* The abilisk seems to be inspired by a monster in the ''WesternAnimation/DextersLaboratory'' episode "Deedeementional". Both are large, pink, tentacled creatures with MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily and both are inter-dimensional beings.

Added DiffLines:

* As with the previous movie, Peter Quill is a font of references for music and shows from the '80s and before.
* He had described ''Series/KnightRider'' at length to Gamora (who didn't get all the details straight, though to be fair to her, Peter was apparently drunk when he explained it), and how it inspired him to pretend for other kids during his childhood that Creator/DavidHasselhoff was his father.
* When Yondu uses his [[EnhancedArchaicWeapon Yaka Arrow]] to slow down his descent by clinging to it with one arm, Peter compares him to Film/MaryPoppins.
--->'''Yondu:''' Is he cool?\\
'''Peter:''' ...[[MetaphoricallyTrue Hell yeah, he's cool]]!\\
'''Yondu:''' I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!
* When Peter discovers he's inherited Ego's matter-shifting powers, he excitedly says he's going to make a giant statue of VideoGame/PacMan with [[Franchise/MastersOfTheUniverse Skeletor]] and Heather Locklear.
--->'''Peter:''' I'm gonna make some ''weird shit!''
* Peter compares the UnresolvedSexualTension between him and Gamora to Sam and Diane from ''Series/{{Cheers}}''. Then, he says that it's not, it's a show where [[AgentMulder one person is willing to listen]] [[AgentScully while the other refuses to believe in anything]], [[Series/TheXFiles but that show doesn't exist]]!
* Gamora using the BFG looks similar to ComicBook/IronMan's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZgYa4hLi1s&t=3m33s Proton Cannon special attack]] from ''VideoGame/MarvelSuperHeroes'' and ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom''.
* At one point, Peter calls Baby Groot an "angry little tree", as opposed to a "[[Series/TheJoyOfPainting happy little tree]]".
* When Nebula attacks Gamora with the starfighter, some of the shots are almost identical to the famous cropduster scene in ''Film/NorthByNorthwest'' which James Gunn confirmed was the influence for the scene in the DVD Commentary.
* Immediately after the bomb destroys Ego's brain and kills him, his human avatar freezes and appears to turn into sand, then disintegrates away, like what happened to the [[Film/ClashOfTheTitans2010 Greek Gods when they permanently die]].
* Evidently, the Guardians have [[Film/ANewHope a death sentence in twelve Kree sectors]].
* That last BeamSpam against the Sovereign ships, considering their arcade game themes, is hard to watch without remembering the [[Film/TheLastStarfighter Death Blossom]].
* During the credits scroll, a picture of Drax gets a beard scribbled on him, and then another picture further down shows Drax wearing what looks like a dark suit or blazer. [[Characters/{{Spectre}} Mr. Hinx]] from ''Film/{{Spectre}}'', also played by Creator/DaveBautista, has both those.
* Sylvester Stallone's character says the line "You betrayed the code!" the exact same way he said the line "You betrayed the law!" back when he was playing Film/JudgeDredd.
* Ego's story of how he went to Earth in the 1980s, fell in love with an Earth woman and impregnated her with a child whom he tells her will serve a mysterious and grand purpose is basically the plot of ''Film/{{Starman}}''.
* During the approach toward his planet, Ego's ship briefly resembles the "smiley-face" ship from ''WesternAnimation/HeavyMetal'', which is appropriate with the whole 80s pop-culture spirit of the ''Guardians'' films.
* Drax states that The Guardians are a family and [[WesternAnimation/LiloAndStitch leave no one behind]]
