Go To

Not quite as strong as Gnomes, but pretty close, and a bit faster to boot. They're very tough and can tank a surprisingly large amount of trauma without going down, though they'll die like anyone else if they're hit with enough firepower. Salamanders have a natural affinity for fire magic and a degree of resistance to flames and heat, even their body temperature is on average a couple degrees higher than a human. The trade off is that they absolutely HATE the cold.

* BadassArmy: They are the most militant themed race, and have the most organized army.
* PlayingWithFire: Their racial affinity revolves around Fire based magic.

!!Mortimer (Fujioka Katsuo)
!!!Lord of the Salamanders, Count of Gaddan
The brilliant strategist and leader of the Salamander faction. A reserved man who prefers to fight with his mind over direct combat, he is an exceptional mage despite his relatively low stats. Only shows open affection when around his younger and more athletic brother. Like Sakuya, he is a student of history, but more narrowly focused on military matters. He becomes the main architect of operation Dunkirk alongside the retired General Gramont.
* AwesomeByAnalysis: Deduces Sakuya and Shirishi's location by studying the maps of Tristaina's underground.
* BecomingTheMask: According to Vakarian, who knew him outside of ALO, he was ''[[AvertedTrope exactly]]'' the same there as he is now in Halkegenia.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Alicia calls him Mort-kun.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Implied by having Delaroache's version of ''Napoleon crossing the Alps'' above the door to his office constantly facing him. It's later subverted, he just likes Delaroache. [[spoiler:Although WordOfGod is that Delaroache's version is meant as a sort of memento mori.]]
* INeedAFreakingDrink: His reaction to learning [[spoiler:that Eugene is the father of Morgaina's child.]] This is in spite of him usually being TheTeetotaler.
* MarsAndVenusGenderContrast: Lydia, who is a firm MyMasterRightOrWrong kind of person, tells him that he was being a complete and total jerk to Sakuya as a woman by betraying her trust in regards to Rip Jack. According to him, his inability to talk to women properly is the reason he's still not married.
* MoreDakka: He has an artillery mage build, which is amply demonstrated in Newcastle.
* OCStandIn: In [=SAO=] canon, he has even less personality and screen time than his brother. What is present here is the author's creation.
* ProperlyParanoid: [[spoiler:His hidden cane blade comes in handy during the assassination attempt]]. Not even the leader of his personal guard knew about it.
* ShipTease: He has BelligerentSexualTension [[spoiler:with Sakuya]] and worked through fatigue and injury to lead her rescue party.
* WhatTheHellHero: His insistence on being the pragmatic {{Realpolitik}} ruler gets him chewed out by Sakuya, who tells him that his method for dealing with Rio [[SillyRabbitCynicismIsForLosers is needlessly oppressive and will only prove Rio correct]].
* TheTeetotaler: There are implications of him being a recovering alcoholic IRL.
* UnfitForGreatness: As the second arc shows, he is a capable general and strategist who brilliantly executed Operation Dunkirk. But he is also a horribly inept politician [[spoiler:who makes the Rip Jack situation ten times worse with unnecessary secrecy.]]

!!Eugene (Fujioka Tarou)
!!!General Eugene, The Dragon of Gaddan, [[spoiler:Sir Eugene Tarou Fujioka of the Order of Yggdrasil]]
A fearless warrior and field Commander, General Eugene is among the strongest fighters of the Faerie forces. He maintains friendly rivalries with Kirito, whom he views as his superior in pure swordsmanship, and with Morgiana who nearly defeated him in battle prior to his acquisition of Gram. Generally gruff, he is only openly affectionate around his brother. [[spoiler:He is also the father of Morgainna's child. The product of a night of GladToBeAliveSex following Operation Dunkrik.]]
* BloodKnight: He wants a rematch with Kirito, not because the first duel wounded his ego, but because it was the most fun he's had in ages. His brother had to veto it.
* CursedWithAwesome: He is the strongest warrior of the Salamanders who had the most Pks before the Transition. As a result, he has a giant half-naked bronze statue of himself that was featured in the game as a monthly trophy for the Salamander's MVP, and now permanently immortalizes him in the city of Gaddan. He is absolutely embarrassed by this, but Mortimer won't let him take it down due to it aiding people's morale.
* EatingTheEyeCandy: Karin notes how his eyes tend to follow [[ShamelessFanserviceGirl Morgiana]] around.
* TheLeader: In battle he's the Headstrong type. Shortly after the Transition, some of his soldiers tried to desert when fighting an area boss. He told them that if they run away he'll kill them himself.
* MasterSwordsman: Had been generally considered the finest blade in Alfheim before his defeat at the hands of Kirito. He's still indisputably in the top five.
* OCStandIn: Since he only has one scene in canon, there is much room to fill in his characterization.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: He manages to kill two dragons singlehandedly in the battle of York, but it's hard to spot between Morgiana and Karin kicking ass.
%%%* TheStoic

!!Enya
!!!The Crimson Witch
A salamander mage and a member of Klein's squad. Fiery tempered and impatient with useless people, i.e. strangers, adults, children, teachers, authority figures, television personalities, etc. She was a cryptography enthusiast in the real world and seeks to crack the basis of [=ALFheim=] magic in the world of Halkegenia. After Operation Dunkirk, she becomes a pupil to Colbert. Seems to be harboring feelings for Klein. She is investigating the possibility of Louise's involvement in The Transition under orders from Lord Mortimer.
* TheAtoner: Her drive to deconstruct the Fae magic system is based in making her fire magic do something constructive to atone for the lives she took at Newcastle.
* BirdsOfAFeather: She quickly bonds with Colbert, a fellow academic atoner who wields flame magic.
* CannotSpitItOut: Right before Operation Dunkirk, she was about to tell Klein something that provoked a LuminescentBlush, but she hesitated just long enough for Mortimer's RousingSpeech to interrupt her.
* CunningLinguist: She likes languages and is good enough with them to comparatively use the mysterious Fae magic language, Japanese and the written script used in Tristain.
* LadySwearsALot: Her rough manner includes a lot of swear words. Colbert found her in Arrun's huge library because he followed the trail of profanity.
* MeaningfulName: Her name has double meaning, as it is a Gaelic name meaning Kernel, a reference to software Kernels and Enya's effort to decipher the link between Fae magic and Cardinal. Enya can also mean 'little flame' and is a reference to her student/teacher relationship with Colbert.
* ShellShockedVeteran: She has flashbacks to the siege of Newcastle.
* SufficientlyAnalyzedMagic: She devotes herself to taking apart the Fae magic system.

!!Kindjal

!!Klein (Tsuboi Ryotaro)
!!![[spoiler:Sir Klein Ryotaro Tsuboi, Chevalier of Tristain, Knight of the Order Yggdrasil]]
Former Furinkanzen Guild Leader, currently a Lieutenant Squad Commander of the Salamander race. A skilled swordsman and good friend of Kirito. In SAO he was known for his ability to remain calm in even the toughest situations, and was respected by even the larger guilds for never losing a party member despite many hard-fought battles. Logged into ALO to help with the <<Asuna Rescue Mission>>. Develops a friendship with Leafa, whom he feels he has responsibility to protect on Kirito's behalf.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He's trying ''really'' hard to focus on "protective elder brother" feelings towards Leafa so she isn't bothered by guys that (unlike him) don't care that she's Kirito's sister; Kirto's ''younger'' sister.
* DishingOutDirt: Klein has supplemented his magic arsenal with some amount of Earth Magic, as demonstrated when he kills a Sword Crab using Earth Nail.
* FaceOfAThug: Louise thinks that his "uncouth face" is the mark of a commoner mercenary.
* ImGoingToHellForThis: Invoked when he admits that Leafa's mature looks and confident attitude make her incredibly attractive, despite knowing that [[RunningGag she's Kirito's sister. Kirito's kid sister.]]
* NiceGuy: When a kid hits him with a horseshoe, it is apparent that the typical punishment for this in Halkegenia is public humiliation. He just makes the kid apologize and say he won't do it again, surprising Louise.
* RunningGag: Remember Klein, Leafa is ''"his"'' sister. His ''kid'' sister.
* ShipTease: With Kirche and Leafa. The omakes have paired him with even more girls. Essentially making him the focus of all the harem hijinks the story otherwise ignores in the source materials.
* SpitTake: Averted when he saw a half-naked Kofu, but only because he wasn't drinking beer at that exact moment.
* ThinkUnsexyThoughts: Whenever he notices how attractive Leafa is, or how mature she ''looks'', he thinks "damn it!" and immediately thinks about something else.
* UnluckyEverydude: Has poor luck trying to find a girlfriend, due to a combination of his own moral standards, lack of ability to deal with women, and his choosing to edit his Faerie appearance to resemble his more average human looks before the Transition. It has become something of a RunningGag that every girl he meets is either too young, too dangerous, Kirito's sister, or a combination of these.
* WhatsUpKingDude: He walks up to the ''de facto'' monarch of the kingdom the Fae transported into and greets her with a "Oy, Princess Henrietta!".
* WouldNotHitAGirl: "A real man never hits a girl".

!!Kagemune
A Salamander Lancer Squad Commander and subordinate of General Eugene. Possesses a strong sense of sportsmanship and fair play.
* CowardlyLion: Resolves to [[YouShallNotPass hold off]] the Venus Man Eater so that Princess Henrietta can escape, despite being horrified after watching it kill at least one of his friends and [[NotQuiteDead apparently kill]] Eugene.

!!Carmond
A former JGSDF Infantry Sergeant discharged due to training injuries, now a Faerie of the Salamander race. Serves in the Fae defense forces and is a good friend of [=KoKo=]. Has a nephew and niece who were also logged into ALO, Bardiche and Balandene.

!!Vakarian
A police officer prior to the Transition, now a member of the Arrun city watch. He is assigned by Lord Mortimer to lead the official investigation into [[spoiler:Novair's Murder]].

!!Lydia
The commander of Mortimer's personal guard.
* BecomingTheMask: [[InvokedTrope She deliberately isolates]] the part of her that remembers being a [[PunyEarthling puny human]], who cannot dash through flames, fly upon her own wings or kill without hesitation. Her new life requires it.
* FragileSpeedster: In contrast to tanky Dio, she favors speed and dodging.
* GreenEyedMonster: While downplayed, it is still rather obvious that Lydia is jealous of Sakuya and Mortimer's closeness. However her loyalty keeps her from doing anything other than some dirty looks.
* HiddenDepths: Apprently is a good artist and has talent in clothing design, as she is the one who came up with the designs for the newly centralized Tristainian military's new uniforms.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Mortimer, as appropriate for the guy organizing his personal security.

!!Schmidt
A former commander of the Divine Dragon Alliance' defence squad back in Aincrad, and now a Lancer Squad Vice-commander. Jumped into ALO to take part in Asuna Rescue Mission and repay his debt to Kirito. Broad-shouldered and imposing, has a heavy tank build. Fought in Operation Dunkirk.

!!Takai
A self-defense instructor in Arrun Home and presumably also teaches other subjects. According to Bardiche, he has little patience for children.
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: A little bit towards Irene since he was more upset about the shower incident involving Saitou than Irene herself. He was a hair's width away from attacking the good doctor.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's rough mannered and a tad aggressive but it's clear he's concerned about the safety of his friends and Arrun Home.
