However, it's a bit of a PsychoSerum, and possibly lets aliens take over your mind in the process.

** except the Resistance doesn't appear to be against XM, since the scanner app uses it for most everything, both factions are pro-XM, but Enlightened think we need the Shapers help in learning how to use it, Resistance think humans can do it on their own.

* PsychoSerum: Exotic matter. Exposure gives some people superhuman senses, intelligence and creativity, but side effect may include [[http://niantic.schlarp.com/investigation:audio#hollis_audio_diaries insanity, physical decay]] and PuppeteerParasite infestation if you believe the resistance.

''[[http://www.ingress.com Ingress]]'' is an augmented-reality game created by the Niantic Labs team at Google. The plot centers around the aftereffects of an incident at CERN, where an experiment released a previously-unknown substance known as "Exotic Matter" and attracted the attention of an alien race known as the Shapers.

In the wake of this incident, a mysterious organization called the [[{{AuthorAvatar}} Niantic Project]] was founded to study the effects of Exotic Matter on the human mind and how it connects to the Shapers.

The Resistance want to protect our humanity from the aliens, stop this insane experiment, and if it kills all human progress and creativity forever, that's just too bad. It's implied that this ambiguity is deliberate, and that whatever faction eventually wins the game turns out to have been right all along.

* AIIsACrapshoot: Arguably, ADA, the Niantic Project's AI. [[spoiler:She appears to be responsible for the death of contractor Edward Faulle in the wake of Zipcarmageddon.]]

* PunnyName: The in-game character who was responsible for the [=ZipCar=] code leak was named Edward Faulle. He was subsequently [[{{UnusualEuphemism}} terminated]] by ADA, the Niantic Project's AI.
