The protagonist. Kensuke is an OrdinaryHighschoolStudent who has had the ability to see ghosts ever since he was a kid. Because of this, he always felt different, but things changed after meeting Kagura.
----
* AccidentalPervert: He has typical erotic accidents more than once, such as unintentionally seeing her naked or groping her breasts.
* AffectionateNickname: Ken-chan, from Kagura.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Kensuke's parents run a kendo dojo, and his boisterous father frequently goes on overseas trips to take advantage of foreign fascination with samurai. He considers them an embarrassment and remarks to Kagura that it's better they don't come home.
* BattleCouple: He and Kagura gradually fall in love as they fight evil spirits together.
* CoolShades: When fighting, he sometimes dons a pair of sunglasses.
* CovertPervert: He's constantly imagining ecchi situations with Kagura -- especially early on -- and low-key freaking out about them. The only reason he agreed to join the Supernatural Disaster Countermeasures Department in the first place was because a gust of wind gave him a look at her panties.
* DeclarationOfProtection: He swears he will protect Kagura several times.
* DemotedToSatelliteLoveInterest: He's TheHero and the main POV character through the first part of the manga. After he saves Kagura from the Kyuubi, Kensuke's role is significantly reduced as the focus is on Kagura and Yomi/Izumi and Kagura still has to remember him because she lost her memory. From that point on, Kensuke only acts as Kagura's love interest and protector.
* DisneyDeath: Setsuna kills him to get the Bane Stone out of his chest. Soon after, Kagura accepts to become the new host of the Kyuubi to resurrect Kensuke.
* EnergyAbsorption: As a guardian of the White Priestess, he has the power to absorb and purify spirtual energy.
* EyeColorChange: When he taps into the Bane Stone shard that Yomi gave him to attack Mitogawa, his sclera turn black and his pupils into vertical slits.
* FaceOfAThug: He's noted to sometimes have a scary appearance, causing a the ghost of a young girl who'd been following him and Kagura on their date to break down in tears.
* HeroesPreferSwords: His main weapon are swords.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: At the start of the series, anyways. He hated being able to see things no one else around him could see and felt like a freak. Meeting Kagura and other people with Spiritual power helped him finally feel normal.
* ISeeDeadPeople: He has the ability to see ghosts and spirits, something that has made it hard for him to live a normal life.
* MasterSwordsman: His father trained him extensively in kendo, and he continues to improve over the course of the series.
* ThePowerOfLove: Kensuke is capable of channelling his love for Kagura in order to in order to absorb miasma, and can channel it into the Michael Revolution to cut through dimensions... though doing so gives him a temporary bald spot.
* OrdinaryHighschoolStudent: He's a completely normal high school guy who just happens to be able to see spirits. When his powers put him in danger, he meets the exorcist girl Kagura who then introduces him to her world and lets him join her fight against evil spirits.
* {{Reincarnation}}: He is the reincarnation of Okama Zankuro's apprentice.
* ScarsAreForever: He gets a scar across his right eye.
* ShooTheDog: Done almost literally when he tells the {{tanuki}} TeamPet that he should return to the mountains now that Setsuna taking over the Juugondou will make things too dangerous. The tanuki still comes back to protect Kensuke.
* SoulPower: He's noted to be spiritually powerful enough to see ghosts, which are drawn to him. He resented this ever since he was a child and lashed out at them until meeting Kagura, who is able to exorcise them.
* SwordBeam: Using the Michael 12, he could channel his spiritual energy into it and fire a blast powerful enough to wound the Tengu.

The heroine of the story. Her spiritual beast is the Ga-Rei Byakuei (which she calls Shirou), an inugami who resembles a large white dragon.
----
* AbortedDeclarationOfLove: In one of the early chapters, she confesses to Kensuke that she likes him, only to chicken out and say that [[ManlyGay Iwahata]] is the one who likes him.
* TheAce: After she gets amnesia, she tries out various normal activities like cooking and sports and excels at all of them, garnering admiration from her classmates -- as before her amnesia she had been holding back to uphold the masquerade.
* ActionGirlfriend: Meeting her changes Kensuke's entire life and gets him involved in the world of exorcists.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her eyes are brown in the manga while the prequel anime made them blue.
* AmnesiacHero: After being freed from the Kyuubi, she has amnesia and slowly regains her memories.
* AmnesiacLover: After she's freed from the Kyuubi, Kagura loses her memories, which resets her relationship with Kensuke back to zero. She does remember him near the end of the manga and they become a couple.
* ApocalypseMaiden: As the host of the Kyuubi, she annihilates a sizable chunk of Tokyo and would have gone on to devastate all of Japan had she not been stopped.
* BattleCouple: She and Kensuke slowly form into an exorcist couple as they overcome battles together.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: When tapping into the full power of the Bane Stone, her sclera turn black with pupil-less irises; though she stops just before fully succumbing to its corruption and becoming an ''onryō'' like Yomi.
* BreakTheCutie: The prequel anime is a about a younger, timid Kagura being put through hell. Yomi, the person closest to her, becomes crippled for life because of Mitogawa's schemes and is accused of murdering her cousin. Kagura tries to believe in Yomi and be there for her, but is disheartened when Yomi admits having killed her cousin. Yomi then uses a Bane Stone to heal herself, but is corrupted by it. Kagura has to watch Yomi massacre their allies and her own father. Ultimately, Kagura kills Yomi to put an end to the tragedy, which clearly destroys poor Kagura inside.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Yomi's Cain. They were like sisters to each other and shared a very close bond until Mitogawa gave Yomi the Bane Stone that turned her evil. Yomi killed many exorcists and Kagura's father, leaving Kagura no choice but to kill Yomi. However, Yomi's corrupted soul still came back as an onryo and Kagura had to exorcise her with Kensuke's help. Despite everything, Kagura still loved Yomi and lamented they were never able to live happily as sisters.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She becomes easily jealous when other girls like Shizuru show interest in Kensuke.
* ClosetKey: For Izumi, who realizes she is a lesbian -- or at least bisexual -- after falling in love with Kagura.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Bits of it are shown in the manga, but the full extent of it is explored in the prequel anime.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: She doesn't like to eat century eggs. To make it worse, Yomi would cook them for dinner whenever Kagura lost to her in a videogame.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Kagura has both Yomi and Izumi express an attraction towards her -- the later mostly because she's the pseudo-reincarnation of the former.
* ExtremeOmnivore: She's the only one who dares to eat the insects Noriyuki cooks when the group is hiding.
* GamerChick: She aces all the games at the arcade and has a lot of videogames in her room. According to ''-Zero-'', Yomi was the one who got her into this hobby.
* GreenEyedEpiphany: Her jealousy over Shizuru trying to take Kensuke away from her makes her overly self-conscious over her feelings for him.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Despite knowing the value of protecting humans from evil spirits, Kagura deep down hated the occupation of the exorcists as she really saw no meaning in her and her allies constantly risking their lives for people they don't even know. That hatred became stronger after the tragedy with Yomi. What Kagura always wished for was a peaceful life where she and Yomi could be together as normal sisters.
* IdentityAmnesia: After the incident with the Kyuubi, Kagura wakes up from her coma with no memories of who she is except for her name.
* InnocentBlueEyes: She gets blue eyes in the prequel anime, showcasing her inexperience and the innocence she would lose after losing her father and Yomi.
* KillTheOnesYouLove: She was forced to kill her beloved sister figure Yomi after the latter was corrupted by a Bane Stone and went on a mass murder spree against the exorcists.
* LaserBlade: Later on, she gets an energy lance that she pulls out from Shiro's tail.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Yomi said that she could endure anything as long as she had Kagura by her side. Even after the death of her adoptive father, losing her inherence and being crippled for life, Yomi didn't cross the DespairEventHorizon until it seemed like Kagura would leave her for murdering Mei. After her soul was corrupted, it was Yomi's love for Kagura which let her retain a bit of her sanity.
* LostFoodGrievance: She gets angry at Shizuru for wasting dinner, even if that dinner was a bunch of insects.
* LoveMartyr: To Yomi after her return in the manga. Despite the evil things Yomi did while under the control of the Bane Stone and the fact Yomi is now an ApocalypseMaiden, Kagura does everything in her power to protect Yomi, being determined to not let her sister figure die all over again even if that means becoming an enemy of the Agency. Yomi herself believes she doesn't deserve Kagura's devotion after she has done nothing but hurt her.
* MercyKill: She had to kill Yomi after the latter was possessed by a Bane Stone and massacred many of their fellow exorcists.
* MsFanservice: No one in the manga has more nude scenes than Kagura.
* MyGreatestSecondChance: When acting as the host of the Kyuubi, Kagura subconsciously wishes for Yomi to return to life. Yomi then manifests as a SplitPersonality of a girl named Izumi Isoyama, but poses a great danger due to the miasma Yomi produces attracting monsters and Yomi is meant to become the Black Priestess who will destroy the world. Despite all this, Kagura is determined to not let Yomi's tragedy repeat itself and gives it her all to save Yomi's soul this time.
* NewTransferStudent: She shows up at Kensuke's class as a transfer student at the end of the first chapter.
* PluckyGirl: High-spirited and always ready to face evil spirits without fear.
* PowersDoTheFighting: She mainly relies on Shiro for battle.
* {{Protectorate}}: Kensuke's main motivation is to protect Kagura from anything. When Yomi is good, her greatest goal is also to protect Kagura from any danger, including herself.
* PseudoRomanticFriendship: ''Ga-Rei Zero'' reveals her relationship with Yomi was like this while the latter was still alive, with them bathing together and playing the Pocky game.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: When Setsuna Imawano mortally wounds Kensuke, Kagura releases the seal on her Bane Stone shard and willingly taps into its dark power in an attempt to obliterate her, nearly transforming into an ''onryō'' like Yomi had.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: As lecherously observed by Noriyuki, in the two years between ''Ga-Rei Zero'' and ''Ga-Rei'' Kagura went from being a young girl to a young woman; and as a result of ArtEvolution continued to become increasingly busty over the course of the series.
* ShipperOnDeck: She actively supported Yomi's engagement to Noriyuki and wanted to see them get along better.
* ShrinkingViolet: In the prequel anime, Kagura is quite timid and unsure of herself as a young teenager.
* SummonMagic: She has an ''inugami'' called Shiro/Byakuei sealed inside her, which she uses to vanquish evil spirits.
* SupernaturalMartialArts: She's a skilled martial artist with superhuman physical abilities.
* StepfordSmiler: She hides a lot of sorrows behind that smile.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She looks almost exactly like her mother did, but younger.
* SympatheticMurderBackstory: She killed her CoolBigSis Yomi in an [[KillingInSelfDefense act of self-defense]] after Yomi was corrupted by the Bane Stone, killed Kagura's father and then tried to kill Kagura.
* {{Synchronization}}: The chains of Byakuei connect its soul to Kagura's and whenever Byakuei gets injured, Kagura will get hurt as well.
* TaremeEyes: Her droopy eyes highlight her cuteness and serve a direct contrast to Yomi's TsurimeEyes, since Kagura is the younger one and more inexperienced of the two.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Yomi after she's brought back as a SplitPersonality of Izumi. In spite of all the evil things Yomi did because of the Bane Stone and knowing she could destroy the world, Kagura refuses to let Yomi die again and goes to great lengths to protect her this time.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Her father's death at hands of Mei and being rendered quadriplegic by Mitogawa already had Yomi on the border of breaking down. Then Kagura tells Yomi she believes she isn't the type of person who would murder Mei out of hatred, which Yomi doesn't deny because she did kill Mei for killing her father. Shaken by Yomi's silent confession, Kagura cries and leaves Yomi's hospital room. Believing Kagura has abandoned her, Yomi finally crosses the DespairEventHorizon and accepts the Bane Stone from Mitogawa to heal her body. However, the Bane Stone also corrupts Yomi, causing her to go in a murder spree against the exorcists that were once her allies and murders Kagura's father. Kagura is forced to kill Yomi to stop her.

* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Setsuna's Cain.

* ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike: Since Shizuru believes she can only rely on herself, she's very unhappy with Kagura saving her from a spirit jellyfish.
* DaddysLittleVillain: She was raised in a culture of organized crime and taught to kill from a young age, molding her into a Social Darwinist with a secret desire for a normal life. She sought to claim the Bane Stones for her father so that he could rule over the world of organized crime, but after he was fatally wounded protecting her from her own sister his last words for her were to live a normal life.
* {{Fingore}}: While trying to help Kagura and Izumi escape the SDCD, she gets the fingers on her left hand cut off. She has her hand bandaged up afterwards, and the epilogue implies she gains a prosthetic that she wears under a black glove.

* InconsistentColoring: According to colored pages and covers, she's either a blonde with reddish brown eyes or white-haired with blue-green eyes.
* JourneyToFindOneself: After the incident with the Kyuubi, Shizuru leaves Tokyo since the Juugondou is finished and her older sister has disappeared once again, so Shizuru needs to find her own path from now on.
* MirrorCharacter: Shizuru and Kagura have very similar lives, from being the heiresses of a clan involved in the supernatural and being forced to kill people to having older sisters who turned on them.
* MsFanservice: She's a busty half-foreign girl who blatantly flirts with Kensuke, propositions that he become her "slave" in lieu of her just cutting him open to get the Bane Stone shard embedded in his body, jokingly offering to sleep with him, and opening her shirt to expose her Bane stone... and ample cleavage.

* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Like her sister, she has white hair and is a member of a criminal syndicate; though after her HeelFaceTurn it loses this significance.

* GayRomanticPhase: Izumi thinks she has a crush on Kagura because she feels an immediate affection for her and gets jealous when she sees Kensuke near Kagura. After Kagura rescues her and Yomi from the SDCD, Izumi tells Kagura that while at first she thought she was "turning lesbian", she now knows her feelings stem from Yomi's sisterly love for Kagura bleeding over into her. She says she still likes Kagura, but in a friendly way.
* {{Gayngst}}: During the "Spiritual Consultant" arc she angsts to Tanaka about her crush on Kagura, wondering if she's strange for liking another girl.
* IdenticalStranger: Her face and ''name'' are nearly identical to Yomi's. Turns out she's Yomi's host.
* IfItsYouItsOK: She insists that she's not a lesbian, but admits she would be fine with hooking up with Kagura. However, this is a result of Yomi's sisterly affection for Kagura influencing Izumi.
* IncompatibleOrientation: Due to Yomi's feelings for Kagura bleeding over into her, Izumi develops a crush on Kagura. However, when she confesses her feelings to Kagura while the latter is amnesic, she is turned down for Kensuke despite Kagura not possessing any memories of her relationship with him.
* IronicFear: She's initially terrified of ghosts -- ironic for someone who's technically dead (though Izumi herself has no idea), and due to Yomi possessing her she attracts them like flies to rotting meat.
* MoralityPet: She serves as one for Yomi, who would've committed suicide had it not meant taking Izumi's life as well.
* NewTransferStudent: She transfers to Kagura's class after the incident with the Kyuubi since Izumi's old school and home were in what is now a restricted area.
* PartingWordsRegret: On the last day she saw her father alive, they had an argument that ended with her telling him she was going to leave him like her mother did. After the Kyuubi attacked and her father died, Izumi lamented what she said.

* AnimalEyeSpy: He can see through the eyes of his Kudagitsune for purposes of espionage. Thanks to this, he can still see perfectly fine even after he's poisoned by Mitogawa and left blind.
* BadassLongcoat: After becoming a spirit, he wears a long coat to look cooler.
* TheBeastmaster: He controls Kudagitsune, or spirit pipe foxes, using them for spying and battle.
* BelligerentSexualTension: He had this with Yomi back when she was alive. They would fight, argue and yell at each other no matter how obvious it was that they were in love.
* BlindWeaponmaster: He's blinded by Mitogawa, but this doesn't slow him down at all and most people don't even realize he can't see.
* ClearTheirName: When Yomi was suspected of murdering her cousin for status, Noriyuki did everything in his power to prove her innocence. Sadly, he found proof way too late.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He looks and acts like an incredibly sketchy HandsomeLech, yet is a very skilled fighter and an effective mentor to multiple characters.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: [[spoiler:He's fatally wounded while protecting Yomi/Izumi and dies as she holds him in her arms.]]
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: [[spoiler:After taking a fatal hit for her, he confesses to Yomi that he never stopped loving her.]]
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Kagura and other agents don't like hanging out with him because he's such an obnoxious pervert.
* FriendlyGhost: At the end of the manga, [[spoiler:Noriyuki stays around as a ghost after he's killed so he can be together with Yomi who is now Kagura's new GuardianEntity and he still helps the exorcists in missions.]]
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler:He smiles as he dies after protecting Yomi/Izumi.]]
* GuardianEntity: He's bonded to a pack of tube foxes that he uses to gather information and spy on people.
* HandicappedBadass: He loses his eyesight because of Mitogawa's poison, but he can still put up a good fight by using his foxes as his eyes.

* LikeBrotherAndSister: Even if he loves to grope her, Noriyuki is an older brother figure to Kagura.
* LovableSexManiac: He's quite the pervert and likes to grope Kagura's breasts.

* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: He likes to get touchy-feely with attractive women.

When Noriyuki said he smelled something bad, Kagura said she was the one trying on a perfume, to which Noriyuki jokingly said that she should use less or else she would smell like an old lady. Yomi got so mad that she threw hot coffee at his face.
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: His engagement to Yomi was arranged by his father for purely political reasons, but there's no doubt that even if they never stopped arguing, Yomi and Noriyuki loved each other. That their engagement was cut off because of Yomi being crippled was heartbreaking for both of them.
* ReflectionlessUselessEyes: The reason why his eyes no longer reflect light after his fight with Mitogawa is because he was left blind from the poison.
* SacrificialLion: He is killed when the Japanese government decides to assassinate Izumi/Yomi in order to prevent her from awakening to her destiny as the Black Priestess. This pushes Yomi across the DespairEventHorizon again and causes her to embrace said destiny as the Black Priestess.
* SinisterScythe: After Yomi turns him into a spirit, Noriyuki wields a scythe.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:He dies after he saved Yomi/Izumi from a stab meant for her.]]
* TogetherInDeath: He gets a more uplifting version of this with Yomi at the end of the manga. [[spoiler:Noriyuki dies protecting Yomi and Yomi's soul is purified thanks to Kagura's love for her. Now that Yomi's soul is linked to Kagura's, Noriyuki decides not to pass on yet so he can be together with Yomi as ghosts.]]
* TheTrickster: His easygoing and cheerful personality, conman tendencies, and lecherous attitude have him called a trickster by many of the other characters, though he's capable of being serious when the situation calls for it.
* TwoFirstNames: His family name Izuna can also be used as a given name in Japan.

* ButNotTooForeign: He's a tall man with white hair and occidental features, and usually lives in Australia; but he has a Japanese last name, indicating that he's at least partially of Japanese descent.
* TheHermit: He lives in isolation in the mountains of Japan.
* FunnyAfro: His afro along with his habit of walking around in the {{fundoshi}} makes him very funny-looking.
* FunnyForeigner: He speaks bad Japanese with a foreign accent, frequently mixing in some English words.
* MrFanservice: He's a ''very'' well-built man who wears nothing but a ''fundoshi'' -- traditional Japanese undergarments. [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome This has gotten him arrested for indecent exposure in the past...]]

----
* GuardianEntity: He can summon a two-headed samurai Shikigami called Shuwaretsu.

* MurderIsTheBestSolution: He advocated for killing Kagura when she became the Kyuubi's host, and for killing Izumi when she was discovered to contain Yomi's soul.
* MyGreatestFailure: Rushed into a fight as a child that resulted in his parents getting killed.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Like his sister and grandmother, he has white hair signifying his status as a powerful ''onmyōji''.

Sister-figure of Kagura who turned evil because of the power of the Bane Stone. She was killed by Kagura herself and has turned completely evil in her afterlife.
----
* AdaptationExpansion: The ''-Zero-'' anime greatly expands on Yomi's past, her relationships with Kagura and Izuna when she was human and depicts her StartOfDarkness and death in far more detail than the manga.
* AdoptionDiss: Yomi was loved by her adoptive father and he had full trust in her to become a good family head. However, her father's brother disapproved of an adopted child becoming the successor of the Isayama family and he believed his daughter Mei was much better fit for the position. While Mei didn't express her dissatisfaction as openly as her father, she was secretly envious and resentful as she would have been the only heir if Yomi had never been adopted. For this, Yomi was treated coldly and looked down on by her adopted uncle and cousin.
* AmbiguouslyBi: While she pretended that she was engaged to Noriyuki out of obligation to her family, it was obvious she was in love with him despite their constant arguing. However, while she was alive she was ''very'' flirtatious towards Kagura -- even kissing her to swipe the last bite of Pocky. After her resurrection, her jealousy towards Kensuke's relationship with Kagura so intense that Izumi can feel it; and when confessing her feelings to Kagura, Izumi states that the love she feels for Kagura is bleeding over from Yomi. However, Izumi states that Yomi's love for Kagura is "[[IncestSubtext sisterly]]" and the one Yomi loves romantically is still Noriyuki.
* ApocalypseMaiden: She is chosen by the Kyuubi to be the Black Priestess, destined to bring about the destruction of humanity. Sozaemon realizes that destroying her as the Black Priestess would prove to the World that humanity is beyond redemption and instigate the final stage Destruction Program, and has the other ''onmyōji'' stand down.
* AxCrazy: In the manga, after being corrupted by the Bane Stone she becomes consumed by bloodlust and hatred, slaughtering those who were once her comrades and maniacally declaring her intent to destroy everything.
* BattleAura: As the Black Priestess, she radiates an aura of miasma that intensifies when she's angry.
* BelligerentSexualTension: The prequel shows she and Noriyuki argued and fought constantly, both claiming they were only engaged because their parents decided so. Obviously, the two were actually happy they would marry each other.
* {{BFS}}:
** As illustrated in Chapter 10, Shishio is a black-bladed nodachi as long as Yomi is tall.
** After accepting her role as the Black Priestess, Yomi manifests a massive nine-branched sword.
* BigSisterInstinct: As a human, Yomi's main priority was to care for and protect Kagura as an older sister. In fact, she wanted to protect Kagura so much that she let her kill her so she wouldn't hurt Kagura. Once she's brought back free from the Bane Stone, Yomi once again does everything she can to protect Kagura. [[spoiler:At the end of the manga, Yomi fuses herself with Kagura's soul to save Kagura's life after Byakuei is killed.]]
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: As an ''onryō'' and the Black Priestess, she has black sclera, red irises, and HellishPupils that accentuate her corrupted status.
* BreakTheCutie: She was a perky and sweet-natured girl until Mitogawa appeared and everything went downhill for her.
* BreakoutVillain: While she was vanquished at the end of the first arc, the popularity of ''Anime/GaReiZero'' led to her being brought back [[HeelFaceTurn as one of the good guys]].
* BrokenPedestal: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. Kagura was saddened when Yomi indirectly admitted she killed her own cousin Mei and Yomi was convinced that Kagura would never forgive her for it. However, Kagura was just stunned by the revelation; she still loved Yomi and wanted to be on her side. Unfortunately, being given the impression that Kagura had abandoned her finally pushed Yomi over the edge and made her accept the Bane Stone that corrupted her.
* CainAndAbel: An extremely tragic Cain to Kagura's Abel. The two loved each other as sisters, but then Yomi had her life ruined by Mitogawa and was corrupted by the Bane Stone, turning her into Kagura's enemy. Kagura was forced to kill Yomi and later, exorcise her after she returned as an evil ghost.
* ClingyJealousGirl:
** She has never been fond of seeing Noriyuki flirting with other women.
** Izumi notes that whenever she looks at Kensuke and Kagura together she feels disquieting jealousy, and after Yomi takes over to save Kagura from the Jinmengyo she quietly whispers that she won't let anyone take Kagura from her again.
* CoolBigSis: She was a caring, playful and protective big sister figure who was dearly loved and admired by Kagura before her life went downhill.
* CoolSword: In life and as an ''onryō'', she wielded a supernatural nodachi called Shishio, which contained the ''nue'' Ranguren. As the Black Priestess, she can summon a seven-branched {{BFS}}.
* TheCorruption: At her moment of greatest despair, Yomi accepts the Bane Stone from Mitogawa. It corrupts her soul and turns her into an evil onryo.
* DarkIsNotEvil: In her human life, Yomi dressed in a black school uniform and her spiritual beast is a chimera-like monster with an extremely frightening appearance. Yomi was a truly good and heroic person until Mitogawa gave her the Bane Stone.
* DespairEventHorizon:
** She loses her adoptive father, is rendered crippled for life and mute and her engagement to Noriyuki is cut off because of her condition. The last straw is when she thinks Kagura has abandoned her for murdering Mei in cold blood. Having lost everything and everyone dear to her, she accepts the Bane Stone when Mitogawa offers it to her, which corrupts her soul.
** She crosses it once again after being brought back in the manga. [[spoiler:Seeing Noriyuki getting killed while protecting her causes Yomi to have a breakdown and give in to her fate as the Black Priestess. Fortunately, this time her soul is saved thanks to Kagura's love.]]
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: After Mitogawa snatches the Bane Stone from her forehead, Izuna holds her vanishing head in his hands until she completely disappears.
* DontLookAtMe: She pleads Kagura to not look as the miasma is trying to corrupt her and turn her back into an evil specter.
* DoomMagnet: After returning as the Black Priestess, Yomi spreads an aura of heavy miasma around her, which makes specters attack her.
* DrivenToVillainy: Despite the atrocities she commits in the first arc of the manga, Yomi didn't become a villain by choice. In life, she was a very good person and a CoolBigSis to Kagura. Mitogawa was the one who systematically ruined Yomi's life by manipulating everything so Yomi killed her own cousin in revenge for her father and then her rendered crippled and mute while everyone suspects her of having murdered her cousin for nothing but status. When it seems even Noriyuki and Kagura have abandoned her, Yomi fell into despair and accepted the Bane Stone from Mitogawa to heal herself, but in exchange it possessed her and amplified her hatred for the world that made her suffer.
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: After allowing Kagura to put her out of her misery, Yomi embraces her and tells her that she loves her as her precious little sister.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: She has jet-black hair and pale skin, just to give you a sign that you should be wary around her.
* EyeScream: Mitogawa's attack caused her to lose one eye.
* FallenHero: She was a genuinely good person who dedicated herself to being an exorcist and protecting people from evil spirits. Then Mitogawa came along and had her entire life ruined by indirectly causing her father's death and rendering Yomi quadriplegic and mute. She ended up accepting the ArtifactOfDoom that could heal her paralytic body in exchange of being corrupted by it. Kagura has to kill her to stop her murder spree, but Yomi's soul is still controlled by the Bane Stone, causing her to come back as an onryo who tries to take over Tokyo.
* FightingFromTheInside: When the Bane Stone took control over her, Yomi could still have glimpses of being herself and wanted to be killed to put a stop to her massacre. In the end, her desire to protect Kagura was what allowed her to fight off the Bane Stone enough to let Kagura kill her.
* FullFrontalAssault: After healing herself with the Bane Stone and getting possessed by it, a naked Yomi goes to kill Mei's father.
* GoodGirlGoneBad: She was a CoolBigSis who fought to protect people from evil spirits until her father got murdered by her cousin, she was accused of killing her cousin for the inheritance and Mitogawa left her bedridden for life. With all chances of a good future taken away from her, Yomi accepted the Bane Stone that turned her into an evil, murderous spirit.
* GuardianEntity: After Byakuei is killed by Kirin, Yomi's love for Kagura lets her purge herself of the miasma corrupting her soul and take Byakuei's place to save Kagura's life. In the epilogue, she's shown as a ghost giving Kagura and Kensuke kendo lessons, and going on group dates with them and Izuna.
* HappilyAdopted: She lost her parents at a young age to specters and was taken in by the head of the Isayama family. Yomi loved and respected her adoptive father very much and polished her skills to repay him for his kindness.
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. Yomi was adopted into a family of exorcists after her parents were killed by specters. She didn't have any natural skill for exorcism, but through sheer effort and training, she became an accomplished exorcist of her own right. However, Yomi grew jealous of Kagura because her linage and talent allowed her to reach Yomi's level very quickly without even half the effort Yomi put in.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: She was originally a good person, but was corrupted by a Bane Stone shard and became the manga's first villain. She was "resurrected" by Kagura and became one of the main characters, showing remorse for her past villainy; but after being pushed over the DespairEventHorizon she embraces her destiny as the Black Priestess and tries to destroy the world. In the end, Izumi, Kensuke, and Kagura manages to talk her down, and Yomi bonds with her to save her life after Byakuei is killed.
* HellishPupils: In the manga, her pupils become vertical slits after she's corrupted by the Bane Stone and as the Black Priestess. After divesting herself of miasma, her eyes go back to normal.
* HimeCut: Her hairstyle consists of parted blunt bangs, cheek-length sidelocks, and hip-length straight hair. This represented her status as the future family head of the Isayama clan back when she was alive.
* ICannotSelfTerminate: In Episode 11 of ''Ga-Rei Zero'', Yomi tries to cut her own throat and commit seppuku, but cannot due to the Bane Stone. After her resurrection, she attempts to decapitate herself only to be reminded that committing suicide would mean killing Izumi as well, and asks Kensuke to kill her instead.
* TheLostLenore: Noriyuki never stopped loving Yomi and her death had a huge impact in him.
* LoveRedeems: At the end of the manga, [[spoiler:it's Kagura loving Yomi as her family in spite of everything what purifies Yomi's soul.]]
* MergerOfSouls: At the end of the manga, Yomi merges her soul with Kagura's to save her after Byakuei dies.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: When released from the influence of the Bane Stone, Yomi is horrified by the evil things she did, mainly killing her fellow exorcists and trying to take over Tokyo.
* TheNotLoveInterest: To Kagura in the prequel anime and after Yomi is brought back in the manga. Kagura and Yomi are repeatedly stated to be the most important person to each other and their mutual devotion is way more intense than the one they have for their boyfriends. They share a PseudoRomanticFriendship, but their relationship is that of sisters at its core.
* NowThatsUsingYourTeeth: She can block Kensuke's blade with her teeth.
* OddlyShapedSword: When controlling Izumi's body, Yomi can summon a seven-branched sword for battle.
* OmnicidalManiac: As an ''onryō'', she intended to disrupt Tokyo's ''reimyaku'' to summon the Tengu, assimilate it, and destroy Japan.
* ParasolOfPrettiness: As an onryo, she carries around a Japanese parasol to complement her ladylike appearance.
* ParentalSubstitute: Yomi started looking after Kagura shortly after the latter lost her mother, making Yomi a mother figure as much as a sister figure to Kagura. Some of their friends even called Kagura "Yomi's daughter".
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: Noriyuki's father asked her father to let Noriyuki marry Yomi, being interested in the Isayama family's influence. Yomi was given the freedom to reject the marriage offer, but she accepted it, claiming it was for the sake of honor and duty to her family. Of course, the truth was that she was very much happy with the idea of marrying Noriyuki. Poor Yomi was terribly heartbroken when she was informed the engagement was cancelled because Mitogawa's attack rendered her quadriplegic.
* PetTheDog: She ejects herself from Izumi's body while becoming the Black Priestess so as to not taint her soul with miasma.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: Her death at hands of Kagura and her return as an onryou are what eventually leads to Kensuke meeting Kagura.
* PowerDyesYourHair: On the cover of Volume 3 her Bane Stone-augmented ''onryō'' form is shown with red hair, as opposed to the black hair she had in life.
* ProtagonistJourneyToVillain: ''Ga-Rei Zero'' chronicles the story of her fall from one of the Countermeasures Department's top exorcists to the murderous ''onryō'' introduced in the manga's first arc, and provided her with such a surge in popularity that she was brought back as a main character.
* PseudoRomanticFriendship: Yomi has flirted with Kagura, is very physically affectionate with her, and kissed her ''in the lips'' while alive as well as expressed jealous possessiveness towards Kagura. However, the love between the two girls is stated to be sisterly.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: The cover of Volume 3 depicts her with red irises in her ''onryō'' form.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: After the Bane Stone-corrupted Mei kills her father, Yomi goes berserk and kills her.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: In the prequel anime, she's very rarely seen in anything other than her black school uniform.
* SharingABody: She's "resurrected" by having her soul implanted into the recently-deceased Izumi Isoyama, effectively turning Yomi into a SplitPersonality that takes over when Izumi or Kagura are in danger.
* SlasherSmile: As an ''onryō'', she was prone to sporting nightmarishly bloodthirsty grins, particularly when confronted by Kagura and Izuna.
* SoProudOfYou: In her first death, she told Kagura she was very proud of having her for a little sister.
* StarterVillain: She's the villain of the first arc in the manga.
* StringyHairedGhostGirl: She was corrupted by a Bane Stone shard implanted into her by Kazuhiro Mitogawa, which even before her death turned her into an ''onryō''.
* SuicideByCop: After being corrupted by the Bane Stone, Yomi uses her last bit of consciousness to give Kagura a chance to kill her.
* TogetherInDeath: At the end of the manga, she and Noriyuki can finally be together [[spoiler:since now they're both ghosts watching over Kagura and they apparently go on double dates with Kagura and Kensuke.]]
* TragicBromance: A female version with Kagura. Yomi was like an older sister to her and they loved each other more than anything. Everything went to hell when Mitogawa corrupted Yomi with a Bane Stone. Kagura was forced to fight a corrupted Yomi who let Kagura kill her in order to protect her little sister from herself.
* TragicHero: Yomi's existence was filled with tragedy even ''after'' death. Having lost her father, her family inherence, her ability to move and speak and believing to have been abandoned by the two people she loved the most, she accepted the Bane Stone from Mitogawa to heal herself. The resulting corruption leads Yomi to murder her fellow exorcists, including Kagura's father. Yomi is horrified at what she was done, but the Bane Stone won't let her kill herself so she allows Kagura to finish her off. Unfortunately, Yomi's soul is still corrupted by the Bane Stone and she returns as a purely evil onryo. Kagura and Kensuke finally defeat her. Later on, however, she returns as a hero once again after Kagura's wish manifests Yomi as a SplitPersonality of Izumi. Yomi learns she has been chosen as the Black Priestess who will destroy the world and she concludes a tragedy similar to the one in her human life will repeat. After Noriyuki dies protecting her, Yomi loses it and gives in to her dark destiny.
* TraumaCongaLine:
** ''Ga-Rei -Zero-'' is about the excruciating story of how Yomi lost everything dear to her in life. Yomi's adoptive father is killed by her Bane Stone-mind-controlled adoptive cousin Mei who takes what was supposed to be her place as the family head and her inheritance, then lures her to a fight. When Mei admits killing Yomi's father, she goes berserk and kills her. Then Mitogawa attacks Yomi, rendering her quadriplegic and mute, and she is accused of murdering Mei to get her status back. Her fiancé Noriyuki is too busy trying to prove her innocence to visit her in the hospital, his father breaks off their PerfectlyArrangedMarriage because of her physical condition, and her little sister figure Kagura appears to abandon her after she admits to killing Mei. Then Mitogawa gives her the same Bane Stone, which heals her but its mind-control powers provide the extra push to send her JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope and killing her former friends.
** As if what's shown in the anime wasn't bad enough, her conga line continues in the manga. After being accidentally brought back through Izumi by Kagura's wish, Yomi discovers she's an ApocalypseMaiden which causes her to be pursued by both the Agency and specters that are attracted to her miasma, all while feeling guilty that Kagura is betraying the Agency for her sake. All goes FromBadToWorse when [[spoiler:Noriyuki]] is killed while shielding her from the Four Devas. Yomi snaps completely and gives into her role as the Black Priestess in order to destroy the world.
* {{Tsundere}}: No matter how easily she got annoyed at Noriyuki and how hard she hit him, it wasn't hard to tell she really loved him.
* TsurimeEyes: Her sharp eyes serve as a direct contrast to Kagura's TaremeEyes, reflecting how Yomi is the most confident and assertive of the two, as well as her {{Tsundere}} tendencies towards Noriyuki.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds:
** After having her entire life ruined and being pushed past the DespairEventHorizon, Yomi accepts the Bane Stone. Its evil influence amplifies by magnitude Yomi's hatred towards the world that made her suffer so much and sends her into a murderous rampage against her former allies. Despite all the bloodshed that she causes, Yomi is incredibly pitiful and tragic to the bitter end.
** Happens again later in the manga. After returning as a SplitPersonality of Izumi and finding out she's going to destroy world as the Black Priestess, Yomi clearly doesn't want to hurt anyone again and just tries to keep Kagura safe. After Noriyuki is killed while protecting her, Yomi snaps. In her despair, she accepts the dark power of the Black Priestess and starts the ritual to end the world which she thinks is screwed anyway.
* YouKilledMyFather: She killed Mei in cold blood in revenge for her adoptive father, who Mei had killed while under the influence of a Bane Stone and then had the nerve to taunt Yomi about it.

A boy who used to belong to the Agency. He was enthralled by the Bane Stone, hoping to use the Kyuubi's powers to revive his mother, an exorcist who had been previously killed in action. When Lord Tamamo appeared to him in the Vatican's library, he willingly became one of her minions. He was the one who gave Yomi her Bane Stone and later took it away after he was displeased with Yomi giving one to Kensuke.
----
* TheAgeless: He always looks like a child because of the power of the Bane Stone.
* AnimalMotifs: He can summon and transform into a swarm of [[ButterflyOfDeathAndRebirth creepy butterflies]], and can sprout butterfly wings to fly.
* TheCorrupter: Mitogawa serves as this to several characters, namely Mei and Yomi, through use of the Bane Stone shards.
* DiscOneFinalBoss: He's the main villain the first few arcs of the manga and of ''Ga Rei Zero'', having masterminded Yomi's corruption in order to gather the Bane Stones, summon the Kyuubi, and resurrect his mother.
* TheDragon: He serves as one for Tamamo-no-Mae, picking recepticles for the Bane Stone shards in order to determine who will summon the Nine-Tailed Demon-Fox.
* EnfantTerrible: {{Subverted|Trope}}. He only ''looks'' like an evil kid, but he's at least in his late teens.
* HiddenAgendaVillain: Mitogawa's goals in serving Tamamo-no-Mae remain a mystery, and during the second half of the Juugondō arc he helps both Kagura's group and the Juugondō -- maintaining that he's a neutral party whose goal is to see the rivival of the Kyuubi.

* ForcefulKiss: He steals a kiss from Kagura when he brings her and Kensuke to Tamamo's garden.
* FreudianExcuse: His mother was an exorcist who died doing her job. His goal is to create a world where his mother can be alive and exorcists don't have to stay hidden anymore.
* TheHeavy: He's the most recurring villain for the majority of the manga and is responsible for other villains like Yomi and Setsuna since he gave them the Bane Stone. However, he's just following Tamamo's orders.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Everything he did was for the sake of bringing his mother back to life. [[spoiler:As soon as his wish comes true, his resurrected mother kills him when she learns of the monster her son is.]]

* NotQuiteFlight: He attaches a big butterfly to his back and uses it to fly.
* OlderThanHeLooks: He halted his aging process when he was a kid because that appearance helps lowering the enemy's guard.
* OneToMillionToOne: He can transform into a swarm of butterflies.
* {{Patricide}}: He killed his own father when he tried to put a stop to his son's evil.
* PestController: He uses insect-related magic, mainly butterflies.
* ToUnmasqueTheWorld: By summoning the Kyuubi, he wants to reveal exorcists and spirits to the world since he blames his suffering and his mother's death on their world being kept in the dark.
* WildCard: He's fine with any possessor of the Bane Stone becoming the new host of the Kyuubei since he only wants Tamamo to grant his wish to resurrect his mother.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: He's a major antagonist in the manga and prequel anime. His white hair is one of the things that gives away how evil he is.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: He picked Yomi as one of the candidates to become the Kyuubi's host, but destroys her by ripping out her Bane Stone -- which he had bequeathed to her in the first place -- after she fails to unleash the Tengu.

Kagura's eponymous beast with the form of a dragon-like inugami with chains wrapped around it. He is one of the most powerful spirit beasts on earth. He was sealed in ancient times and has been passed down to the head of the Tsuchimiya family for generations. A lengthy ritual is required to seal Byakuei inside the recipient and Byakuei is never completely released, as he would break free of the seal and devour his owner.
----
* CantLiveWithoutYou: Byakuei is connected to Kagura's soul. If Byakuei dies, Kagura will die too. [[spoiler:They manage to walk around this at the end of the manga where Yomi saves Kagura by taking Byakuei's place as her GuardianEntity.]]
* EatingTheEnemy: Kagrua's main method of dispatching monsters is to summon Byakuei to devour them.
* ExtraEyes: In his Bane Stone-corrupted form he has four eyes on each head.

* MultipleHeadCase: In his Bane Stone-corrupted form he has two heads.
* MultipleTailedBeast: In his Bane Stone-corrupted form he has two tails.
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: He's actually an inugami, but due to being corrupted by a Bane Stone he initially resembles a dragon. Once it's removed he's restored to his original canine form.
* {{Reincarnation}}: He's initially stated to be an incarnation of the Kyuubi that manifested shortly after it was vanquished, though he's eventually shown to be an inugami corrupted by one of the Bane Stones. In the epilogue, Byakuei and Kirin are shown to have been reborn as puppies, curled up together in the form of a yin yang.
* SealedBadassInACan: He is sealed inside the body of the head of the Tsuchimiya clan, his current host being Kagura.

* SuperPoweredEvilSide: His two-headed draconic form is the result of him being corrupted by a Bane Stone fragment.

A cute little tanuki who protects Kensuke from his mate, who was corrupted by a Bane Stone. After the death of his mate, he is taken in by Kensuke and becomes something like his pet.

[[folder:Kyuubi]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kyubi_garei.jpg]]

A large monster the size of a city created when the ten pieces of the Bane Stone came together. The might of the creature grants the host unlimited power to grant their hearts deepest wish no matter how impossible it is.
----
* AnimalisticAbomination: It vaguely resembles a massive nine-tailed fox... except its tails are tentacles; it has scales, making it look more like a [[DraconicAbomination dragon]]; and it is comprised of corrupted spiritual energy so potent that even people without TrueSight can see it. It's later revealed to be an entity that plays a key role in the destruction and restoration of the world.
* AsianFoxSpirit: The Kyuubi is said to be a powerful nine-tailed fox that destroyed kingdoms in India and China before becoming the Spirit Beast of the malicious exorcist Tamamo, but is actually an EldritchAbomination made of millennia's worth of miasma.
* TheChooserOfTheOne: Upon creating Naraku, it selects the candidates for the White Priestess and Black Priestess -- choosing Kagura due to her being the latest in a long lineage of ''onmyōji'' and ties to Byukuei (despite her also being its host at the time, and therefore at risk of death and/or turning into an ''onryō''), and Yomi as the Black Priestess based on Kagura's memories and her having embraced the darkness out of a desire to escape her fate.
* TheCorruption: Its spiritual energy gives those who use the Bane Stone shards superhuman abilities, but corrupts them into ''onryō'' unless they take ample precautions.
* DestroyerDeity: Okama and the Land God refer to it as such when speaking about the Destruction Program and Yomi's role as the Black Priestess, saying it was born from the will of the planet to purify the land of Japan -- absorbing the ''kegare'' produced by humanity's hatred in order to create a zone of intense miasma called Naraku. The Bane Stones and Tamamo-no-Mae factor into the Destruction Program by corrupting spirits and selecting candidates for the role of the Black Priestess.
* GodOfEvil: Mitogawa refers to it as such, saying it devastated three dynasties in India and China -- a reference to the legend of Tamamo-no-Mae.
* MultipleHeadCase: After Kirin assimilates the Asura, the Kyuubi is reborn with three heads and six arms.
* SealedEvilInASixPack: Its power was sealed into the ten ''Sesshoseki'' or Bane Stones. The goal of the antagonists -- particularly Mitogawa and Setsuna -- is to assemble the Bane Stones and summon the Kyuubi to get a wish granted.
* ShroudedInMyth: It's so ancient that the details of its origin and history have become lost to time and legend, and it's reputed to just be an exceptionally powerful Spirit-Beast when it's actually something much worse.

* FusionDance: It absorbs the Asura formed from Naraku to become a three-headed version of Kyuubi.
* {{Reincarnation}}: It coalesced from remnants of the Kyuubi after it was destroyed by Kensuke and Byakuei. In the epilogue, Kirin and Byakuei are shown to have been reborn as puppies, curled up together in the form of a yin yang.
