire-type moves. Fire-type moves that make contact (such as Fire Punch and Flare Blitz) deal normal damage.
* ShoutOut: A cute, but aggressive red panda? [[Anime/{{Aggretsuko}} Where have we seen that before?]] Bonus points for both works premiering in 2016.
* SuperStrength: Both Stufful and Bewear are much stronger than they look. Bewear in particular can split just about anything in two, including spines.
* UnskilledButStrong: Stufful's attack animation is basically a WimpFight flail. It's also strong enough to knock a grown man flat.
* WeakToFire: With the Fluffy ability, Bewear takes double damage from fire attacks.
* WimpFight: Stufful's arm flail resembles this due to its closed eyes when attacking. Though bear ([[AccidentalPun no pun intended]]) in mind, said flailing is still strong enough to knock a grown man flat.

A Grass-type that resembles a mangosteen. They have a sweet aroma, and is very popular with Alola's populace; both humans who use them as air fresheners, and Pokémon who might try to eat them as a snack. As Bounsweet evolves into Steenee, they gain the ability to defend themselves with their calyx on their heads and with their powerful legs. Steenee later evolves into Tsareena, a Pokémon whose beauty is only matched by their battling prowess.
----
* ActionInitiative: Tsareena's Queenly Majesty prevents these from working, just like Bruxish's Dazzle (funny note, in the presentation trailer, Tsareena uses the skill against a Bruxish).
* AnthropomorphicFood: Bounsweet a walking mangosteen. And unfortunately for them, other Pokémon do see Bounsweet as an edible snack.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: In the wild, only the strongest Steenee get the blessing from the others to evolve.
* AwesomeMomentOfCrowning: When a Steenee is recognized as the strongest, they receive the blessing of the others to evolve, and upon evolution, the stem on Steenee's head changes form to resemble a crown. Touching said crown is also said to instantly calm Tsareena down.
* BadassAdorable: Steenee is a feminine-looking fruit with a playful tomboy-like personality, and can beat opponents using a combination of their hard calyx and legs.
* BossBattle: Serves as the ace for Trial Captain Mallow.
* CorruptTheCutie: By necessity. Bounsweet goes from an adorable, perpetually happy, but dumb Pokémon that often gets preyed upon by other creatures to [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen a powerful, but wicked ruler]] who is more than capable of defending herself and her brethren, but completely trades her childlike joy and innocence for [[IceQueen cold arrogance]] and sadism.
* CuteMonsterGirl: Tsareena and ''especially'' Steenee.
* DeathGlare: Tsareena intimidate their opponents with a gaze and will often turn one on their own trainer if the two aren't in sync, or if the trainer orders the use of an ineffective move.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Inverted. Bounsweet and Steenee are both cute and happy, while Tsareena is cold, regal and dominating.
* {{Dominatrix}}: Tsareena appears to be a [[ParentService G-rated]] take on this trope. She evolves from a Steenee that knows Stomp, also has Trop Kick, Punishment and Power Whip in her moveset, and has legs that are [[DressedLikeADominatrix reminiscent of thigh-high boots]]. The ''jo'' part of her Japanese name Amajo comes from the Japanese word for "queen", but is also used as slang for "dominatrix".
* TheDreaded: Tsareena's garnered this reputation, at least in Galar.
-->'''''Shield'' Pokédex entry:''' ''"This feared Pokémon has long, slender legs and a cruel heart. It shows no mercy as it stomps on its opponents."''
* EnragedByIdiocy: Tsareena will ''not'' be happy about associating with a Trainer she deems to be an idiot.
* FantasticFruitsAndVegetables: A Pokémon that's an anthropomorphic mangosteen.
* {{Foil}}: To the Ralts line, particularly the branched evolution into Gardevoir. Both families consist of a weak base form that becomes more and more humanoid in appearance as it evolves, culminating in a powerful final evolution known as a protector to those she cares for. While Gardevoir is a special attacker with more passive tendencies and UndyingLoyalty to its trainer, Tsareena uses physical attacks and is rather cruel in battle, and will look down on a trainer she considers unworthy. Gallade is a chivalrous knight; in contrast, Tsareena is a haughty queen.
* GenkiGirl: Steenee looks like a cheerful teenage girl.
* GirlishPigtails: Steenee's calyx form a pair of pigtail-like projections, emphasizing their playful tomboyish demeanor.
* GirlyRun: Bounsweet runs by skipping on the ground. Unfortunately, this means people are prone to seeing them as happy, even if they're running for their life.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: Tsareena has a mean kick and [[EnragedByIdiocy does not tolerate stupid or out-of-sync trainers]].
* GreenThumb: They're Grass-types that resemble walking fruit.
* HartmanHips: Steenee and Tsareena give off this impression.
* TheHighQueen: Tsareena seems to act like this. Their ability, Queenly Majesty, references this.
* KickChick: This line is [[OneGenderRace all-female]], and Steenee and Tsareena's main form of attack is with powerful kicks. Their signature move is even a Grass-typed kicking attack, Trop Kick. And in order to evolve Steenee, you need to level them up when they have Stomp in their moveset.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: If the ''Sun'' Pokédex is any indication, Tsareena is known to ''literally'' apply this to defeated opponents. Fittingly, they evolve from Steenee by leveling up while knowing Stomp.
* LadyOfWar: Tsareena certainly gives off this vibe. They have an elegant, regal appearance, is stated to have an upper-class nature, and fights with graceful movements and kicks.
* LegFocus: Tsareena has long legs and many powerful attacks that involve kicking.
* LovableAlphaBitch: Tsareena has shades of this. She acts proud and haughty, looks down on trainers she considers unworthy, and literally curbstomps defeated opponents. However, they also have a sense of justice and use their power to protect their pre-evolutions.
* MagicallyIneptFighter: Like fellow 7th gen Grass-type Lurantis, Tsareena is a bulky Pokémon with a great Attack stat. However, its Special Attack is its lowest stat by a fair margin (at only 50), despite its ability to learn a fair number of special attacks.
* MagikarpPower: Like Ralts beforehand, Bounsweet and Steenee have crummy stats, even for pre-evolved Pokémon, but upon fully evolving, all of their stats skyrocket.
* MightyGlacier: Tsareena has awesome attack and good defenses, but her impressive legs don't do much for her speed.
* MundaneUtility: Bounsweet's aroma makes them a popular air freshener inside houses. In addition, their ''Moon'' dex entry states that Bounsweet sweat can be used as a very concentrated cordial which can be consumed regularly via enough watering-down.
* MeaningfulName:
** Bounce + Sweet, appropriate for a sweet fruit Pokémon that moves via skipping.
** Steenee is a combination of "mangosteen" and "teeny", befitting her size and basis.
** Tsareena takes their name from "tsarina", the English pronunciation of ''tsaritsa'' (царица, Russian for Empress), appropriate for a regal Pokémon. Even more apropos, they're based on a mangosteen, known as "the Queen of Fruits".
** The Japanese names all include ''amai'' (sweet) as sugary plant-types, with Amakaji adding ''kajitsu'' and ''ji'' (fruit child) due to being the youngest and most fruit-like, Amamaiko adding ''maiko'' (dancing girl) due to being the most energetic, and Amajo adding ''joō'' (literally queen, but informally also dominatrix), due to having both a regal aura and domineering personality.
* NoMouth: Tsareena's mouth is hidden by the ruff around its neck. You can't see its mouth in Pokémon Refresh either, even when it's eating.
* {{Ojou}}: All of Tsareena's characteristics metaphorically point to being one. They act like nobility and treat unworthy trainers as lower-class. To drive the point home, their favorite place to be pet in Pokémon Refresh is the berry atop her head, which resembles a crown.
* {{Oneesama}}: Tsareena has the traits of being a protective big sister with wanting to protect the Bounsweet.
* OneGenderRace: This evolutionary line is all female.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Their designs incorporate a lot of dark pink, and they are a OneGenderRace that can only be female.
* PlantPerson: The latter two stages are humanoids.
* PoorPredictableRock: Averted; unlike other Grass mons, Tsareena can learn many non-Grass moves to hit Pokémon that would usually wall them. For example, she can learn High Jump Kick via level up and U-Turn by TM, as well as Play Rough as an Egg Move (breeding with a male Comfey) and Zen Headbutt, Bounce, and Knock Off through Move Tutors.
* PowerNullifier: Queenly Majesty, one of Tsareena's abilities, can negate priority moves.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: Tsareena, a Pokémon with a regal appearance and personality that can dish out powerful kicks.
* SecretArt: Tsareena's unique attack is Trop Kick, which reduces the opponent's Attack stat while dealing damage. Its ability, Queenly Majesty, is also unique, although its effect is identical to Bruxish's Dazzling.
* ShownTheirWork: The Bounsweet line is native to Alola, a region with a tropical, warm climate. Mangosteens don't do well with the cold, needing consistently warm conditions to grow.
* SkipOfInnocence: The way Bounsweet runs looks like a happy skipping, which poses problems when they try to flee danger; the nearby people and Pokémon tend to assume they're happily prancing around and do nothing to help.
* StealthPun: The mangosteen is known as the "queen of fruit", which makes Tsareena's appearance very appropriate.
* StepfordSmiler: Bounsweet constantly has a smile on their face even if they're panicking and running away from a predator.
* SwallowedWhole: A potential fate among Bounsweet is being devoured by Pokémon who are attracted by their delicious scent.
* {{Tomboy}}: Steenee is said to get a more tomboyish personality upon evolving from Bounsweet.
* TookALevelInBadass: Bounsweet is frequently preyed upon due to not being able to defend themselves. However, when they evolve into Steenee, and later into Tsareena, they gain the ability to attack more reliably with their very powerful newfound legs. Tsareena in particular is said to have a queenly air to it, garnering much more respect than their initial form.
* UnsportsmanlikeGloating: Tsareena shows off in victory by kicking the defeated foe while laughing boisterously.
* WaddlingHead: Bounsweet is essentially an armless mangosteen with a face and legs. They becomes more humanoid as they evolve.
* WhipOfDominance: Power Whip is part of her moveset, which is used to complement her {{Dominatrix}} motif.

A Fairy-type Pokémon that attaches picked flowers to a vine that grows from its body, making it resemble a Hawaiian lei. When attacked, it'll distract the enemy by throwing its flowers at it. It can have the Flower Veil ability or Triage, which gives healing moves the highest priority in battle. Due to their healing abilities, they're often used by people in hospitals and Pokémon Centers.
----
* ActionInitiative: If it has the Triage Ability, its recovery moves get increased priority. However, it also increases the priority of health-''draining'' moves such as Draining Kiss and Giga Drain as well, which gives it an offensive advantage in the singles format, unlike how Flower Veil and Symbiosis are strictly suited for doubles.
* ArmoredButFrail: Comfey has good Defenses but a poor base 51 HP stat, meaning it won't last too long against moves that bypass its defensive stats.
* CombatMedic: Triage also gives draining moves priority, meaning it isn't entirely helpless in battle.
* FlowerMotifs: It picks flowers and carries them around, making it look like a lei.
* HealThyself: Can learn Synthesis and Draining Kiss, plus its the only known user of Floral Healing. Its [[ActionInitiative ability]] and [[StoneWall stat spread]] further encourage it to use these types of moves.
* LifeDrain: It receives Draining Kiss, which gets it priority boosted by Triage as it's considered a healing move.
* MeaningfulName:
** Its English name is most likely a play on 'comfy', the plant 'comfrey', which has been used throughout history to treat various different medical problems, and '[[TheFairFolk fey]]'. It's also probably a play on lei, which is what its design is based off of.
** It's Japanes name, Cuwawa, is very likely a fusion of "cure", ''wa'' (ring), and ''furawā'' (flower).
** Comfey's signature ability Triage gives Comfey +3 priority to healing moves. The definition of a Triage is the process of giving priority to treating patients with more serious illnesses/injuries.
* TheMedic:
** Its Ability Triage places it in this role.
** The anime also has Comfey as one of the Pokémon Center assistants in Alola.
* OurFairiesAreDifferent: Don't be fooled by its flowers, this is a pure Fairy-type. That being said...
* PlantPerson: Unusually, despite not being a Grass-type, it can only breed with other Grass Egg group Pokémon and is, in fact, the only non-Grass type to be in the Grass Egg Group. Bizarrely enough, it's not even in the Fairy Egg Group, despite its pure Fairy-typing.
* SecretArt:
** Floral Healing, which heals the target's health by half their max HP, and increases in effectiveness when Grassy Terrain is in effect.
** It's the only Pokémon with the ability Triage, which grants priority to all healing moves.
* StoneWall: An unusual example in that its good defenses are paired with a surprisingly good speed stat. Its offensive stats are still somewhat lacking, with its Attack stat being the worst of the two. Like Shuckle and Klefki, though, its HP stat is rather low to compensate for its high defenses.
