* TearJerker: At the end of the film we see the real-existing Italian military memorial of El Alamein, with walls of names of fallen soldiers among other walls filled with 'Ignoto' (Unknown).
** At a certain point a man is seen from behind, while observing the walls. Looking closely, among the names are De Vita and Spagna. The scene must have been made in a studio, because the characters are purely invented, and those names don't appear in the memorial.

* NightmareFuel: The whole film, thanks to its vivid representation of the horrors of war. Even the few funny moments (such as the scene where the soldiers tried to eat Mussolini's horse) are uneasy (they tried to eat Mussolini's horse because they were starving, and the horse was there because Mussolini had no idea that he wouldn't have the chance to enter Alexandria on it)... And then, to drive it home, there's the night battle.

* GeniusBonus: The Subversion of the InfiniteSupplies trope is further shown by giving the Italian soldiers a number of weapons they shouldn't actually have, like the Karabiner 98k rifle (German), the Granatwerfer 34 mortar (German again. Differently from the 98k, this one actually uses the same ammo as the Italian ones, so at least they won't have to get the rounds from the Germans) and the Carcano Mod. 91 rifle (Italian but outdated and theorically phased out. Serra starting out with one not converted into the WWII-issue 91/38 is quite indicative of the supply situation).
