Born of Saxon nobility but raised a Dane, Uhtred grows up with a conflicted identity. A natural warrior, Uhtred is a leader of men, fearless, instinctive, and driven by a deep-seated need to reclaim his homeland of Bebbanburg, Northumbria. Quick-witted, impetuous with a taste for danger, he follows his gut and abhors the prayer, fasting, and obedience so precious to King Alfred. Like a Dane he believes life should be lived passionately and fully. He has charm, energy, charisma and an underlying sense of justice — qualities which make him very attractive to women. But his impulsiveness and irreverence sometimes land him in trouble.
----
* TheAce: He is an expert swordsman, a cunning strategist and a charismatic leader, which is why Alfred tries to retain his services for Wessex by any means necessary.
** Aethelwold considers Uhtred to be Alfred's most powerful supporter and Wessex's best defence against Danish invasion. [[spoiler:In Season 3, in preparation for his own bid to take the throne of Wessex, Aethelwold manipulates events to have Uhtred banished from Wessex and later tries to kill him before he can return to Wessex.]]
** Eadred mistook Uhtred for Guthred when they first met, attracted to his charisma, and later saw Uhtred's influence over Guthred as a threat to his own political power. Guthred himself noticed this, becoming somewhat jealous of Uhtred as a result.
** Skade realized that Uhtred has the best chance to conquer Wessex and unite a conquered England, should he decide to defect to the Danes. As a result, she tried her utmost to persuade Uhtred to make his own bid to become king of England with her as his queen, by either threats of curses or promises of power and sexual trysts. [[spoiler:This eventually resulted in her death, with Uhtred holding Skade responsible for his misery due to her supposed curse.]]
* AdaptationDyeJob: From blond in the books to dark-haired in the series.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: His treatment of his eldest son. In the books, he reacts to his conversion to Christianity by furiously disowning him, striking him and stripping him of his name. He's such a bad father that when his son sits by his bedside and it looks like it might die, Uhtred admits that calling him a great father is a lie. He's much gentler in his treatment here, treating his conversion more like a mildly annoying youth phase and trying to bond with him, even if the way he goes about it isn't the most endearing.
* ArrangedMarriage: With Mildrith. It initially seems like a PerfectlyArrangedMarriage until their drastically different world views cause misery for all involved.
* BadassCrew: He is the leader of a small, loyal band of hand-picked fighters who can each kill dozens of lesser warriors on their own. Uhtred sometimes leads these fighters on [[TheInfiltration infiltration missions]] unsuitable for conventional armies.
* BarbarianHero: While he's biologically a Saxon and ultimately on their side, he's considerably closer to the Danes culturally and this reflects in both his tactics, appearance and personality.
* BarbarianLonghair: It usually gets him mistaken for a Dane.
* BeardOfBarbarism: Fitting for someone who grew up a Dane warrior, Uhtred is never clean-shaven and an absolute monster in combat.
* BeenThereShapedHistory: Uhtred is essentially the main practical reason why the Saxons can even hope to take on the Danes without getting their asses torn apart by axes. Even moreso in the show, since he apparently is the one who taught the Saxons how to make a shield wall.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards Thyra. One of his main grudges against Kjartan and Sven is that they kidnapped and abused her and he takes considerable glee in punishing them for it.
%% * BigDamnHeroes
* BreakingSpeech: Gives one to Alfred after the Danes take over, though it is at least partially intended to get Alfred fighting.
* BreakTheBadass: In Season 2, Uhtred is sold into slavery and has to endure months of horrible, back-breaking labor and terrible living conditions. He even tries to escape once, but fails and ends up getting a close friend of his killed in a horrible way for the attempt. By the end of it he's so broken that when Ragnar the Younger finally saves him, he just breaks down into tears.
* BrutalHonesty: [[spoiler: After a furious Edward confronts Uhtred about his decision to declare Northumbria an [[TeamSwitzerland independent kingdom]], thwarting Edward's ambitions, Uhtred bluntly tells Edward he's proven himself too cruel and vicious to be the man needed to unite the kingdoms. Uhtred insists that Alfred's dream of a unified England will come to pass, but Edward isn't the man to make it happen]].
* CartwrightCurse: His love interests tend to meet premature ends, assuming they don't leave him first.
* {{Catchphrase}}: The opening narration invariably has him remind everyone that he is Uhtred, son on Uhtred. He is also fond of pointing out that destiny is all. He gets the former thrown back at him when Hild has to remind him who he is after he gets rescued from slavery in Series 2.
* CharacterDevelopment: After the AgeCut, he goes from brash young warrior only interested in achieving his revenge to steady and loyal servant of Alfred who is integral to his regaining his kingdom, something Alfred acknowledges, the two parting on good terms.
* ChildOfTwoWorlds: His most blatant character trait. Danes consider him a coward who makes himself a slave to a weak king and Saxons consider him to be a brutish, godless heathen who's nothing but a selfish barbarian. Yet he comes off as such an overall charismatic badass that even though he ultimately sides with the Saxons, his own men are typically made up of both peoples.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: He and Brida were close since childhood when they were taken by the Danes. They were expecting to get married but ultimately part ways mid-way through Season 1 when she can't handle the Saxon lifestyle.
* ClearMyName: The slaughter of Cornwallum's Christians and the murder of King Peredur? That's all him and Skorpa. He didn't go to Cynwuit and pillage the church there, as Odda claimed, though. The whole thing's for naught anyway when Guthrum and Ragnar conquer Winchester, though.
* ConflictingLoyalties: One of the driving motivations of Uhtred's character is his uncertainty of who he is; a Dane, or a Saxon. He was born a Saxon but raised a Dane. The ultimate reason why he chooses to be a Saxon is a combination of MyCountryRightOrWrong, a reluctant respect for Alfred and a serious desire not be known as his own tribe's destroyer.
* CoolSword: He has a sword easily recognizable as his own because of an amber pommel. Uhtred commissions a master smith to forge "a warrior's sword to last a lifetime" in Oxford. Uhtred asks the smith to set the amber pendant his father gifted to him at his birth into the pommel. The smith say he has "given her some beauty, but she is a tool, no more, no less." Uhtred is so pleased he agrees to pay the smith his original asking price, two pieces of silver more than agreed. Nun Hild refers to Uhtred's sword as "Serpent-Breath".
* DentedIron: It's evident that by ''Seven Kings Must Die'' that Uhtred's decades of battle damage are beginning to catch up to him. [[spoiler:He falls victim to an ambush by a mercenary that [[FailedASpotCheck he should have seen coming]] and gets knocked out, allowing the man to steal his sword. Later on in the Battle of Brunanburh, he struggles to keep up with his opponents and leaves himself open to a stabbing, an injury which is implied will eventually cost him his life.]]
* DisappearedDad: His service to Wessex kept him out of much of his children's lives, and Alfred openly notes Uhtred is not exactly a good father. In Season 5, Uhtred notes that he barely knows how to help his children with their problems, having been absent from their lives for so long.
* DontCallMeSir: Detests his wife calling him "my lord," to the point of being legitimately angry when she continues to do so.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Invoked in Season 3: he admits that while [[spoiler: he would have happily beaten Alfred when he took the latter hostage, he would never have murdered the king in cold blood]].
-->'''Uhtred''': [[spoiler: I would never be the man who killed Alfred, King of Saxons]].
-->'''Alfred''': [[spoiler: Killing me would have earned you a place [in history].]]
-->'''Uhtred''': [[spoiler: I would not want such a deed written]].
* GoalInLife: While he many smaller goals over the course of the series, his ultimate prize always remains the same: to reclaim his birthright as the lord of Bebbanburg.
* GoodOldWays: Downplayed as compared to the books, but still there. Uhtred is pretty much the ultimate proto-Saxon - a Saxon carved in the image of the original pagan warriors who invaded Britannia during the fall of Rome. In the books he and his family are proud of their pagan ancestors and Uhtred personally is disgusted with how adherence to Christianity has turned the Saxons from a [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy Proud Warrior Race]] into what he perceives as weaklings.
* GracefulLoser: Uhtred seems to accept that Alfred will never openly acknowledge the role Uhtred played in furthering his ambition of a united England.
-->'''Uhtred''': I've earned my place in these pages, but every lord is the hero of his own songs. I understand my absence.
* TheGreatestStoryNeverTold: This would seem to be Uhtred's fate. Despite all his contributions to Wessex, Uhtred's deeds are, so far, not recorded at all. It is implied that Alfred deliberately leaves out mentioning Uhtred out of disapproval for his Danish beliefs and out of personal pride.
-->'''Alfred''': It is a chronicle. The pages. It is a chronicle of Wessex. It will include my life as king... from the moment of my brother's death until now.
-->'''Uhtred''': Songs.
-->'''Alfred''': Of a kind, none of which will mention Uhtred of Bebbanburg.
-->'''Uhtred''': Men will remember what I have done.
-->'''Alfred''': But men die, as we all must. These pages will remain. The act of committing ink to parchment gives a deed permanence.
-->'''Uhtred''': If it is not burned.
-->'''Alfred''': If it is preserved, yes. And in one hundred years from now, learned people will read or recite what is written, and Alfred will appear. They will know nothing of the Lord Uhtred, nor of your loyalty, advice, bravery,courage... and insolence.
* HandicappedBadass: Puts up a ferocious fight against Sigefrid in the final battle of Season 2 despite having a quite severe concussion due to having been knocked down hard by Sigefrid's horse.
* HeroicBSoD
** Following his many months in slavery, the malnutrition that accompanied it, and Halig's death following an escape attempt that failed... Uhtred's will is utterly broken and he is a shell of his former self. The fact that he was once powerless over his fate and the man closest to him then devastates him. It's only the love of Hild that starts to bring him back from the edge of the abyss.
** In Season 4, [[spoiler:Uhtred falls into despair after Beocca dies during his botched attempt to reclaim Bebbanburg.]]
* HeroicSpirit: Having suffered the worst life can throw at him, including betrayal and the death of loved ones, Uhtred gradually learned how to pick himself up again with help from his close friends, especially Finan and Sihtric. As a result, Uhtred remains determined and focused even when it seems that the odds are against him. For most of his life, he sought to reclaim his lordship over Bebbanburg and finally did after ''many'' hardships and setbacks. [[spoiler:After Anlaf murdered almost all of the Bebbenburg castle staff, Uhtred managed to overcome his despair and press on in defending England from Anlaf's invasion.]]
* HonoraryUncle: Both of Alfred's children, Edward and Aethelflaed, consider Uhtred to be the closest thing they have to family outside their own. Within his circle of advisors, allies and commanders, Alfred would only trust Uhtred or Steapa with his children's well-being.
* IconicItem: Uhtred has his signature sword with amber pommel.
* IdiotHero: Uhtred is an excellent warrior and a skilled military commander. In every other respect he's a meathead who thinks with his sword or his other sword.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's often arrogant, brash and self-centred, but at the same time, he's capable of being very kind and affectionate, something that Mildrith sees, encourages and tries to convince other people of, and is dismayed when it appears to disappear. Despite the rift that develops between him and Mildrith, his declaration that he's going out drinking and whoring and later bringing back Iseult from Cornwalum, he stays faithful to Mildrith right up until [[spoiler: he finds his son's grave]] and he turns to Iseult for comfort.
* JerkassHasAPoint: [[spoiler: Although he clearly relishes getting to rub salt in Alfred's wounds after the fall of Winchester to Guthrum in Season 1, Uhtred is correct when he points out Alfred seriously screwed up letting Guthrum steal a march on him, and when Alfred tries to browbeat Uhtred into showing some respect, accurately retorts that Alfred is a king without a kingdom and has no authority to throw his weight around]].
-->'''Leofric''': [[spoiler: At the palace, lord, [the Danes] came from nowhere-]]
-->'''Uhtred''': [[spoiler: They came because they were allowed to. Where were your spies, your watchers? On their knees, no doubt.]]
-->'''Hild''': You should show respect.
-->'''Uhtred''': [[spoiler: Wessex allows its warriors to kill each other and spends too much time on its knees! And too much money on its churches]].
-->'''Alfred''': [[spoiler: [[HolierThanThou If Guthrum were Christian and not pagan, there would be no war]].]]
-->'''Uhtred''': [[spoiler: [[ShutUpHannibal But he's not]].]]
-->'''Alfred''': ''(angry)'' [[spoiler: You would do well to remember I am King!]]
-->'''Uhtred''': ''(scoffs)'' [[spoiler: King of what?]]
-->'''Hild''': [[spoiler: He is our King!]]
-->'''Uhtred''': [[spoiler: Like every kingdom before it, Wessex has fallen. He's Alfred, a man. King of nothing]].
* MadeASlave: As a boy, Uhtred was captured and made a slave to Ragnar the Elder, who started to [[LikeASonToMe treat Uhtred like a son]] after he saved Thyra from being raped by Sven Kjartansson. In Season 2, Uhtred was sentenced to slavery by Guthred and rescued several months later by Ragnar Ragnarson. [[spoiler:In Season 3, Skade all but claimed to own Uhtred through her curse, which resulted in her death once Uhtred learned how to undo it.]]
* MasterSwordsman: The only character better with a sword than Uhtred is Leofric.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: Basically every mentor and paternal figure he has ends up dead once they've taught him everything they can.
* MirrorCharacter:: To Alfred. Both are ruthless, both are steadfast in their beliefs and singleminded in their pursuit of their goals, and both are GoodParents. Both also have a weakness for beautiful women who aren't their wives.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast:
** Is known to other Saxons as Uhtred the Godless, given his fierce paganism and disgust for Christianity.
--->'''Uhtred:''' (to Mildreth) No priest will ever take my son and drown him under water, and whisper lies and deceit in his ears. He will be pagan like his father.
** The Danes refer to him as [[RedBaron Dane Slayer]], given how many of them he's killed.
* {{Naytheist}}: Uhtred ''despises'' both Christianity and the Christian god with a fury to eclipse that of ten thousand suns in supernova. Even moreso, he despises what Christianity has done to the Saxons and feels that a return to their ancestral gods (Wodin, Donar, Seaxnot) is the only thing that can restore their strength as warriors. This is one of the reasons he's so sympathetic to the Danes, particularly in the books where Uhtred genuinely believed that the Danes were there to lead to the Saxons back to their old gods. Also, see above.
-->'''Beocca:''' You must now kiss the cross, and lay face down.
-->'''Uhtred:''' (''seething'') ''Kiss my arse. You and your god.''
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: In Season 4, [[spoiler: Uhtred refuses to kill Brida, despite her [[BetterToDieThanBeKilled pleading for it]] after the Danish defeat at Tettenhall and learning [[DespairEventHorizon Cnut was responsible for Ragnar's murder]] because Uhtred cannot bear to lose another person he care about so soon after Beocca's death. Brida's time in captivity as [[MadeASlave a Welsh slave]] not only intensifies her loathing of the Saxons but drives her to declare herself Uhtred's mortal enemy]].
-->'''Uhtred''': [[spoiler: I spared your life!]]
-->'''Brida''': [[spoiler: You ''destroyed'' my life!]]
* NotAllowedToGrowOld: Based on the dates of historical events, nearly 50 years pass in story between Season 1 (when Uhtred was presumably in his late teens) and Season 5, but Uhtred perpetually looks and fights like a fit man in his 30s.
* OneManArmy: He's badass enough normally, but when his buttons are pushed, he effectively destroys the entire Danish army by breaking the shield wall and killing pretty much everyone within reach, allowing the Saxon army to follow him through the hole.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: [[spoiler: His first child by Mildrith dies in infancy]].
* ParentalFavouritism: Downplayed, as he clearly loves both his children, but he slightly favours his daughter Stiorra for [[GoodOldWays remaining true to her Danish roots]] over his son Uhtred, who has embraced Christianity.
* PetTheDog: For all the antipathy between them, Uhtred does his best to help Alfred through his HeroicBSOD [[spoiler: following Guthrum's conquest of Winchester and the ongoing illness of Alfred's son]].
-->'''Alfred''': God is punishing me.
-->'''Uhtred''': For what?
-->'''Alfred''': [[spoiler: For Aethelwold, for stealing his crown-]]
-->'''Uhtred''': [[spoiler: Aethelwold is a fool, he could never be king]]. Your god is ''testing'' you.
** Despite his [[TeethClenchedTeamwork cold interactions with Alfred's wife Aelswith]] due to her [[TheFundamentalist views on pagans]], Uhtred is relatively polite and gentle towards her when he arrives at Winchester with news of Aethelflaed's capture, relating to her worry as a parent.
** During the battle to retake Eoforwic in Season 5, [[spoiler: despite his hatred and enmity towards Brida, Uhtred still tries to help save her daughter from falling from a church spire]].
* ReligiousBruiser: He is a very faithful pagan and still staunchly follows the Norse Gods long after he's firmly sided with the Saxons.
* {{Ronin}}: Following the death of Ragnar the Elder, he is effectively this, and the rest of the series is devoted to his trying to find a new place and a new master.
* RousingSpeech: Gives one in the final episode of Season 5 to [[spoiler: convince Stiorra and her Danish outcasts to join him in turning the tide of the Siege of Bebbanburg with the promise as Lord of Bebbanburg, he will make Northumbria a place where Danes and Saxons can live in peace]].
-->'''Stiorra''': [[spoiler: When I married Sigtryggr, I chose his kin over my own]].
-->'''Uhtred''': [[spoiler: [[ArmorPiercingResponse Sigtryggr would support me now, you know this]]. He would not ask you to watch your brother die and turn away.]]
-->'''Wolland''': [[spoiler: No Danes should die for Saxons, not after all they have done to us]].
-->'''Uhtred''': You have suffered at the hands of Saxon kings, I know this.
-->'''Aelswith''': [[spoiler: I promise, do this and the Danes will be rewarded]].
-->'''Stiorra''': You cannot offer me anything!
-->'''Uhtred''': She cannot, itt is true. But I can, for I speak to you as a man who has lived among you. Your gods are my gods. I was born a Saxon but raised a Dane. For years that divided me, but perhaps the Gods have led us all here! For I will offer you a bargain. I ask you to fight now for me and for Northumbria, and if we take these lands, we will be taking them for Saxons ''and'' for Danes. Follow me and all Danes will live in peace here. I swear this to you! Danes will not be hunted, nor live in forests! You will have lands and homes! And I ask you not to do this for Saxons. Do it for what your forebears came here, for the reason they risked their lives and crossed the seas...[[FightingForAHomeland to make a homeland]]. Follow me and this I swear. You have my word... as a Saxon and as a Dane!
* TheStrategist: He is the one who formulates strategies to enable Wessex's army to hold off the Danes, who have the advantage in numbers. In addition to understanding how Danes think, Uhtred considers many aspects when planning for battles, including the gathering of information through scouts and spies (usually Sihtric), the use of advantageous terrain and the battlefield positioning of soldiers. He is also skilled in the use of deceptions and distractions to make his enemies let their guard down.
* TragicKeepsake: Two actually, one each from his Saxon birth father and his Dane adopted father. The former is a perfectly round amber jewel inlaid with various insects. He has this put in as a pommel for his signature longsword. The latter is a necklace of Thor's hammer. [[spoiler: He buries this into Ragnar the Younger's grave in Season 3.]]
* TookALevelInJerkass: Being humiliated with the enforced penance after having the credit for Ubba's killing stolen by the craven Odda the Younger drives him down a darker path.
* UncertainDoom: [[spoiler:The last shot we see of Uhtred in ''Seven Kings Must Die'' is of him literally standing between the land of the living and Valhalla, deciding whether to hold on a bit longer for his living friends or join Brida in Valhalla. Given the grievous injuries he sustained in the Battle of Brunanburh, his lifelong goal of reclaiming his birthright achieved, and his advanced age, it's inevitable, just never shown ''when''.]]
* UnstoppableRage: When [[spoiler: Skorpa]] pulls a DecapitationPresentation with [[spoiler: Iseult's]] head, Uhtred goes absolutely berserk, vaulting over the shield wall and singlehandedly [[spoiler: breaking it - effectively ''destroying the army'' -]] and chasing down the mounted [[spoiler: Skorpa]] (who admittedly turns to face him), he [[spoiler: spears him with a spear Father Beocca throws to him]].
** In Season 4, after [[spoiler: Wihtgar kills Beocca, Uhtred goes berserk and starts carving through his cousin's men like butter, [[OhCrap clearly rattling Wihtgar]], and Finan has to effectively drag Uhtred out of Bebbanburg, knowing it's a battle they can't win.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: Uhtred is justifiably outraged when he learns [[spoiler: Edward plans to split Northumbria in two for a peace deal with King Constantin, with Bebbanburg amongst the lands given to the Scots]].
-->'''Uhtred''': [[spoiler: You would split Northumbria?! Those are lands my forebears died for! ''Saxon'' lands!]]
* WouldNotHurtAChild: Even when Cnut's men come looking for a fight, Uhtred simply fakes the death of the eldest rather than kill him for real and once that is done he releases both boys from captivity.
** Despite his grudge with [[spoiler: Brida in Season 5, when he sees her daughter in danger, Uhtred tries to save the girl and is clearly horrified when she falls to her death]].

Guthred’s headstrong and passionate sister. Guthred means to marry her to someone for political gain, but she and Uhtred have other ideas. 149----
* AdaptationNameChange: Or rather Lack of Name Change. In the books, he renames himself Judas as an AppropriatedAppellation after Uhtred strips him of his birth name for becoming a Christian. Since Uhtred is kinder to him here, he stays Young Uhtred.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachother: While he and Uhtred's relationship is strained, they do have several scenes showing they truly care about one another.
* CowardlyLion: While he isn't a warrior like his father or sister, he's braver than he seems. [[spoiler:He rather defiantly announces his identity to his great-uncle Aelfric and later joins the fight at Winchester.]]

* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: Has no interest in war and fighting, and has fervently embraced the Christianity his father still treats with disdain.

* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler: Her and her followers arriving at Bebbanburg saves Edward's forces from being driven off the cliffside, turning the tide of the battle in their favor.]]

* HappilyMarried: With Sigtryggr in Season 5, with the two of them being one of the most mutually loving and stable relationships in the show.
* TheHighQueen: Of Eoferwic in Season 5. She is beloved by her people and serves as one of her husbands primary advisors. [[spoiler: Her ability to inspire their loyalty gets to the point most of the citizens would willingly die rather then give her up to Brida. This loyalty continues after Sigtryggr is executed and Edward annexes it, with many following her into exile.]]
* ItsPersonal: [[spoiler: Very much with Brida, particularly after Brida and her warrior cultists invade Eoforwic and kill many of Stiorra's friends and servants]].
* LikeParentLikeChild: Given the way she acts and thinks, if she had been born a boy, Uhtred would have found her much more to his liking than his actual heir.
* AMatchMadeInStockholm: [[spoiler: She and Sigtryggr bond after he captures her due to their similar outlooks. She ultimately decides to willingly go with him to Northumbria in search of a life more suited to her.]]
* PluckyGirl: Like her father, she hates being tied down and wants freedom.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: [[spoiler: After Sigtryggr's death at Edward's command, she refuses to swear allegiance to the man who killed her husband, even to retain her status as mistress of Eoforwic, preferring to go into exile with many of her former subjects rather than be Edward's vassals]].
** [[spoiler: In the final battle of Season 5, she is initially prepared to withdraw from the siege of Bebbanburg, despite having brought reinforcements to aid her father, when she sees Edward trapped by Constantin's counterattack, insisting the battle is lost and [[AMotherToHerMen she won't order her men to die fighting for their Saxon persecutors]]. She only relents when Uhtred replies [[BigSisterInstinct her brother and Aethelstan are on the battlefield]], and that as Lord of Bebbanburg, he will make Northumbria a place where Danes can live free of persecution]].
* StayInTheKitchen: Completely subverted: Stiorra insists she won't fall into the trap of becoming a wife and mother as she values her freedom too much. She does eventually break this vow, but only because she finds a husband who respects this individualism and treats her as an equal.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She's the spitting image of her mother.

Halig earned his stripes with Uhtred at the battle of Ethandun, and has been his faithful servant ever since. Trusting, light-hearted, and likeable, Halig is also brave and fiercely loyal, and will follow Uhtred at the cost of all else.
----
* BeardOfSorrow: He grows a formidable beard during his and Uhtred's time as slaves.
* CanonForeigner: He's nowhere to be found in the source material.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: He's tied to the keel of a ship while it's at sea. Ouch.
* DueToTheDead: Ragnar the Younger assures Uhtred that Halig has been buried as befitting a warrior.
* MadeASlave: Thanks to Guthred, he ends up a slave alongside Uhtred.
* SacrificialLion: He shows up towards the end of Season 1, and is given characterization throughout the start of Season 2, but he primarily exists so that he can die horribly and push Uhtred close to the DespairEventHorizon.
* ServileSnarker: He's not above trading barbs with Uhtred but is loyal above all.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Uhtred and Alfred.

Uhtred meets Finan in dire circumstances, and they forge a bond that will keep them fighting at each other’s side for a lifetime. A former warrior of Ireland, Finan’s swordskill is as nearly as quick as his wit, and Uhtred learns to rely on Finan for his counsel, battle strategy, and friendship.
----
* BriefAccentImitation: Puts on a Scottish accent to pretend to be one of Constantin's men when Wihtgar catches him and Sihtric snooping around Bebbanburg. (Funnily enough Mark Rowley is Scottish by birth).
* BrosBeforeHoes: Averted in Season 5 [[spoiler: when defending Runcorn he sees Osferth struggling surrounded by enemies and his wife in great danger. He chooses to protect his wife first.]]
* CombatPragmatist: His solution to the problem of being outnumbered by the brothers and their army? Kill them in their sleep.
* DeadpanSnarker: Finan is quick with a joke to lighten the mood or just get through a bad situation. Being a slave meant he had to develop a pretty sardonic sense of humor.
* FightingIrish: As he puts it he "loves a fight as much as the next idiot."
* HappilyMarried: To [[HairOfGoldHeartOfGold Ingrith]], a Danish woman he met between Season 4 and 5.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: He's Uhtred's closest companion and Ragnar compares their bond to his and Uhtred's brotherhood after the pair are liberated from slavery. [[spoiler: He also is the one to comfort Uhtred after Beocca's death and urge his son to reconcile with him.]]
* IronicEcho: "Pull!" Finan [[TranquilFury snarls this]] at Sverri, the sadistic slaver who kept him and Uhtred (it being Sverri's command of choice while forcing them to row) while [[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice driving a sword through the slaver's throat]].
* ItsAllMyFault: [[spoiler: Finan blames himself for failing to save Osferth in Season 5, even though everyone tells him it wasn't his fault.]]
* ItsPersonal: [[spoiler: After learning Aethelhelm was behind the attack on Runcorn that got Osferth and so many others killed, Finan wants the old bastard dead not soon enough. Sihtric has to personally hold him back from trying to take on Aethelhelm's personal guard singlehandedly.]]
* HonoraryUncle: To Uhtred and Sihtric’s children with Sihtric even calling him “Uncle Finan” at one point.
* TheLancer: He develops into this for Uhtred, becoming among his most-trusted and constant companions.
* OnlySaneMan: He seems to become this during Season 3.
* RealMenLoveJesus: Finan is a devoted Christian and prays before a battle in Season 4. He's also nearly as formidable a badass as Uhtred.
* ScrewYourUltimatum: When facing a LastStand, Finan makes his thoughts ''very'' clear on Haesten's offer of surrender.
-->'''Haesten''': Give up Uhtred and the rest of you will live! All I want is the Dane Slayer!
-->'''Finan''': What you will get, Haesten, is my sword up your hairy arse!
* ServileSnarker: He's loyal to Uhtred but still throws plenty of snark. In Season 4, he jokingly asks if Uhtred will ever be able to pay him and the others for their service.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Finan is utterly ''terrified'' of disease, saying he has seen men strong in the morning and dead by nightfall from sickness. When disease strikes Mercia in season four, Finan actually told Uhtred that they abandon the children--a group which included Uhtred's son and daughter--just to better escape the sickness quicker. Later when the option is either swim through a marsh filled with corpses of the diseased or fight the Mercian Guards, Finan eagerly takes fighting the Mercians over risking exposure.
* WouldHitAGirl: Finan punches out a woman of Sigefrid's during Uhtred's raid on the brothers' camp to stop her raising the alarm.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Clapa and Sihtric.

An illegitimate son of Kjartan, he defects by swearing an oath to Uhtred. Keen to turn his back on his roots, he is tireless in his efforts to serve Uhtred, and becomes one of his most faithful men. With striking Danish looks, Sihtric makes a cunning spy.
----
* AntagonisticOffspring: He abandons his father Kjartan to serve Uhtred, his ArchEnemy. His relationship with Kjartan isn't explored much, but it seems unlikely he was a particularly good father considering how he doesn't seem to care about Sithric's fate.
* BloodKnight: To a degree; he's clearly gleeful when Uhtred tells him they're marching to battle against Bloodhair.
-->'''Uhtred''': Ready yourselves and the horses. We leave before nightfall.
-->'''Sihtric''': For where?
-->'''Uhtred''': For battle.
-->'''Sihtric''': And not before time. ''[his wife punches his shoulder]'' [[DefensiveWhat What?!]] I'm a warrior.
* ChildByRape: Invoked: Sihtric mentions his mother was a servant girl Kjartan forced himself on.
* HappilyMarried: To a serving woman in Winchester: Uhtred is initially reluctant to give his blessing, considering her a GoldDigger but relents.
* HeroicBastard: An illegitimate child and much nicer than his father or half-brother.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: Kjartan betrayed Ragnar while Sihtric is totally loyal to Uhtred's cause.
* MercyKill: Slits the throat of a dying plague victim in Season 4.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler: In Season 5, before heading into Bebbanburg to confront Wihtgar, Uhtred charges Sihtric with overpowering and capturing Constantin's nephew and chief lieutenant so they can use him as leverage in negotiations. Sihtric succeeds in the task]].
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Becoming disillusioned with Uhtred and convinced his lord is losing his mind thanks to Skade's curse, Sihtric leaves Uhtred with the help of Dagfinn, Haesten's [[TheDragon right-hand man]]. Ultimately subverted as he remains loyal to Uhtred; Sihtric's defection was planned between them to put a spy in Haesten and Cnut's camp.
* TheSneakyGuy: Of Uhtred's men, he is the one most often used for stealth and espionage.
* ThoseTwoGuys: He and Finan are rarely seen without one another.
* UndyingLoyalty: He has this to Uhtred for sparing his life and giving him a chance to prove himself.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Finan.

The nephew of Leofric, who fell at the battle of Ethandun. An illegitimate son of King Alfred (who had a fling with Leofric's sister in his youth), as a royal bastard he is destined to live out a quiet life in the church. However, Osferth has ambitions to be a warrior and though he isn’t a natural fighter, Uhtred gives him a chance to prove that he possesses the courage of his late uncle, who was Uhtred’s dearest friend and bravest comrade in battle.
----
* BastardAngst: Downplayed: he seems quite comfortable with being a royal bastard, even cracking jokes to Aethelstan, his half-brother's bastard son about their shared nature. He is still somewhat insecure about being an outsider in his own family as he excuses himself when his half-siblings and him end up sharing a table.
-->'''Osferth''': ''[to Aethelstan]'' Welcome to the bastard life, boy!
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: The reason for Osferth's UndyingLoyalty to Uhtred and particularly Gisela.
* CarryABigStick: He uses a mace in combat.
* CharacterDevelopment: Osferth goes through quite a personal transformation, beginning as a meek if well-meaning coward who can barely wield a sword and gradually transforming into a steadfast and courageous ally who's formidable in combat.
* ChickMagnet: His friends have to stop two women from fighting over him in Season 5. Their reactions indicate this isn’t the first time this has happened.
* CoolUncle: His half-nephew Aethelstan and him get along well and bond over being bastard sons of kings.
* DeadpanSnarker:
-->'''Finan''': If you die, Baby Monk, I'll kill you myself!
-->'''Osferth''': Very well. I'll try not to.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: [[spoiler: Is mortally wounded defending Runcorn's people from Saxon bigots stirred up by Aethelhelm and dies in Finan's arms]].
* EmbarrassingNickname: Finan nicknames him "Baby Monk". At times, it also doubles as an AffectionateNickname.
* MoralityPet: Definitely one to Uhtred, who also mentions he was something of one to Gisela as well.
* NiceGuy: Osferth is always pretty friendly.
* OhCrap: His reaction to seeing [[spoiler: Heasten's entire army leaving Beamfleot to kill Uhtred and his retinue]].
* PetTheDog: Uhtred thanks Osferth when he offers to pray for Gisela after she dies. Finan and Uhtred also compliment him after he fights for the first time. Osferth also does this for Uhtred when he is conflicted after his killing of Skade, assuring Uhtred that given [[TheVamp how evil she was]], [[IDidWhatIHadToDo killing her was an act of necessity]].
* TheResenter: Downplayed, but in Season 3, he tends to make excuses to leave the scene when his half-brother Edward appears.
* TookALevelInBadass: Finds his courage and fights to defend his lord and comrades when it seems they're making a LastStand while surrounded by Haesten's men.
