[[folder:Seiryuu]]
The feel of a cold spring morning, the noise of koto music filtering through the air - some would say this embodies the spirit of Clan Seiryuu, the clan founded by the fabled Azure Dragon. Like the founders of the other clans, there’s an air of mystery surrounding them, with only a few disputed legends that attempt to explain their history. The most accepted myth states that the founder of Clan Seiryuu was a fabled mystic who could communicate with spirits. Their gift attracted followers who were so enamoured by their abilities that they were believed to be truly otherworldly. Valuing curiosity, the expansion of knowledge of the unknown and one's point of view, graduates from Seiryuu are frequently heralded as mystics or explorers, famed for their spontaneity and emotional nature. They are also known as a very hospitable clan, with their members often participating in generous causes not simply in the wizarding world but also among those without magic - ''mahounashi'', as they are called in Japan. People in the clan tend to be very idealistic, and carry their values close to their heart. All the better to combat the darkness in the hearts of those with impure intentions.

!! Farah Fujibayashi-Beauregard
!!! SHSL Gonzo Journalist
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/farah_fujibayashi_beauregard.png]]
[[caption-width-right:197:''Anything that gets your blood racing is probably worth doing.'']]
Little is known for sure about “F.C. Fan”, up-and-coming new age journalist extraordinaire known for their biting wit and manic style of prose– and one could argue, perhaps, that they prefer it that way, adding that extra bit of mystery to their already eccentric character– but as for what is known, the facts are these: sometime around a year and a half ago, a writer by that same alias rose to notoriety, via their detailed, fascinating reports on their exploits observing a sinister gang of teenage arsonists in Fukuoka, which they put to paper in real time, finally rounding them all up and publicising in print form once things came to a shuddering conclusion. The eccentric character the reports portrayed captivated and intrigued many; but, alas, F.C. Fan was to disappear as suddenly and elusively as they came, declining interviews and only posting up a few more politically-charged thinkpieces before returning once more to the shadows from which they came.

…However, they would not be gone for long! In recent months, F.C. Fan has risen once more, writing frequently both online and into a few offbeat magazines here and there about their latest exploits. Readers and observers have noted that they are making quite the name for themself as one-of-a-kind, a welcome fresh face in the world of subjective journalism. They take great pride in the fact that they do not simply report their stories, but make them, almost always being involved in the very events they relay. Their tone is coarse, blunt, but also eloquent, passionate, and undeniably fast-paced; in that respect, perhaps it is no surprise that the enigmatic youth under the mask is none other than one Farah Fujibayashi-Beauregard, devil-may-care politicker and self-proclaimed “continential drifter”, whose unique writing talent has earned them the interest of Hope’s Peak Academy– and the well-deserved title of “Super High-School Level Gonzo Journalist”.
* AnimalMotifs: Rats. They're the rat kid.
* IntrepidReporter: Of the "gonzo journalist" sort.
* MotorMouth: Quick-witted, with a tongue to match.

!! Itona Takenaka
!!! SHSL Marine Animal Trainer
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/itona_takenaka.png]]
[[caption-width-right:197:''I've always been a better rule breaker than a rule maker.'']]
Known internationally as the dashing “Captain Caspian” of the “Seafoam Sisters and Captain Caspian Spectacular” stage show, most just know him as Itona Takenaka. Itona was born in Japan but lived in Honolulu, Hawaii for most of his life. He’s one of the youngest and most well known marine animal trainer worldwide, working at one of the most popular and biggest aquariums, Supermarine Aquarium. He’s been known to be an advocate against certain companies treatment towards captive marine mammals. He also campaigns for improved conditions for the animals they train and take care of. Eventually, Itona was invited to HPA as the “Super High School Level Marine Animal Trainer”, to which he accepted.
* AnimalMotifs: Either dolphins or sharks. Dolphins were featured in relation to him in the roster video and he has sharp teeth like a shark.
%%* BigOlEyebrows
* ExtremeOmnivore: Apparently he ate a piece of paper with calligraphy ink on it and raw seaweed. Somehow, both were apparently delicious.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Usually described as either spacing out or not paying attention and tends to have an unnerving stare. While usually harmless and keeps to himself, there's just...something off about him.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Most likely, since it's his talent to take care of said animals. He's a lot more outspoken when it comes to animal rights and is much more friendly when he's interacting with creatures.
* GracefulLoser: After [[spoiler:placing second in the dance competition]], he's the most calm about it, even offering handshakes to the winners.
%%* IcyBlueEyes
* PrecisionFStrike: Says one after discovering [[spoiler:Miyu's "corpse".]]
* TheQuietOne: Doesn't say much and even when he does, it's not a lot.
* TheStoic: Related to the above, he isn't the most emotionally expressive member of the cast.

!! Mi-Ke[[spoiler:/Miwa Arai]]
!!! SHSL Feline Behaviourist
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mi_ke.png]]
[[caption-width-right:197:''If you were and you are, you're a Jellicle Cat.'']]
If you live in the Tashirojima area of Japan, you may have heard of this lanky marvel. They came into the public eye as a local perculilarity, a teenage living amoung the cats as if they were one themself. However, when investigated, Mi-ke was more than happy to the authorities proof of their actual address, and interest dropped. Those that did take interest, though, had purpose, and came to them for advice on their domestic cats. Though not the most eloquent writer, they have an advice column in the local newspaper talking about how to take care of your cat and particular behaviours to watch out for. More academically, they have posted several online papers on the subject, and have even been recruited in helping locate a tiger that escaped from a zoo in a nearby town.

[[spoiler:They are an accomplice to the murder in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4, they are executed as a result of the mistrial.]]
* AnimalMotifs: Cats, obviously.
* CatchPhrase: To quote, "Motherfucker!"
* CuddleBug: They are extremely affectionate with their friends.
* GuiltComplex: [[spoiler:As shown in Chapter 3, Mi-ke's guilt complex is so strong, they believe everything bad that's happened in the game happened because of them.]]
* HeterosexualLifePartners / PlatonicLifePartners: With Shiba
* [[spoiler:ItsAllMyFault: During Chapter 3.]]
* MeaningfulName: "Mi-ke" is a term used for Japanese Bobtails with a three coloured coat, which is seen as a sign of good luck in Japan. It translates to triple hair.
* MessyHair: It looks like they lied it in a braid and forgot about it.
* [[spoiler:MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Upon realizing that they put their friends in real danger during Chapter 3.]]
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: They don't seem to recognize other people's personal space.
* NoSocialSkills: The cause of the above trope.
* [[spoiler:OfficialCouple: As of Chapter 3, with Kris.]]
* OnlyOneName
* SirSwearsalot
* TheNicknamer: Provides nicknames to the majority of the students the evolve over time based on Mi-ke's view of them
** Notable, they only use the real names of those they consider close friends. If they use your full name exculsively, that's a very back sign.
* [[spoiler:VillainousBSOD: During the Chapter 3 trial, Mi-ke experiences a break down when the very real possibility of Shiba being executed it brought up, as well as seeing their other friend's reactions to their actions.]]
** [[spoiler:Happens again when Kris starts to threaten Miyu's family, since Mi-ke was not informed of that part of the plan.]]
* [[spoiler:YoungerthanTheyLook]]: [[spoiler:At 15 years old and 6 feet / 183 cm tall, they are both the youngest and the third-tallest of their class. Mi-ke hides their age because people rarely believe they're that young; they've gotten in trouble at their middle school because no one thought they were supposed to be there.]]

!! Shiba
!!! SHSL Decora Fashion Model
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiba.png]]
[[caption-width-right:197:''Own your individuality and you will prosper like no other.'']]
One of the most interesting aspects of Japanese culture is Street Fashion, known to encompass a variety of different outrageous clothing styles. One of the more well known fashions trends in this category is Decora fashion, a style that can be recognized by its extraordinarily bright variety of colors, tons upon tons of accessories, and a generally cutesy and anime-eque aesthetic. Within the niche group of models that showcase this style, most can only recognize one name in particular: Shiba! This fun-sized fashion model has captured the interest of many through their bold outfits, captivating androgynous appearance, and all around memorable and charming persona. Not only have they made a name for themself through Street Fashion, but they’ve also been featured on many catwalks and runways, in magazines, and through numerous sponsorships and brand deals. Despite not having been in the public eye for very long, Shiba has definitely created a boom in recent media and made quite a name for themself in the realm of Decora Fashion.

[[spoiler:They end up as one of the victims of Chapter 5.]]

* BewareTheNiceOnes: [[spoiler:During the Chapter 3 trial, Shiba loses their temper at both Kris and Miyu.]]
%%* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:Chapter 3 was kind to nobody.]]
%%* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Mi-ke
* MeaningfulName: "Shiba" calls to mind the shiba inu, and a lot of their accessories are dog-themed.
%%* OnlyOneName
* PintsizedPowerhouse: Shiba is quite strong, having spent years doing judo. They just look really cute and small.

!! Subaru Kurosawa
!!! SHSL Horror Mangaka
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/subaru_kurosawa.png]]
[[caption-width-right:197:''Where there is no imagination there is no horror.'']]
The child of a renowned scream queen and a special effects makeup artist, Subaru Kurokawa inherited her parents’ strong affinity for all things grotesque and macabre and decided to follow them into the horror genre at an early age. Unlike his parents, Subaru embraced pen and ink as his medium of choice, combining his pronounced love of the horrific and morbid imagination to great effect as a horror mangaka. Her debut one-shot was published in a monthly horror magazine under her pen name, Mizar, when she was just fourteen years old and quickly attracted glowing praise for her skillful blending of psychological terror with visceral scenes of horror. While ‘Mizar’’s successive works, particularly his first serialized manga, Ill-Starred Girl, have earned him a devoted fan following, almost nothing was known about the identity of the person behind the pen name until very recently. Few suspected that the one behind ‘Mizar’ could be a mere high school student, let alone one with strong ties to fairly well-respected figures in the horror community, and when Subaru stepped forwards and revealed this to be the case, it netted the young mangaka a rush of publicity and eventually, an invitation to Hope’s Peak Academy.

[[spoiler:A casualty of the third motive, Subaru succumbs to heatstroke and passes away.]]

* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: They have black hair, but the effect is similar.
* PerkyGoth: Definitely carries this vibe, he's certainly equally as cheerful as his work is morbid.

!! Takako Imai
!!! SHSL Fashion Blogger
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takako_imai.png]]
[[caption-width-right:197:''Today, party people, I give you the death of Hope's Peak High~!'']]
Takako Imai is a name anyone even remotely interested in the field of fashion would know. With her word being enough to restore or downright eviscerate a brand’s reputation in the eyes of fashionistas around the country, it’s difficult to call her sway in the fashion world petty. Originally gaining recognition for her good looks, street photography and commentary on emerging trends in the Harajuku area, along with her ability to modify practically anything to look good, Takako’s Ameba blog and associated Website/YouTube channel have both quickly risen in stature, exploding in popularity after one of her liveblogs of Chanel’s, in her own words, “droopy pathetic grandma curtains” of a new spring/summer collection, Takako soon becoming a top-ranking blogger at just 17. Since then, Takako’s success hasn’t been limited to just online blogging, her face plastered on advertisements, her brand-sponsored #looks garnering attention for each company that held her as an ally, and most impressively, the upcoming launch of her new fashion line, 'CHAOS DEMON', that will set you back ¥20,000 for a mere sniff. Takako herself, however, can still be found browsing the trendiest new stores of Tokyo, if you’re looking for her that hard.

[[spoiler:Despite supposedly getting blown up in Chapter 5, she doesn't turn up a victim as she survived the event. As it would turn out, she's also the one behind the explosion and manages to get away with Joon's murder successfully.]]

* AttentionWhore
* [[spoiler: BerserkButton: Most of the times she's physically attacked people outside it being for the laugh have been due to.... a particular kind of insult.]]
* BloodKnight: Takako practically makes it a hobby to revel in other peoples' arguments, but given the opportunity to fight...
** [[spoiler: At the end of the 5th trial when it's revealed she was the one responsible for killing Joon, Takako gets into fights with both Reiko and Clove, apparently revelling in choking one and biting the other so hard she walks with a limp.]]
* CantTakeCriticism: Well, she threatened to "slaughter" Shiba for laughing at her during a fight, despite having done that to them a solid thirty seconds beforehand.
* CheshireCatGrin: Has mastered the art of giving one of these.
* CombatStilettos: Wears these during the dance event and isn't afraid to kick people with them.
* DissonantLaughter: Reeeeeeeally enjoys adding "lol", "lmao" or just a little giggle into her dialogue in... practically every situation. Such as serious conversations, murder trials, or when someone gets injured.
* FoeRomanceSubtext: Not ''romantic'', exactly, but Takako starts hate-flirting with Miyu during the fifth trial. She treats the possibility of a bloody fight with her as a ''date''.
* TheGadfly: It seems that one of her favourite pastimes is bullying people.
* HypocriticalHumor: Throughout Chapter 2's dance event, she calls out several of her opponents for unsporting behavior. This ignores that she's laughed at their misfortunes, overreacted to minor incidents, and tried to kick or stomp on people with her stiletto heels (at one point almost ''stabbing Kris in the face'').
* HugeSchoolgirl: 6'1", not counting however much her heels add. For comparison, three of her female classmates tie for second at just ''5'7"'' -- still quite tall, just not in comparison to her or Tenpō.
* TheIdiotFromOsaka: The other Osaka students aren't an example of this, but Takako ''is''. She spends her time getting overly invested in fights (if not joining in on them herself), reveling in both the good and bad results of her reckless actions, and in general not taking ''anything'' seriously. About the only thing that ''doesn't'' line up is that at present she can afford an expensive occupation in fashion.
* NoOneCouldSurviveThat: [[spoiler: After being thrown off a particular cliff by an explosion, a fall that's killed multiple people, and being trapped in a tree during a forest fire, Takako walks out with a mild concussion, bruising, and a couple of broken bones.]]
* OddFriendship: With Miyu. You'd think they would be at each others throats, but nope. [[spoiler:This finally falls apart in Chapter 5 after Takako mocks two of Miyu's closest companions immediately after one is executed.]]
* [[spoiler: ReportsOfMyDeathWereGreatlyExaggerated: During Chapter 5, Takako's body is the 4th discovered, trapped in a tree in the burning forest..... until there's no file for her body and she starts groaning and demanding ketamine from visitors.]]
* StatuesqueStunner: Ties with Shinobu for the tallest student at 6' 1", and she's quite attractive.
%%* UnluckilyLucky
* WoundedGazelleGambit: [[spoiler:Takako is severely injured in the process of killing Joon. She claims that a third party attacked them both, even saying that she wouldn't have dove off the cliff if her life hadn't been in danger. Between this and last-minute confusion over another student's condition, the class believes her and goes right into a mistrial.]]

[[folder:Suzaku]]
With noble Clan Suzaku, simply hearing the name among wizards brings to mind the image of one’s thumping heart in the middle of a marathon, or a tremendous victory against all odds. Even the story of its founder, the Vermillion Bird, is unlikely. Tradition’s most popular story about its founder is that they were born from non-magical parents in an isolated village, before becoming one of the most famous wizards in Japan and a renowned samurai. And as those in the house know, this didn’t come about just by idling. To be a Suzaku, one must have a drive, a passion for success against all odds. One cannot live life without facing pain. And indeed, those who come from this clan are often famous athletes or political figures, who fight for causes for the betterment of everyone. People in this clan tend to be very dogmatic, and would do most anything to succeed. Even if that comes at a very high cost.

!! Airi Inoue
!!! SHSL Sculptor
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/airi_inoue.png]]
[[caption-width-right:197:''I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.'']]
Airi Inoue is the young sculpting virtuoso that has taken the art world by storm! Her first notable appearance was as the overall winner of the National Junior Sculpting Competition when she was only 13. After that, she went on to enter 30 more national and international sculpting competitions over five years, scoring highly in all but three of them. It was when she turned 15 that she started her online service, Above the Well, that let her sell her sculptures to art dealers and allowed fans of her to commission unique sculptures from her. Inoue soon became a household name in the art world for her sculptures’ fine details and form. With all her successes, it would be a crime for HPA to not offer her a spot!

[[spoiler:She is the culprit of Chapter 1, but because Miyu survived, the class votes not to have a trial and spares Airi. She is later murdered in Chapter 4 by Joon-young, though the class ends up mistrialing.]]

* AloofDarkHairedGirl
* DCupDistress: Her breasts, while not ridiculously large, are noticeable, and she isn't a fan of the attention they've garnered in the past.
* [[DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength Does Not Know Her Own Strength]]: Seems to be this around [[spoiler:Mitsuo]]. When she wants to punch him, she knocks him out. [[spoiler:When she wants to get into a catfight, she ''rips his throat out by mistake'']].
* FriendToAllChildren: She definitely has a soft spot for the younger children she finds in the labyrinth, and [[spoiler:the young versions of the founders]]. There's also [[spoiler:her little brother Naoya...]]
* HiddenDepths: More like "underdemonstrated depths," since her SHSL title gives it away, but Airi does have a passion for sculpting. She also has a genuine appreciation for the arts, and admires those artists who can do things she can't.
* JerkassRealization: After [[spoiler:tearing out Mitsuo's throat in the labyrinth]], she realizes how much her actions have been hurting others.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: At least, until she gets a satisfactory punch in.
* YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry: She seems chill most of the time, but has a nasty temper.

!! Mio Agatsuma
!!! SHSL Survival Gamer
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mio_agatsuma.png]]
[[caption-width-right:197:''Here's some advice: stay alive.'']]
As the leader of the survival game team, Brave☆Destiny, Mio Agatsuma is a name that’s familiar to all who enjoy airsoft. They may only be in high school, but there’s no denying they’re one of the top players. As a combination scout and rifleman, she’s lead the team to victory countless times, both in private matches and tournaments. Ever since their rise to fame, they’ve been to go-to model for companies looking to promote their gear.

[[spoiler:She is the victim of Chapter 3, murdered by Miyu.]]

* AnimalMotifs: Tigers. Unfortunately, she's in Suzaku, not Byakko.
* CuteBruiser
* [[DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength Does Not Know Their Own Strength]]: They casually kicked down a classroom door while trying to get inside.
* AFatherToHisMen
* FriendtoAllLivingThings: Gets along rather well with most of the critters at school, to almost humorous levels.
* TheGunslinger: Airsoft guns, but guns nonetheless.
* HotBlooded: They're very passionate, to say the least.
* LeeroyJenkins: Ran straight out into an active battlefield and through a blazing fire without even stopping to think.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: For someone who spends so much time in the labyrinth covered in blood, they don't seem to notice.
* TeamMom: Very protective of the people they're fond of. They weren't the team captain for nothing, after all.

!! Mitsuo Ueno
!!! SHSL Composer
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mitsuo_ueno.png]]
[[caption-width-right:197:''Works of art make rules; rules do not make works of art.'']]
When a new idol group- JAQK- hit the stage, many news stations and magazines were surprised to find that the most popular member wasn’t actually a true member and rather the composer working behind the scenes! Having written songs ever since he could play the piano, his mother saw talent and refined it as fast as possible and used her own name to get him his start in the music industry. Since gaining his own fanbase Mitsuo has branched out and begun to compose for other artists along with JAQK, however many are still waiting for the day he decides to either officially join JAQK’s or starts a solo career believing him staying away from the spotlights is a waste of his abilities.

[[spoiler:It's revealed in Chapter 4's trial that he was the one who murdered Shinobu T. He's also a contributing factor in the mistrial of Chapter 4.]]

* DontYouDarePityMe: Mitsuo does not take it well when people try to express sympathies to him after [[spoiler:his love interest Joon is murdered]] and even threatens to kill one of the people defending him.
* EmbarrassingNickname: "Mittens", a nickname from Mi-ke that Joon-young starts using after overhearing it.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler:With Joon-young]]
* WakeUpFighting: After being killed in the Labyrinth by [[spoiler:Airi]], he emerges in the real world swinging, unfortunately for the teammates who are still lingering in the area. He ends up breaking Holy's nose.

!!! SHSL Social Media Manager
[[quoteright:182:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinobu_smol_6.png]]
[[caption-width-right:182:''We like our Tweets how we like our hamburgers: better than anyone expects from a fast food joint.'']]
“Okkanai Designs” is a clothing company that prides itself over it’s creepy-cute aesthetic. Originally being unknown to the public, it recently came to national attention through its mascot’s Twitter account. The mascot, a slime girl called Bechabechan, became popular through her sassy personality and interactions with fellow users. Her most popular tweets have been retweeted by the thousands and have circulated throughout other social media platforms. It was later learned that the company owner’s nephew, Shinobu Kanamori, was behind the account and has been running it for almost five years now. Upon learning this, Hope’s Peak reached out to offer him an invitation to their school. It’s reported that Okkanai Design’s marketing team will continue to keep Bechabechan alive in his stead while he continues his education.
* TheBully: Picks on other students, specifically Tsukuyomi. [[spoiler: Seiji's death seems to have caused him to [[HeelRealization rethink his behavior, but he still bullies others.]] ]]
* BreakTheHaughty:[[spoiler: The Chapter 2 mistrial. Once Yukie reveals they got it wrong, they immediately turn on him. He threatens everyone in his fear/confusion, questions the reality of the situation, and ''pulls out a knife'' when Kris gets near him. Once the knife is gone, he breaks down into tears. ]]
* ClusterFBomb: Tends to do this when he gets overemotional. Notably after [[spoiler:the Chapter 2 mistrial]], he realizes that several people think [[spoiler:he's the killer]] and responds with this.
* CoolShades: An orange visor, to be exact.
* MascotWithAttitude: Bechabechan, the character he's the mastermind behind. He doesn't like being associated with her for some reason.
* OfficialCouple: As of Chapter 4, [[spoiler:with Tsukuyomi]]
* SmugSnake: Oh, yes. Seems to have dialed back since [[spoiler:Seiji's death.]]
* TheNapoleon: Being 4'11", he's the smallest of all the students. He tries to keep a cool head, but fails miserably.
* TheNicknamer: Uses "[defining feature] Kid" to refer to his classmates, apparently to belittle them.

!! Sollith Izumi / [[spoiler:Kohori Izumi]]
!!! SHSL Brawler

Sometimes, the answer to all of your problems is a swift punch to the face. Ok, maybe not, but when it comes to physical combat, you do what it takes to get the job done, and that’s Sollith Izumi, the SHSL Brawler. She’s known for her not for her fighting, but for her reputation in ending fights, going from what seemed like vigilantism to receiving formal challenges from people attempting to besmirch her perfect win streak. Sollith is also known for defeating opponents bigger than her, Armed Opponents, Multiple opponents at once, and Multiple Armed Opponents at once. Having refused all interviews on the subject of her brawls, her reasoning is unknown but it’s safe to say she doesn’t just randomly pick fights, there is definitely a method to her.

[[spoiler:She is the first of three victims to be killed in Chapter 5.]]

* HotBlooded: She's a brawler, after all.

* AfraidOfBlood: Took this reaction to the first murder.
* AscendedFanboy: [[spoiler: Has stated in a number of threads to have taken up his talent due to his fondness for the Literature/ArseneLupin novels.]]
* ClearMyName: [[spoiler: During the second trial, due to a few bits of evidence matching up with him, he comes under fire as a top suspect for a good portion of the trial and has to clear his name. 208* EmbarrassingFirstName: Isn't too fond of his first name, and prefers being referred to by his surname.
** He doesn't protest when Mi-ke calls him Tsukuyomi, however, implying that he's alright with friends calling him by his first name.
* GentleGiant: Standing at 6'0", he's the tallest member of Suzaku and among the tallest of the students as a whole, but he's a big softie, if not a bit shy.
* InsistentTerminology: He'd ''really'' rather you call him Sato.
* [[spoiler:LovableRogue: A master thief, sure, but he's no less of a nice guy for it.]]
* MeaningfulName: His first name contains the character for "moon", befitting his moon/night sky motif.
* NervousWreck: Is portrayed this way.
* NiceGuy: Generally polite to others and treats them kindly.
* OfficialCouple: As of Chapter 4, [[spoiler:with Shinobu Kanamori]]
* OpaqueNerdGlasses: Big square frames that hide his eyes.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: Tries to pass himself off as this, though it’s very clear that he’s hiding ''something''…
* [[spoiler:PhantomThief: His talent, as it turns out.]]
* PrecisionFStrike: Gives * ProneToTears: Quite sensitive and withdrawn, and quick to cry…

* ProneToTears: Quite sensitive and withdrawn, and quick to cry…
* ShrinkingViolet: Very shy, and greatly dislikes attention.
* SignificantBirthdate: According to WordOfGod, his birthday, November 11th, is this. [[spoiler:He shares a birthday with Maurice Leblanc, author of the Literature/ArseneLupin stories.]]

[[folder:Byakko]]
Often overlooked, Clan Byakko lurks within the casting shadows of their rival clans, but it doesn’t make them any less formidable. As deceptively unassuming as the clan formed after them, the White Tiger was rumored to be a cat-like yokai disguised as a human being. They lived among mortals in secret, attempting to bridge the gap that had developed between spirits and humans. Those who embody Byakko’s values mend and aid, both in the figurative and literal sense. While graduated students of the clan lack the recognition and accolades of their peers, they take on necessary, but thankless tasks with pride. Wars cannot be won without medics. Peace cannot be reestablished without obliviators. Meaningful contributions matter far more than notoriety in Clan Byakko. People in this clan tend to be composed, and rely on their keen intuition to guide them down the right path. Regardless if it’s the path less traveled.

!! Clove Rosenburg
!!! SHSL Investigative Journalist
[[quoteright:202:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clove_icon_mahou.png]]
[[caption-width-right:202: I am grateful to journalism for waking me up to the realities of the world.]]
The daughter of two journalism tycoons that head the '''Berlin Sun''', Clove Rosenburg has followed in their footsteps from a relatively young age. First making headlines after exposing the principal of her school for embezzling thousands of dollars from the school’s funds, Clove then went on to bigger stories, building up her school’s newspaper club in the process.

When not in school, Clove works as a junior reporter at her parents’ newspaper with three of her older siblings. What she learned there allowed her to make her high school’s newspaper club surprisingly professional, enough so that the club worked with the police to track down the source of a human trafficking operation run out of Berlin’s biggest opera house. Shedding light on the problem caused a nationwide scandal involving several politicians either directly or indirectly involved with the ring. Her family has drawn the criticism of some by letting a highschool student work on such serious stories, but they couldn’t stop Clove even if they felt like it was necessary. In addition to writing articles, Clove runs a blog about her pet birds that shows a different side of the investigative journalist. She currently resides in Japan and attends Hope’s Peak, a school for prolific youth at the top of their fields. Rumor has it that Clove is investigating a lead in the country, but nothing is confirmed.

* BerserkButton: Calm, cool, and collected, Clove prefers to battle with words instead of fists. The first time she ever physically fought on another student? [[spoiler:After Takako, ch. 5's murderer, throttled Reiko during the first mastermind trial. Unsatisfied when the fight was broken up by Itona, Clove vowed to get her pound of flesh from the other girl in exchange from the bite she took out of her girlfriend's leg.]]
** BeCarefulWhatYouSay: She never expected yelling [[spoiler:"die alone then, your mascara’s clumpy,” among other insults, to hit Takako as hard as they did - hard enough that she began choking Clove.]] Guess someone found Takako's BerserkButton?
** MisplacedRetribution: While Reiko may have started the fight with Takako, Clove was determined to end it. While that was one motivation for Clove taking a swing (or two, or three) at the fashion blogger, [[spoiler:every mistrial has made Clove more bitter towards many of her classmates. Enough so to warrant that sort of reaction.]]
* DividedWeFall: A trope Clove makes a point of warning against in trials before inevitably falling into it
* DueToTheDead: After [[spoiler:failing to find Tenpō's murderer]], Clove starts rearranging the flowers on the deceased's pensieve, saying that this may be the only closure they can get.
** [[spoiler: FailureKnight: In a few threads, Clove mentions that Shinobu Tenpō bore a striking resemblance to her older brother, Felix - down to the ginger hair and favorite color. In light of their falling out...no wonder Clove was so vengeful after her clanmate's death. She was, as Clove admits, essentially a ReplacementGoldfish who helped her work out some metaphorical demons she brought with her to Mahaoutokoro. Sorry, Tenpo...]]
* FamilyBusiness: Can definitely be applied to the Rosenburg family paper, at which both Clove’s parents and three of her siblings work. The Berlin Sun is generally a huge point of pride for the whole family, and journalism has sort of become a bonding thing among them.
* GermanicEfficiency: Stays on task when she needs to, even when her a few of classmates get stuck in the oven during the chapter 2 investigation.
* IntrepidReporter: Of the "investigative journalist" sort.
* MeaningfulName: WordOfGod confirms that her last name, Rosenburg, has meaning both in terms of roses being a symbol of romance and the strong ties the flower has to Revolutionary Girl Utena, a show that shares some similar themes as her character, as well as being one of her favorites!
* MorningRoutine: God forbid you interrupt Clove’s morning routine, which is the only thing that makes her able to function in the morning. Otherwise, she’s a zombie. Shown when she's woken up by [[spoiler: the chapter 2 body announcement,]] when Clove is too tired to realize she walked down to the cold storage in her Minion pajamas. Hilarity ensues.
* NerdGlasses: Red ones. She's incredibly nearsighted, so the thick frames are necessary.
* NervesOfSteel: Required by her talent, as Clove runs into some pretty upsetting crimes as an investigative journalist. This isn’t to say that she’s completely unshakable...Clove just has a higher threshold for keeping her cool and hiding her panic than some other students. She still feels these emotions quite a bit, but they take more to express. [[spoiler: Shown during the investigation of Shinobu Tenpō's murder, where she appeared almost numb after discovering the body and referred to it as "the corpse." She then did a complete turnaround by crying after Tenpō's trial when the class failed to find the correct killer.]]
* PrivateEyeMonologue: Often happening in Clove’s head. Would never dream of doing this where someone could hear her because that would be embarrassing, but sometimes it slips out without her realizing it. Oops?
* ProudToBeAGeek: In her chapter 3 talk with Reiko, she openly admits to [[spoiler:really like shoujo animes. "Anime - that's quite the accusation. Romantic comedies are a wonderful way to end the day after dealing with corporate crime, it helps me destress! Even if it's absolutely, undeniably, sappy."]]
* TheNicknamer: She doesn't bother with honorifics in most cases, using them only with people she greatly respects. But then stops using them when she gets closer to said person and completely ignores them with her fellow Byakko students? In a conversation with Mi-ke, Clove admitted, "I don't fully understand the Japanese custom of calling one by their last name."
* OfficialCouple: As of Chapter 4, [[spoiler:with Reiko]]
* QuirkyCurls: Clove’s hair is frizzy, curly, and tends to stick out all over the place. It generally won’t be tamed, but can be made to look halfway presentable with a comb.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Played in terms of her personality while working, which is all business, vs. during free time, which is polite and friendly.
* TragicDream: Clove was not a fan of the Elysian Dreams motive. Although the Byakko and Seiryuu students got dreams that [[spoiler: reflected their ideal life, one without loss or regrets,]] she stayed awake for almost three days straight to avoid them. It didn't matter, as she fell asleep in the end.
* UnknownRival: Towards Mitsuo Ueno. Clove's always considered him smart due to his contributions [[spoiler: and meddling]] in trials, but the feeling appears one-sided.
* WhoNeedsEnemies?: Has this relationship with Miyu Suzuki. With the way they collaborate on labyrinths and mastermind evidence, are both mutual friends of Kris Tenshi, and share a love of birds as well as somewhat cold upbringings by wealthy parents, there might have been grounds for them to be allies... however, they really, really don't get along. [[spoiler: Clove's nosiness as a journalist and Miyu posing as the Byakko in ch. 3's murder investigation both opened old wounds. Said wounds were deep enough to cause a two-sided grudge.]] Because of their different motivations for finding the Ouryuu's "little one," they still work together, albeit begrudgingly.

!! Deborah Daze
!!! SHSL Carhop
[[quoteright:202:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_18.png]]
[[caption-width-right:202: The monster was the best friend I ever had.]]
Coquettish and charming, Deborah Daze has seemingly become the face of the '''Blood Orange—''' a popular, retro drive-in located on the outskirts of Tokyo. With both her friendly attitude and contagious smile, Deborah has stolen the hearts of many customers and passersby. In fact, the carhop is an online sensation with a steadily growing fanbase to boot. The '''Blood Orange''' takes great pride in Deborah— and happily uses her to promote the establishment. She’s their ''golden girl!''

[[spoiler:A casualty of the third motive, Deborah succumbs to heatstroke and passes away.]]

* CreepyGood: At least embodies this aesthetic, considering she works at a horror-themed drive-in.
* DriveInTheater: Her place of employment is one of these.
* MaltShop: Works at a [[RuleOfThree drive-in]] with this sort of aesthetic.

!! Jinzaemon Hasekura
!!! SHSL Boxer
[[quoteright:202:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_19_t.png]]
[[caption-width-right:202:Henshin!]]
Nobody saw it coming: not his opponent, not the crowd. When he stepped into the ring, no one thought much of him at all. He was smaller than his opponent, with a form that seemed lax, seemed loose. But seeing is believing – and boy did Japan see as Hasekura’s killer right hook landed him another knockout victory as Japan’s new and currently reigning high school champ. There was a fire in his eyes that his opponents despised and the media adored, and while others claimed he was invincible, he simply shrugged his shoulders, said it came naturally: with determination like his, there’s no way he could ever lose in the ring!

[[spoiler:As the class mistrialed in Chapter 2 for his clanmate Shinobu's murder, he was randomly selected to be executed, despite being innocent. During the Chapter 3 trial he is outed as the SHSL Vigilante.]]

* BoxingBattler: He boxes, after all.
* DelinquentHair: Bleached yellow, like the stereotype of many delinquents.
* HotBlooded: More or less.

!! Kris Tenshi[[spoiler:/Shizuka Matsuoka]]
!!! SHSL Street Magician
[[quoteright:202:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/n2jgie4.png]]
[[caption-width-right:202:The magic of the streets is the mixing of the errand and the epiphany.]]
As his stage name would suggest, Kris Tenshi prides himself as being on par if not better than the famed illusionist Criss Angel at the art of street magic - and unlike most other wannabes, this young man can certainly back it up! A seasoned performer of both parlour and large-scale performances with his signature hit-and-run style, the Super High School Level Street Magician is a household name these days - it’s hard to find someone who hasn’t caught a glimpse of this blue-haired pretty boy. His extravagant acts often come as unprepared as the crowd to see him, and when he’s done he can disappear into said crowds in the blink of an eye. All the world’s just a stage for Kris Tenshi, so who knows where he might pop up next? You might actually be part of his next big trick, and you wouldn’t even know it until it’s over!

[[spoiler:He is an accomplice to the murder in Chapter 3 and during the trial is outed as the SHSL Hitman. Later on, he is successfully convicted and executed for the murders of both Sollith and unintentionally Shiba in Chapter 5.]]

* BewareTheNiceOnes: [[spoiler:After the class fails to identify Tenpō's killer, Kris backs one of the suspects against a wall and delivers a very long threat against him, even managing to take his knife and turn it against him.]] It's enough to unsettle several classmates that find this completely uncharacteristic.
** OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Even the narration notes that this is a side of Kris that was unexpected. [[spoiler:Maybe the fact that this isn't the first friend he's watched die of frostbite that has something to do with it...]]
** It returns in absolutely devastating force in [[spoiler:Chapter 3, once his real talent as the SHSL Hitman is revealed. Many characters note the sheer callousness and nastiness with which he conducted himself, and while it's mostly revealed to be a farce, the damage is certainly done.]]
* BigBrotherInstinct: Kris is extremely fond of his family, but especially his younger sister Mei, and extends that same fondness to some of his classmates. Even the ones that are older than him.
* ColorCodedCharacters: Blue. Hilariously enough, he's part of Clan Byakko, whose colour scheme is primarily green.
* CosmicPlaything: Everyone in the class is subject to terrible luck (thanks to the RandomNumberGod), but after several especially cruel Labyrinth incidents, Kris is convinced the castle is singling him out for the worst of it.
* DeadpanSnarker: Not above making quips that show off his dry wit.
* DueToTheDead: He's the one who first conjures up the chrysanthemums for [[spoiler: Tenpō]].
* [[spoiler:EmbarrassingFirstName: "What kind of Magician name, let alone Hitman name, is Shizuka?"]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Much of this with regards to [[spoiler:his true talent:]]
** [[spoiler:His proficiency with knives.]]
** [[spoiler:His outbursts of anger against those who chose to evade justice.]]
** But most tellingly, [[spoiler:the fact that he was sorted into Byakko despite being perfect for Seiryuu. Then you remember that the students in Byakko take on the thankless jobs no one else will, and it starts to make more sense.]]
* GallowsHumor: [[spoiler:His way of coping with going through two [[CruelAndUnusualDeath very painful deaths]] in the Labyrinth.]]
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has one under his left eye in the shape of a cross. Subverted in that it was self-inflicted as part of his performing persona and does not have any real purpose other than to look cool. [[spoiler: Heck, it's actually made from waterproof ink.]]
* [[spoiler:HitmanWithAHeart: Despite his profession, he shows himself to be absolutely this trope as he dearly regrets the lengths he has had to go in order to save Miyu, and that's not including the genuine love he has for both her and Mi-Ke, amongst others.]]
* LastSecondWordSwap: Nearly drops the [[PrecisionFStrike f-bomb]] when he realizes that the fursona misunderstanding is spreading to even more people, but changes it to a milder [[GoshDangItToHeck "fiddlesticks"]].
* LikeBrotherAndSister: With Miyu. Borders on PlatonicLifePartners, with the main disqualifier being that he has closer relationships with his other relatives and with Mi-ke.
* MagiciansAreWizards: In the most literal sense possible.
* NervesOfSteel: It's surprising how well-composed he is when faced with the advent of the Mutual Killing Game. Not to mention how terrifying he is when he's angry. [[spoiler:Given his real talent, this does not come across as a surprise.]]
* NiceGuy: While stern and no-nonsense when faced with certain situations, ultimately he's this. He makes a conscious effort to be polite and charming to most. [[spoiler:In the advent of the Chapter 3 trial, he's more along the lines of JerkWithAHeartOfGold.]]
* OddFriendship: Seems to be developing a lot of these, from Reiko to Miyu to ''Kunie'' of all spirits.
* [[spoiler:OfficialCouple: As of Chapter 3, with Mi-Ke.]]
* PrecisionFStrike: Has one after the death of [[spoiler:Shinobu Tenpō]]. It's not the last.
* PunnyNames: Acknowledged in-character and by his creator: Kris Tenshi is a deliberate AffectionateParody and ShoutOut to famous magician Criss Angel, and it's specifically noted that it happens to be an [[StageNames alias]] that Kris' sister gave to him, which ended up sticking. [[spoiler:His real name is revealed during the Chapter 3 trial to be Shizuka Matsuoka, making it also a case of EmbarrassingFirstName.]]
* SnarkToSnarkCombat: With Miyu, especially after she starts considering him a friend.
%%* StageNames
* TragicKeepsake: His jacket. It's an open secret that it was his late mother's jacket. [[DeceasedParentsAreTheBest faithfully kept even after the fifteen years she's passed]]. [[spoiler:The bloodstained handprints adorning the back of it also symbolizes Miyu, who he failed to save.]]
** He gets two more throughout the course of the game: [[spoiler:Mi-ke's hair ribbon and Miyu's ruby ring]]. Later, [[spoiler:his farewell letter to his family asks them to keep them safe in his stead]].
* ZeroApprovalGambit: Pulls one of these in Chapter 3, [[spoiler:playing up his real talent and the perceptions that would ensue in a bid to force the vote onto him as opposed to Miyu. Sadly, [[AllForNothing it doesn't pay off]] in the end.]]

!! Shino Shirashi
!!! SHSL Voice Actor
[[quoteright:202:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_21_t.png]]
[[caption-width-right:202:Acting is the art of speaking in a loud, clear voice and the avoidance of bumping into the furniture.]]
Previously well known for voicing beloved characters in children’s shows, Shino is now climbing the ranks within bigger, and fairly different, demographics! Taking on major roles in genres like romance, comedy, slice of life, and magical girl that usually become hits by the end of the season. He’s conveyed true, genuine emotion through his characters that really connected them with the audiences. It was because of that, he was noticed and gained his title.

* CoolShades: An obfuscating pair.
* NiceGuy: Very polite.
%%* OfficialCouple: As of Chapter 4, [[spoiler:with Holy]]

!! Shinobu Tenpō
!!! SHSL Alpinist
[[quoteright:217:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_22_4.png]]
[[caption-width-right:217:It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.]]
Shinobu Tenpō is a name most anyone would recognize. Known for her fantastic acting career, which ranges from comedic side characters in sitcoms to her role as the titular character of the Sakura Han series, she’s adored across Japan by fans and critics alike. It wasn’t until the past year that her assured future as the Super High School Level Actress was thrown into uncertainty when she disappeared from the set of the seventh Sakura Han installment, only to reappear in a remote hospital in Pakistan months later. Soon after, Shinobu was announced to be accepted to Hope’s Peak Academy as the Super High School Level Alpinist, though the reason for the change — as well as her sudden presence in Pakistan — has yet to be publicly addressed by Hope’s Peak or the Tenpō family.

[[spoiler:She is the victim of Chapter 2; her murderer is revealed two chapters later to be Mitsuo.]]

* HotBlooded: Very outgoing.
* HugeSchoolgirl: 6'1". For comparison, three of her female classmates tie for second at just ''5'7"'' -- still quite tall, just not in comparison to her or Takako.

[[folder:Genbu]]
Devouring information like none other, Clan Genbu remains ever so gluttonous in their thirst for knowledge. While immortality has been long-sought secret for the ages, it’s believed that the Black Turtle had uncovered its method and can be found roaming the earth to this day. Collecting tales from all around, he’s left a library in his wake for those who strive to learn. However, for all the intellect one may hold, it means nothing if it cannot be tailored to one’s life. Wisely adapting and making use of one’s resources is what makes a Genbu. Whether it be tools for others’ use or art to be admired for the ages, craftsmanship is encouraged within this clan. Taking advantage of what they’ve learned, graduates have been known for honing their trades, making contributions to the world with their desire for their works to leave a mark on history. People in this clan tend to be pragmatic, favoring flexibility and logic above all else. All the more to make preparations for the future.

!! Hikaru Hanabashi
!!! SHSL Tarot Card Reader
[[quoteright:222:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_8_t.png]]
[[caption-width-right:222:The cards, the cards, the cards will tell.]]
Hikaru Hanabashi is a rather well known face in the city of Nagoya. While still a teenager Hikaru has gathered a rather impressive following for someone doing something such as tarot card readings. His fortunes have a pretty good track record of being fairly useful for people. But the main draw on his popularity outside of Nagoya comes from appearances on variety shows, it is often treated as a bizzairty but the interest something such as fortune telling gets cannot be ignored so easily. Even with that boost though he keeps up his work, striving to use Tarot to help people as best he can.

* TarotMotifs: Deals in these.

!! HOLY
!!! SHSL Controllerism Artist
[[quoteright:193:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_9_t.png]]
[[caption-width-right:193:My music will tell you more about me than I ever will.]]
A youth that entered the controllerism scene just two years ago, HOLY has amassed both fame and fortune alike in no time flat. Already, his follower count is approaching 10 million, and with his acceptance into Hope’s Peak, it’s only expected to skyrocket. But why is this kid so popular? If you ask him, he’ll say he hasn’t got even a bit of a clue, but anyone else will tell you it’s due to the versatility of his music. He has manage to create something for everyone, according to his fanbase. He’s got electropop, he’s got dance music, he’s got EDM. Covers, remixes, originals; you name it, he’s made it. It’s not just his flexibility in regards to genres that’s garnered so much attention, though. His mysterious aura has drawn many a curious eye, making him a sort of cryptid to both music lovers and passers-by alike.

* BelatedInjuryRealization: Has been so wrapped up in events around him before that he's not even realized he himself is injured. One of the best examples of this would be a labyrinth run with Mitsuo - HOLY had been so caught up in trying to make up for his mistakes earlier on that he didn't even notice he'd been ''stabbed in the side.''
* ColorCodedCharacters: Purple. There's a whole lot of purple incorporated into his clothing. He's even got purple eyes. Funnily enough, Genbu's clan colors just so happen to be purple and black.
* CosmicPlaything: He's got far from the best luck in the cast. He's had his nose broken, he's been knocked out on two separate occasions (one of which was thanks to getting hit by ''celery sticks''), he's been set on fire, he's gotten a minion puppet stuck to his hand for far too long... and this is all ''outside'' of the labyrinth.
* DroppingTheBombshell: In [[spoiler:the Chapter 3 trial]].
--> '''HOLY:''' [[spoiler:... What sort of spells does the Super High School Level Hitman have?]]
* ExhaustedEyeBags: Has these after Chapter Two's motive release.
* FromDressToDressing: Pulls this fairly often inside the labyrinth.
* GentleGiant: At 5'11, he's among the tallest students in the class. While his neutral expression can look pretty intimidating, he himself is surprisingly soft.
* KitschCollection: Technically speaking. He's been proven to collect socks.
* TheKlutz: Unintentionally so. Bad roll after bad roll has given him a reputation for being ''very'' clumsy.
* MessyHair
* OnlyOneName
* OddFriendship: With Mitsuo - if it can even be called a friendship. The fact they're not on horrible terms after Mitsuo decked Holy in the nose and subsequently broke it is surprising in and of itself.
* OfficialCouple: As of Chapter 4, [[spoiler:with Shino]]
* PrecisionFStrike: Sends one to [[spoiler:Kris Tenshi]], one of the three suspects of [[spoiler:the Chapter 3 trial]].
* TheQuietOne: Not the most extroverted person in the class.
* ReclusiveArtist: There's next to no information about his personal life that's been released, and he's known to obscure his face when on camera or performing.

!! Joon-Young Myung
!!! SHSL Supermodel
[[quoteright:197:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_10_t.png]]
[[caption-width-right:197:Keep your heels, head, and standards high]]
Myung Joon-young has come a long way from Gwangju. Beginning his modelling career at age 13, Joon-young quickly rose to supermodel fame thanks to his unmatched beauty and poise. His appealing personality has flown him around the world and landed him a seat in numerous reality TV shows. He captured international attention when he used his platform to advocate for various social issues in South Korea, a risky move that ended up tipping in his favour. If you haven’t heard of Myung Joon-young, well, where have you been?

[[spoiler:He is the one who murders Airi in Chapter 4. However, the class mistrials, and his life is spared; he reveals that he was the culprit shortly after the trial ends.]]

[[spoiler:Ironically enough, he perishes shortly after as one of three victims in Chapter 5.]]

* [[spoiler:LaserGuidedKarma: After murdering Airi in Chapter 4 he falls victim to being murdered in Chapter 5.]]
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler:With Mitsuo]]
* RedIsHeroic: His colourscheme incorporates a lot of red, including a rainbow Gucci tiger sweater.
** [[spoiler:Subverted as of Chapter 4.]]

!! Miyu Suzuki
!!! SHSL Oil Painter
[[quoteright:210:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_7_t.png]]
[[caption-width-right:210:Art speaks where words are unable to explain.]]
The Kyushu-born Suzukis, who claim to be related to the old Suzuki Conglomerate, have built their own fortunes upon furniture businesses and art sales. The current heiress is Miyu Suzuki, eldest child of the head of the family. Despite this, for most of her life Miyu refused to let the media know too many details about her career aspirations or her personal life, leaving rumors to fill her absence. One year ago she suddenly appeared in the art community, unheard of as a painter until her work was anonymously featured in her aunt’s gallery. It was the fame of Akahana Suzuki, former SHSL Museum Curator, that had drawn in crowds for the exhibition of teenage artists.

After several wealthy clients took an interest in the anonymous artist who had painted in the style of Western Impressionism, a brief journalist investigation led right to Miyu. Like it or not, she had earned the attention she wished to avoid. Her rapid success has not been without controversy: Because of her family’s numerous connections, Miyu has been accused of benefiting from nepotism, especially after rumors spread that Hope’s Peak had their eye on her. Worse still, the Suzukis have been recently disgraced by a scandal that ended with her father’s imprisonment. Distrustful of the gossipping media, Miyu has gone back to her original behavior of sheltering herself away from the public eye. This hasn’t stopped her from accepting the invite from the academy, however.

[[spoiler:She is the "victim" of Chapter 1, but is later discovered to have barely survived her injuries. She later murders Mio in Chapter 3. During the trial she's outed as the SHSL Art Forger, before being executed.]]

* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Played for laughs while she and Kris are [[SnarkToSnarkCombat teasing each other]]; turns out that a certain chain of misunderstandings has made its way to her, letting her say just four words to completely mortify him:
--> '''Miyu:''' [[spoiler:Tenshi-san, what's a fursona?]]
* ArtAttacker: As revealed during the dance event, her personalized minor spell allows her to shoot oil paint at a target.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Averted after [[spoiler:her near-death experience]], after which Miyu has severe facial bruising that lasts for several weeks. She also has various bruises on her limbs from accidents in the dungeon.
* BreakTheHaughty: Chapter 3 gradually piles this onto her, but the first major break is [[spoiler:having several people discover her true talent, then learning that Hope's Peak considered ''putting a hit out on her father'']]. Later, [[spoiler:the stress of the motive wears her down until she kills Mio, and she earns the hatred of almost the entire class after she [[WoundedGazelleGambit preys on their sympathies]] and nearly causes a mistrial.]] By the end of the chapter, [[spoiler:she breaks down weeping, realizing that she is about to die without having accomplished anything in her life]]. Things continue to get much, much worse in subsequent chapters.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath:
** In the Labyrinth: [[spoiler:Strangled by a mob of oni, [[HalfTheWomanSheUsedToBe cut in half when her painting is slashed by a palette knife]], crushed under a giant's foot, bludgeoned by her own mace after breaking a rule, and [[ExplosiveLeash decapitated by an exploding collar]].]] Most of these happen in back-to-back runs, leaving her with rather... ''unhealthy'' attitudes towards the Labyrinth.
** [[spoiler:Her execution ends with her being pincushioned by numerous arrows, being conscious of it all until the final arrow gets her [[MoeGreeneSpecial through the eye and head]].]]
* CutenessProximity: As aloof as she can be, Miyu does have a soft spot for birds, especially parrots, and will go out of her way to pet them.
* DeadpanSnarker: She finds it easier to express her emotions, positive and [[StepfordSnarker negative]], with a dash of sharp wit.
* DefrostingIceQueen: A platonic version, in which over time Miyu finds it easier to express her emotions around others and even starts trusting them enough to call them friends. There are some setbacks, though, especially after [[spoiler:Miyu kills Mio and betrays everyone by trying to force a mistrial]].
* DontYouDarePityMe: Miyu starts feeling this after the events of Chapter 1 leave her bedridden, and she tends to go out of her way to "prove" she can take care of herself. She does occasionally give a pass -- ''if'' she thinks she can exploit sympathy to her advantage.
* FamilyOfChoice: Her relationships with her blood relatives are awkward at best and estranged at worst, to the point where she barely even connects with her brother thanks to their age gap and her being their grandmother's [[TheUnfavorite unfavorite]]. After Mi-ke and Kris start treating Miyu like an older sister, however, she takes the role seriously and begins calling them her siblings.
* FamilyThemeNaming: Her father and his siblings have names that include the [[ColorfulThemeNaming primary colors]]: Kintaro (technically gold, but loosely linked to yellow), Aoshi (blue), and Akahana (red).
* FlowerMotif: She's associated with various kinds of lilies, especially water lilies, [[YuriGenre white lilies]], and [[OldMoney tiger lilies]]. Her association with water lilies comes from Claude Monet's ''Les Nymphéas'' series of around ''250'' paintings. [[spoiler:Miyu managed to make several forgeries in the style of this series and pass them off as genuine Monet pieces.]]
* [[spoiler:FullBodyDisguise]]: Her personalized major spell. [[spoiler:She can use an illusion to appear as another person, but only if they're the same height as her. She utilizes this during Chapter 3 to throw suspicion towards Clove and Byakko in general.]]
** She earns an advanced version of this without the [[spoiler:height restriction]] as a prize from the fashion show event.
* GracefulLadiesLikePurple / TrueBlueFemininity: Some of her outfits fall into one or both of these, usually for the connotations of nobility. She's also comfortable wearing the purple uniform of Genbu.
* HimeCut: During Chapter 5, she's given a "royalty wear" makeover that lengthens her hair to this style. The hairstyle is appropriate even out of costume thanks to her wealthy background.
* {{Hypocrite}}: It's pointed out many times that Miyu isn't in any position to call people out for their actions, when she herself is a known troublemaker, a frequent source of trial-related strife, and [[spoiler:a murderer who frequently defends someone with over eighty kills]].
** HypocriticalHumor: Throughout Chapter 2's dance event, she calls out several of her opponents for unsporting behavior. This ignores that she's laughed at their misfortunes, destroyed their outfits with paint, overreacted to minor injuries in an attempt to bait pity, and kicked Airi hard enough to make her ''bleed''.
* IcyGrayEyes: Her gray eyes reflect her guarded, somewhat distant behavior.
* IgnoreTheFanservice: While none of them are intentionally trying to seduce her, Miyu keeps finding herself in the company of male classmates who, [[ItMakesSenseInContext for various reasons]], end up shirtless -- including literal supermodel Joon-young. She reacts coolly to all of this due to having [[LipstickLesbian no interest whatsoever]].
* ImportantHaircut: Inverted: The event in Chapter 5 magically lengthens her hair to waist-level. This takes place between several incidents that force her to reevaluate the nature of mortality, both hers and other's.
* LonelyRichKid: Feels this thanks to fair-weather friends and parents with busy work schedules. However, it's clear that most of her loneliness (especially in the game itself) is self-inflicted thanks to her own behavior.
* MultigenerationalHousehold: Miyu's paternal grandmother lives in the same home as her.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Her surname, as well as her grandfather's given name, is a reference to Suzuki Harunobu, an Ukiyo-e artist who invented multicolor woodblock printing. [[spoiler:An artist named Shiba Kōkan produced forgeries under Suzuki's name; Miyu's codename in her work was Shiba.]]
* NotSoAboveItAll: Miyu ''tries'' to project an aura of refinement, even in the face of her classmates' antics. But she isn't completely immune to getting drawn in, as seen in HypocriticalHumor, and sometimes she's the instigator of these shenanigans.
* OddFriendship: With Takako (they work frighteningly well together and feed into each other's competitiveness by mocking anyone that opposes them), Kris (they bicker even when checking in on each other's health and [[spoiler:find common ground in their criminal talents]]), and Mi-ke (despite their earlier interactions, they bond over promises to [[spoiler:safeguard talent-related information]].
** After Chapter 5, [[spoiler:the friendship with Takako implodes due to how she treats Mi-ke and Kris]].
* OldMoney: Wealth has been in her family for several generations.
* PrecisionFStrike: Sends one to [[spoiler:Shinobu Kanamori]], one of the remaining suspects, in the aftermath of [[spoiler:the Chapter 2 mistrial]]. She gets much looser with the word afterwards.
* ReclusiveArtist: Miyu has made few appearances in the art world and is best known for submitting her artwork anonymously to her aunt's gallery. She also dislikes having too much public attention on any aspect of her life and is known to refuse any inquiries that get too personal.
* ReportsOfMyDeathWereGreatlyExaggerated: [[spoiler:Miyu is thought to have died of blood loss, which puts into motion an investigation. It isn't until Itona tries to compare a knife to her wounds by ''sticking it in said wounds'' that she whimpers, revealing that she's alive but unresponsive from severe shock.]]
* SnarkToSnarkCombat: With Kris, especially after she starts considering him a friend.
* TheyreCalledPersonalIssuesForAReason: A firm believer in this. However, she takes it to such extremes that it causes tremendous strain to her friendships when she refuses to communicate serious problems.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Downplayed: It's sour and salty flavors in general that she likes, and she'll eat a variety of different foods. However, several of her scenes have her focusing specifically on umeboshi, mainly because she keeps losing out on a meal for one reason or another.
* TsurimeEyes: In some artwork, befitting of her prideful nature.
* WhenSheSmiles: A variant where she often has polite, snarky, or outright faked smiles, but rarely has a warm and unrestrained smile. Kris points this out when he sees how happy she is to pet an owl.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: During Chapter 3, [[spoiler:she pretends that Kris blackmailed and threatened her, forcing her to help with Mio's murder; he ''[[ZeroApprovalGambit supports]]'' this plan. It still fails to save her from execution.]]

!! Outa Akiyama
!!! SHSL Pianist
[[quoteright:213:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_11.png]]
[[caption-width-right:213:Nine lives added to my one makes a perfect ten.]]
Does Outa Akiyama live for music, or does music exist for him to perform it? Whatever the answer, Outa’s musical ability is world renowned. From a young age the musical prodigy was performing and writing his own music alongside learning how to read and write words. During his younger years Outa performed many recitals and participated in contests, earning him an impressive collection of awards and plenty of recognition. Now at the age of 17, he is more known for his musical arrangements, including his masterpiece titled ‘Nine Lives’- an arrangement separated into nine different parts. It is no surprise to anyone that Outa would be granted the title of SHSL Pianist, an honor he was more than delighted to accept.

* ChildProdigy: As per his bio, he was reading and writing his own music from an early age.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Giving him a look much like a fox.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler:With Morgan, one of the NPC ghosts]]

!! Reiko Eigawa
!!! SHSL Cold Case Detective
[[quoteright:211:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/icon_12_t.png]]
[[caption-width-right:211:When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.]]
Searching the name ‘Reiko Eigawa’ brings up several news articles and reports from the NPA and local Osaka news regarding a young girl who had helped to bring a serial kidnapper/murderer to justice. After being targeted herself by the villain, she was miraculously rescued unharmed and has gone on to solve upwards of 15 cold cases thought to be lost-causes. She has aided police in finding the true culprits of these crimes. Being the daughter of the Osaka Police Chief, Soichiro Eigawa, she is known for her wit and logical approach to cases.

Eigawa has famously claimed to view every homicide like a puzzle. This fact plus her age has called into question her credibility, but she continues to prove herself a capable (if not prideful) detective. She has also publicly bashed the Osaka Police Force’s investigative team for their ‘cowardly’ and ‘ineffective’ approach to their big serial kidnapping case, which has also raised some eyebrows.

* AnimalMotif: Wears hairclips in the shape of white and green butterflies as well as a similarly-patterned bolo tie. At certain times of the year, she keeps nurseries of them.
* [[spoiler: BreakTheHaughty:]]In late game, both the narration and the Reiko herself comments on this in response to the heavy environment [[spoiler:and that she's only been right about killers when they were or involved the people closest to her.]]
* [[spoiler: BrokenBird: ]] A [[StandardCopBackstory common archetype among detective characters,]] Reiko's abrasive and arrogant attitude can be considered the effect of becoming heavily involved in a gruesome serial killer case at a young age. Being a 'child detective prodigy' isn't as glorious as anime, books, and video games will have you believe.
* BrutalHonesty: She rarely holds back her opinions on matters and appears to lack a filter at times.
* ChildProdigy: Solved upwards of 15 cold cases at a young age.
* CommonalityConnection: Notably shared between her and Clove as two investigative talents and lesbians as well as her and Kris regarding the fact that both come from Osaka [[spoiler:and they also share several parallels in their backstories.]]
* GreatDetective: As implied in her SHSL title.
* IceQueen: At game start she tended to be emotionally detached from her classmates, often acting coldly and viewing the others as beneath her.[[spoiler: Following the events of the second trial and onwards, [[DefrostingIceQueen her stance has notably swayed.]] ]]
* IntergenerationalFriendship: She has a friend back home who is roughly 15 years older than her.
* InsufferableGenius: She takes great pride in her success as a detective and enjoys seeing other people squirm under pressure.
* NervesOfSteel: With homicides being her talent's area of focus, Reiko showed little to no signs of squeamishness when presented with murdered classmates and their executions.
* OfficialCouple: As of Chapter 4, [[spoiler:with Clove]]
* SnarkToSnarkCombat: Engages in this behavior in several threads - especially during her introduction, class trials, and when she doesn't agree with someone - which is often. [[spoiler:This comes out the most when she's interrogating someone she believes to be a murderer.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:[[spoiler: Specifically given to Kris during Trial Three after she gets him to reveal the wounds on his hands.]]
* TsurimeEyes: Her green eyes are usually described in this manner, and typically are drawn like this in art references.

!! [=NPCs=]

[[folder:Guides]]

Three individuals who are tasked with supervising the students' stay at Mahoutokoro.

!! Yukie Amemori-Kozlova
!!! ex-SHSL Cryobiologist, tour guide
Standing squarely at the intersection between physics and biology, the name Yukie Amemori-Kozlova is associated with cutting-edge scientific discovery in her field of choice. No stranger to snowy wastes even as a child, she made her debut publishing papers on the benefits and drawbacks of cryonic preservation as a method to preserve organs. What began as a simple independent research project eventually saw her as a member of Samui, a research firm specifically focusing their efforts on the applications of science to the medicinal field. Here, her next groundbreaking achievement was a published paper on the possibility of providing a more effective cure for hypothermia. And while her line of work was mostly relevant to nobody under the age of thirty, it caught a reporter’s eye who made a story out of the teenage sensation, catching even more attention, an invite from Hope’s Peak, and later a successful graduation to much applause. Now with increased focus on this field and its applications, the world (or maybe only the scientific community) are on the edges of their seats waiting to see where this young pioneer treads next.

…Now, it seems, she’s your supervisor.

* CoverInnocentEyesAndEars: When Mio says "ass" in front of Zoya, Yukie immediately appears on the scene to cover her ears and reprimand Mio for swearing in front of a child.
* EyeColorChange / SupernaturalGoldEyes: [[spoiler:On occasion, her eyes flash yellow; it's currently unclear ''exactly'' what's happening to her, but it rarely accompanies good news.]]
* DeanBitterman: Only a trip supervisor but embodies this trope.
* IceQueen: In a literal and metaphorical sense.
* StatuesqueStunner: 6'3" with heels and described as pretty.

!! Zoya Amemori-Kozlova
!!! Tour Guide
Your other guide. While Zoya holds no prestige in the world of ''mahounashi'' like her older sister, this sharp-tongued girl has made a name for herself in Mahoutokoro. Being the first to successfully make technology work in a magic-filled community, she's made leaps and bounds with her tendency to fuse magic and science together. Though, it's rumored that her original intentions of doing as such was to set up a wifi hotspot at the school in order to keep up with her social media accounts.

* DeadpanSnarker: Very much so.
* HugeSchoolgirl: At 6'3", she's taller than all of the Hope's Peak students, most of whom are 3-5 years her senior. She's even taller than the two adult supervisors.
* NotSoStoic: Breaks down after the mutual killing commencement announcement.
* OnlySaneMan: Plays this role to the class, especially during murder investigations due to their tendency to want to touch, sniff, or even taste highly suspect materials. Zoya can often be seen lurking around, judging people for their foolishness and banning them from investigating certain areas if they ignore her warnings. Even outside of investigations, she often has to clean up after the wreckage of anything they break.

!! Seiji Ohara
!!! Hapless Teacher
Your... other, other guide! A son of the Oharas, a prominent wizarding family, he graduated from Suzaku with top marks and became one of the youngest teachers at Mahoutokoro - being a professor of the History of Magic, while also becoming involved in wizarding espionage cases on the side. While he has settled down, his curious nature and boisterous tongue remain. [[spoiler: Dies at the end of Prologue.]]

* BlackSheep: While many Oharas were mentioned to be successful and famous, he, well, wasn't.
* HeroicWannabe: Apparently wanted to pioneer the bridge between the wizarding world and the ''mahounashi.'' [[spoiler: Too bad his life was cut short.]]
* WellDoneSonGuy: Mentioned to have wanted to win the approval of his family.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kamaitachi Trio]]

The proprietors of the item distribution system. For the low price of one hansatsu, they can summon one item for their customer. Given the gachapon-esque mechanics, however, there's no guarantee that the item is wanted or even worth the price...

!! Izumi
!!! Salve Kamaitachi
The eldest of the three kamaitachi, wielding the healing salve. They are stern and serious, and do their best to keep the other two in line. It's something of an uphill battle, but nobody is more stubborn than they are.

* TheLeader: Seems to take this role for the other two Kamaitachi, as their elder. How well it works is questionable.
* MysticalWhiteHair: White fur, but they are a magical weasel.
* TheQuietOne: More reserved, as compared to their companions.

!! Yutaka
!!! Club Kamaitachi
The middle kit of the three kamaitachi, wielding the club. They act like a delinquent, and are, but somewhere deep, deep down they have a heart of gold. You'd just have to look very hard for it. The most likely to start a fight if someone else insults the trio.

* [[TheBigGuy The Big Weasel:]] Acts as the muscle of the trio.
* HotBlooded: The most likely to start a fight.
* JapaneseDelinquents: Embodies many of these stereotypes, at least as many as a weasel can.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: They have one... deep, deep down.

!! Sayuri
!!! Sickle Kamaitachi
The youngest of the three kamaitachi, wielding the sickle. Don't be fooled by their accent and tendency to talk in circles, they're at least slightly more intelligent than they seem. They're surprisingly artistic and enjoy drawing in their free time. The most likely of the trio to cry over their own creations.

* [[TheSmartGuy The Smart Weasel:]] They're more intelligent than they seem.
* TrueArtIsAngsty: They're artistic, and cry over their own creations.

[[folder:Clan Spirits]]

These patron spirits of the clans reside within the school's walls, occasionally interacting with the students.

!! Kunie
!!! Seiryuu Clan Ghost
'''Very''' shady Clan ghost of Seiryuu, who's always where you don't want them to be. With a propensity for trouble and a cattish smile on their face, this tengu seems to know a fair bit about what's going on... if only they'd tell.

* BirdPeople: A tengu ghost, they have human and avian features.
* LargeHam: They're quite bombastic and dramatic.
* LovesSecrecy: As per their bio, they like hiding things from others, it seems.
* SmugSnake: Described as self-important.

!! Sana Ri
!!! Suzaku Clan Ghost
Equal turns dramatic and calculating, the ghostly fox that is Suzaku clan's resident spirit seems mostly content to keep to herself and stare down anyone who crosses her path. Something warns you you'd better not question her too much...

* CunningLikeAFox: She's a fox spirit.
* HairTriggerTemper: Doesn't have patience for incompetence.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: As abrasive as she is, she genuinely does seem to care about the Suzaku students.
* LadyInRed: Is depicted in a red kimono.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: More abrasive than anything, but she has vivid red eyes.

!! Tama
!!! Byakko Clan Yokai
Able to stand on his hind legs for long periods of time, this sensitive bakeneko serves as the Clan Yokai for Byakko. After exiting for centries, he's been spoiled on pets and can be quite picky about them.

* CuteKitten: Paw-sitively adorable!
* HurricaneOfPuns: Makes fur-requent cat paw-ns in his dialogue.
* MegaNeko: Cat-sized, but he's still a sentient cat.
* SeriousBusiness: Getting pets. A good pet is often needed to encourage him to help with a task. A ''bad'' pet sends him into loud crying.
