** A problem that many had with previous episodes featuring dragons (especially ''[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E21DragonQuest Dragon Quest]]'') was that all of them aside from Spike were jerks. ** Pretty much the first issue. The art and plot leave much to be desired. The humor is not as good as one would expect from an issue featuring Pinkie Pie. There was no bonding moment between Aoplejack and Pinkie in spite of being the stars of the issue. And there is a lot of ponies that act more like a FlatCharacter, rather than having a good personality to offer.

The only thing that stands out is Marine Sandwich being an UnintentionallySympathetic DesignatedVillain, but even that's largely the result of unnecessary WhatTheHellTownspeople moments.

* UnintentionallySympathetic:
** All of the things that happened to Marine Sandwich would be comedy gold...if she didn't deserve it on the first place. Applejack takes her spot in the contest and later tries to lose on purpose, which would ruin Marine Sandwich's reputation. Both of her attempts to recover her spot end up in humiliation, leading to her entering a rampage in the contest that ends with her being frozen in icing. From her first appearance to the ending, she was more of a ChewToy than a villain. You know an issue sucks when you feel more sympathy for the villain rather than the heroes.

* TheyJustDidntCare: The colorist for Issue #18 colors Rainbow Dash's signature rainbow trail differently from the show. This would be excusable as artistic license, except that the colorist isn't even internally consistent; the colors in the trail change every panel, and sometimes they aren't even different colors, such as numerous panels where the streak is colored in different orange-yellow gradients.

* JerkassWoobie: Marine Sandwich may be a MadArtist, but she did earn her right to compete, only for Applejack to steal her spot (albeit accidentally) and try to purposely lose, which would have ruined her reputation. Both of her attempts to reclaim her spot lead to humiliation and GettingTheBoot (from two unicorn guards who buck her with their hind legs at the same time rather than use their magic to dispose of her in a more dignified manner) and this lead to a DespairEventHorizon. She does attack the competition and ends up frozen by her own icing, but her reputation is probably destroyed beyond repair. It's hard not to sympathize with her after what she's been through.

It doesn't help that the author later openly admitted that he wrote the story specifically to call out ''Dragon Quest'' for what he claimed was a "toxic" for saying all members of a particular race are evil except for one member who was raised by a different race.
