!!Terra Mason
->“My only talent is not knowing when to give up.”

->[[spoiler:“I sacrificed my normal life to come here before I discovered I was fated to die in an accident. I chose to stay here and continue on even when everyone else told me to quit, that I wasn't good enough. Even the Sybil think I'm nothing. I don't care! I am not Kairos! Everything came naturally to her while I had to scrape and claw my way past every obstacle. I barely made it, but I did it on my own. No fate or destiny ever helped me. No one chose me so I chose myself and I will become a heroine of Saturn City, the Aeon Legion, and all of Time! Because I can choose to be the hero you failed to be! Now get out of my way!”]] %%Maybe delete this quote and keep only one?

The novel's main protagonist. Terra Mason is an ordinary 18 year old girl from present times whose only notable qualities, other than her stubbornness, is her mild fascination with history and sizable rock collection. But when she finds she is the only person left to stop a time traveling Nazi, she steps up and manages to delay Hanns just long enough for Alya to stop him. Alya then offers Terra a chance only normally reserved for history's finest soldiers; a chance to join the Aeon Legion.
Terra's stubborn nature is both her deepest flaw and greatest asset. It keeps her going in spite of constant self doubt that others in the training keep using against her trying to get her to quit. Very little is handed to Terra, but her persistence and lack of a traumatic past provides her a key edge against her often far more skilled competition.

----
* ActionGirl: What Terra eventually becomes.
* BrutalHonesty: As Roland points out, Terra's blunt nature and lack of tact will win her few allies. [[spoiler:Most notable when she rips into Lycus for comparing her to Kairos.]]
* CombatPragmatist: [[spoiler:She is the only character to outsmart Hanns.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: “To be clear, I hit a guy on the head with a rock because he tried to borrow a book and this makes me qualified to join the time police?”
* {{Determinator}}: Her strongest feature. Terra refuses to give up. Even before she underwent her TrainingFromHell others noted how she would not flinch. She wins many of her fights after being knocked down and her opponent assumes she is beaten only for Terra to get right back up.
* FacePalm: Terra seems fond of these. Especially in response to Alya's [[LeeroyJenkins battle tactics]].
* HeroesPreferSwords: And so does Terra, at least until Alya scolds Terra over her enthusiasm for an object designed to kill. Alya likely wished for Terra to regard an aeon edge weapon with a healthy level of respect due for such [[ComesGreatResponsibility a powerful device]].
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:After Zaid dies. She almost doesn't go on, but Roland nudges her forward into the next Trial.]]
* IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim: [[spoiler:One reason Terra does not kill Hanns.]]
* IJustWantToBeBadass: After Terra watches Alya beat up an entire platoon of Nazis by herself, Terra decides that she wants time powers too.
* ImmuneToFate: [[spoiler:Terra is a null, someone who has no connection with fate at all.]]
* LivingLieDetector: Terra is pretty good at cutting through Roland's lies and Hanns's weak justifications. Too bad she isn't very good at arguing back. %%Not sure this applies since this is not a supernatural ability?
* MadeOfIron: She is so tough that often her foes can't hurt her, but she herself is terrible at attacking. Often she wins through sheer attrition. Lycus even refers to Terra's level of endurance as “ downright scary”.
* MeaningfulName: “Terra” the Latin word for Earth and her last name “Mason”, the name of a stone worker. It fits with her interest in geology, the study of the intersection of Earth and Time. Alya even finds Terra in a quarry which goes along with Terra's symbolic journey from stone to steel. Hence why everyone keeps telling Terra that “[[ArcWords I have seen the steel in you]].” %%This is rather superflous. Maybe it should be deleted?
* NaiveNewcomer: Terra experiences quiet a bit of culture shock upon seeing [[CrystalSpiresAndTogas Saturn City]] for the first time.
* NewMeat: Nearly everyone expects Terra to 'dust out' or fail the training program as even many hardened soldiers fail their first attempts. %%Maybe this or Naive Newcomer should be deleted and condensed into one example?
* NervesOfSteel: Terra does not flinch even before she gets crazy time powers.
* OddFriendship: With Delphia, a beautiful Saturnian woman who is nearly opposite of Terra in every way. Also Zaid, a Muslim Mamluk.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Terra is surrounded by Spartans, Knights, Ninjas, Dinosaurs, Nazis, and Legendary Blades. Her greatest achievement before joining the Aeon Legion? Graduating high school and having a nice rock collection.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: [[spoiler:Terra comes close to one of these when the Manticore kills Zaid.]]
* TheSquire: What Terra is to Alya.
* StoneWall: has a knack for taking damage but has a rather pitiful offence
* TimeTravelEscape: [[spoiler:Terra would have died in her Continuum in a car accident if she had stayed. She doesn't find out to halfway through her training.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: In an academy for badasses, Terra had to take several just to compete.
** [[spoiler:She doesn't do too bad considering she ends her duel with Hikari in a draw during the Trial of Blades.]]
* TryingNotToCry: Terra hasn't cried since grade school. [[spoiler:And she doesn’t cry throughout the entire story. Even after losing friends.]]
* TheUnchosenOne: [[spoiler:Terra discovers she is a null, someone without a connection to fate. She keeps going regardless.]]
* WideEyedIdealist: Terra has a few shades of this, especially with her expectations of history. %%Needs more context?

[[folder:Alya]]
!!Alya Silverwind
-> “You know Orion, that's the thing I like most about you. You are adorable when you try to give me orders.”

->“She treats my orders more like amusing suggestions and that's when she doesn't laugh in my face.” %%Maybe delete this quote too?

Alya Silverwind is one of the greatest of the Legendary Blades, an elite group of 12 individuals who are the strongest in the Aeon Legion. In her opening introduction alone she disables an entire platoon of Nazi soldiers without killing them. She is the first person to truly recognize Terra's potential and decides to take Terra on as a squire. Then she dumps Terra off at the Aveum Academy and ignores her.
Alya's presence in Terra's training is flighty at best and very little is revealed about Alya's past. What few details Terra does discover is filtered through Terra's admiration and hero worship or heard second hand from people who dislike Alya like Lycus.

----
* TheAce: One of the best in the Aeon Legion. Even when compared to the other Legendary Blades.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Alya has very little patience for things like “planning” or “tactics”. Not that she really needs them.
* BigDamnHeroes: Saves Terra from Hanns [[spoiler:and later Kairos]].
* BloodKnight: [[spoiler:What Lycus claims Alya is.]]
* BrokenAce: Alya herself says as much. Likely due to her survivors guilt.
* BrokenPedestal: Alya almost becomes this to Terra [[spoiler:after Lycus tells Terra that Alya is a war criminal]].
* TheChooserOfTheOne: Every person Alya chooses as her squire always becomes famous and stops some great threat to Time. [[spoiler:However, they all die doing so.]]
* ComesGreatResponsibility: What Alya basically tells Terra about wielding an [[CoolSword aeon edge]].
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Hinted at by Lycus. Terra is unable to find out for sure since Saturn City erased all information on Saturnian War crimes from their Archives.]]
* DanceBattler: Alya is very fast and impossibly graceful when she fights.
* GuiltComplex: Seems to suffer from this [[spoiler:since all of her squires keep dying or vanishing.]]
* HypercompetentSidekick: What all of Alya's squires eventually turn into.
* LeeroyJenkins: Alya's primary battle style. However, she is so skilled that she pulls it off anyway. %%Not sure if this is the right trope? I would think this would apply only to video games, but there are non video games examples on the trope page.
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Alya's argument with Orion has this vibe.
* LivingLegend: Alya is a member of the Legendary Blades and famous since her squires all end up saving the Aeon Legion.
* TheMentor: To Terra, though to a lesser extent. She seems to take a very hands off approach, though Alya herself has openly said she dislikes teaching most of the things that Terra could learn at the Academy anyway.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: [[spoiler:Inverted. Instead all of Alya's squires die or go missing while she continues to survive. Seems to be the source of her GuiltComplex.]]
* MrExposition: Defied. Alya “hates explaining things everyone should already know”.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Seems to be a Saturnian trait or it could be that Alya just doesn't care.
* OneWomanArmy: Orion even says so. She proves it during the second battle with Hanns when she defeats an army of SS soldiers.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: She takes out an entire platoon in chapter two. Later on she devastates a large encampment of SS troops and then is disappointed that they didn't put up much of a fight.
* Really700YearsOld: She is likely centuries old at the very least.
* RebelliousSpirit: Seems to go out of her way to contradict orders.
* SirSwearsALot: “Crash” in Saturnian culture is a curse word and Alya is very fond of it.
* YouAreNotReady: When Terra wants to learn how to use an aeon edge early in her training.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Roland]]
!!Sir Roland Delmare
->“Jerk? I am unfamiliar with this expression. Does it mean incredibly handsome, smart, and wealthy?”

A knight that Terra encounters during her first trip to the academy who is about as far from chivalry as one can get given that Roland lies, cheats, and steals. He even appears bemused when Terra explains the concept of chivalry to him. Despite Terra's initial theory that Roland is a mere con artist who is pretending to be a knight, Roland's amazing swordsmanship skills cast that assumption into doubt. Roland can easily lie his way past nearly everyone in the entire academy, except Terra who is the only one that can see through his deceptions.

----
* BrilliantButLazy: He always takes the path of least resistance. His intelligence comes in handy during the Trial and War.
* CombatPragmatist: Very much so. Even though Roland's swordsmanship skills are nearly second to none, yet he still prefers to use clever tricks to win his battles.
* ConMan: He has shades of this. Terra even doubts his credentials as a knight.
* ConsummateLiar: Roland lies his way into the academy and lies his way past many of his tests. Very few are able to see through his lies as well. Terra seems to be the best at it. However, Zaid is also the one other person to call Roland out on his lies. %%Not sure if this is the right trope?
* TheCynic: In rare moments, Roland drops his charismatic facade to reveal just how cynical he really is.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Roland hints at a possible betrayal in his past. It would explain his untrusting nature.
* DeadpanSnarker: Terra's match in terms of sheer snark. %%Does this need a better example?
* {{Dismotivation}}: Roland's primary motivation is gain Saturn City citizenship so he can enjoy his immortality. He seems to think that he had already earned it even and refuses to work as hard as those around him.
* {{Foil}}: Again to Terra. Roland's confidence contrasts with Terra's constant self doubt. He is also well liked, but ultimately cynical as opposed to Terra who is disliked by others, but ultimately idealistic. Roland's very nature as a liar clashes with Terra's brutal honesty. The biggest contrast though his Roland's innate skill and mastery of both the shieldwatch and aeon edged sword, both of which Terra struggles to master through nothing more than hard work.
* GuileHero: [[spoiler:Roland's lateral thinking saves everyone during the Trial of War and later on gives Terra an opportunity to attack Hanns directly.]]
* ImmortalitySeeker: Roland's primary goal. He seems fixated on it.
* {{Jerkass}}: He appears to enjoy making Terra angry and is completely without remorse about his manipulations.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Tells Terra that her blunt honesty will alienate others in a time where she could really use some friends.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: [[spoiler:Terra manages to bring out Roland's better traits during the Trial of War. He is also the only person to help her after Terra nearly quits because of losing Zaid.]]
* KnightInSourArmor: What Roland actually is which defies Terra's [[KnightInShiningArmor expectations]].
* ManipulativeBastard: He lies his way into the academy after being thrown out the first time.
* MasterSwordsman: Amongst the academy’s students, Roland is arguably the best swordsman.
* MoralityChain: [[spoiler:What Terra becomes to Roland when she finally goads him into helping her save the other strike teams during the Trial of War.]]
* OldSchoolChivalry: Averted. Roland even finds the concept childish. %%Delete this? He doesn't fit the trope as this is more of a character's reaction to the trope.
* SeamlessSpontaneousLie: Roland's skill at lying is only matched by his skill with a sword.
* SocialEngineering: How he gets accepted into the academy.
* TallDarkAndSnarky: So much so that when he is honest it throws Terra off.
* TookALevelInIdealism: [[spoiler:At least a temporary level during the Trial of War.]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hikari]]
!!Hikari Urashima
->“Two types of people exist in the world. Fire and tinder. Those like fire have power and they shine brightly. They create and destroy. All others are nothing more than tinder to fuel the fire. That is what this training is, separating the fire from the tinder. The weak burn away and turn into dust and ash while the strong burn brighter.”

Hikari Urashima is a Japanese girl from the UsefulNotes/SengokuPeriod and the top student at the Aveum Academy. Already skilled in hand to hand combat, she also quickly masters the shieldwatch and seems obsessed with getting an aeon edge. She remains distant from the other students and ends up becoming Terra's rival as the story goes on.

----
* TheAce: Hikari has the most points out of all the students at the academy.
* ActionGirl: Hikari is skilled in acrobatics and martial arts.
* AloofAlly: Refuses to join the rest of the strike team during the survival test. It takes an entire third faction that shows up and begins hunting the recruits to make Hikari finally relent and join Terra in searching for others.
* AnythingYouCanDoICanDoBetter: Especially if Terra can do it.
* AttackAttackAttack: Hikari's combat style. She is aggressive to the point of exhausting herself and can't seem to back down.
* CantTakeCriticism: Which Roland exploits. Hikari is prone to lashing out when someone makes her angry enough.
* CompetitionFreak: Hikari's competitive nature seems partially driven by her inability to find a real challenge. [[spoiler:It is later revealed that this is because her father forbid her from competing with others since it would not be fair.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Almost as much as Terra. Hikari can match Terra in a battle of wills, but Terra has more stamina than Hikari.
* {{Foil}}: To Terra. Hikari is beautiful, skilled, and praised by others, but seems to have suffered from a traumatic past that makes her distance herself from close relationships. Terra's looks are average at best, she has no combat skills at all, and is actively ignored by others, but had a stable home life that provides her with emotional stability.
* FriendlyRivalry: [[spoiler:Eventually with Terra.]]
* HatesEveryoneEqually: Seems to dislike everyone around her. She intentionally drives others away.
* IneffectualLoner: While the best student at the academy, she runs into trouble when she cannot make allies during the part of the training that requires team building.
* JapanesePoliteness: Completely averted and even exploited by Hikari. Others expecting her to be polite are often shocked when Hikari blatantly insults them. She even wins a fight when her opponent wastes time being polite.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Hikari's interactions with Terra do slowly draw out her better traits.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: What she does to Vand. [[AssholeVictim Not that anyone had a problem with that.]]
* ParryingBullets: [[spoiler:Hikari does this to Hanns's troops when they start shooting bullets that can pierce her shieldwatch stasis shield.]]
* TheRival: Becomes one to Terra when Terra managed to get her shieldwatch working before Hikari.
* RivalsTeamUp: When Hikari and Terra realize they are being hunted during the survival test.
* SmugSuper: After she masters a shieldwatch power before Terra.
* SourOutsideSadInside: Hikari's standoffish nature is likely a defense mechanism due to trauma.
* WaifFu: Hikari is described as thin with a small frame yet she is able to bring Vand down to the ground in a matter of seconds.
* WorthyOpponent: What Hikari claims she is seeking. [[spoiler:She finds one in Terra. Eventually.]]
* WreckedWeapon: Hikari has one made be her father. She does not explain how it was broken.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hanns]]
!!Hanns Joachim Speer
->“There are those of us who choose not to build a political platform on hate and garbage science. Some of us want to build the party on more solid foundations.”

Hanns Joachim Speer is the leader of the Nazi Zeitmacht, a time traveling force based in 1940s Nazi Germany. He wholeheartedly believes in the Nazi ideology and is completely ignorant of their many atrocities. Despite being a Nazi, he is a fairly sympathetic character. Polite, well spoken, cunning, resourceful, and an underdog, Hanns could easily be the hero of a pulp science fiction story, if he just wasn't a Nazi. He serves as the primary antagonist of the first book.

----
* AFatherToHisMen: Tries hard to avoid casualties amongst his own forces. Is less concerned with the SS though and would gladly sacrifice them if it protected his own Zeitmacht troops.
* AffablyEvil: Hanns is pretty nice for a Nazi. In fact he seems rather bothered by everyone's assumption that he is a CardCarryingVillain.
* AntiVillain: [[SlidingScaleOfAntiVillains A villain in name only on the sliding scale]]. %%Not sure if I did this right.
* BadassNormal: In a universe full of threats so great that they could end time itself, Hanns manages to throw the entire Aeon Legion in to disarray with only his cunning, a few gadgets, and a little bit of social engineering. He even almost beats Alya during the first battle using nothing more than a wad of papers.
* BelievingTheirOwnLies: Thinks the Nazi party is great and refuses to see any evidence to the contrary even when it's right in front of him.
* BigBad: Of the first book.
* CombatPragmatist: One of the main reasons he is able to survive not one, but three battles with the hyper advanced Aeon Legion in spite of only having weapons from World War II.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: A strong case could be made that Hanns is a Deuteragonist. He is the only other character to get P.O.V. chapters in the book (minus Endymion in the epilogue). Like Terra, he is a NaiveNewcomer struggling to prove himself to his peers and an underdog. Both possess similar flaws and strengths and both use cunning to defeat their foes without restoring to tactics that could be considered despicable.
* FairForItsDay: Despite Hanns's ignorance of the Holocaust and other Nazi atrocities, he is strangely ahead of his time on eugenics often referring to it as “Garbage science.” %%Not sure if this trope applies. Could be this or values dissonance. Maybe just delete this example?
* GadgeteerGenius: Hanns invents a time machine pretty much by himself. Other characters comment upon his ability to work with extremely advanced technology despite being from the 1940s. [[spoiler:Hanns designs a bullet which is able to punch through the stasis shield of the Legion's shieldwatch. He uses it when he raids the Archives.]]
* IgnoredEpiphany: Hanns never sees himself as anything less than a hero.
* MugglePower: He does pretty good considering his weapons are from the 1940s and his enemies can use time itself as a weapon.
* MyCountryRightOrWrong: Hanns seems to believe that he can reform the Nazi Party into something better.
* ObliviouslyEvil: He seems unaware of the Holocaust and refuses to see the Nazi party in anything other than in a positive light.
* OmnidisciplinaryScientist: He seems skilled in both engineering and physics.
* PlayingNiceForNow: After Hanns is captured, he becomes Tartarus's model prisoner. [[spoiler:Mostly so he can get a chance to break into the Archives.]]
* SpeaksInShoutOuts: He quotes the Illiad several times. %%Not sure if this is the right trope.
* SmugSnake: Even when captured. [[spoiler:Justified since everything is going according to plan.]]
* VillainousValour: He knows the odds of beating the Legion are pretty slim. He nearly does anyway.
* WhatYearIsThis: When he first time travels to the present day.
* WideEyedIdealist: In regards to the Nazi Party. He assumes that he can change the Party's ideology.
* WorthyOpponent: How Alya sees Hanns mostly because Hanns is probably the first opponent to give Alya trouble in centuries. She is disappointed when Hanns throws the fight in their second battle.
* WouldNotShootACivilian: And would try to stop his own side from doing so.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kairos]]
!!Kairos
->“Who I was, am, or will be no longer matters. All that matters is that I complete my mission.”

Kairos was Alya's last squire before Terra. Kairos ascended through the Aeon Legion's ranks during the Faceless War and was largely responsible for their very narrow victory. During the waning years of the war, Kairos left her blade to Alya and then vanished. She has not been seen in nearly a century by the time the events of Labyrinth take place.

'''Given Kairos's importance to the narrative, her entry should be considered a WalkingSpoiler. Proceed at your own risk.'''

----
* TheAce: Kairos is consider the greatest of Alya's squires. Though Lycus describes her as more of a BrokenAce.
* APupilOfMineUntilHeTurnedToEvil: [[spoiler:She was Alya's greatest squire.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: She was this for the whole Legion. %%Example does not fit the trope?
* BigGood: Was this during the Faceless War. [[spoiler:Not so much when she returns and kills Lycus before declaring she will destroy Saturn City.]]
* BlackKnight: [[spoiler:Kairos even dresses in black to separate herself from the white uniforms of the Legion.]]
* BlackSwordsAreBetter: [[spoiler:Kairos's new blade is called Exile.]]
* ButNowIMustGo: Kairos left to journey to the Beginning of Time to find answers about the origins of the Faceless. She never returned.
* CameBackWrong: [[spoiler:When she did finally return, she was forever changed. She claimed to have been to both the Beginning and End of Time. Where she found her mask and new aeon edge is still a mystery.]]
* TheChosenOne: The Sybil say that Kairos had the greatest connection with fate that they had ever seen.
* TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt: [[spoiler:What Kairos claims she is trying to advert by murdering time travelers.]]
* EvilCounterpart: [[spoiler:To Terra.]]
* EvilSoundsDeep: [[spoiler:Kairos's Kalian style mask distorts her voice.]]
* TheFaceless: [[spoiler:The trope, not the creatures mentioned in the story. Kairos wears a mask that covers her face. Terra notes that it has a very Kalian design to it.]]
* FallenHero: [[spoiler:Now that she is trying to destroy the very place she once protected.]]
* {{Foil}}: To Terra again. Both are Alya's squires, but Kairos had an excess of talent and a strong connection with fate unlike Terra who struggled with every aspect of the academy and has no connection with fate at all.
* HerosEvilPredecessor: [[spoiler:Kairos was once Alya's squire just like Terra.]]
* HeroKiller: [[spoiler:Her first act upon her return is to kill Lycus Cerberus in a Trial of Blades. She also claims she will hunt down every last Legendary Blade and kill them to return the time they stole.]]
* KnightOfCerebus: [[spoiler:The very chapter Kairos returns is very dark in tone and her very first act upon returning is to kill one of the most powerful people in the Aeon Legion.]]
* KnightTemplar: [[spoiler:Kairos is willing to destroy the very city she fought to protect and even slaughter her own friends if that is what it takes to save the Edge of Time.]] %%Not sure if this example fits the trope?
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: [[spoiler:Kairos believes that by murdering time travelers, she can return the time they stole.]]
%%* NotSoDifferentRemark: To Terra. Many note how the two look similar to each other. %% Needs a rewrite and more details.
* ShadowArchetype: [[spoiler:To Terra. Terra's journey is symbolically represented as the transition from stone to steel. Kairos is constantly compared to steel herself, but she is often standing in the shadows of steel. Kairos is a shadow of steel, basically a shadow of Terra herself.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:Kairos claims she is trying to save the world.]]

[[/folder]]

!!Secondary Characters

[[folder:Lycus]]
!!Praetor Lycus Cerberus
->“[[spoiler:I am here to keep monsters like me out of the Aeon Legion. I am here to stop heroes and heroines from walking my path.]] I am the guardian of the gates. I let only the worthy pass.”

Praetor Lycus Cerberus is the current head of the Aeon Legion training program at the Aveum Academy and a Legendary Blade like Alya. He seems to have more than one personality. A fairly static character, Lycus does not change much throughout the story though his opinion of Terra does evolve somewhat. However, he ends up being one of the book's most complex characters. Given that he is one of the oldest lived Saturnians, he has a deeply complicated and flawed history that slowly gets revealed over the course of the story.

----
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:One of his personalities, specifically the Captain.]]
* AxCrazy: [[spoiler:The second of Lycus's personalities, the one he calls the beast, Cerberus, after his aeon edge.]]
* TheBerserker: His fighting style is this.
* BloodKnight: [[spoiler:What Lycus was in his past. It is actually what he still is, but he seems to be able to control his bloodlust better now.]]
* BrokenAce: One of the best of the Legendary Blades, [[spoiler:but he seems so consumed by remorse that he himself believes he is unworthy of redemption.]]
* TheBully: “I am the only bully allowed here.”
* TheChooserOfTheOne: Not to the same extent as Alya, but he does get final say as to who graduates the academy. However, he and Alya do agree that the most important quality for a recruit to have is a desire to be a hero.
* CurbStompBattle: 99.9% of Lycus's battles.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:He outright confesses to Terra that he is a war criminal and that Saturn City covered it up.]]
* GateGuardian: During the Trial of Storms he stands in Terra's away until she can prove she is worthy of joining the Aeon Legion.
* GuiltComplex: [[spoiler:This seems to be his core motive for becoming the head of the academy. His guilt over his bloody past drove him to take over the training of the academy in order to prevent someone like him from ever joining the Aeon Legion again.]]
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler:Happened after he killed a heroic Kalian soldier who protected civilians at the cost of his own life. The event set off his eventual realization of his status as a villain.]]
* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler:What Terra assumes at first is that Lycus is just a bullying headmaster of the academy. As time goes on she finds that others are deeply loyal to Lycus and that his harsh training is designed to weed out those who might become monsters like Lycus himself once was.]]
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:Kairos kills him near the end of the book.]]
* OnlyTheWorthyMayPass: [[spoiler:He tells this to Terra during the trial of storms in response to her question about why he is here.]]
* Really700YearsOld: He is likely about as old as Alya.
* SacrificialLion: [[spoiler:He dies by Kairos's hand at the end of the story.]]
* {{Sadist}}: He seems so at first. [[spoiler:He is a sadist, or at least partially. His Cerberus personality seems to delight in destruction, but he seems to be able to keep that part of himself in check.]]
* SeenItAll: Lycus rips apart Terra's preconceptions of being a ChosenOne. He is also surprisingly perceptive on 21st century American culture.
* SlasherSmile: He has a wolf like grin.
* SplitPersonality: He constantly shifts between his perceptive Lycus persona and his monstrous Cerberus persona. [[spoiler:And his third remorseful persona as the Captain.]]
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: His Cerberus side is TheBerserker.
* TallPoppySyndrome: He seems wary of others with a lot of potential. Granted this could be because he has lived long enough to see those who realize their potential squander it.
* ThresholdGuardians: Lycus is basically a threshold guardian with a backstory.
* TroubledBackstoryFlashback: A few of these are revealed through chapter epigraphs. Two are particularly notable. One details just how many Lycus has killed. [[spoiler:It's a lot.]] The other [[spoiler:confirms Lycus's story about his own guilt.]]
* TheUnfettered: [[spoiler:He was before his HeelRealization]]
* WouldHurtAChild: [[spoiler:He did before his HeelRealization.]]

[[folder:Zaid]]
!! Zaid Karim
->“Whatever you think you know about history or culture, toss it aside. Others wish for you to think that history is simple. It is not. Use your eyes and your mind. Come to your own conclusions, or rely on your assumptions and fail. It is your choice.”

A Mamluk from the late 1200s who fought in the battle of Ain Jalut. Zaid already attempted the training before so he knows his way around far better than the other characters. He trades to get Terra and Hikari on his team during one of the earlier weeks of training. His adaptable nature and natural leadership skills allow him to be more of a mentor to Terra than Alya.

----
* FireForgedFriends: With Terra.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:Zaid dies in the Labyrinth after the Manticore, Sero, kills him.]]
* LivingLieDetector: The only other character to see through Roland's lies. %%Again, I am not sure if this trope applies.
* TheMentor: More of a mentor to Terra than Alya.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: [[spoiler:He dies when the Manticore kills him in the Trial of the Beast.]]
* MrExposition: Zaid informs both Terra and Hikari of some of the tricks to survive the Aeon Legion's brutal training.
* MyGreatestFailure: His failure to protect his sultan from assassination.
* NiceGuy: One of the few Terra meets during the training.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Possibly the least interesting of Terra's companions. And probably the most stable.
* SacrificialLamb: [[spoiler:He dies in the Trial of the Beast likely to prove how dangerous the Labyrinth is.]]
* TheReliableOne: The most level headed of the recruits that Terra meets.
* TimeTravelEscape: He later tells Terra that he was a bodyguard who failed to protect his charge from a betrayal. He alone survived before he was offered a chance to join the Aeon Legion since history had written him off as dead.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Orion]]
!!Strategos Orion
->“Crashing End. No one ever listens to me!”

Another Legendary Blade and contemporary with Alya Silverwind and Lycus Cerberus. He commands what equates to the Aeon Legion's version of Black Operations.

----
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:Hinted at by Lycus. “Orion cultivated his own garden of corpses”.]]
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: With Alya.
* LivingLegend: He is also a member of the Legendary Blades.
* OnlySaneMan: He seems the most average, at least when compared to Alya or Lycus.
* Really700YearsOld: He is about as old as Alya.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Again, when compared to everyone else.

[[folder:Delphia]]
!!Delphia
->“People adore me because I am like a star. Beautiful, but distant and sculpted by people's imaginations rather than what is actually there.”

One of the first Saturnians that Terra meets when she arrives at Saturn City. Airy and aloof, Delphia is very indirect in her speech and mannerisms. Delphia is also stunningly beautiful and has a new boyfriend in every scene she is in. Despite being opposite of Terra in nearly every way, Delphia ends up becoming Terra's friend and guide to Saturn City and its culture. Unlike most Saturnians, Delphia is only 21 years old and one of the rare few to be born in Saturn City since it strictly regulates its population growth.

----
* {{Foil}}: To Terra. Delphia is gorgeous and never without a boyfriend. Terra is plain and has never even been kissed. Delphia is indirect and breaks down into tears with even the slightest hint of a confrontation. Terra is blunt and never cries.
* IndifferentBeauty: Delphia seems aware of her beauty, but never calls attention to it herself. She even seems to slightly resent that people see her beauty rather than her, but never directly blames her beauty.
* MinorFlawMajorBreakup: Delphia's boyfriends have a short shelf life. She has a new one in almost every scene she is in. Her reasons for breaking tend to be down right petty. “He stuttered a little, and his eyes were a rather off shade of blue.”
* OddFriendship: With Terra. Both see qualities in the other that they wished they possessed. Terra wants Delphia's grace and kind nature while Delphia wants Terra's boldness and ability to force others to recognize her.
* PerfectlyCromulentWord: Delphia loves these.
* PurpleProse: Due to her speech patterns being very indirect.

[[folder:Vand]]
!!Vand
->“These people are looking for a real soldier, a killer like me. You're just some fat little civvy from a cushy time in history. I'm a Helcian Shock Trooper, cybernetically augmented and bio engineered to be the perfect soldier. But you? I've pulled bugs out of my boots more intimidating than you.”

One of the other recruits Terra meets during the first day of training. He pushes Terra around and generally makes a nuisance of himself. Part of an elite group called the Shock Trooper Core, he bullies everyone around him. [[spoiler:He fails the first day and Lycus makes an example out of him.]]

----
* AssholeVictim: He's a bully and Hikari kicks him while he's down after the instructor turns his back.
* BullyingADragon: Hikari makes short work of Vand. Twice after their rematch. [[spoiler: Also trying to intimidate Lycus wasn't his smartest move. It is heavily hinted that Lycus knew this would happen and even set up Vand to fall in order to prove a point.]]
* TheBully: He steals Terra's coin, forms a gang of minions, and even tries to push around Hikari.
* GangOfBullies: He starts forming one right after the test at the mud pit.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: [[spoiler:After Lycus snaps Vand's spine in order to show the limitations of the shieldwatch's HealingFactor.]]
* VeryPunchableMan: As Hikari demonstrates.
