The year has been reset, and Usagi Tsukino is still arriving late to school and failing. Then a mysterious new entity called the Makai Tree comes to Tokyo, with two aliens named Ali (sometimes referred to as Ail) and An gathering energy for it. (The [=DiC=] dub called it the Doom tree.) Against her wishes, Luna has to revive Usagi's memories as a Sailor Senshi, and soon get the other girls.

* LaserGuidedAmnesia: The Guardians and Mamoru start the season off with no memories of their powers or the fight against the Dark Kingdom. Luna restores Usagi's in the first episode, then the rest of the Guardians in the second episode, but Mamoru spends the entire arc not knowing he was Tuxedo Mask or Prince Endymion. [[spoiler:It's because the Moonlight Knight was the personification of Mamoru's memories separated from his mind. He remembers when the two merge at the end.]]

* DebateAndSwitch: Ali and En are actually very uncomfortable with stealing energy from people. They say that if they don't save the Makai tree, they will die, so it's self-preservation and NothingPersonal. The more they befriend the Senshi in civilian guise and partake in human activities, the more guilty they feel. At one point An even cries about it after Ali ruins the Snow White play by sending a Cardian out of jealousy and telling her she forgot their purpose, saying she feels like they're TrappedInVillainy. The Senshi themselves are sympathetic when they hear the full circumstances in the season finale. Then Usagi uses her powers to help the Doom Tree talk, and it reveals the human energy was poisoning it. It needed love, rather than stolen life-force. Ali goes MyGodWhatHaveIDone when he hears this, holding a prone En. Usagi heals the tree with her love, saving the duo and giving them a second chance.
* EverybodyLives: This is the first arc where the main villains aren't killed, and none of the Senshi die, even temporarily.

* KnightOfCerebus: Cardian Reci proves to be the most dangerous out of all the Cardians when it not only manages to trap the Inner Senshi, it ''destroys'' Usagi's brooch and undoes her transformation. While Usagi later gains a new brooch and the Cutie Moon Rod in order to destroy Reci, the monster was still the first one to ever beat Usagi that badly.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: The Senshi and Mamoru start the season off with no memories of their powers or the fight against the Dark Kingdom. * OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: Somehow, Artemis managed to keep fighting Reci on his own even after she took out the rest of the Senshi and Luna. Even if he was on his last legs by the time Usagi returned, Artemis refused to give up.
* PaperThinDisguise: Averted; unlike with the Shittenou, plausibly Ail and An have glamours that are vastly different from their true forms. Thus, the Senshi have no reason to suspect them.

* CheatersNeverProsper: An cheats to get the lead of Snow White in an upcoming play at a game of straws. Usagi, who gets cast as the witch, is very annoyed about this. Then Ail in a fit of jealousy sends a Cardian at the play, which knocks out An and Mamoru right when the curtain rises.

* TheCorrupter: The [=DiC=] dub has the Makai Tree explain that "dark forces" (i.e. the Negaverse) were responsible for her children turning against each other; they also led Ail and An astray before the duo arrived on Earth.
