* IncestSubtext: Between Iris and her father, in an abusive, one-sided way. There’s lots of talk about Iris “taking her mother’s role,” and scenes where Mr. Parker gets uncomfortably close to her— he even kisses her on the lips near the end of the movie.
** There’s also a ''lot'' of subtext between siblings Julián and Sabina in the original movie, again in a one-sided way.

* CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot: If the family had [[spoiler:boiled and ground the bones through the years]], there wouldn't have been anything for Doc Barrow to find.

* DomesticAbuser: Mr. Parker was probably one of these, seeing as no sane woman would agree to do what was expected of his wife.

* FridgeHorror: In the end, Rose is shown still holding the diary that outlines the cannibalism tradition. This may imply that she and Iris plan to continue it.
** Conversely, she may just be keeping it as a memento from the past.
** Another example is the fact that Iris and/or Rose have a decent chance of contracting Kuru disease, since they [[spoiler:ate the flesh of someone infected with it (their dad)]]. [[{{FromBadToWorse}} Also, it's incurable.]]
*** Fortunately for the girls, kuru is mostly present in the brain tissue, not the muscle.

* Squick: Watching Iris and Rose [[spoiler:eat their father alive]] is pretty repulsive.
