*** While it's ambiguous in the episode itself if the Master is the actual Grigori Rasputin or is simply pretending to be him, the original script reveals that he was supposed to be the real deal, adding another layer of humour since the Master was dancing to a song that turned out to have been written about ''him''.

* ShockingMoments: It had been previously announced that Creator/NcutiGatwa would be taking over from Creator/JodieWhittaker, so to see her regenerate into Creator/DavidTennant once again is quite a major shock. However, people had theorized this beforehand, since the specials in 2023 were reported on prior to this episode airing, and filming shots showed Tennant and not Gatwa, but it wasn't yet known whether Whittaker would de-regenerate into Tennant, if the specials would be flashbacks of previously unknown adventures, or if it would involve the "clone" of the Tenth Doctor created from his spare hand. The fact Tennant was seen with a different outfit and screwdriver and was standing outside of Thirteen's TARDIS helped add fuel to the fire. Official sources have been referring to Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and Gatwa as the Fifteenth.

* WordOfGod: At the Companions Anonymous meeting, there's an empty chair between Jo and Tegan with a laptop on it. WordOfGod is that it's for Polly, because Anneke Wills had to pull out of shooting late on, and the laptop was added to imply Polly was using Zoom to attend the meeting.

* FridgeBrilliance:
** The fragment of the Fifth Doctor mentions that passing through regeneration, there's no going back to a previous form. Of course, we already knew there were caveats to that, with [[Recap/DoctorWhoS30E13JourneysEnd the Tenth Doctor "aborting" a regeneration]] (later revealed [[Recap/DoctorWho2013CSTheTimeOfTheDoctor to have been an actual regeneration where he kept his form]]), and [[Recap/DoctorWho50thASTheDayOfTheDoctor the Fourth Doctor implicitly returning as the future Curator]]. At the end of the episode, Thirteen seems to regenerate back into Ten, likely related to the forced de-generation from the Master back to Thirteen.
** The fragment of the Eighth Doctor also mentions that he doesn't do robes, hence being the only fragment not wearing one. The robes the other Doctors are wearing actually look vaguely similar to the robe worn by the Master in [[Recap/DoctorWhoTVMTheTVMovie the TV movie]]. Couple that with how the end of the Eighth Doctor's life saw the beginning of the Time War, and it becomes very reasonable that he wouldn't fancy robes like the kind worn by Gallifreyan elites during a truly horrific event.
** With the knowledge of the Cyberium in his head, of course the Master would know how to make a working clone of Ashad and more [=CyberMasters=].
** The Master's powers, specifically inhuman physiology and hypnosis, mesh rather neatly with Rasputin's legend -- even if it's not clear in-universe where Rasputin ends and the Master begins.
* FridgeHorror: Tegan trying to climb down a long, long ladder and almost slipping is terrifying on its own. But it gets even worse when you remember that she had to watch a [[Creator/TomBaker version of the Doctor]] die by [[Recap/DoctorWhoS18E7Logopolis falling off like that]]. No wonder she didn't want to jump off a building with Ace!

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation:
** The Master expressing contempt for the Brigadier, given how it was implied he had a [[VillainRespect certain amount of respect]] for him back in the Pertwee era. Genuine contempt? A lie to troll Kate? Or is he just bitter from [[Recap/DoctorWhoS34E12DeathInHeaven being shot in the back when he was Missy]] (especially since he'd almost forced the Doctor to shoot him)? [[Recap/DoctorWho20thASTheFiveDoctors Getting punched in the face]] probably didn't help his opinion of the Brig either.
** The Doctor's look of horror during the "Ra Ra Rasputin" scene. Horror at the prospect of forced regeneration (especially since she can probably deduce what the Master's plan is), horror at the Master's terrible dance moves, or a bit of both?
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMoment: Ace. Dalek. '''Baseball bat.''' Round two. A call-back to THE Moment of Awesome.

* EvilIsSexy: Not that Creator/SachaDhawan isn't a good-looking person to begin with, but there are those who feel the brief appearance of his Master having had a chance to shave is ''extremely'' good-looking.

** The Master, having impersonated Grigori Rasputin, starts dancing to Music/BoneyM's "Rasputin" while the Doctor, the Daleks, and the Cybermen look on in confusion, and is funny for just how ''bizarre'' it is. One of the Cybermen and one of the Daleks surrounding the Master just look at one another in utter and total disbelief. And even though neither of them have expressions, the unspoken thought of "What the hell is happening?!?; are you seeing what I'm seeing?!" is unmistakeable.
** While it's ambiguous in the episode itself if the Master is the actual Grigori Rasputin or is simply pretending to be him, the original script reveals that he was supposed to be the real deal, adding another layer of humour since the Master was dancing to a song that turned out to have been written about ''him''.
** The Doctor, played by none other than ''David Tennant'' once again, saying what everybody watching was thinking by saying "What?" in succession, each one louder and more confused than the last.

** The return of the previous companions, but most of all Ian Chesterton, one of the original companions all the way back from [[Recap/DoctorWhoS1E1AnUnearthlyChild the very beginning to the franchise]]. After not appearing on the TV series in ''57 years'' and his actor being almost '''a century old''', he finally makes an appearance in Graham's support group.

When Tegan angrily challenges him about how he seemingly moves on leaving every Companion behind, the Fifth Doctor responds "I never forgot ANY of you!" and when he guesses at why Tegan is terrified of facing the Cybermen hunting her, says one name. "Adric." He ''hadn't'' forgotten any of them...
* IKnewIt: After Creator/DavidTennant's return for the 60th Anniversary was announced, many fans theorized that he wasn't coming back as the Tenth Doctor, but was going to play a new Doctor between Creator/JodieWhittaker and Creator/NcutiGatwa's incarnations. The speculation only intensified when location filming photos were revealed and Tennant was spotted in a brand new outfit that was similar to but noticeably different from Ten's, along with what appeared to be a new sonic screwdriver, while Gatwa was nowhere to be seen on set. This theory was first confirmed by a ContentLeak of this episode's ending before its official airing solidified it.

** The Doctor meeting mental manifestations of their past selves during regeneration has happened before; in the fortieth anniversary audio "[[Recap/BigFinishDoctorWho050Zagreus Zagreus]]", the Eighth Doctor spoke with his immediate three predecessors after he was left in a near-death state. ** The introduction of the "Edge of Existence", aka the Doctor's mindscape where she interacts with echoes of her past incarnations, seems to set up a FightingFromTheInside scenario in order for her to retake her body from the Master, kinda how she did in "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS38E10TheTimelessChildren The Timeless Children]]" to escape the Matrix. * BrokenBase: Fans are divided on the episode. Either it's a fun romp with the return of the past companions and Doctors that has some heartwarming moments with them that ends the Chibnall/Whittaker era on a high note, or it's a nostalgia-bait mess that's too fast-paced, suffers from a messy plot that makes no sense, the Master suffers from weak characterization and comes off more like a Joker wannabe, the 13th Doctor has very little to do in her own send-off story, and other problems. Even with some of the better moments taken into account, it doesn't make the episode better for some people.

However, people had theorized this beforehand, since the specials in 2023 were reported on prior to this episode airing, and filming shots showed Tennant and not Gatwa, but it wasn't yet known whether Whittaker would de-regenerate into Tennant, if the specials would be flashbacks of previously-unknown adventures, or if it would involve the "clone" of the Tenth Doctor created from his spare hand. The fact Tennant wore a different outfit helped add fuel to the fire.

** The Master, having impersonated Grigori Rasputin, starts dancing to Music/BoneyM's "Rasputin" while the Doctor, the Daleks, and the Cybermen look on in confusion, funny for just how ''bizarre'' it is. Also, one Cyberman and one Dalek look at one another, and even though they don't have expressible faces anymore, you can just imagine what faces they would be making if they could.

* UnexpectedCharacter: When the first trailer dropped, Ace and Tegan were very unexpected characters (as they note in the episode proper, it's been 30 and 40 years since they last met the Doctor!), but the actual episode has '''a lot''' of Classic-Era characters return, more than any episode in the revived era by quite a wide margin. The First, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Doctors return (all but the first being reprised by their original actors), the Fugitive Doctor comes back via hologram, while Jo Grant (last seen in 2011), Mel Bush (last seen in 1987), and Ian Chesterton (last seen in '''1965''') reappear in the Companions meeting at the end.

The most notable companion from the classic-era that's missing here is Sarah Jane Smith; Elizabeth Sladen sadly passed away in 2011, and confirmation of her death would break from already-established continuity (and casting TheOtherDarrin seems to be off the cards too).

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: The introduction of the "Edge of Existence", aka the Doctor's mindscape where she interacts with echoes of her past incarnations, seems to set up a FightingFromTheInside scenario in order for her to retake her body from the Master, kinda how she did in "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS38E10TheTimelessChildren The Timeless Children]]" to escape the Matrix. Instead, the crisis is solved autonomously by the Doctor AI and the companions, with zero participation from the Doctor herself except for the previous creation of the AI, and the Edge of Existence ultimately remains as pure [[{{Fanservice}} Fanservicey]] ContemplateOurNavels.

** The Doctor's look of horror during the "Ra Ra Rasputin" scene. Horror at the prospect of forced regeneration (especially since she can probably deduce what the Master's plan is), horror at the Master's terrible dance moves, or a bit of both?

Misuse. This trope is not "it would have been cool if this character would have shown up." it's for interesting characters who do not get enough attention or screentime.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: While it's great to see so many former companions, it would've been lovely to see Martha, Mickey, Bill, and Brian Pond as well, not to mention Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi in the Doctor's mindscape. Of course, it's possible that some or all of those actors were unavailable, as Tom Baker and Anneke Wills were.
